The health of the general population is one of the various factors at stake in the 2020′s generation: food security, safety, nutrition, and responsible, sustainable production and consumption are also part of the priorities of governments and enterprises. Under that prism, the new EU legislation (Green Deal – Farm to Fork) building on the top of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals groundwork has brought about a revamped focus on sustainability in the food industry, emphasising reducing food production's environmental impact and promoting sustainable food systems. Here, an integrative approach between scientific and technological advancement, policymakers, consumers, and society, to design sustainable, functional foods is presented, focusing on food innovation for developing bioactive-rich ingredients and tackling non-communicable diseases (NCD). We also critically analyse how these findings fit within the new policy frameworks of the EU and the UN under the common goal of achieving global food security and sustainable growth.

Routine, remote, and process analysis for foodstuffs is gaining attention and can provide more confidence for the food supply chain. A new generation of rapid methods is emerging both in the literature and in industry based on spectroscopy coupled with AI-driven modelling methods. Current published studies using these advanced methods are plagued by weaknesses, including sample size, abuse of advanced modelling techniques, and the process of validation for both the acquisition method and modelling. This paper aims to give a comprehensive overview of the analytical challenges faced in research and industrial settings where screening analysis is performed while providing practical solutions in the form of guidelines for a range of scenarios. After extended literature analysis, we conclude that there is no easy way to enhance the accuracy of the methods by using state-of-the-art modelling methods and the key remains that capturing good quality raw data from authentic samples in sufficient volume is very important along with robust validation. A comprehensive methodology involving suitable analytical techniques and interpretive modelling methods needs to be considered under a tailored experimental design whenever conducting rapid food analysis.

Meat products are particularly plagued by safety problems because of their complicated structure, various production processes and complex supply chains. Rapid and non-invasive analytical methods to evaluate meat quality have become a priority for the industry over the conventional chemical methods. To achieve rapid analysis of safety and quality parameters of meat products, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is now widely applied in research studies for detecting the various components of different meat products, but its application in meat production and supply chain integrity as a quality control (QC) solution is still ambiguous. This review presents the fresh look at the current states of HSI research as both the scope and the applicability of the HSI in the meat quality evaluation expanded. The future application scenarios of HSI in the supply chain and the future development of HSI hardware and software are also discussed, by which HSI technology has the potential to enable large scale meat product testing. With a fully adapted for factory setting HSI, the inspection coverage can reliably identify the chemical properties of meat products. With the introduction of Food Industry 4.0, HSI advances can change the meat industry to become from reactive to predictive when facing meat safety issues.

Abstract Background The presence of condensed tannins (CT) in tree fodders entails a series of productive, health and ecological benefits for ruminant nutrition. Current wet analytical methods employed for full CT characterisation are time and resource-consuming, thus limiting its applicability for silvopastoral systems. The development of quick, safe and robust analytical techniques to monitor CT’s full profile is crucial to suitably understand CT variability and biological activity, which would help to develop efficient evidence-based decision-making to maximise CT-derived benefits. The present study investigates the suitability of Fourier-transformed mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR: 4000–550 cm−1) combined with multivariate analysis to determine CT concentration and structure (mean degree of polymerization—mDP, procyanidins:prodelphidins ratio—PC:PD and cis:trans ratio) in oak, field maple and goat willow foliage, using HCl:Butanol:Acetone:Iron (HBAI) and thiolysis-HPLC as reference methods. Results The MIR spectra obtained were explored firstly using Principal Component Analysis, whereas multivariate calibration models were developed based on partial least-squares regression. MIR showed an excellent prediction capacity for the determination of PC:PD [coefficient of determination for prediction (R2P) = 0.96; ratio of prediction to deviation (RPD) = 5.26, range error ratio (RER) = 14.1] and cis:trans ratio (R2P = 0.95; RPD = 4.24; RER = 13.3); modest for CT quantification (HBAI: R2P = 0.92; RPD = 3.71; RER = 13.1; Thiolysis: R2P = 0.88; RPD = 2.80; RER = 11.5); and weak for mDP (R2P = 0.66; RPD = 1.86; RER = 7.16). Conclusions MIR combined with chemometrics allowed to characterize the full CT profile of tree foliage rapidly, which would help to assess better plant ecology variability and to improve the nutritional management of ruminant livestock.

