Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) that can cause adverse effects on human health. The incorporation of materials as visible light photocatalysts and its energy storage capability allow for the photodegradation of BPA, especially in the absence of a light source. To date, there have been no significant studies regarding energy storage in membrane technology, with only a focus on the suspension form. Hence, this study was conducted to degrade the pollutant through a co-extrusion process using a mixture of copper (II) oxide and tungsten oxide as the photocatalyst and energy storage materials, respectively. Both materials were embedded into polyvinylidene (PVDF) membranes to produce a Cu2O/WO3/PVDF dual-layer hollow fiber (DLHF) membrane. The outer dope extrusion flow rate was set at 3 mL/min, 6 mL/min, and 9 mL/min with photocatalyst:polymer ratios of 0.3, 0.50, and 0.7 Cu2O/WO3/PVDF, respectively. The performance of the membranes for each ratio was evaluated using 2 ppm of BPA with visible light irradiation. The results showed that each membrane's outer and inner layers featured finger-like void structures, while the intermediate part had a sponge-like structure. The membrane with the photocatalyst:polymer ratio of 0.5 was hydrophilic and had a high porosity of 54.97%, resulting in a high flow of 510 L/m2h. Under visible light irradiation, a 0.5 Cu2O/PVDF DLHF membrane with a 6-mL/min outer dope flow rate was able to remove 97.82% of 2-ppm BPA without copper leaching into the water sample. Under dark conditions, the DLHF sample showed the capability of energy storage performance and could drive certain degradation after lighting off up to 70.73% of 2-ppm BPA. The photocatalytic DLHF membrane with the ratio of 0.5 was the most optimal due to its potential morphology and ability to degrade a large amount of BPA. It is important to emphasize that usage of materials with the capability for energy storage can provide a significant contribution toward more practical membranes, so photodegradation can occur even in dark conditions. Since the major route of BPA exposure is via the oral route, BPA may have effects on the gastrointestinal tract, especially on the intestinal barrier, where most digestion and absorption processes occur. In this study, the effects of BPA-treated water on the small intestine (SI) and SI tight junction proteins (TJPs) of both pregnant Sprague–Dawley rats and their fetuses were investigated. Previously, hybrid photocatalytic filtration treatment by a visible light driven N-doped TiO2 membrane has successfully removed up to 81.6% of BPA in water. The effect of BPA-untreated (5.00 ± ppm) and BPA-treated water (0.9 ± ppm) after 21 days of exposure on the jejunum and ileum, as well as the expressions of claudin proteins, were investigated by Western blotting (WB) and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) in order to investigate the potential of the photocatalytic membrane in removing the detrimental effect of BPA. The results suggest that BPA exposure altered the morphology of villi, and affected the expression level of claudin-2, -3, and -4 proteins in the jejunum and ileum of both pregnant rats and their fetuses. Interestingly, villi and claudins expressions were undisrupted in a treated-BPA water group, which indicated that the degradation of BPA via membranes effectively mitigates the effect on BPA on gastrointestinal tract. Introduction: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental pollutant. Human beings are exposed to BPA through food and water. Due to its prolonged contact with the intestinal tract (IT), it might have harmful effects on the IT particularly in pregnant women and the fetuses. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of BPA on the morphology and tight junction protein expression of the small intestine of pregnant rats. Materials and Methods: Twelve Pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were divided into group 1 (control, n = 6) and group 2 (BPA treated, = 6). Group 1 received tween 80 and group 2 received BPA (0.2 mg/ml) in drinking water. Results: There were no significant differences in the villus height, crypt depth and the number of goblet cells in the jejunum and ileum between the two groups. Intestinal tight junction protein (ITJP) claudin 2 expression was similar in both groups. ITJPs claudin 3 and 4 were expressed less intensely in the ileum of group 2 as compared to group 1. Conclusion: Chronic low dose BPA throughout pregnancy in rats did not affect the morphology of villi, crypt, goblet cells and ITJP claudin 2 but reduced the expression of claudin 3 and 4 in the ileum, which might compromise intestinal barrier. Existing toxic solvents in the manufacturing of polymeric membranes have been raising concerns due to the risks of exposure to health and the environment. Furthermore, the lower tensile strength of the membrane renders these membranes unable to endure greater pressure during water treatment. To sustain a healthier ecosystem, fabrication of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane using a less toxic solvent, triethyl phosphate (TEP), with a lower molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) (0–3 wt.%) additive were experimentally demonstrated via a phase inversion-based spinning technique at various air gap (10, 20 and 30 cm). Membrane with 2 wt.% of PEG 400 exhibited the desired ultrafiltration asymmetric morphology, while 3 wt.