Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a frequent cause of infection in hospitalized patients, and significant numbers of currently isolated clinical strains are resistant to standard antibiotic therapy. Here we describe the impact of three types of SPIONs on the growth of P. aeruginosa during long-term bacterial culture. Their size, structure, and physicochemical properties were determined using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. We observed significant inhibition of P. aeruginosa growth in bacterial cultures continued over 96 hours in the presence of gold-functionalized nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Au). At the 48-hour time point, growth of P. aeruginosa, as assessed by the number of colonies grown from treated samples, showed the highest inhibition (decreased by 40%). These data provide strong evidence that Fe3O4@Au can dramatically reduce growth of P. aeruginosa and provide a platform for further study of the antibacterial activity of this nanomaterial.Keywords: antibacterial activity, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, superparamagnetic nanoparticles, iron oxides, gold-coated nanoparticles

The influence of the surface modification on the magnetism of 4–14 nm sized core and core/shell gallium ferrites obtained by different preparation methods (Massart's and thermal decomposition from acetylacetonates) was studied. The physical properties of GaxFe3-xO4 were investigated in a wide range of Ga admixtures 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5. Ga ions location at 8a or/and 16d positions of a spinel structure depends on the synthesis method and has a pronounced effect on the superparamagnetic properties of nanoparticles. Magnetization and Mössbauer experiments show the dominant superparamagnetic contribution for the nanoparticles with x > 0.8 with the blocking temperature TB significantly below 200 K. Surface-modified nanoferrites disclosed spontaneous magnetization that does not exceed 60 emu/g. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anomalous deposition of multi-element nanowires continuously interests scientists to study such a system. In this paper, two types of magnetic nanowires were electrodeposited: multilayered and alloy-like. Fe-Co and Fe-Ni nanowires with various relative molar ratio were prepared by DC electrodeposition in aluminum oxide matrix, with a mean pore diameter of 140 ± 20 nm. The nanostructures were investigated in two states: released and within the matrix, using the following techniques: Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Infrared, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Scanning Electron Microscopy showed that the length of Fe-(Co, Ni) nanowires is of the order of 3 µm and the diameter determined by the pores of the anodic aluminum oxide templates. The X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy also showed that the fabrication method allows for the obtainment of both multilayered as well as alloyed nanowires with tunable magnetic properties which depend on both the elements' relative ratio and its ordering. The magnetic texture observed by Mössbauer measurements demonstrated the almost random distribution of magnetic moments of iron in the studied samples which are rather unusual in layered systems. We have succeeded in synthesizing orthorhombic Ga(1_X)Fe(1+X)03 (-0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.5), hexagonal GayFe(2-y)O3 (0 ≤ y ≤1.8) and cubic Ga(1+Z)Fe(2-Z)04 (--0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.8) nanograins of gallium ferrites using conventional precursors and an organic environment of Pechini scenario under atmosphericpressure conditions (SG method). Phase composition and homogeneity were analyzed using X-ray diffraction. Small angle neutron scattering disclosed ellipsoidal particle shapes of gallium iron oxides (GFO) crystallizing in orthorhombic (o-GFO) and hexagonal (h-GFO) symmetry and parallelepiped shapes of Ga(1+y)Fe(2-y)O4 (c-GFO) grains. Despite local agglomeration among the magnetic grains, the scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images point to faced-elliptical shapes. The Mössbauer spectroscopy with magnetization measurements was carried out in the temperature range of 5-295 K. The analysis of gallium ferrites magnetism demonstrates that iron atoms locate with various probabilities in crystallography positions and the spontaneous magnetization preserves up to room temperature (RT). The effects of the external magnetic field presence on the electrocrystallization of Fe/Ni alloy have been investigated. It is reported that the magnetic field superposed perpendicular to the electrode surface has an influence on the Fe/Ni alloy growth. It is found that the Fe content increases over the entire Fe/Ni solution deposition and the layer morphology strongly depends on the bath composition. The magnetic nanoparticles with core diameter 10 nm were modified by poly-L-lysine to bind antibody for cancer cell detection. Prepared biocompatible magnetic fluid (MFPLL) was characterized by dynamic light scattering method to obtain the particle size distribution. The microstructure of the MNPs and MFPLL samples were studied by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The magneto-optical properties of 14-nm CoAg core-shell nanoparticles ( x=0.7, 0.8, and 0.35) deposited on different substrates are investigated at room temperature in the photon-energy range from 0.8 to 4.8 eV. Particles with low Ag content show spectra very similar to pure Co nanoparticles while particles with high Ag content have totally different features, where the Ag plasma edge dominates the spectra. The spectral features of the polar Kerr rotation depend on particle composition. The ageing process and development of an oxide layer influence the particles' core-shell structures and magnetization curves. Co-rich particles exhibit lower resistance to the oxidation process as compared to Ag-rich ones. Abstract: The iron nanowires were obtained by DC electrochemical method in nanoporous anodic alumina templates (AAO). For stability tests these materials were placed in different solutions: white wine, citric acid, 0.9% NaCl, distilled water and ethanol for a 1–3week time period. The results of such treatment (solubility or possible changes on the surface) of the Fe nanowires were measured by IR (infrared spectroscopy), ASA (atomic absorption spectroscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) methods. Abstract: In the present study Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized by coprecipitation of Fe2+ and Fe3+ from chlorides. In the next step magnetite–gold core–shell nanoparticles were synthesized from HAuCl4 using an ethanol as a reducing agent. Finally, magnetic nanoparticles were functionalized by hexadecanethiol. The immobilization of biological molecules (trypsin and glucose oxidase) to the thiol-modified and unmodified magnetite–gold nanoparticles surface was tested. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, Mössbauer spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Magnetic nanowires of Fe, Fe-Co, and Fe-Ni alloy and layered structure were prepared by electrochemical alternating current (AC) deposition method. The morphology of the nanowires in and without the matrix was studied by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The wires either show strong dependence on the combination of elements deposition (alloy or layered) or chemical composition (Co or Ni). The magnetic properties of the nanostructures were determined on the basis of Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS).