The authenticity of tea has become more important to the industry while the supply chains become complex. The quality and price of tea produced in different regions varies greatly. Currently, a rapid analytical method for testing the geographical origin of tea is missing. XRF is emerging as a screening technique for mineral and elemental analysis with applications in the traceability of foodstuffs, including tea. This study aims to develop a reliable multivariate classification model using XRF spectroscopy to obtain the mineral content. A total of 75 tea samples from tea producing countries throughout the world were analysed. After variable shortlisting, 18 elements were used to construct the multivariate models. Tea origin was determined by classifying the tea into 5 major geographical regions producing most of the global tea. PCA showed initial clustering in some regions, although the types of teas included in the study (black, green, white, herbal) showed no discrete cluster membership. The prediction power of each classification model developed was determined by using two multivariate classifiers, SIMCA and PLS-DA, against an independent validation set. The average overall correct classification rates of PLS-DA models were between 54-85% while the results of SIMCA models were between 70-84% resolving the poor clustering initially shown by PCA. This study demonstrated the potential of geographical origin of tea prediction using elemental contents of tea. Naturally, the classification can be linked not only to origin but to the type of tea as well. Practical application: Wholesalers and retailers need a rapid and robust screening tool to confirm the origin and type of tea they sell to consumers. X-Ray fluorescence spectroscopy proved a good technique for achieving this in commercial teas sourced worldwide. Building on multivariate models, broad classification was accomplished both in terms of origin (Asian vs non-Asian) and in tea type with zero sample preparation and low cost of analysis.

In this study, a Bayesian-based decision fusion technique was developed for the first time to quickly and non-destructively identify codfish using near infrared (NIRS) and Raman spectroscopy (RS). NIRS and RS spectra from 320 codfish samples were collected, and separate partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models were developed to establish the relationship between the raw data and cod identity for each spectral technique. Three decision fusion methods: decision fusion, data layer or feature layer, were tested and compared. The decision fusion model based on the Bayesian algorithm (NIRS-RS-B) was developed on the optimal discrimination features of NIRS and RS data (NIRS-RS) extracted by the PLS-DA method whereas the other fusion models followed conventional, non-Bayesian approaches. The Bayesian model showed enhanced classification metrics (92% sensitivity, 98% specificity, 98% accuracy) that were significantly superior to those demonstrated by any of other two spectroscopic methods (NIRS, RS) and the two data fusion methods (data layer fused, NIRS-RS-D, or feature layer fused, NIRS-RS-F). This novel proposed approach can provide an alternative classification for codfish and potentially other food speciation cases.

Olive oil is considered to be a food of utmost importance, especially in the Mediterranean countries. The quality of olive oil must remain stable regarding authenticity and storage. This review paper emphasizes the detection of olive oil oxidation status or rancidity, the analytical techniques that are usually used, as well as the application and significance of chemometrics in the research of olive oil. The first part presents the effect of the oxidation of olive oil during storage. Then, lipid stability measurements are described in parallel with instrumentation and different analytical techniques that are used for this particular purpose. The next part presents some research publications that combine chemometrics and the study of lipid changes due to storage published in 2005–2021. Parameters such as exposure to light, air and various temperatures as well as different packaging materials were investigated to test olive oil stability during storage. The benefits of each chemometric method are provided as well as the overall significance of combining analytical techniques and chemometrics. Furthermore, the last part reflects on fraud in olive oil, and the most popular analytical techniques in the authenticity field are stated to highlight the importance of the authenticity of olive oil.

