The tribological behavior of three Fe–Cr alloys with Cr contents ranging from ~12 to 16 wt.% as well as low-alloy high-carbon 52100 steel were investigated using pin-on-disk wear testing. Wear tests were performed in both open atmospheric (dry) and biomass environments (wet). Delamination and abrasion were observed to be the dominant wear regimes following dry wear tests. For wet testing, adhesion and pitting corrosion were determined to be the primary wear mechanisms in the Fe–Cr alloys while adhesion and delamination/cracking were identified as the primary wear mechanisms in the 52100 steel. The 440C stainless steel and 52100 steel specimens exhibited the lowest wear volume following dry (7.58 ± 0.52 mm3 and 0.78 ± 0.05 mm3, respectively) and wet wear testing (0.11 ± 0.06 mm3 and 0.12 ± 0.09 mm3, respectively); however, these specimens exhibited the most significant corrosion damage. The 410 stainless steel specimen exhibited the best resistance to corrosion after wear testing in the deacetylated and disc-refined corn stover slurry and had measured wear volumes after dry and wet wear testing of 6.84 ± 0.88 mm3 and 0.33 ± 0.12 mm3, respectively. The worst wear resistance was observed by the 420 stainless steel specimen after both dry and wet wear testing.

Pure nanocrystalline akermanite was successfully synthesized by mechanical activation and heat treatment of talc, calcium carbonate, and silicate. Powders were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), x-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation mechanism was studied in depth. These results showed that akermanite was produced by the formation and consumption of transitionary compounds such as enstatite, wollastonite, larnite, and merwinite. Pure akermanite was synthesized with a crystalline size of 34 nm after ball milling for 20 h and subsequent heat treatment at 900 °C for 1 h.

This review paper discusses the formation and propagation of adiabatic shear bands in nickel-based superalloys. The formation of adiabatic shear bands (ASBs) is a unique dynamic phenomenon that typically precedes catastrophic, unpredicted failure in many metals under impact or ballistic loading. ASBs are thin regions that undergo substantial plastic shear strain and material softening due to the thermo-mechanical instability induced by the competitive work hardening and thermal softening processes. Dynamic recrystallization of the material’s microstructure in the shear region can occur and encourages shear localization and the formation of ASBs. Phase transformations are also often seen in ASBs of ferrous metals due to the elevated temperatures reached in the narrow shear region. ASBs ultimately lead to the local degradation of material properties within a narrow band wherein micro-voids can more easily nucleate and grow compared to the surrounding material. As the micro-voids grow, they will eventually coalesce leading to crack formation and eventual fracture. For elevated temperature applications, such as in the aerospace industry, nickel-based superalloys are used due to their high strength. Understanding the formation conditions of ASBs in nickel-based superalloys is also beneficial in extending the life of machining tools. The main goal of the review is to identify the formation mechanisms of ASBs, the microstructural evolutions associated with ASBs in nickel-based alloys, and their consequent effect on material properties. Under a shear strain rate of 80,000 s−1, the critical shear strain at which an ASB forms is between 2.2 and 3.2 for aged Inconel 718 and 4.5 for solution-treated Inconel 718. Shear band widths are reported to range between 2 and 65 microns for nickel-based superalloys. The shear bands widths are narrower in samples that are aged compared to samples in the annealed or solution treated condition.

Single crystal Ni-based superalloys are often used to create gas turbine engine blades for their high strength under intense thermo-mechanical loading. Though they are remarkably capable under these conditions, a particular class of premature failure mechanisms known as surface-initiated damage mechanisms can lead to the early fracture of an otherwise healthy blade. This review paper discusses the current progress of post-processing techniques that can greatly mitigate the potency of surface-initiated damage mechanisms. In particular, laser peening (LP) is of significant interest due to the relatively low amount of cold work it induces, greater depth of compressive residual stresses than other cold working methods, ability to accommodate complex part geometries, and the minuscule effect it has on surface roughness. The residual stresses imparted by LP can greatly hinder crack growth and consequently allow for enhanced fatigue life. Given that turbine blades (constructed with single crystal Ni-based superalloys) are prone to fail by these mechanisms, LP could be a worthy choice for increasing their service lives. For this reason, initiative has been taken to better understand the mechanical and microstructural modifications imparted by LP on single crystal Ni-based superalloys and a summary of these investigations are presented in this review. Results from several works show that this class of alloy responds well to LP treatment with improvements such as ~30–50% increase in microhardness, 72% increase in low cycle fatigue life, and elevated resistance to hot corrosion. The primary objective of this review is to provide insight into current state-of-the-art LP techniques and summarize the findings of numerous works which have utilized LP for increasing the service lives of single crystal Ni-based superalloy components.