The hyperfine fields and atomic ordering in Ni1−xFexMnGe (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys were investigated using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature. The X-ray diffraction measurements show that the samples with x = 0.2, 0.3 crystallized in the hexagonal Ni2In-type of structure, whereas in the sample with x = 0.1, the coexistence of two phases, Ni2In- and orthorhombic TiNiSi-type of structures, were found. The Mössbauer spectra measured with x = 0.2, 0.3 show three doublets with different values of isomer shift (IS) and quadrupole splitting (QS) related to three different local surroundings of Fe atoms in the hexagonal Ni2In-type structure. It was shown that Fe atoms in the hexagonal Ni2In-type structure of as-cast Ni1−xFexMnGe alloys are preferentially located in Ni sites and small amount of Fe is located in Mn and probably in Ge sites. The spectrum for x = 0.1 shows the doublets in the central part of spectrum and a broad sextet. The doublets originate from the Fe atoms in the paramagnetic state of hexagonal Ni2In-type structure, whereas the sextet results from the Fe atoms in orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure.

The ferrite magnetic nanoparticles with core-shell structures were obtained in two step preparation process. The Mössbauer spectra obtained for particles of pure maghemite or magnetite and two layered core-shell one the magnetite on maghemite and maghemite on magnetite are very different from each other. The presented results show that interparticle and intraparticle interaction plays important role in overall magnetic properties as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The studies presented in this paper show the results of synthesis and physicochemical characterization of modified ferrite nanoparticles, which can be described by the general formula M x Fe 3-x O 4 (where x = 0.15 or 0.45) doped with Al3+, Cr3+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions. The nanoparticles were obtained through procedures using either water or organic environment. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of synthetic routine and doping on the quality of the obtained structure, morphology and magnetic properties of nanoparticles. Additionally, doping concentration of selected elements is a crucial influence on the crystallinity and magnetic properties of the obtained nanoparticles. Doped nanoparticles were synthesized by two chemical methods: co-precipitation of iron chlorides in a basic solution and thermal decomposition of iron(III) acetylacetonate in an organic high-boiling solvent. Obtained nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, porosimetry, infrared spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetite and gallium substituted cuboferrites with a composition of Ga x Fe 3-x O 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.4) were fabricated by thermal decomposition from acetylacetonate salts. The effect of Ga 3+ cation substitution on the structural and thermomagnetic behavior of 4-12 nm sized core-shell particles was explored by X-ray and neutron diffraction, small angle neutron scattering, transmission electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and calorimetric measurements. Superparamagnetic (SPM) behavior and thermal capacity against increasing gallium concentration in nanoferrites were revealed. The highest heat capacity typical for Fe 3 O 4 @Ga 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 and Ga 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 is accompanied by a slight stimulation of fibroblast culture growth and inhibition of HeLa cell growth. The observed effect is concentration dependent in the range of 0.01-0.1 mg/mL and particles of Ga 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 design have a greater effect on cells. Observed magnetic heat properties, as well as interactions with tumor and healthy cells, provide a basis for further biomedical research to use the proposed nanoparticle systems in cancer thermotherapy (magnetic hyperthermia).