Sulfonylureas, a family of anti-diabetic drugs widely used in the clinical treatment of type 2 diabetes, have recently emerged as an illegal adulterant in functional foods, to enhance the claimed anti-diabetic activity. To establish a screening assay method against their adulteration, with the aid of molecular simulation of hapten, two antibodies were raised and complementarily used to enhance the broad-specificity of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which demonstrated simultaneous detection capability to 6 sulfonylureas; the detection limits ranged from 0.02 to 1.0 ng/mL, and recoveries were between 78.3% to 104.5%. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) confirmed the reliability of the proposed ELISA, based on real samples. These results suggest that the proposed ELISA could be an ideal method for screening to monitor for illicit adulteration of sulfonylureas in functional pill products.

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to investigate how different aging protocols can affect the flexural strength and phase transformations of yttrium-stabilized zirconia ceramics (Y-TZP) for monolithic restorations. Materials and methods: Bar-shaped specimens from two zirconia ceramics bars were divided into three groups: a. no treatment (c), b. aging in an autoclave (a), and c. thermal cycling (t). The flexural strength was determined by the 3-point bending test and statistical analysis was performed to determine significant differences ( p < 0.05). Weibull statistics was used to analyze the dispersion of strength values while surface microstructural analysis was performed through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: Aging did not significantly affect the flexural strength but differences were recorded between the two groups, with group A presenting higher strength values and m-phase percentages. Conclusions: The observed differences between the two ceramics could be attributed to variations in composition and processing.

Background: Durable bonding between resin composite luting agents (CLA) and zirconia is still a matter of controversy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of water storage on hardness and interfacial strength of three CLA, a non-adhesive (Multilink Automix/ML), an adhesive (Panavia F 2.0/PF) and a self-adhesive (PermaCem 2.0/PC), bonded to polished (CL) and grit-blasted (AL: 50 μm alumina, SJ: Sil-Jet + Monobond Plus silane) monolithic zirconia surfaces. Methods: CLA specimens (n = 5/cement, condition) were prepared, stored under dry conditions or immersed in water, and Vickers hardness (VH) measurements were obtained at 1 h, 24 h, 1 week and 3 weeks intervals. Optical profilometry was used to determine the roughness parameters (Sa, Sz, Sdr, Sci) of zirconia surfaces (n = 5/treatment). A shear strength test (SBS, n = 10 × 2/cement) was performed to assess the strength and fractography of the cements bonded to zirconia after isothermal water storage and thermal-cycling (TC). Results: PF demonstrated significantly lower VHN after water storage at all time intervals, PC at 1 w, 3 w and ML at 3 w. SJ and AL showed significantly higher values from CL in all roughness parameters. Weibull analysis revealed the following significance in σο ranking within the same material: AL, SJ, ALTC > SJTC, CL > CLTC (PF); SJ, SJTC, AL, ALTC > CL, CLTC (PC) and SJ, SJTC > AL > ALTC > CL, CLTC (ML). Within the same surface treatment subgroups, the significance in σo ranking was PC, ML > PF (before/after TC) for SJ; PC > PF > ML (before TC), PC, PF > ML (after TC) for AL, and PC > PF > ML (before/after TC) for CL. For the m ranking, the only significant difference within each material group was found in PC (AL > ALTC) and for the same surface treatment in AL (PC > ML). Conclusion: There are significant differences in the water plasticization susceptibility of the CLA tested; the materials with adhesive monomers were the most affected. Tribo-chemical silica coating combined with a silane coupling agent was the most efficient bonding treatment for the non-adhesive and the self-adhesive materials. The adhesive CLA performed better on alumina-blasted than on tribo-chemically coated surfaces.

