Introduction: Frailty is conventionally diagnosed using clinical tests and self-reported assessments. However, digital health technologies (DHTs), such as wearable accelerometers, can capture physical activity and gait during daily life, enabling more objective assessments. In this study, we assess the feasibility of deploying DHTs in community-dwelling older individuals, and investigate the relationship between digital measurements of physical activity and gait in naturalistic environments and participants' frailty status, as measured by conventional assessments. Methods: Fried Frailty Score (FFS) was used to classify fifty healthy individuals as non-frail (FFS = 0, n/female = 21/11, mean ± SD age: 71.10 ± 3.59 years), pre-frail (FFS = 1–2, n/female = 23/9, age: 73.74 ± 5.52 years), or frail (FFS = 3+, n/female = 6/6, age: 70.70 ± 6.53 years). Participants wore wrist-worn and lumbar-worn GENEActiv accelerometers (Activinsights Ltd., Kimbolton, UK) during three in-laboratory visits, and at-home for 2 weeks, to measure physical activity and gait. After this period, they completed a comfort and usability questionnaire. Compliant days at-home were defined as follows: those with ≥18 h of wear time, for the wrist-worn accelerometer, and those with ≥1 detected walking bout, for the lumbar-worn accelerometer. For each at-home measurement, a group analysis was performed using a linear regression model followed by ANOVA, to investigate the effect of frailty on physical activity and gait. Correlation between at-home digital measurements and conventional in-laboratory assessments was also investigated. Results: Participants were highly compliant in wearing the accelerometers, as 94% indicated willingness to wear the wrist device, and 66% the lumbar device, for at least 1 week. Time spent in sedentary activity and time spent in moderate activity as measured from the wrist device, as well as average gait speed and its 95th percentile from the lumbar device were significantly different between frailty groups. Moderate correlations between digital measurements and self-reported physical activity were found. Conclusions: This work highlights the feasibility of deploying DHTs in studies involving older individuals. The potential of digital measurements in distinguishing frailty phenotypes, while unobtrusively collecting unbiased data, thus minimizing participants' travels to sites, will be further assessed in a follow-up study. We present 40 new 10Be exposure ages of moraines and other glacial deposits left behind by the southeastern sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) in southern New England and New York, summarize the regional moraine record, and interpret the dataset in the context of previously published deglaciation chronologies. The regional moraine record spans the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), with the outermost ridge of the terminal complex dating to ~26–25 ka, the innermost ridge of the terminal complex dating to ~22 ka, and a series of smaller recessional limits within ~50 km of the terminal complex dating to ~21–20.5 ka. The chronology generally agrees with independent age constraints from radiocarbon and glacial varves. A few inconsistencies among ages from cosmogenic-nuclide measurements and those from other dating methods are explained by geologic scatter where several bedrock samples and boulders from the outer terminal moraine exhibit nuclide inheritance, while exposure ages on large moraines are likely affected by postdepositional disturbance. The exposure-age chronology places the southeastern sector of the LIS at or near its maximum extent from ~26 to 21 ka, which is broadly consistent with the LGM sea-level lowstand, local and regional temperature indicators, and local summer insolation. The net change in LIS extent represented by this chronology occurred more slowly (<5 to 25 m yr-1) than retreat through the rest of New England, consistent with a slow general rise in insolation and modeled summer temperature. We conclude that the major pulse of LIS deglaciation and accelerated recession, recorded by dated glacial deposits north of the moraines discussed here, did not begin until after atmospheric CO2 increased at ~18 ka, marking the onset of Termination 1. Large, resistant, quartz‐rich boulders deposited on hillslopes and in channels armour the landscape, trap sediment and influence hillslope angle and erodibility. In the Virginia Appalachians, such boulders are a significant component of hillslopes and channels. Establishing the timing of and processes responsible for bedrock fracture and boulder deposition is a critical piece of understanding the landscape as a system. In this study, we use cosmogenic 10Be exposure dating to resolve the timing of boulder deposition at three sites in the Virginia Valley and Ridge province: Gap Mountain, Brush Mountain and Little Stony Creek, and at one site in the Virginia Blue Ridge: Devil's Marbleyard. The correlation between measured boulder exposure ages (101.7 ± 6.9 ka to 10.8 ± 0.8 ka; n = 23) and the Wisconsin Glacial