In this research, a finite element (FE) technique was used to predict the residual stresses in laser-peened aluminum 5083 at different power densities. A dynamic pressure profile was used to create the pressure wave in an explicit model, and the stress results were extracted once the solution was stabilized. It is shown that as power density increases from 0.5 to 4 GW/cm2, the induced residual stresses develop monotonically deeper from 0.42 to 1.40 mm. However, with an increase in the power density, the maximum magnitude of the sub-surface stresses increases only up to a certain threshold (1 GW/cm2 for aluminum 5083). Above this threshold, a complex interaction of the elastic and plastic waves occurring at peak pressures above ≈2.5 Hugoniot Elastic Limit (HEL) results in decreased surface stresses. The FE results are corroborated with physical experiments and observations.

While attributes such as small dimensions, low power consumption, fast sensor response, and a wide range of detection give one-dimensional nanostructures excellent potential to revolutionize sensor and detector industries, challenges to achieving uniform stoichiometry pose significant obstacles to their commercial use. Diverse characteristics arise from nanostructures with variable compositions and morphologies. Thus, investigation of physical properties of nanostructures would be pointless if one cannot assure the exact stoichiometry of the material. We studied the stoichiometry of ZnTe nanowires grown via the vapor-liquid-solid method. Different microscopy and composition analysis methods were exploited to study the stoichiometry of the nanowires. It was observed that nonstoichiometric wires had relatively higher defect concentrations. The temperature profile along the substrate during nanowire growth was found to be the reason for the formation of nanowires with different stoichiometries.

The superior intrinsic mechanical properties of graphene have been widely studied and utilized to enhance the mechanical properties of various composite materials. However, it is still unclear how heterostructures incorporating graphene behave, and to what extent graphene influences their mechanical response. In this work, a series of graphene/Al2O3 composite films were fabricated via atomic layer deposition of Al2O3 on graphene, and their mechanical behavior was studied using an experimental-computational approach. The inclusion of monolayer chemical vapor deposited graphene between ultrathin Al2O3 films (1.5–4.5 nm thickness) was found to enhance the overall stiffness by as much as 70% compared to a pure Al2O3 film of similar thickness (∼150 GPa to ∼250 GPa). Here, for the first time, the combination of graphene and Al2O3 in vertically-stacked heterostructures results in advanced hybrid films of unprecedented mechanical stiffness that also possess qualities desirable for graphene-based transistors and flexible electronics. Many applications of graphene can benefit from the enhanced mechanical robustness of graphene-based components. We report how the stiffness of vertical graphene (VG) sheets is affected by the introduction of defects and fluorination, both separately and combined. The defects were created using a high-energy ion beam while fluorination was performed in a XeF2 etching system. After ion bombardment alone, the average effective reduced modulus (Er), equal to ∼4.9 MPa for the as-grown VG sheets, approximately doubled to ∼10.0 MPa, while fluorination alone almost quadrupled it to ∼18.4 MPa. The maximum average Er of ∼32.4 MPa was achieved by repeatedly applying fluorination and ion bombardment. This increase can be explained by the formation of covalent bonds between the VG sheets due to ion bombardment, as well as the conversion from sp2 to sp3 and increased corrugation due to fluorination. We report the fabrication and characterization of graphene nanostructures with mechanical properties that are tuned by conformal deposition of alumina. Vertical graphene (VG) sheets, also called carbon nanowalls (CNWs), were grown on copper foil substrates using a radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) technique and conformally coated with different thicknesses of alumina (Al2O3) using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Nanoindentation was used to characterize the mechanical properties of pristine and alumina-coated VG sheets. Results show a significant increase in the effective Young’s modulus of the VG sheets with increasing thickness of deposited alumina. Deposition of only a 5 nm thick alumina layer on the VG sheets nearly triples the effective Young’s modulus of the VG structures. Both energy absorption and strain recovery were lower in VG sheets coated with alumina than in pure VG sheets (for the same peak force). This may be attributed to the increase in bending stiffness of the VG sheets and the creation of connections between the sheets after ALD deposition. These results demonstrate that the mechanical properties of VG sheets can be tuned over a wide range through conformal atomic layer deposition, facilitating the use of VG sheets in applications where specific mechanical properties are needed.