Abstract Background Development of clinical-grade cell preparations is central to meeting the regulatory requirements for cellular therapies under good manufacturing practice-compliant (cGMP) conditions. Since addition of animal serum in culture media may compromise safe and efficient expansion of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for clinical use, this study aimed to investigate the potential of two serum/xeno-free, cGMP culture systems to maintain long-term “stemness” of oral MSCs (dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and alveolar bone marrow MSCs (aBMMSCs)), compared to conventional serum-based expansion. Methods DPSC and aBMMSC cultures (n = 6/cell type) were established from pulp and alveolar osseous biopsies respectively. Three culture systems were used: StemPro_MSC/SFM_XenoFree (Life Technologies); StemMacs_MSC/XF (Miltenyi Biotek); and α-MEM (Life Technologies) with 15% fetal bovine serum. Growth (population doublings (PDs)), immunophenotypic (flow cytometric analysis of MSC markers) and senescence (β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) activity; telomere length) characteristics were determined during prolonged expansion. Gene expression patterns of osteogenic (ALP, BMP-2), adipogenic (LPL, PPAR-γ) and chondrogenic (ACAN, SOX-9) markers and maintenance of multilineage differentiation potential were determined by real-time PCR. Results Similar isolation efficiency and stable growth dynamics up to passage 10 were observed for DPSCs under all expansion conditions. aBMMSCs showed lower cumulative PDs compared to DPSCs, and when StemMacs was used substantial delays in cell proliferation were noted after passages 6–7. Serum/xeno-free expansion produced cultures with homogeneous spindle-shaped phenotypes, while serum-based expansion preserved differential heterogeneous characteristics of each MSC population. Prolonged expansion of both MSC types but in particular the serum/xeno-free-expanded aBMMSCs was associated with downregulation of CD146, CD105, Stro-1, SSEA-1 and SSEA-4, but not CD90, CD73 and CD49f, in parallel with an increase of SA-gal-positive cells, cell size and granularity and a decrease in telomere length. Expansion under both serum-free systems resulted in “osteogenic pre-disposition”, evidenced by upregulation of osteogenic markers and elimination of chondrogenic and adipogenic markers, while serum-based expansion produced only minor changes. DPSCs retained a diminishing (CCM, StemPro) or increasing (StemMacs) mineralization potential with passaging, while aBMMSCs lost this potential after passages 6–7 under all expansion conditions. Conclusions These findings indicate there is still a vacant role for development of qualified protocols for clinical-grade expansion of oral MSCs; a key milestone achievement for translation of research from the bench to clinics.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the mechanical response of zirconia ceramic during torsional, bending and vibrational loading, before and after aging and surface treatments. Three types of loading where imposed upon zirconia specimens, torsion, bending and vibration. The effects of aging, sandblasting and both on the shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, storage modulus, loss modulus and tanδ were investigated, while surface characterization was performed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD). Sandblasting as well as the aging environment caused a raise of zirconia's shear modulus, young's modulus and storage modulus. The most prominent increase, in these parameters was observed when both treatments where combined. Under the limitations of this in-vitro study it can be concluded that the proposed sandblasting and aging procedures do not impair the mechanical properties of zirconia ceramics, as long as the amount of monoclinic zirconia content is kept under low values, capable to induce the transformation toughening mechanism.