Stage and subsequent Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) deglaciation (~115–11.7 ka) suggests a periglacial origin for deposition of large hillslope and channel boulders in the Virginia Appalachians. The lack of boulder exposure ages corresponding to the Last Interglacial Stage or following Wisconsin LIS retreat suggests interglacial non‐deposition and stability. The absence of exposure ages from the penultimate Illinoian or older Quaternary Glacial Stages suggests that periglacial hillslope processes allow the landscape to be resurfaced with large boulders during each return to cold climate conditions. This cyclic resurfacing of hillslopes and channels is an example of how climatic oscillations insert disequilibrium into the landscape cycle and contributes to our appreciation of the timescales over which contemporary climate change may impact boulder dominated landscapes in rapidly warming alpine and arctic environments. This article has arisen from a study involving teachers in an early childhood centre and their responses to being introduced to schema learning theory. As a former practitioner in early childhood education and in my current role in initial teacher education, I have an interest in cognitive constructivist learning theories from both developmental and sociocultural pedagogies and how these theories have changed and adapted over time. While some would suggest schema learning theory and sociocultural approaches to children's learning are pedagogically worlds apart, it is the purpose of this article to highlight the benefits and possibilities for both. Schema theory involves teachers identifying, interpreting, and extending learning while sociocultural approaches use the discourse of noticing, recognising, and responding. This article suggests when teachers use schema learning theory "within" sociocultural approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment, they are able to explore children's thinking more explicitly in their practice.

The Nipigon channels, located to the west and northwest of Lake Nipigon, Ontario, are thought to have enabled the eastward drainage of meltwater from glacial Lake Agassiz during the last deglaciation. Here we present the first direct ages of flood deposits in two of these channels using [sup.10]Be surface exposure dating. Five [sup.10]Be ages of a coarse- grained deposit near the Roaring River in the Kaiashk channel complex indicate deglaciation and cessation of water flow by ~11070 ± 430 years. To test for inherited nuclides in boulder samples, we also measured the [sup.10]Be concentrations of the undersides of two boulders at the Roaring River site. Five [sup.10]Be ages of boulders atop a large bed form near Mundell Lake in the Pillar channel complex indicate deglaciation and cessation of water flow by ~10 770 ± 240 years. Two [sup.10]Be ages of nearby bedrock are slightly younger (10 340 ± 260 and 9860 ± 270 years). The [sup.10]Be ages from the two sites are statistically indistinguishable and indicate that Laurentide Ice Sheet recession occurred rapidly in the region. We used clast diameters and channel dimensions at the Mundell Lake site to estimate paleodischarge and evaluate the possibility that meltwater drainage influenced climate conditions. We estimate a large maximum discharge of 119 000-159 000 [m.sup.3] x [s.sup.-1] at the site. However, the timing of meltwater discharge at both Roaring River and Mundell Lake is not contemporaneous with abrupt climate events. The magnitude of tropical cooling during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ∼19–26.5 ka) remains controversial, with sea‐surface temperatures cooling by several degrees less than most temperatures reconstructed at high elevations. To explain this discrepancy, past studies proposed a steeper (increased) lapse rate—the temperature decrease with elevation—during the LGM relative to today. For instance, LGM temperatures in East Africa reconstructed from branched GDGTs from multiple elevations support an ∼0.9°C/km increase in the lapse rate during the LGM relative to present day. Lapse rates are a critical part of the Earth's climate sensitivity and atmospheric energy transfer, and it is vital to know whether and by how much the tropical lapse rate steepened during the LGM. Here, we simulate LGM glacier extents in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda with and without a change in lapse rate using a range of temperature and precipitation estimates. We find that the lapse rate must have been steeper than present for glaciers to reach their LGM positions using available sea‐level temperature and precipitation estimates for East Africa. Plain Language Summary: Glaciers are sensitive to changes in temperature and precipitation, and during the last ice age (∼20,000 years ago), glaciers in the tropics grew in cold (5°C–9°C) and dry conditions while sea surface temperatures changed relatively little (∼1°C–3°C). Perhaps the temperature estimates are telling different stories, or perhaps they are both correct and the rate of cooling with elevation (lapse rate) was steeper (increased) during the drier conditions of the ice age. Here, we use a glacier model and a range of temperature, precipitation, and lapse rate estimates to grow glaciers to moraines (glacial deposits) that mark their ice age extent at 20,000 years ago. Results indicate that glaciers can reach the moraines using the modest sea surface temperature change and a steeper lapse rate, which is supported by available biogeochemical analysis in this area or a large change in temperature and no lapse rate change, which is not supported by sea surface temperature estimates. Climate alterations in the tropics have global implications, and understanding how the lapse rate can change with time and location is vital for informing climate change models. Sediment cores from 13 lakes in a 1500 km transect along the eastern North American Arctic contain up to four superposed stratified interglacial units. All 13 lakes contain one unit with sediment similar in character and mass to Holocene gyttja, with 14C ages >40 ka, luminescence ages 90 to 120 ka, and pollen assemblages that require nearly complete Laurentide deglaciation, supporting a Last Interglacial (LIG; MIS 5e) age. Two lakes preserve an older interglacial, with luminescence ages suggesting an MIS 7 age. Four adjacent lakes record a thin, stratified organic unit between the LIG and Holocene units with 14C ages >50 ka, that is probably from late in MIS 5. Temperature estimates from biotic proxies suggest LIG summer temperatures 4–6°C above mid‐20th century values; pollen, chironomids and DNA document a poleward expansion of woody plants and invertebrate species during the LIG, supporting arguments that positive feedbacks native to the Arctic amplified insolation‐driven summer temperature increases. The stratigraphic succession implies the Laurentide Ice Sheet remained intact with sea level below ‐40 m from ~115 ka to ~11 ka, and places new constraints on the interpretation of cosmogenic radionuclide inventories in erratic boulders older than the Holocene throughout this region. Situated in the Transantarctic Mountains, western Victoria Valley is in a key position to test the late Cenozoic stability of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, as well as that of the surrounding landscape surface. Victoria drift, which covers most of western Victoria Valley, represents a peculiar yet common type of deposit in the region. The sedimentology of Victoria drift is dominated by loose, sorted material, which preserves lacustrine algae, quite unlike tills in the Dry Valleys. Ridges characterize its morphology. Extraordinarily old ridges and mounds as well as fresh features and unweathered and perched boulders occur without apparent order. Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates of algae from within Victoria drift range from 11 054 [+ or -] 95 to >45 000 [sup.14]C yr B.P. and are not arrayed in chronological order across the drift sheet. Resting on a Miocene erosion surface, Victoria drift is the only widespread deposit in western Victoria Valley younger than ca. 14 Ma. One hypothesis is that the drift consists of moraines. The strength of this hypothesis is that it explains the arcuate form of many ridges. However, it does not explain the sedimentology, weathering characteristics, or radiocarbon dates. A second hypothesis is that Victoria drift is a unique polar glaciolacustrine sediment facies deposited by a 'lake-ice conveyer.' The morphologic features, sedimentology, weathering characteristics, and radiocarbon dates of the drift are all consistent with deposition in a perennially ice-covered lake. This second hypothesis implies polar glacial conditions during deposition of the drift sheet in order to maintain a permanently ice-covered proglacial lake. The Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) was the largest ice sheet during the last glacial period. An accurate representation of its behavior during the last deglaciation is critical to understanding its influence on and response to a changing climate. We use 10Be dating and Bayesian modeling to track the recession of the southwest sector of the Labrador Dome of the LIS along an ~500-km-long transect west of Lake Superior during the last deglaciation. This transect reflects terrestrial ice-margin retreat and crosses multiple moraine sets, with the southwestern part of the transect deglaciated by ca. 19 ka and the northeastern part deglaciated by ca. 10 ka. The predominant behavior of the ice margin during this interval is near-constant retreat with retreat rates varying between ~59 m/a and 38 m/a. The moraine sets mark standstills and/or readvances that in total constitute only ~17% of the retreat interval. The spatial and temporal pattern of ice-margin retreat tracked here differs from existing reconstructions that are based on using isochrons to define ice-margin positions. Acknowledging the uncertainties associated with the modeled ages of ice-margin retreat, we suggest that the overall retreat pattern is consistent with forcing by a gradual increase in