As long noted, in the first novel written after Percy Shelley’s death, The Last Man, Mary Shelley created the figure of Adrian to begin the process of idealizing her husband that she would continue in the notes to his Poems. In this essay, I look closely at her use of literary models to understand her husband’s life and death, and, especially, to construct an image of her husband that allows her to believe in the couple’s continuing union after death. I suggest that she not only reshapes her husband in her own image, but, in the title figure of “the last man,” creates a corporate figure who symbolizes the couple’s complete intimacy by ultimately combining qualities of both Shelleys.