Ensiling could be an effective method to preserve seaweeds for animal feed applications, however, there is limited scientific knowledge in this area. Seaweeds are a promising ruminant feed ingredient, in part due to the content of phenolic compounds, which are receiving considerable interest as alternative antimicrobial agents in feed. The aim of the study was to compare the effect of ensiling on the nutritional composition and fermentation characteristics of two brown seaweed species, Fucus vesiculosus (FV) and Saccharina latissimi (SL) with or without the use of a Lactobacillus plantarum (LAB) inoculant. The effect of ensiling on the stability of phlorotannin was also investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). After harvesting, the seaweeds were wilted for 24 h and subsequently ensiled in laboratory-scaled silos for 90 days. SL silage showed a stronger fermentation pattern (pH < 4), dominated by lactic acid (50–60 g/kg Dry Matter (DM)), and a slightly higher acetic acid content compared to FV silages (p < 0.05). Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are gaining importance in animal feeding due to their ability to upcycle low-value agroindustry by-products into high-protein biomass. The present study evaluated the nutritional composition of BSFL reared on brewer’s by-product (BBP) and the impact of thermal (90 °C for 10/15 min) and high-pressure processing (HPP; 400/600MPa for 1.5/10 min) treatments on the microbial levels and in vitro digestibility in both ruminant and monogastric models. BBP-reared BSFL contained a high level of protein, amino acids, lauric acid, and calcium, and high counts of total viable counts (TVC; 7.97), Enterobacteriaceae (7.65), lactic acid bacteria (LAB; 6.50), and yeasts and moulds (YM; 5.07). Thermal processing was more effective (p < 0.05) than any of the HPP treatments in reducing TVC. Both temperature of 90 °C and pressure of 600 MPa reduced the levels of Enterobacteriaceae, LAB, and YM below the detection limit. In contrast, the application of the 400 MPa showed a reduced inactivation (p < 0.05) potential. Heat-treated samples did not result in any significant changes (p > 0.05) on any of the in vitro digestibility models, whereas HPP showed increased and decreased ruminal and monogastric digestibility, respectively. HPP did not seem to be a suitable, cost-effective method as an alternative to heat-processing for the large-scale treatment of BSFL.

Tea provides health benefits, while oxidation is part of tea processing. The effect of oxidation on the antithrombotic properties of tea lipid extracts was evaluated for the first time. Total lipids (TL) extracted from fresh tea leaves and commercial tea powder, before and after 30−60 min of oxidation, were further fractionated into neutral lipids (NL) and polar lipids (PL). The antithrombotic bioactivities of tea TL, PL, and NL were assessed in human platelets against the inflammatory mediator platelet-activating factor. PL were further assessed against thrombin, collagen, and adenosine diphosphate, while their fatty acid composition was evaluated by GC-MS. PL exhibited the strongest antithrombotic effects against all platelet agonists and were rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated (ω3 PUFA) and monounsaturated (MUFA) fatty acids. A decline was observed in the antithrombotic activities, against all platelet agonists tested, for PL after 60 min of oxidation, and on their MUFA content, while their overall ω3 PUFA content and ω6/ω3 ratio remained unaffected. A synergistic effect between tea phenolic compounds and PL protects them against oxidation, which seems to be the rational for retaining the antithrombotic biofunctionalities of PL at a considerable favorable cardioprotective level, even after 60 min of tea oxidation. More studies are required to elucidate the mechanisms of the favorable synergism in tea PL extracts.

New emerging approaches in tissue engineering include incorporation of metal ions involved in various metabolic processes, such as Cu, Zn, Si into bioceramic scaffolds for enhanced cell growth and differentiation of specific cell types. The aim of the present work was to investigate the attachment, morphology, growth and mineralized tissue formation potential of Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs) seeded into Mg-based glassceramic scaffolds with incorporated Zn and Cu ions. Bioceramic scaffolds containing Si 60%, Ca 30%, Mg 7.5% and either Zn or Cu 2.5%, sintered at different temperatures were synthesized by the foam replica technique and seeded with DPSCs for up to 21 days. Scanning Electron Microscopy with associated Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was used to evaluate their ability to support the DPSCs’s attachment and proliferation, while the structure of the seeded scaffolds was investigated by X-Ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD). Zn-doped bioceramic scaffolds promoted the attachment and growth of human DPSCs, while identically fabricated scaffolds doped with Cu showed a cytotoxic behaviour, irrespective of the sintering temperature. A mineralized tissue with apatite-like structure was formed on both Cu-doped scaffolds and only on those Zn-doped scaffolds heat-treated at lower temperatures. Sol-gel derived Zn-doped scaffolds sintered at 890oC support DPSC growth and apatite-like tissue formation, which renders them as promising candidates towards dental tissue regeneration.