Northern Hemisphere, high-latitude summer insolation. The pattern of ice-margin retreat is inconsistent with Greenland ice-core temperature records, and thus these records may not be suitable to drive models of the LIS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A key challenge facing the mental health field is connecting children and families to services when symptoms first appear. Multiple barriers inhibit timely access to treatment, and interventions to resolve barriers to care are not common among health and social care organisations. To address this research‐to‐practice gap this study undertook a scoping review of the empirical literature aimed at identifying key factors in the social ecology of families which influence family engagement with child and adolescent mental health services, then identifying and describing models of intervention designed to help facilitate access to care. Forty studies published between 1 January 2000 and 28 February 2019 were reviewed. Key factors associated with child and adolescent mental health service engagement included family attitudes towards mental illness and help seeking, the flexibility and availability of needed services, community attitudes and stigma surrounding mental illness and mental health treatment, and the degree of coordination and integration across systems of health and social care. Models of intervention to facilitate engagement with mental health services included family outreach, telephone and digital health strategies, and integrated care approaches. Empirical support is strongest for family outreach and integrated care, although telephone and digital health strategies are underexplored with children and families and a potentially promising avenue for future research. To support family engagement with child and adolescent mental health services health and social care organisations should be prepared to identify barriers in their local practice settings and integrate efficacious engagement approaches into their continuum of available services. Tropical glaciers are retreating rapidly, threatening alpine ecosystems across the low latitudes. Understanding how tropical glaciers responded to past periods of warming is crucial for predicting and adapting to future climate change, yet relatively little is known about glacial fluctuations in tropical regions during the recent past (i.e., the Holocene Epoch). This is particularly true in the African tropics, where data constraining the timing and magnitude of Holocene glacial fluctuations in the region are sparse and where temperatures during the middle Holocene were perhaps as warm as or warmer than today. Here we present new beryllium-10 surface-exposure ages that constrain Holocene glacial extents in the equatorial Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda. These results document rapid Early Holocene (~11.7-8.2 ka) glacial retreat in two separate catchments and indicate that Late Holocene (~4.2 ka-present) deposits mark the greatest expansion of Rwenzori glaciers during the last ~11 ka. Holocene glacial fluctuations elsewhere in tropical Africa and in tropical South America are broadly similar to those in the Rwenzori, with most tropical glaciers retreating rapidly during the Early Holocene and remaining near or inboard of their Late Holocene positions through much of Holocene time. The similarity of Holocene glacial fluctuations across the tropics implies that low-latitude glaciers responded to a common forcing mechanism, most likely temperature. Although the drivers of Holocene temperature changes in the tropics remains enigmatic, these data help constrain the expression of tropical temperature changes in the low latitudes. Background: There are no FDA-approved pharmacotherapies for cannabis use disorders (CUD), despite the evaluation of numerous medications. Notably, chronic dosing of oral naltrexone decreases self-administration of cannabis in human laboratory studies.Objectives: To test the feasibility of long-acting injectable naltrexone for the treatment of CUD, while obtaining preliminary safety and efficacy data.Methods: Twelve adult participants (seven male) meeting DSM-IV-TR criteria for cannabis dependence enrolled into an 8-week, open-label pilot study conducted at an academic treatment research clinic. They received 380 mg intramuscular injections of long-acting naltrexone on study day 1 and at the start of study week 5. Outcome measures included percentages of study completers and participants who received the second injection, frequency of adverse events (AEs), and cannabis consumption measured by average daily grams, dollars, and using days per week as measured by timeline follow-back and urine oral delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentrations.Results: Of the 12 participants enrolled in the study, 9 completed the study and 6 received the second injection. There were no severe AEs but an unexpected AE led to the addition of supportive medications to the protocol. Number of cannabis use days per week significantly decreased over the course of the