Abstract

This article discusses the prenatal diagnosis and outcomes of meso/dextrocardia, a cardiac axis abnormality. The study reviewed 29 cases of fetal meso/dextrocardia diagnosed in a single hospital between January 2014 and February 2024. The results showed that there were eight cases of mesocardia and 21 cases of dextrocardia, with different complications associated with each. The study emphasizes the importance of evaluating the entire fetal body for anomalies when meso/dextrocardia is detected. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

A study of the possible solutions to the problem of 'single strand stability' in multistrand superconducting cables is presented. A proposed change in the design of the cable, aimed at improving its stability in relation to the quench of a single strand, is evaluated. This is accomplished by testing a number of multistrand superconducting cables manufactured from insulated superconducting strands that utilizes varying cabling techniques.

Abstract

The design and fabrication of a 1T cryocooler-cooled pulse coil operating at 40 K are described. To realize a uniform current distribution and to lessen the alternating current loss density down to the level of a single strand, a 4-strand interlayer-transposed parallel conductor composed of Bi2223 rectangular cross-sectional multifilamentary wires was adopted. Results indicate that the highest temperature of the coil was 40.5 K and the difference in temperature inside the winding was about 2 K.

Abstract

Research was conducted to evaluate a high temperature superconducting (HTS) cooling model coil for superconducting magnet energy storage. The objective was to make a HTS coil that is cooled to 40 K by a single-stage cryocooler and continuously operated at 1 Hz with a field amplitude of 1 T. The cooling model coil system was made to examine the effective arrangement of the heat drains. Results indicate that the HTS coil temperature is 43 K level when the alternating current losses are about 7 W and the temperature difference between HTS conductor and AIN plate is estimated to be 0.2 K.

Abstract

Conductor configuration and characteristics of superconducting cable for 50Hz a.c. use are reported. We developed a.c. conductors aiming low loss kA class current capacity. In consideration of reducing the current degradation by cabling, structures suitable for a.c. conductor are designed. In these conductors, low loss a.c. superconducting wires with very fine NbTi filaments are stranded around central cable of Cu-Ni or stainless steel wires for equal cooling condition, equal current distribution and mechanical reinforcing. Characteristics of small coils with these conductor at 50Hz a.c. load are tested and reported.

Abstract

Stabilities of magnets in a high gravitational field up to 2000 G are discussed, based upon the experimental results of forced quench tests in a set of rotating magnets, in order to establish the stability design criterion of field windings of superconducting generators. Relations of propagation velocities, recovery currents, minimum quench energy and heat transfer characteristics are studied, a good agreement between the experimental results and a theory confirmed the improvement of magnet stability in a high gravitational field because of the enhanced heat transfer characteristics.

Abstract

Liquid Ni-Ti alloys were processed in a containerless way using the technique of electromagnetic levitation in order to determine their densities. An improved optical method was utilized where, in addition to recording shadowgraph images from the side, a second camera recorded images of the sample from the top. A correction factor for the density was calculated from the top-view images. This method yields measurements insensitive to droplet rotation and static deformation which removes the need to assume axial symmetry. The measured densities are discussed in terms of the molar volume. A negative molar excess volume was obtained, indicating that Ni-Ti is a highly non-ideal system. These measurements were then used to test a recently proposed relationship between the molar excess volume, the excess free energy, and the isothermal compressibility. For the first time, the excess volume of a binary alloy, i.e., Ni-Ti, is adequately predicted by a thermodynamic model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

MgB2 superconducting thin wires sheathed with stainless steel (SS) have been prepared by in-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) process. Using Magnesium hydride MgH2 and amorphous B powders, SS sheathed MgB2 thin wires have been fabricated through drawing to form the round wires of 0.20 mm \sim0.10 mm in diameter. The SS sheath of 0.1 mm in diameter was hardened to be a Vickers hardness of around 600 HV through cold-working at room temperature without annealing. The heat treatment was performed at 630^\circC for 5 h in Ar gas atmosphere. The SS sheath recovered the hardness of 400 HV after heat treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Abstract: The new structure of MgB2 monofilamentary wires for stator windings of fully superconducting motors is proposed to reduce their AC losses in iron core slots for the application of an alternating transport current. In order to validate the proposed structure of wire for loss reduction, numerical calculations are carried out by means of a finite element method using edge elements formulated with a self-field due to currents induced in an analysis region. It is assumed that the voltage–current characteristics of the MgB2 superconductor are given by Bean’s critical state model, in which the critical current density is independent of the local magnetic field. The influences of wire structures on the AC losses are discussed quantitatively toward the optimum design of stator windings in fully superconducting motors with the MgB2 wires. Abstract

Two large integral multiple alloy rotor (MAR) forgings have been successfully produced to provide an alternative to welded rotor construction for advanced turbine applications. Each single piece forging comprises a CrMoV steel intermediate pressure (IP) section and a NiCrMoV low pressure (LP) section. Special production techniques, tooling, and control methods were developed to optimize the manufacture of multi-alloy electrodes, electroslag remelting (ESR), forging, differential heat treatment and inspection. This helped attain accurate control of the chemical transition zone location, width and symmetry and lead to achievement of all mechanical properties, inspection goals and thermal stability requirement. The frequency dependence of AC magnetization in stacked Bi-2223 Ag-sheathed tapes is experimentally and numerically evaluated in an external magnetic field perpendicular to their wide faces. The sample consists of 10 pieces of non-twisted Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes, which are vertically stacked. The magnetization in the external AC field, whose frequency is varied from 1 to 60 Hz, is measured with a saddle-shaped pickup coil. The measured AC magnetization is compared not only with the theoretical curves based on the critical state model but also with the numerically calculated losses which are derived using the voltage–current characteristics represented by the n-value model, where the local electric field is proportional to the power n of local current density. Furthermore, it is shown that the eddy-current losses in a silver matrix cannot be ignored in the perpendicular-field losses at a commercial frequency. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