Screwmentable prostheses were developed to combine the benefits of screw retention and cement retention. However, data are limited on the clinical performance of this type of prosthesis. The purpose of this systematic review was to collect scientific evidence on screwmentable prostheses and evaluate their long-term clinical behavior. An electronic search was conducted by 2 independent reviewers for articles published in scientific dental journals in English from 2004 to April 2020. The search strategy followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Inclusion criteria were scientific studies concerning the screwmentable type of prosthesis. The search provided 494 records. Of these, 24 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The included articles presented significant heterogeneity concerning the manufacturing process and the materials used. One randomized clinical trial, 2 prospective clinical studies, 14 in vitro studies, 3 protocol descriptions, 1 case series, and 3 case reports were included. Based on the systematic search of the literature, it is concluded that the screwmentable prosthesis combines advantages of both cement-retained and screw-retained restorations, including passive fit, retrievability, excess cement control, tissue-friendly emergence profile, and improved esthetics. Nevertheless, data from well-designed clinical trials are limited, and further research is required to provide evidence on their long-term clinical behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the impact of moderate intensity pulsed electric field (MIPEF) treatment parameters on enhancing the lycopene content and lycopene in vitro bioaccessibility was investigated. In the first experiment, tomato fruits were treated at 0.4, 1 and 2 kV/cm using 1 or 10 monopolar pulses of 4 μs at a frequency of 0.1 Hz and analysed 24 h after holding period at 40C while in the second experiment, the influence of treatmentintensity (0, 4, 80 and 320 μs) and holding period (0, 24 and 48 h) on lycopene contents and lycopene in vitro bioaccessibility was evaluated. Fresh sample, without MIPEF treatment, showed the lowest lycopene content (23.27±2.13 μg/g FW) and the lowest lycopene bioaccessibility (8.1±1.70%), while all MIPEF treatments (4 or 40 μs) at different electric field strength (0.4-2.0 kV/cm) enhanced the lycopene content and lycopene bioaccessibility. The results of second experiment revealed that the highest duration treatment (320 μs) showed the maximum lycopene enhancement immediately after the treatment (57.98±4.48μg/g) and decreased thereafter. All the treatments except 320 μs sample enhanced the lycopene invitrobioaccessibility after 24 h after holding period and decreased thereafter. The maximum total lycopene bioaccessibility content (9.6%) of whole tomato was achieved by a 4 μs (at 1 kV/cm) treatment after a 24 h holding period.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from poultry carcasses were added to BHI broth along with Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes in order to determine their antagonistic activity against the pathogens. There was a statistically significant reduction in Salmonella population on the 5th day that varied from 0.41 to 1.12 log CFU/ml. The reduction in L. monocytogenes population was also statistically significant and varied from 0.77 to 1.48 log CFU/ml. The LAB strain with the best inhibitory activity was chosen to examine its action against the same pathogens on the chicken skin and meat. On the chicken skin, the growth reduction on the 6th day caused by L. salivarius was lower and did not exceed the 0.54 log CFU/cm2 for Salmonella spp. and 0.71 log CFU/cm2 for L. monocytogenes. The reduction on the chicken meat was slightly lower for both pathogens. The results of the experiments suggest that L. salivarius (strain LAB 59) has a potential to be used as a protective culture to improve the safety and extend the shelf life of chicken products.

