ABSTRACT Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease which is categorized via destruction of joint cartilage and it also affects the various joints, especially knees and hips. Sinomenine active phytoconstituents isolated from the stem of Sinomenium acutum and already proof anti-inflammatory effect against the arthritis model of rodent. In this experimental protocol, we scrutinized the anti-osteoarthritis effect of sinomenine against monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) induced OA in rats. Methods: MIA (3 mg/50 μL) was used for inducing the OA in the rats, and rats received the oral administration of sinomenine (2.5, 5 and 7.5 mg/kg body weight) up to the end of the experimental study (four weeks). The body and organs weight were estimated. Aggrecan, C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II), glycosaminoglycans (GCGs), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), Interferon gamma (IFN-γ), antioxidant, inflammatory cytokines, inflammatory mediators and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) were analyzed. Results: Sinomenine significantly (P < 0.001) boosted the body weight and reduced the heart weight, but the weight of spleen and kidney remain unchanged. Sinomenine significantly (P < 0.001) reduced the level of nitric oxide, MCP-1 and improved the level of aggrecan, IFN-γ and GCGs. Sinomenine remarkably upregulated the level of glutathione, superoxide dismutase and suppressed the level of malonaldehyde. It effectually modulated the level of inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory mediators and significantly (P < 0.001) reduced the level of MMPs, like MMP-1, 2, 3, 9 and 13. Conclusions: Sinomenine is a beneficial active agent for the treatment of OA disease.

Objective: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic idiopathic inflammatory disease that includes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. Existing literature suggests that HBOT may be an effective therapy for IBD, but a quantitative analysis is lacking. This study aims to estimate the adjunctive role of HBOT in treating IBD and lowering its recurrence rate. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Wanfang databases were systematically searched by two reviewers independently. Meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager (RevMan, version 5.3). A random-effects model was applied due to the heterogeneity between studies. Results: Twenty-nine out of the initially identified 606 articles were covered in this review, with a total of 2151 patients (2071 for UC and 80 for CD). No randomized data of HBOT for CD were included. Among UC patients, usual care plus HBOT were more likely to achieve a clinical response than usual care alone (risk ratio [RR], 1.24; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.17 to 1.31; P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that the number of HBOT sessions had no statistically significant effect on overall efficacy (P > 0.05). The pooled data showed a lower recurrence rate in the usual care plus HBOT group (RR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.53; P < 0.001). The standardized mean difference in the serum tumor necrosis factor level between HBOT and non-HBOT groups was -2.13 (95% CI, -3.09 to -1.18; P < 0.001). No severe adverse events of HBOT were observed. Conclusions: HBOT might be an effective and safe adjunctive treatment for IBD. Further studies are required to investigate the optimal protocol of HBOT in IBD treatment.

By adjusting the frequency of the cavity, we perform a microwave reflection measurement and directly probe the coherence and interference effects in a phase-sensitive Josephson parametric amplifier. We demonstrate the shift in the peak and the dip in the reflection spectra of the amplifier, which operates in the phase-sensitive mode. The behavior of the shift can be precisely controlled by tuning the pump power, the frequency of the cavity, and the relative phase between the incident signal and pump field. Theoretical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results. These results provide an alternative way of controlling the parametric process by adjusting the frequency of the cavity.

We fabricate a microscale electromechanical system, in which a suspended superconducting membrane, treated as a mechanical oscillator, capacitively couples to a superconducting microwave resonator. As the microwave driving power increases, nonmonotonic dependence of the resonance frequency of the mechanical oscillator on the driving power has been observed. We also demonstrate the optical switching of the resonance frequency of the mechanical oscillator. Theoretical models for qualitative understanding of our experimental observations are presented. Our experiment may pave the way for the application of a mechanical oscillator with its resonance frequency controlled by the electromagnetic and/or optical fields, such as a microwave-optical interface and a controllable element in a superqubit-mechanical oscillator hybrid system.

Using the diluted S1813 UV photoresist as a sacrificial layer, we successfully fabricate a superconducting suspended parallel-plate capacitor, in which the top layer of aluminum film acts as a membrane mechanical resonator. Together with a superconducting octagonal spiral inductor, this parallel-plate capacitor constitutes a superconducting microwave resonator. At mK temperature, the transmission characteristic and spectrum of the microwave resonator are measured. Sideband frequencies caused by the vibration of the membrane mechanical resonator are clearly demonstrated. By down-converting with a mixer, the dependence of fundamental frequency and its harmonics on the input microwave power are clearly demonstrated, which is consistent with the numerical simulation.
