Field education is a critical and enriching component of the undergraduate geoscience curriculum and is enhanced when combined with a study abroad program. The affective domain -- defined in geoscience as emotion, motivation, and connection to Earth -- is an integral part of the field experience. Using questionnaire data collected at the start of two geoscience field trips, this study compares motivation and connection to Earth of study abroad students from the United States with local New Zealand students. Results show that study abroad students are more intrinsically motivated for learning, place higher value on the field trip tasks, are more pro-environmental, and are more attached to and see more positive and diverse meanings in the field area. To leverage this and improve student outcomes, we recommend that this study abroad module be adapted to be more applied, environmentally focused, and place-based. Findings highlight the importance of teaching and learning to specific study abroad students, as compared to applying unchanged curricula from local institutions.

Dating young lava flows is essential for understanding volcano's eruption frequency, yet challenging due to methodological limitations of commonly used dating techniques. Ruapehu (Aotearoa New Zealand) produced many lava flows during the Holocene, but constraints on the timing of these eruptions are scarce. Here, we use paleomagnetic dating to deliver new eruption ages of 18 lava flows with uncertainties ranging between 500 and 2,700 years (at the 95% confidence level). Comparison between lava flows' paleomagnetic directions and a local paleosecular variation record indicates that the large lava flow field located on the Whakapapa area was emplaced during at least three distinct eruptive episodes between 10600 and 7400 BP. Two of these episodes closely followed a large collapse event that affected Ruapehu's northern area and generated large volumes of lava between 10600 and 8800 BP, with the third episode producing less voluminous lava flows between 8100 and 7400 BP. Following a smaller collapse of the southeastern sector of the edifice at ca. 5300 BP, several low‐volume lava flows were emplaced during at least two distinct eruptive episodes prior to ca. 1000 BP, which supplied the Whangaehu valley with lava. The youngest age inferred from our data represents the youngest eruption age provided for a lava flow outside Ruapehu's summit region. This research provides greater detail to the Holocene effusive chronology at Ruapehu, shedding light on partial cone reconstructions after edifice collapses during the Holocene, and the time relationships between trends observed in its effusive and explosive activity. Earth's magnetic field is constantly changing in both direction and strength. Magnetic minerals contained in the lava flows record the direction of the field as the lava cools after eruption. Hence, solidified lavas can be dated by matching their magnetization directions to a reference record. In this study, we analyze the magnetization directions recorded in prehistoric lavas at Mt. Ruapehu (Aotearoa New Zealand) and use them to determine when they erupted. We show that a large flow field in the Whakapapa area (northwest Ruapehu) was formed during at least three distinct eruptive episodes between 10,600 and 7,350 years ago, following a catastrophic volcanic landslide at around 10,600 years ago. We also determine that the lavas present in the Whangaehu valley (east Ruapehu) erupted during at least two episodes between 4,600 and 1,000 years ago, the latter representing the youngest lavas known outside the summit area of Ruapehu. This research helps understand how Ruapehu was rebuilt after slope collapses, and the frequency of lava‐forming eruptions. This study compares the field experience and development of sense of place (in this case, human attributed meanings and attachments to the field area) in geoscience students on three separate course sections of a six-day introductory geological mapping field trip. Students stayed in a small farm station within their 4 km[superscript 2] field area, worked in groups of three or four, and produced an individual final assessment. Findings from student interviews and pre-post surveys indicated that there were no significant differences in perceptions of the field trip purpose or sense of place between field trip sections, despite differences in instructor pedagogy and sense of place, as well as varied weather conditions. There were significant increases in student sense of place on all field trips, in contrast with previous work on a "roadside" (regional, multi-site) field trip where no significant change in sense of place occurred. In-field observations and instructor interviews identified key characteristics that supported similar sense of place and experiences on all trips: (1) consistent intended learning outcomes, (2) a carefully selected and immersive field area valued by instructors, and (3) an assessment connected to the landscape/field area with flexibility in its implementation, especially when faced with adverse weather conditions.

