Photosynthesis decline, resulting from changing evapotranspiration levels and varying growing conditions, can lead to crop failure. To prevent damage, it is essential to assess carotenoid and chlorophyll content, and crop responses to limited irrigation. In this experiment, we studied strawberry responses to photosynthetic pigments, physiological parameters, and macronutrient concentrations under different irrigation levels (IR100 and IR50), mulch colors (black, silver, transparent), and harvest dates in Turkey. The results showed significant effects on total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll a/b, and carotenoid levels due to irrigation and dap applications. Fruit N, P, and K concentrations were significantly influenced by irrigation and mulch colors but unaffected by different periods. Leaf water potential (ΨL) and stomatal conductance (gs) were significantly impacted by all treatments. Silver mulch retained more water (31%) and had higher gs (28%) than other treatments. Silver and black mulch resulted in the highest macro nutrient concentrations in the fruit. IR50 reduced chlorophyll and carotenoid levels, ΨL, gs, and N, P, and K concentrations. Our findings highlight the benefits of using appropriate mulch colors and irrigation amounts, with silver mulch x IR100 combination mitigating the impact of limited irrigation under Mediterranean climate conditions. Climate change poses significant threats to agricultural systems, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of its impact for effective adaptation strategies. This study examines the influence of climate change on agriculture in the United States, primarily focusing on temperature shifts and precipitation variations. Utilizing historical data and climate projections, we analyse trends in mean temperature and precipitation patterns from 1950 to 2020. The results indicate a noteworthy increase in annual mean temperature over the years, attributed to climate change. This rise in temperature has multifaceted implications, including heat stress in crops and exacerbation of drought conditions. The study also explores the complex relationship between precipitation patterns and climate change, highlighting regional variations and potential shifts in future precipitation trends. By projecting data under SSP 1-1.9 emission scenario, we assess potential changes in mean temperatures, hot days, and precipitation for 2040-2059 periods. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the interplay between climate change and agricultural systems, emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies to secure food production and mitigate potential risks. The findings underscore the urgency of proactive measures to safeguard agricultural sustainability and resilience in the face of evolving climatic conditions.

The present communication is the first report on the clinical use of the alcohol dipstick to continuously monitor alcoholics' drinking during treatment Daily urine samples from 34 alcoholics were tested for alcohol by the clinical staff using the alcohol dipstick. The patients also provided self-reports of drinking daily. Patients' compliance for submitting urine samples and for completing daily monitoring sheets (DMS) was 93 and 95%, respectively. Over 75% of the patients drank on at least one occasion; about half of these patients denied drinking detected by the urine tests. Drinking was confirmed by both methods in 39% of the patients who drank, and by the urine testing alone in 54%. The patients in treatment for less than 2 months were abstinent on 85% of the days compared to 98% for those in treatment for 6 months or longer. Seventy-two percent of all alcohol-positive urine samples were submitted by patients on days when they denied drinking. The efficacy of enzyme-linked immunosorhent assay (ELISA) was evaluated in the sera of 215 individuals as a diagnostic aid in abdominal tuberculosis. The subjects had abdominal tuberculosis (group 1), intestinal disorders other than tuberculosis (group 2), cirrhosis of the liver (group 3), and peritoneal malignancy (group 4). Sera from patients of pulmonary tuberculosis and healthy volunteers (group 5) were also analyzed for enzyme activity and served as positive and negative controls. In patients with abdominal tuberculosis, the absorbance (OD) values were significantly higher than for the other groups and healthy volunteers (p < 0.001). OD values were similar in abdominal and pulmonary tuberculosis (p > 0.05). Level above 0.7 (OD) in serum suggests tuberculosis with a sensitivity of 81%, specificity of 88%, and a diagnostic accuracy of 84%. These results suggest that ELISA may be used for the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis and in differentiating it from other nontuberculous abdominal diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study was carried out at the Department of Surgery, All India Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, New Delhi, between January 1982 and October 1984. Clinical diagnosis of acute cholecystitis was confirmed by ultrasound scanning or Tc labelled HIDA Scan. Group I (n=24) comprised patients who underwent emergency cholecystectomy while Group II (n=23) comprised patients who were managed conservatively, and had an elective cholecystectomy performed 6-12 weeks later. There was no mortality or wound infection in either group. The incidence of other complications was 8.3 per cent and 8.6 per cent in Groups I and II, respectively. Emergency cholecystectomy (Group I) reduced the total hospital stay of a patient by approximately 70 per cent and post cholecystectomy syndrome was seen in Group II patients only. We thus recommend emergency or early cholecystectomy during the acute stage of cholecystitis, as it is safe, effective and economical, provided it is done by an experienced surgeon. A retrospective review of 143 cases of carcinoma of the gall bladder is presented. The disease was more common in females in the 5th and 6th decades. Pain, anorexia, weight loss and jaundice were the common presenting symptoms, and hepatomegaly and palpable gall bladder the common signs. Laboratory and radiological investigations were merely confirmatory as the diagnosis in a majority of the cases was clinically obvious. Aspiration cytology and laparoscopic biopsy were of help in obtaining histological diagnosis. Only 47 patients were considered fit enough to undergo laparotomy. In a majority of these patients biopsy alone was possible while palliative procedures were performed in the others. The operative mortality was 18% even in this selected group of patients, due to the poor general condition and the advanced stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis. Curative resection may be possible and long term survival is expected in incidentally found carcinoma at cholecystectomy. The only hope lies in prevention by prompt treatment of patients with benign biliary disease. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