This study investigated the methods of preparation of zinc oxide-polypropylene nanocomposites and their antibacterial properties. Seven solutions with ZnO nanoparticles or zinc ions were formulated as a PP additive. Two methods of ZnO NPs syntheses were carried out: (1) a modified hydrothermal method where a water solution of zinc acetate dihydrate, PEI, and ammonia were mixed with a final pH 11; (2) a thermal decomposition of a water solution of zinc acetate in the presence of PEI and ammonia using a two-screw extruder. During the experiments, the influence of various amounts of particle stabilizer, heating of the solutions, and the temperatures of the syntheses were examined. As a result, the simultaneous crystallization of ZnO in the extrusion process confirmed this method's attractiveness from the application point of view. Fabricated PP-ZnO composite shows antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , and Klebsiella pneumoniae .

The aim of the study is an ecotoxicological assessment of magnetite iron oxide-based nanoparticles (NPs), which have risen in popularity in the last decade, on selected terrestrial and aquatic organisms from various levels of the food chain. In the presented study various organisms, from both the terrestrial and aquatic environment, were used as targets for the assessment of NPs ecotoxicity. Plants (radish, oat), marine bacteria (A. fischeri) and crustacean (H. incongruens) were used to represent producers, decomposers, and consumers, respectively. It was found that examined NPs were harmful (to a different degree) to biota from three different trophic levels. Physicochemical characterization (size/morphology, crystallinity, composition, and magnetic properties) of the tested nanoparticles was performed by: transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Mossbauer spectroscopy, respectively. Phytotoxicity was evaluated according to the OECD 208 Guideline, while acute and chronic toxicity of NPs was conducted using bioassays employing bacteria and crustacea, respectively. The phytotoxicity of all investigated iron oxide-based NPs was dependent on concentration and type of NPs formulation and was measured via biomass, seed germination, root length, shoot height, and content of plant pigments. Increasing the concentration of NPs increased phytotoxicity and mortality of aquatic organisms. Ecotoxicity of iron oxide/silver was dependent on the size and content of silver. Magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) is in the spotlight of nanomedical research for the treatment of cancer employing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and their intrinsic capability for heat dissipation under an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Herein we focus on the synthesis of iron oxide nanoflowers (Nfs) of different sizes (15 and 35 nm) and coatings (bare, citrate, and Rhodamine B) while comparing their physicochemical and magnetothermal properties. We encapsulated colloidally stable citrate coated Nfs, of both sizes, in thermosensitive liposomes via extrusion, and RhB was loaded in the lipid bilayer. All formulations proved hemocompatible and cytocompatible. We found that 35 nm Nfs, at lower concentrations than 15 nm Nfs, served better as nanoheaters for magnetic hyperthermia applications. In vitro, magnetic hyperthermia results showed promising therapeutic and imaging potential for RhB loaded magnetoliposomes containing 35 nm Nfs against LLC and CULA cell lines of lung adenocarcinoma., (© 2022. This paper refers to research based on tests completed on the adsorption of heavy metal ions (Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ ) from selected natural liquid samples such as apple, tomato, and potato juices using surface-functionalized Mn ferrite nanoparticles (Mn 0.2 Fe 2.8 O 4 ). To determine the most efficient adsorption conditions of these heavy metals, the nanoparticles' surfaces were modified with five different ligands (phthalic anhydride, succinic anhydride, acetic anhydride, 3-phosphonopropionic acid, and 16-phosphonohexadecanoic acid). To evaluate the success of the adsorption process, the resultant liquid samples were examined for the amount of residuals using the flame atomic absorption spectroscopy method. The Mn ferrite particles selected for these tests were first characterized physicochemically by the following methods: transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy.