Terrestrial volcanic eruptions are the consequence of magmas ascending to the surface of the Earth. This ascent is driven by buoyancy forces, which are enhanced by bubble nucleation and growth (vesiculation) that reduce the density of magma (1). The development of vesicularity also greatly reduces the 'strength' of magma (2), a material parameter controlling fragmentation and thus the explosive potential of the liquid rock (3). The development of vesicularity in magmas has until now been viewed (both thermodynamically and kinetically) in terms of the pressure dependence of the solubility of water in the magma, and its role in driving gas saturation, exsolution and expansion during decompression. In contrast, the possible effects of the well documented negative temperature dependence of solubility of water in magma has largely been ignored. Recently, petrological constraints have demonstrated that considerable heating of magma may indeed be a common result of the latent heat of crystallization (4) as well as viscous (5, 6) and frictional (7) heating in areas of strain localization. Here we present field and experimental observations of magma vesiculation and fragmentation resulting from heating (rather than decompression). Textural analysis of volcanic ash from Santiaguito volcano in Guatemala reveals the presence of chemically heterogeneous filaments hosting micrometre-scale vesicles. The textures mirror those developed by disequilibrium melting induced via rapid heating during fault friction experiments, demonstrating that friction can generate sufficient heat to induce melting and vesiculation of hydrated silicic magma. Consideration of the experimentally determined temperature and pressure dependence of water solubility in magma reveals that, for many ascent paths, exsolution may be more efficiently achieved by heating than by decompression. We conclude that the thermal path experienced by magma during ascent strongly controls degassing, vesiculation, magma strength and the effusive-explosive transition in volcanic eruptions., Volcanic eruptions result from magma buoyancy, largely powered by volatile exsolution. The rising velocity of an air bubble in a non‐Newtonian shear‐thinning fluid at low Reynolds numbers is generally similar to the Newtonian case given by Stokes' law. However, when the shear‐thinning fluid is subject to mechanical oscillations, the rising velocity could significantly increase. Here, we present a series of experiments quantifying the rising velocity of single bubbles during shaking in very high‐viscosity (2,000–30,000 Pa·s) shear‐thinning silicone oils. Air bubbles (18–30 mm diameter) were injected in a tank mounted on a shaking table. The tank was horizontally oscillated, at accelerations between 0.4 and 2 g. We observed a small increase in the rising velocity of the shaking cases at our experimental conditions. The increase was larger when bubbles were large and accelerations were high. Larger accelerations experienced the largest observational errors and we emphasize the exploratory nature of our results. We also measured the change in bubble diameter during the oscillations and computed the shear rate at the bubble surface. Maximum shear rates were in the range of 0.04–0.08 s−1. At these shear rates, our analysis indicates that shear thinning behavior of our analog fluids is expected to be small and compete with elastic behavior. This transitional viscous/elastic regime helps explain the small and variable results of our experiments. Our results are relevant to the study of earthquake‐volcano interactions. Most crystal‐free silicate melts would exhibit a purely viscous, shear‐thinning behavior in a natural scenario. Seismically enhanced bubble rise could offer an explanation for the observed increased degassing and unrest following large earthquakes. Plain Language Summary: The speed at which air bubbles rise in a liquid is generally well‐known. However, in non‐Newtonian fluids (liquids with non‐constant viscosity), previous experiments have shown that this speed could be significantly increased by shaking the fluid container. In this study, we present experiments where we measure the rising speed of an air bubble in a viscous non‐Newtonian fluid while shaking it. We found that bubbles rose slightly faster during shaking, especially for strong shaking and/or large bubbles. However, the shaking of the table reduced the precision of our measurements, and our results need to be further validated. We were also able to measure how quickly the bubbles deformed during shaking. When the bubbles deform quickly, our fluids may behave like solids rather than liquids. This helps explain why our results are less striking than previous experiments. Our results can be applied to the study of volcanoes. Magma inside a volcano contains vapor bubbles. When an earthquake occurs close to a volcano, these bubbles may accelerate toward the surface and lead to more gas coming out of the volcano. Cycles of stress build-up and release are inherent to tectonically active planets. Such stress oscillations impart strain and damage, prompting mechanically loaded rocks and materials to fail. Here, we investigate, under uniaxial conditions, damage