study (p = .001). Creatinine-corrected urine THC concentrations and average daily cannabis use per study week in grams and in dollars did not decrease over the course of the study.Conclusions: Long-acting injectable naltrexone is a feasible intervention for CUD worthy of further study in a placebo-controlled, double-blinded randomized clinical trial. Projections of future rates of mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet are highly uncertain because its sensitivity to warming is unclear. Geologic reconstructions of Quaternary interglacials can illustrate how the ice sheet responded during past warm periods, providing insights into ice sheet behavior and important tests for data-model comparisons. However, paleoclimate records from Greenland are limited: Early Holocene peak warmth has been quantified at only a few sites, and terrestrial sedimentary records of prior interglacials are exceptionally rare due to glacial erosion during the last glacial period. Here, we discuss findings from a lacustrine archive that records both the Holocene and the Last Interglacial (LIG) from Greenland, allowing for direct comparison between two interglacials. Sedimentary chironomid assemblages indicate peak July temperatures 4.0 to 7.0 ±C warmer than modern during the Early Holocene maximum in summer insolation. Chaoborus and chironomids in LIG sediments indicate July temperatures at least 5.5 to 8.5 ±C warmer than modern. These estimates indicate pronounced warming in northwest Greenland during both interglacials. This helps explain dramatic ice sheet thinning at Camp Century in northwest Greenland during the Early Holocene and, for the LIG, aligns with controversial estimates of Eemianwarming from ice core data retrieved in northern Greenland. Converging geologic evidence for strong LIG warming is challenging to reconcile with inferred Greenland Ice Sheet extent during the LIG, and the two appear incompatible in many models of ice sheet evolution. An increase in LIG snowfall could help resolve this problem, pointing to the need for hydroclimate reconstructions from the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Much of Greenland experienced summers warmer than present in parts of the early to middle Holocene, during a precession-driven positive anomaly in summer insolation. However, the magnitude of that warmth remains poorly known, and its timing and spatial pattern are uncertain. Here we describe the first quantitative Holocene palaeotemperature reconstruction from central East Greenland based upon insect (chironomid) assemblages preserved in lake sediments. We postulate that landscapes like our study site, characterized by minimal soil and vegetation development through the Holocene and thus little influenced by some important secondary gradients, are especially well suited to the use of chironomids to reconstruct Holocene temperatures. The inferred timing of warmth at our study site near Scoresby Sund agrees well with other nearby evidence, including glacial geological reconstructions and temperatures inferred from precipitation isotopes at Renland ice cap, supporting the use of chironomids to reconstruct temperatures at this site. We infer highest temperatures from c. 10 to 5.5 ka, followed by gradual cooling after 5.5 ka and progressively colder and less productive conditions after 3.5 ka. Models based upon two independent training sets yield similar inferred temperature trends, and suggest an average summer temperature anomaly from c. 10 to 5.5 ka of 3 to 4 °C relative to the preindustrial last millennium. The estimated overall rate of Neoglacial cooling averaged over the period from 5.5 to 0.5 ka was 0.6 to 0.8 °C per thousand years, more than twice the rate previously estimated for the Arctic as a whole. Given strong apparent spatial variability in Holocene climate around the Arctic, and the utility of palaeoclimate data for improving climate and ice-sheet models, it should be a priority to further quantify past temperature changes around the margins of the Greenland Ice Sheet, where few quantitative reconstructions exist and future warming will affect global sea level. Deciphering the climate changes that influenced the glacial fluctuations of the last millennium requires documenting the spatial and temporal patterns of these glacial events. Here, we estimate the change in equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) between the most prominent glacial advance of the last millennium and the present for four alpine glaciers located in different climatic regimes along the Andes. For each glacier, we reconstruct scenarios of climatic conditions (temperature and precipitation anomalies) that accommodate the observed ELA changes. We focus on the following glaciers: an alpine glacier in the Cordillera Vilcanota (13°S), Tapado glacier (30°S), Cipreses glacier (34°S), and Tranquilo glacier (47°S). Our results show that the range of possible temperature and precipitation anomalies that accommodate the observed ELA changes overlap significantly at three of the four sites (i.e. Vilcanota, Cipreses, and