Objective Examining pain-related activity patterns in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) will help to establish appropriate rehabilitation programs in this patient population. The aim of this study is to compare symptoms, pain intensity, fear of movement, anxiety, depression status and physical activities according to pain-related activity patterns in patients with knee OA. Material and Method 120 participants with clinical and radiological knee OA were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants with knee OA were divided into three groups according to the Pain-Activity Patterns Scale: avoidance pattern, overdoing pattern, and regulation pattern. Visual Analogue Scale for assessing the severity of pain of participants with knee OA, KOOS (Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score) for assessing knee functions and knee-related quality of life, International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-Short) for assessing physical activity level, fear of falling the TAMPA kinesiophobia scale and the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HAD) for anxiety and depression were used. Results In our study, participants with knee OA were divided into three groups according to pain, and all subgroups of pain duration, pain severity (rest-activity), and KOOS scores were found to be similar to each other (p>0.05). HAD-anxiety and depression states, TAMPA scores and IPAQ-Walking scores were found to be different between the groups (p<0.05). It was found that patients with exaggeration pattern had higher anxiety than other groups (p<0.05), patients with avoidance pattern had higher depression (p<0.05) and fear of falling (p<0.05), and patients with regulation pattern had lower walking scores (p<0.05). Conclusion According to our study, it is seen that the level of depression and anxiety is lower in ordering behavior and it is associated with positive psychosocial outcomes. However, it is seen that the level of physical activity is the lowest in patients with knee OA who exhibit regulation behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Activities and participation play important roles in the maintenance of healthy aging. The maintenance of these factors optimizes social life to increase the quality of life with aging. However, there is a lack of questionnaires in Turkish to evaluate activity and participation among older people. This study translated and cross-culturally adapted the Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire (Ox-PAQ) into Turkish and investigated its psychometric properties in the older adult population. Methods: The Turkish version of the Ox-PAQ was produced after a translation and back-translation process. The Ox-PAQ was administered to 230 and 60 individuals for construct validity and reliability analyses, respectively. To assess the test-retest reliability of the Turkish Ox-PAQ, the questionnaire was reapplied 7 days after the first interview. Cronbach's alpha (α) was used to evaluate the internal consistency. The Ox-PAQ was compared to the Short Form-12 and the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living Scale to determine its validity. Results: The Turkish Ox-PAQ showed excellent internal consistency (a=0.98) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient=0.98, 0.96, and 0.97 for the subscales of routine activity level, social engagement, and emotional well-being, respectively). In the validity analysis, factor analysis demonstrated a probable structure of the three factors that together explained 66.35% of the total variance. The Turkish Ox-PAQ was correlated with the other comparison measures used in this study. Conclusion: The Turkish Ox-PAQ is a reliable and valid questionnaire to evaluate the participation and activity levels of older people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective The foot and ankle profile change the mechanical alignment and dynamic function of the lower limbs, especially the knee joint mechanics. Identifying changes in foot and ankle postures is very important in terms of treatment approaches in patients with different degrees of knee osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to assess the changes and effects on the foot and ankle profile of patients with different grades of medial compartment knee OA as a Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L). Materials and Methods All patients included in this cross-sectional study were divided into four groups for medial compartment OA severity by using the K-L grading system of knee OA on weight bearing lateral and anterior-posterior knee radiographies. The Western Ontario and Mc Master University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) questionnaire was performed to assess the pain and the functional status of the patients. Structural foot profile was assessed by the Foot Posture Index (FPI) system and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Ankle--Hindfoot and Midfoot scales. Also, the severity of foot pain of the patients was evaluated with a visual analogue scale and foot-specific health related quality of life of the patients was measured using the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOFQ). Results The study included 112 patients with mean age 57.12±12.2 years. In terms of severity of knee OA groups; percentages for grade 0-1, 2, 3 and 4 were 24%, 24%, 29%, 23% respectively. According to assessment of patients' the Foot Posture Index used in foot assessment of patients 18.4% were evaluated in supination, 42.5% in neutral and 39.1% in pronation, respectively. Besides, foot pronation was also increased as the severity of osteoarthritis increased (p<0.005). In the grade 0-1 and grade 2; AOFAS hindfoot, midfoot scores and foot pain were higher while MOXFQ scores were lower compered to severe OA (grade 3 and 4) (p<0.001). Conclusion The study indicates that differences of the severity of OA have effects on the foot and ankle profile in different degrees. Therefore, it is clinically important a comprehensive assessment of the foot-ankle should be made in determining the risk factors and appropriate treatment approaches for disease progression.