accumulation and weakening caused by time-dependent creep (at 60, 65, and 70% of the rocks' expected failure stress) and repeating stress oscillations (of ± 2.5, 5.0 or 7.5% of the creep load), simulating earthquakes at a shaking frequency of ~ 1.3 Hz in volcanic rocks. The results show that stress oscillations impart more damage than constant loads, occasionally prompting sample failure. The magnitudes of the creep stresses and stress oscillations correlate with the mechanical responses of our porphyritic andesites, implicating progressive microcracking as the cause of permanent inelastic strain. Microstructural investigation reveals longer fractures and higher fracture density in the post-experimental rock. We deconvolve the inelastic strain signal caused by creep deformation to quantify the amount of damage imparted by each individual oscillation event, showing that the magnitude of strain is generally largest with the first few oscillations; in instances where pre-existing damage and/or the oscillations' amplitude favour the coalescence of micro-cracks towards system scale failure, the strain signal recorded shows a sharp increase as the number of oscillations increases, regardless of the creep condition. We conclude that repetitive stress oscillations during earthquakes can amplify the amount of damage in otherwise mechanically loaded materials, thus accentuating their weakening, a process that may affect natural or engineered structures. We specifically discuss volcanic scenarios without wholesale failure, where stress oscillations may generate damage, which could, for example, alter pore fluid pathways, modify stress distribution and affect future vulnerability to rupture and associated hazards. Ruapehu (150 km3 cone, 150 km3 ring-plain) and Tongariro (90 km3 cone, 60 km3 ring-plain) are iconic stratovolcanoes, formed since ∼230 and ∼350 ka, respectively, in the southern Taupo Volcanic Zone and Taupo Rift. These volcanoes rest on Mesozoic metasedimentary basement with local intervening Miocene sediments. Both volcanoes have complex growth histories, closely linked to the presence or absence of glacial ice that controlled the distribution and preservation of lavas. Ruapehu cone-building vents are focused into a short NNE-separated pair, whereas Tongariro vents are more widely distributed along that trend, the differences reflecting local rifting rates and faulting intensities. Both volcanoes have erupted basaltic andesite to dacite (53–66 wt.% silica), but mostly plagioclase-two pyroxene andesites from storage zones at 5–10 km depth. Erupted compositions contain evidence for magma mixing and interaction with basement rocks. Each volcano has an independent magmatic system and a growth history related to long-term (>104 years) cycles of mantle-derived magma supply, unrelated to glacial/interglacial cycles. Historic eruptions at both volcanoes are compositionally diverse, reflecting small, dispersed magma sources. Both volcanoes often show signs of volcanic unrest and have erupted with a wide range of styles and associated hazards, most recently in 2007 (Ruapehu) and 2012 (Tongariro). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Volcanoes represent one of the most critical geological settings for hazard modelling due to their propensity to both unpredictably erupt and collapse, even in times of quiescence. Volcanoes are heterogeneous at multiple scales, from porosity, which is variably distributed and frequently anisotropic, to strata, which are laterally discontinuous and commonly pierced by fractures and faults. Due to variable and, at times, intense stress and strain conditions during and following emplacement, volcanic rocks span an exceptionally wide range of physical and mechanical properties. Understanding the constituent materials' attributes is key to improving the interpretation of the hazards posed by the diverse array of volcanic complexes. Here, we examine the spectrum of physical and mechanical properties presented by a single dome-forming eruption at a dacitic volcano, Mount Unzen (Japan), by testing a number of isotropic and anisotropic lavas in tension and compression with acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. The lava dome erupted as a series of 13 lobes between 1991 and 1995, and its ongoing instability means that much of the volcano and its surroundings remain within an exclusion zone today. During a field campaign in 2015, we selected four representative blocks as the focus of this study. The core samples from each block span a range in total porosity from 9.14 % to 42.81 % and a range in permeability from 1.65×10-15 to 1.88×10-9 m2 (from 1065 measurements). For a given porosity, sample permeability varies by >2 orders of magnitude and is typically lower for macroscopically anisotropic samples than for isotropic samples of similar porosity. An additional 379 permeability measurements on planar surfaces of both an isotropic and anisotropic sample block showed consistent minimum, maximum, and average permeabilities, and comparable standard deviations to measurements on core and disc samples; this indicated a negligible impact of sample size on recorded permeability across the range of sample sizes and absolute permeabilities tested. Permeability measured under confined conditions showed that the lowest permeability samples, whose porosity largely comprises microfractures, are most sensitive to effective pressure and that anisotropy of permeability is enhanced by confinement. The permeability measurements highlight the importance of the measurement approach, scale, and confinement conditions in the description of permeability. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) ranges from 13.48 to 47.80 MPa , and tensile strength (UTS) using the Brazilian disc method ranges from 1.30 to 3.70 MPa , with crack-dominated lavas being weaker than vesicle-dominated materials of equivalent porosity. UCS is lower in saturated conditions, whereas the impact of saturation on UTS is variable. UCS is between 6.8 and 17.3 times higher than UTS, with anisotropic samples forming each endmember. The Young's modulus of dry samples ranges from 4.49 to 21.59 GPa and is systematically reduced in water-saturated tests. The interrelation of porosity, UCS, UTS, and Young's modulus was modelled with good replication of the data, and empirical relationships are provided. Acceleration of monitored acoustic emission (AE) rates during deformation was assessed by fitting Poisson point process models in a Bayesian framework. An exponential acceleration model closely replicated the tensile strength tests, whilst compressive tests tended to have relatively high early rates of AEs, suggesting failure forecast may be more accurate in tensile regimes, though with shorter warning times. The Gutenberg–Richter b value has a negative correlation with connected porosity for both UCS and UTS tests which we attribute to different stress intensities caused by differing pore networks. The b value is higher for UTS than UCS, and it typically decreases (positive Δb) during tests, with the exception of cataclastic samples in compression. Δb correlates positively with connected porosity in compression and correlates negatively in tension. Δb using a fixed sampling length may be a more useful metric for monitoring changes in activity at volcanoes than the b value with an arbitrary starting point. Using coda wave interferometry (CWI), we identify velocity reductions during mechanical testing in compression and tension, the magnitude of which is greater in more porous samples in UTS but independent of porosity in UCS and which scales to both b value and Δb. Yet, saturation obscures velocity changes caused by evolving material properties, which could mask damage accrual or source migration in water-rich seismogenic environments such as volcanoes. The results of this study highlight that heterogeneity and anisotropy within a single system not only add variability but also have a defining role in the channelling of fluid flow and localisation of strain that dictate a volcano's hazards and the geophysical indicators we use to interpret them. Field work is an integral component of undergraduate geoscience education. Field areas for these crucial experiences are carefully selected, but how do these places affect our students? This study compares the field experience of students participating in two distinct modules of a study abroad field camp in New Zealand, through sense of place and perceptions of learning. The situated module was geological mapping based in a single site, whereas the roadside module was based on smaller exercises in multiple discrete sites. Survey findings indicate that students became significantly more attached to the situated field area, but had no significant change in their attachment to the roadside field area. Field observations and interview findings suggest that this may be due to student autonomy, the immersive landscape, and strong alignment of student perceptions of learning with instructor intentions on the situated field module. In contrast, the roadside module was more determined by the instructor, and student perceptions of learning did not align well with instructor intent in conveying a sense of the regional geologic history. We assimilate our field observations and student and instructor interview data into a schematic model of the two field trip styles. This model is then used to visualize an improved pedagogy to foster greater engagement with the landscape and geology in the roadside trip. We recommend that roadside field trips have explicit assessments that connect the field sites together. Our interview data suggest that this connection would be further enhanced with greater opportunities for student ownership of in-field decision making through student-centered learning, encouragement of a sense of exploration, and development of a student and instructor field learning community. The Rotokawa geothermal field is in the Taupō Volcanic Zone, New Zealand. It hosts two geothermal power plants, Rotokawa and Ngā Awa Pūrua, which together have a capacity over 170 MWe. The permeability of the rock mass comprising a geothermal field controls the volume of hot fluids that can be extracted for energy production. In this research we produce a stress model to estimate in-situ rock matrix permeability for a unique set of intact rock samples