In 2013-2016 the possibility of combined application of herbicides with retardants in winter wheat was investigated in Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Wrocław. Two retardants (1. chloromequate chloride, 2. trinexapac-ethyl) were used in tank mixture with fluroxypyr and florasulam + aminopyralide. The mixtures were applied on two dates: 1. at the end of tillering, 2. at the stage of 1-2 nodes (florasulam + aminopyralide) or at the stage of flag leaf (fluroxypyr). Efficacy of weed control was affected only by date of treatment. Irrespective of which herbicide-retardant combination was used, the weed suppression was the lowest on plots treated with the mixtures at a later growth stage. It was reflected in the size of grain yield received from these plots, that was comparable to untreated control. Application of the mixture of fluroxypyr with trinexapac-ethyl in winter wheat tillering and flag leaf growth stages contributed to seed uniformity decrease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the effects of climate/soil conditions and crop competition on selected morphological traits, biomass productivity and some other biological aspects of the weedy species Avena fatua L. and Solanum nigrum L. The species examined came from arable fields differing with respect to soil type and crop species according to the following pattern: A. fatua (in maize - brown soil, in spring wheat - podsolic soil), S. nigrum (in maize - brown soil, in potatoes - podsolic soil). The investigations included measurements in their original habitats and in a controlled environment. Plants grown on fields with brown soil reached higher values of the evaluated traits as compared to those recorded for plants grown on a podsolic soil. The height of A. fatua was similar in both habitats because competitive ability of the crop balanced the soil effect. There were no differences in plant morphology and biomass productivity within the two species when plants were grown in the same soil/climate conditions but on different soils S. nigrum exhibited variation in plant height and biomass productivity. Both species similarly responded to reduced light that revealed differences between them in chlorophyll content. Seeds of A. fatua and S. nigrum, regardless of their origin, germinated better in darkness than in the light and seeds of both species were more able to germinate when they were collected from plants grown in the light conditions from above the crop canopy. Experiments to evaluate 40% and 80% methanol extracts prepared from the aboveground parts of two Solanum nigrum biotypes and from the roots of two Avena sativa biotypes were used to test the growth and development of some weed species and agropathogens. The species collected from different crop fields were Viola arvensis, Chenopodium album, Stellaria media, Papaver rhoeas, and Thlaspi arvense together with the pathogenic fungi Fusarium avenaceum, F. culmorum, and F. oxysporum. Plant morphological changes and significant fresh weight reduction of Viola arvensis were observed when treated with both 40% and 80% extracts. A similar response was found in C. album, but only when plants were treated with an 80% extract obtained from plants of S. nigrum collected from a maize field. The most susceptible to both extracts from A. fatua roots growing in a spring wheat field were C. album and S. media, whereas V. arvensis was only susceptible to the 80% extract. The addition of the extracts obtained from A. fatua to PDA medium at concentrations of 0.1% and 1% contributed to significant reductions in the mycelium growth of all three Fusarium species. The extract obtained from S. nigrum added to PDA medium at 1% concentration slightly stimulated mycelium growth of F. oxysporum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Weeds are a primary factor limiting maize yield. Their occurrence and abundance are affected considerably by environmental factors and farming practices. The variability of weed number in maize depending on the soil type and farm size was investigated. Farms of different sizes vary in farming practices, which affects weediness. Based on this assumption, farm size was considered as indirect factor affecting weed abundance. An investigation of 45 farms that differed in size (5-15 ha, 15-50 ha, >50 ha) and soil type (chernozem, distric cambisol, haplic luvisol) was conducted. Thirteen dominant weed species persistently occurring in maize fields in south-western Poland were examined. Regardless of the soil type and farm size, the most abundant weed species were Echinochloa crus-galli and Chenopodium album. In addition to these species, the most numerous weeds on chernozems were Setaria viridis and Solanum nigrum, while on haplic luvisols and distric cambisols, the most numerous were Viola arvensis and Elymus repens. Additionally, on haplic luvisols, Anthemis arvensis was abundant. Small farms were stronger infested by weeds than large farms due to the implementation of extensive weed-supressing practices, especially low herbicide use. The reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) features high content of bioactive compounds from the group of alkaloids with allelopathic activity. Habitat factors and the harvest time determine the synthesis of chemical compounds required for plant survival in adverse conditions. The aim of the research was to reveal the inhibitory effect of extracts from the reed canary grass on some weed species. The biotypes of the reed canary grass originated from two floristically different habitats. The material was collected in two periods: in spring and in late autumn before the winter dormancy. In each period, aboveground parts and runners of each biotype were collected as raw material for preparation of the extracts. Several series of the tests showed strong inhibitory activity towards Amaranthus