% PEG 400 resulting microfiltration. The surface roughness, porosity, and water flux performance increased as the loading of PEG 400 increased. The mechanical properties and contact angle of the fabricated membrane were influenced by the air gap where 20 cm indicate 2.91 MPa and 84.72°, respectively, leading to a stronger tensile and hydrophilicity surface. Lower toxicity TEP as a solvent helped in increasing the tensile properties of the membrane as well as producing an eco-friendly membrane towards creating a sustainable environment. The comprehensive investigation in this study may present a novel composition for the robust structure of polymeric hollow fiber membrane that is suitable in membrane technology. Incorporation of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles has played an important role on the improvement of unique membrane characterization and performance, most notably the hydrophilic modification of the membrane for higher pure water permeability. Additionally, the permeability of the membrane can be improved via introduction of braid support by reducing the thickness of the membrane separation layer. Moreover, the braided hollow fiber membrane (BHFM) is able to perform under higher pressure conditions compared to hollow fiber membranes. In this paper, hybrid polysulfone (PSf)/ZnO BHFMs were fabricated via phase inversion method. Hydrophilic 10 ± 1.8 nm polycrystalline ZnO nanoparticles synthesized via sol-gel method were incorporated on BHFM to improve the hydrophilicity and increase flux with constant rejection under high pressure and the effect of the ZnO loading on the membrane properties and performance were thoroughly studied. The fabricated BHFMs with 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt% of ZnO nanoparticles concentration were defined as BHFM1, BHFM2, BHFM3 and BHFM4 respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, mechanical strength, flux performance, rejection with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fouling of best performed membrane were conducted to achieve the target of this paper. The performance of these hybrid ZnO/PSf BHFMs were compared with neat PSf hollow fiber membrane (HFM) and previous studies. The findings from this research work shows that BHFM4 has the most desired properties for wastewater treatment application. The ZnO nanoparticles in BHFM4 have improved hydrophilicity from 108.79° to 71.02°, and thus BHFM4 has increased flux performance from 36.20 to 919.12 L/m2 h at 1.0 bar pressure and 193.48 to 1909.11 L/m2h at 4.0 bar pressure when compared with BHFM1. Constant BSA rejection rates (> 90%) were observed in all BHFMs. The improved hydrophilicity and pure flux performance with constant rejection rate in high pressure conditions illustrates the suitability of fabricated ZnO/PSf BHFMs in wastewater treatment applications. The presence of bisphenol A (BPA) in various water sources has potentially led to numerous adverse effects in human such as increased in blood pressure and derangement in liver function. Thus, a reliable treatment for the removing BPA is highly required. This present work aimed to study the efficiency of visible light driven photocatalytic dual-layer hollow fiber (DLHF) membrane for the removal of BPA from water and further investigated its detrimental effects by using an in-vivo model. The prepared membranes were characterized for their morphology, particles distribution, surface roughness, crystallinity and light absorption spectra. The removal of 81.6% and 86.7% in BPA concentration was achieved for N-doped TiO2 DLHF after 360 min of visible and UV light irradiation, respectively. No significant changes for all three groups were observed in liver function test meanwhile the rats-exposed to untreated BPA water shows significance blood pressure increment contrary to rats-exposed to treated BPA water. Similarly, the normal morphology in both jejunum and ileum were altered in rats-exposed to untreated BPA water group. Altogether, the presence of N-doped TiO2 in DLHF are shown to significantly enhance the photocatalytic degradation activity under visible irradiation, which effectively mitigates the effect of BPA in an in-vivo model. Bisphenol A (BPA) and reactive black 5 (RB5) dye are among the most persistent and non-biodegradable contaminants in water which require an urgent need for the development of effective removal method. The ubiquitous existence of both contaminants could interfere with the human health and aquatic environmental balance. Photocatalytic process as one of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has shown high performance for degradation of organic compounds to the harmless materials under sensible condition. Therefore, this study aims to develop a visible-light-driven photocatalyst that can efficiently degrade BPA and RB5 present in household water. N-doped TiO2 were successfully synthesized via simple and direct sol-gel method. The prepared TiO2 nanoparticles were characterized by field emission scanning microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and Brunauere Emmette Teller (BET) analysis. The incorporation of nitrogen in TiO2 lattice exhibited excellent optical responses to visible region as revealed by UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy absorption capability at 400-600 nm. The photocatalytic activity of the N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles was measured by photocatalytic degradation of BPA and RB5 in an aqueous solution under visible-light irradiations. Degradation of BPA and RB5 was 91.3% and 89.1%, respectively after 360 min illumination. The degradation of BPA and RB5 by N-doped TiO2 was increased up to 89.8% and 88.4%, respectively under visible-light irradiation as compared to commercial TiO2 P25. This finding clearly shows that N-doped TiO2 exhibits excellent photocatalytic degradation of BPA and RB5 under visible irradiation, hence have a promising potential in removing various recalcitrant contaminants for water treatment to fulfill the public need to consume clean water.ᅟ [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