Glass-ceramic scaffolds containing Mg have shown recently the potential to enhance the proliferation, differentiation, and biomineralization of stem cells in vitro, property that makes them promising candidates for dental tissue regeneration. An additional property of a scaffold aimed at dental tissue regeneration is to protect the regeneration process against oral bacteria penetration. In this respect, novel bioactive scaffolds containing Mg2+ and Cu2+ or Zn2+, ions known for their antimicrobial properties, were synthesized by the foam replica technique and tested regarding their bioactive response in SBF, mechanical properties, degradation, and porosity. Finally their ability to support the attachment and long-term proliferation of Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs) was also evaluated. The results showed that conversely to their bioactive response in SBF solution, Zn-doped scaffolds proved to respond adequately regarding their mechanical strength and to be efficient regarding their biological response, in comparison to Cu-doped scaffolds, which makes them promising candidates for targeted dental stem cell odontogenic differentiation and calcified dental tissue engineering.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of laser-liquid-solid interaction method in the bioactivity of dental porcelain modified by bioactive glass. Forty sol-gel derived specimens were immersed in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium, 31 and 9 specimens of which were treated with Er:YAG and Nd:YAG laser respectively. Untreated specimens served as controls. Incubation of specimens followed. Bioactivity was evaluated, using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). FTIR detected peaks associated with hydroxyapatite on 1 Nd:YAG- and 4 Er:YAG-treated specimens. SEM analysis revealed that Er:YAG-treated specimens were covered by granular hydroxyapatite layer, while Nd:YAG treated specimen presented growth of flake-like hydroxyapatite. TEM confirmed the results. The untreated controls presented delayed bioactivity. In conclusion, Nd:YAG and Er:YAG laser treatment of the material, under certain fluencies, accelerates hydroxyapatite formation. Nd:YAG laser treatment of specific parameters causes the precipitation of flake-like hydroxyapatite in nano-scale.

The purpose of this short communication is to report on some micro/nanoscale aspects of the mechanical behavior of dental porcelain. Specimens were characterized by micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Massive nanoindentation experiments on the surface of the specimens were performed, and typical load-displacement or load-depth (P-h) curves were obtained, which in turn were used to determine the Young modulus (E) and nanoindentation hardness (n-H), based on the Oliver-Pharr method [1]. Statistical analyses were carried out to determine the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (Spearman’s ρ), along with non-parametric linear regression analysis by employing Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Two-Step Cluster tests. Densification due to grain boundary diffusion and open-pore elimination was revealed by SEM. EDS analysis indicated a leucite-dispersed silicate glass matrix, as well as its contamination by traces of other minerals. Raman spectroscopy supported the EDS assignments. The P-h curves suggested that inelastic deformation and material flow increases at larger depths. Spearman’s ρ value showed strong dependence of E and n-H on h, indicating the occurrence of a size effect. The logarithmic data of E and n-H as functions of h were fitted by using linear regression analysis. The data did not obey a normal distribution (as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed) due to the chemical heterogeneity involved. The Two-Step Cluster analysis indicated clustering in four groups associated with the chemical heterogeneity of the surface. Similar works using nanoindentation to determine the mechanical properties of dental materials can be found, for example, in [2, 3]. Corresponding methods for extracting the values of E and n-H from P-h experimental curves can be found, for example, in [4–6].

Purpose: The investigation of zirconia core surface pretreatments on the flexural strength of bilayered zirconia ceramics before and after artificial accelerating aging. Methods: Ninety bar-shaped specimens were manufactured from Yttria Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal (Y-TZP) and divided in three groups depending on zirconia surface pretreatment before veneering: layering with liner, pretreatment with silane-containing gas flame (SGF) with the Silano-Pen device and alumina air-abrasion. Half of the veneered specimens in each group (n=15) underwent artificial accelerating aging. A 4-point bending test was performed to determine flexural strength. Three specimens from each group were further analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) before veneering and after fracture (aged and non-aged subgroups). Results: Alumina air-abrasion was correlated to increased phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic zirconia phase. Qualitative analysis revealed that with the majority of the specimens pretreated with the silane-containing gas flame, areas of the veneering material remained firmly attached to the zirconia core after flexural strength testing. There was no statistically significant difference on the flexural strength among the groups before or after aging. Artificial accelerating aging resulted in statistically significant higher flexural strength of the specimens after aging. Conclusion: SGF pretreatment can be an acceptable and feasible alternative method before the veneering of Y-TZP zirconia as it presented slightly higher bond strength compared with alumina air-abrasion which was associated with higher tetragonal to monoclinic (t→m) phase transformation.