In the presented paper, studies of magnetite nanoparticle stability in selected environmental solutions are reported. The durability tests were performed in four types of liquids: treated and untreated wastewater, river water, and commercial milk (0.5% fat). Nanoparticles before and after deposition in the testing conditions were measured by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The amount of Fe atoms transferred into the solutions was estimated on the basis of flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The analysis of the obtained results shows good stability of the tested nanoparticles in all water solutions. They do not change their structure or magnetic properties significantly, which makes them a good candidate to be used as, for example, detectors of specific compounds or heavy metals. On the other hand, studies show that particles are stable in environmental conditions for a long period of time in an unchanged form, which can cause their accumulation; therefore, they may be hazardous to living organisms.

Over the past few decades nanotechnology has paved its way into cancer treatment procedures with the use of nanoparticles (NPs) for contrast media and therapeutic agents. Iron based NPs are the most investigated since they can be used for drug delivery, imaging and when magnetically activate employed as local heat sources in cancer hyperthermia. In this work, was performed synthesis, characterization and biological evaluation of different types of iron oxide nanoparticles (mNPs'), as promising material for tumor hyperthermia. The surface of mNPs' has modified with inorganic stabilizing agents to particularly improve characteristics such as their magnetic properties, colloidal stability and biocompatibility. The successful coating of mNPs' was confirmed by morphological and structural characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FT-IR), while their hydrodynamic diameter was studied by using Dynamic light scattering (DLS). X-ray Diffraction (XRD) proved that the crystallite phase of mNPs' is the same with the pattern of magnetite. Superparamagnetic behavior and mNPs' response under the application of alternating magnetic field (AMF) were also thoroughly investigated and showed good heating efficiency in magnetic hyperthermia experiments. The contrast ability in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is also discussed indicating that mNPs are negative MRI contrast types. Nonetheless the effects of mNPs on cell viability was performed by MTT on human keratinocytes, human embryonic kidney cells, endothelial cells and by hemolytic assay on erythrocytes. In healthy keratinocytes wound healing assay in different time intervals was performed, assessing both the cell migration and wound closure. Endothelial cells have also been studied in functional activity performing capillary morphogenesis. In this paper, a series of experiments are reported where ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized with different substitution percentages (5, 10, 15, or 20%) of Fe 2+ by Co 2+ , Mn 2+ , or Ni 2+ ions. Afterwards, the prepared nanoparticles were thermally treated between 50 and 500 °C in air for 24 h in order to observe how doping influences the oxidation process induced by temperature elevation and access to O 2 . Nanoparticles were imaged before and after thermal treatment by transmission electron microscopy and were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Presented studies reveal that the amount and kind of doped transition metals (of replaced Fe 2+ ) strongly affect the oxidation process of ferrite nanoparticles, which can govern the application possibility. Each transition element suppresses the oxidation process in comparison to pure Fe-oxides, with the highest impact seen with Ni 2+ .