retroflexus L., Papaver rhoeas L.,and Stellaria media (L.) Vill of the extract prepared from the runners collected on the bank of a midfield watercourse in Pisarzowice. The strongest inhibitory effect was exhibited by the extracts from runners collected before the winter dormancy period. Extracts derived from both aboveground parts and runners collected from the habitat in Jarnołtów had a considerably weaker phytotoxic and inhibitory effect regardless of the harvest date. Small-plot experiments for two levels of infestation (20 and 40 plants per m2 ) with Chenopodium album L. and Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beav were conducted in the 2009–2011 seasons. In the first variant, the effect of time of weed removal on maize was investigated. Weeds were removed in the following growth stages of maize: one, three, five, and seven leaves, the beginning of stem elongation, and the stage from the fourth to sixth node. The second variant concerned the effect of time of weed emergence on maize and included the same maize growth stages as mentioned above. In both treatments, weed competition was compared to the control – the plot completely free from weeds, as well as to the plot fully covered with weeds. Echinochloa crusgalli in the amount of 20 plants per m2 , which were not removed until the five-leaf stage or which emerged immediately after the seven-leaf stage of maize, did not show any competitive effect on the growth and development of maize. Chenopodium album was characterized by a similar effect at the same level of weed infestation severity and when not removed until the five-leaf stage as well as in the case of plants that emerged after the seven-leaf stage of maize. The aim of the study was to examine the morphology, and selected aspects of biology (seed germination capacity, biomass productivity) of reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) growing in two locations with different soil conditions near Wrocław. Habitat 1 was characterized by low to moderate contents of nutrients, slightly acidic pH, and low organic matter content in the soil, whereas habitat 2 had soil richer in nutrients, a neutral pH, and higher organic matter content. During the growing period, phytosociological relevés were taken and biometric measurements were performed. In controlled conditions, the germination rate and biomass productivity were estimated in the initial growth stage. The soil conditions that were more favorable for P. arundinacea growth (neutral pH, higher content of organic matter and nutrients) promoted its dominance, and substantially limited the occurrence of other taxa. The floristic composition in the less fertile habitat was considerably richer and the abundance of P. arundinacea was much lower in it, compared with the other location. Phalaris arundinacea plants growing on the nutrient-richer soil were higher and had longer leaf blades and panicles with a greater number of spikelets per panicle than specimens growing on the poorer soil. Seeds collected from plants growing on the more fertile soil exhibited greater germination capacity than seeds from plants originating from the poorer habitat. Knowledge about yield variability of crop cultivar is very useful regarding its selection and for cultivation in a target region, as well as under specific cultivation regime. In this study, the yield variability of spring barley cultivars grown on different soils in South-West Poland with respect to herbicides was investigated. Field studies were conducted in over a three-year period (2010-2012). They included four spring barley cultivars (Westminster, Antek, Eunova, Conchita) and three weeding treatment: (i) the mixture of 2.4-D with fluroxypyr (450 g ha-1 + 112.5 g ha-1), (ii) the mixture of aminopyralid with florasulam (9.99 g ha-1 + 4.99 g ha-1), (iii) no herbicide (manually weeded check). Experiment was set up on two different soils - black soil and podsolic soil. Analysis of variance proved greater impact of soil than weather conditions on yield variability of barley cultivars. It also showed the significant genotypic-environmental interaction of the examined cultivars under diversified weeding treatments. On black soil, the highest yield was recorded for Eunova cultivar whereas on podsolic soil it was noted for Conchita cultivar, irrespective of weeding. Eunova cultivar showed significant yield variability for the mixture aminopyralid + florasulam usage and, therefore, this herbicide is not recommended for this cultivar. Among the examined cultivars, Westminster featured distinct reaction to diversified environmental conditions and proved considerable yield variability across years and places, irrespective of weed control. Biomass reduction and amino acid content in plants of Papaver rhoeas L. and Stellaria media L. were investigated to evaluate response of these species to herbicide stress under various temperature (25/16 and 8/2 °C) and relative humidity (50 and 75%) regimes. Weeds were treated with tribenuron methyl (15 g x ha-1), a mixture of 2.4-D with florasulam (180 + 3.75 g x ha-1), and a mixture of 2.4-D with dicamba (1252.5 + 97.5 g x ha-1). The fresh weight of weeds and the content of free branched-chain amino acids (valine, leucine and isoleucine) in plant tissue were recorded. Tribenuron methyl was the herbicide that most limited biomass productivity, regardless of weed species and climate conditions. S. media was more sensitive to herbicides than P. rhoeas. Weed response to herbicides was dependent on temperature, but not on relative humidity. Tribenuron methyl applied to both weed species under various temperature regimes caused significant amino acid deficiency. The reduction in amino acid content in plants of P. rhoeas was greater at warm temperature compared to the cold regime due to stronger reaction to tribenuron methyl applied under these conditions.