Tranquilo). Only Tapado glacier exhibits a set of climate anomalies that differs from the other three sites. Assuming no change in precipitation, the estimated ELA changes require a cooling of at least 0.7°C in the Cordillera Vilcanota, 1.0°C at Tapado glacier, 0.6°C at Cipreses glacier, and 0.7°C at Tranquilo glacier. Conversely, assuming no change in temperature, the estimated ELA changes are explained by increases in precipitation exceeding 0.52 m yr-1 (64% of the annual precipitation) in the Cordillera Vilcanota, 0.3 1 m yr-1 (89%) at Tapado glacier, 0.22 m yr-1 (27%) at Cipreses glacier, and 0.3 m yr-1 (27%) at Tranquilo glacier. By mapping the ELA changes and modeling the potential climate forcing across diverse climate settings, we aim to contribute toward documenting the spatial variability of climate conditions during the last millennium, a key step to decipher the mechanisms underlying the glacial fluctuation that occurred during this period. We investigated the response of lake algal communities to changes in glacial meltwater from the Renland Ice Cap (Greenland) through the Holocene to assess whether influxes always elicit consistent responses or novel responses. We measured sedimentary algal pigments in two proximal lakes, snow-fed Raven and glacier- and snow-fed Bunny Lake, and diatom community structure and turnover in Bunny Lake. Diatom data were not available in Raven Lake. We also modeled lake-level change in Bunny Lake to identify how glacial meltwater may have altered diatom habitat availability through time. Through a series of glacier advances and retreats over the Holocene, the algal response in Bunny Lake was relatively constant until approximately 1015 yr BP, after which there were major changes in sedimentary algal remains. Algal pigment concentrations sharply declined, and diatom species richness increased. Diatom community structure underwent three reorganizations. Until 1015 yr BP, assemblages were dominated by Pinnularia braunii and Aulacoseira pffaffiana. However, approximately 1015-480 yr BP, these species declined and Tabellaria flocculosa and Hannaea arcus became a significant component of the assemblage. Approximately 440 yr BP, A. pfaffiana increased along with species indicating elevated nitrogen. In contrast, the algal pigment records from nearby snow-fed Raven Lake showed different and minimal change through time. Our results suggest that changes in the magnitude and composition of meltwater in our two study lakes were unique over the last 1000 yr BP and elicited a non-linear threshold response absent during other periods of glacier advance and retreat. Records of clastic sediment from lakes that receive glacial meltwater provide a means for inferring past glacial fluctuations. However, increased clastic sedimentation has been interpreted to indicate both glacial advance and recession. Here we examine the timing of clastic sediment deposition in Challpacocha, a glacially fed lake located downvalley from Quelccaya Ice Cap (QIC), Peru, in comparison with known ice cap margin fluctuations. Using a comparison with a nearby non-glacial lake, Yanacocha, we document that a record of clastic sediment flux from Challpacocha reflects meltwater-derived sediment. We then compare the clastic sediment record from Challpacocha with the Qori Kalis glacier moraine record. We find that organic-rich sediment was deposited primarily during the late Holocene advance of QIC (before CE 1490). In contrast, clastic sediment was deposited during QIC recession (~CE 1490-1970). Peaks in clastic sediment flux are associated with the onset of ice retreat. We suggest that this pattern of clastic sediment deposition reflects changing meltwater production and/ or glacial erosion during ice advance and retreat and supports models of increased clastic sedimentation during ice retreat. Glaciers on the world's highest tropical mountains are among the most sensitive components of the cryosphere, yet the climatic controls that influence their fluctuations are not fully understood. Here we present the first 10Be ages of glacial moraines in Africa and use these to assess the climatic conditions that influenced past tropical glacial extents. We applied 10Be surface exposure dating to determine the ages of quartz-rich boulders atop moraines in the Rwenzori Mountains (~1°N, 30°E), located on the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The 10Be ages document expanded glaciers ca. 23.4 and 20.1 ka, indicating that glaciers in equatorial East Africa advanced during the global Last Glacial Maximum (ca. 26-19.5 ka). A comparison of these moraine ages with regional paleoclimate records indicates that Rwenzori glaciers expanded contemporaneously with dry and cold conditions. Recession from the moraines occurred after ca. 20.1 ka, similar in timing to a rise in air temperature documented in East African lake records. Our results suggest that, on millennial time scales, past fluctuations of Rwenzori glaciers were strongly influenced by air temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