obtained from depths up to 2600 m in the Rotokawa geothermal field. We show that permeability generally decreases with sample depth, both intrinsically and in response to increasing confining pressure. We explore this confining pressure effect on other petrophysical and mechanical measurements, and highlight how rock texture and composition affect how the rocks respond to confining pressure. For example, we compare two altered andesite samples: a breccia with microfractures and infilled pores that tends to experience less compaction and porosity decrease than a lava with rounded, unfilled pores. We suggest that, when developing depth-models, measurements should be conducted at relevant in-situ conditions, if possible. Finally, we explore relationships between different physical parameters and provide estimating functions for those with the clearest correlations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Breccia-filled eruption conduits are dynamic systems where pressures frequently exceed critical thresholds, generating earthquakes and transmitting fluids. To assess the dynamics of breccia-filled conduits, we examine lava, ash tuff, and hydrothermal breccia ballistics with varying alteration, veining, fractures, and brecciation ejected during the 27 April 2016 phreatic eruption of Whakaari/White Island. We measure connected porosity, strength, and permeability with and without tensile fractures at a range of confining pressures. Many samples are progressively altered with anhydrite, alunite, and silica polymorphs. The measurements show a large range of connected porosity, permeability, and strength. In contrast, the cracked samples show a consistently high permeability. The cracked altered samples have a permeability more sensitive to confining pressure than the unaltered samples. The permeability of our altered ballistics is lower than surface rocks of equivalent porosity, illustrating that mineral precipitation locally blocked pores and cracks. We surmise that alteration within the conduit breccia allows cracks to form, open and close, in response to pore pressure and confining pressure, providing a mechanism for frequent and variable fluid advection pulses to the surface. This produces temporally and spatially variable geophysical and geochemical observations and has implications for volcano monitoring for any volcano system with significant hydrothermal activity. It is now established that earthquakes can trigger volcanic eruptions, yet, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we investigate the hypothesis that seismically-triggered eruption deposits exhibit significant textural differences, that can lead to insights into eruption triggering mechanisms. The 1960 eruption of Cordón Caulle, Chile occurred only 38 hours after the M9.5 Great Chile earthquake, indicating a possible seismic trigger. The previous eruption in 1921, was not preceded by any large earthquake. We thus compare the bubble texture of pumice lapilli from the 1921 and 1960 eruptions using both Scanning Electron Microscope and X-ray computed microtomography images. The two eruptions are similar in style, size and composition but the 1960 clasts are consistently denser. We assess whether textural differences result from the earthquake or arise from inherent natural variability. Finally, we perform a similar analysis on the most recent 2011 eruption, which trailed the 2010 M8.8 Maule earthquake by 16 months and consider the possibility that this eruption was seismically triggered too. Silicic caldera volcanoes are often associated with hydrothermal systems economically important for electricity generation and localization of ore deposits. Despite their potential importance, the poor exposure that is typical in caldera settings has limited the number of detailed studies of the relationship between caldera structures and fluid flow. We use field mapping, outcrop scale scanline transects, and petrographic analyses to characterize fault rocks, alteration, and veins in the well-exposed 22.9 Ma Lake City caldera fossil hydrothermal system. The caldera margin consists of relatively straight segments linked by more structurally complex intersections; these structural intricacies produce a zone of deformation that can reach >300 m wide. Structural analyses show that the wide (up to ~60 m) fault core of the ring fault contains abundant subparallel veins, with orientations similar to that of the caldera margin. Smaller displacement faults inside the caldera generally have narrow (<1 m), hydrothermally cemented fault cores with more variably oriented veins in the surrounding damage zone. These findings at Lake City illustrate that fluid flow is controlled by lithology and the location and displacement of faults, e.g., ring fault versus intracaldera fault. Fault connectivity is another key control. We propose a conceptual model where fluid flow in caldera-hosted settings is influenced by: (1) the presence of favorable lithologies (proximity to magmatic intrusions and/or the presence of permeable lithologies), (2) a high density of faults and fractures, and (3) favorable orientations of faults and fractures that promote the formation of discontinuity intersections.
