Abstract We examine key aspects of the theory of the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, focusing on the temperature dependence of the chemical potential, μ. We identify an accurate method of determining the change of μ in the cuprate high temperature superconductors from angle-resolved-photoemission data (along the ‘nodal’ direction), and show that μ varies by less than a few percent of the Fermi energy over a range of temperatures from far below to several times above the superconducting transition temperature, T c . This shows, unambiguously, that not only are these materials always on the BCS side of the crossover (which is a phase transition in the d-wave case), but are nowhere near the point of the crossover (where the chemical potential approaches the band bottom).

Superconductivity reported in metals driven away from equilibrium via optical pumping has been proposed to arise from nonlinear coupling between electrons and optically excited phonons. The authors use an exact approach to show that here, disorder, which disfavors superconductivity, emerges even though the system is translationally invariant.

We consider the quench of an atomic impurity via a single Rydberg excitation in a degenerate Fermi gas. The Rydberg interaction with the background gas particles induces an ultralong-range potential that binds particles to form dimers, trimers, tetramers, etc. Such oligomeric molecules were recently observed in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Understanding the effects of a correlated background on molecule formation, absent in bosonic baths, is crucial to explain ongoing experiments with Fermi gases. In this work we demonstrate with a functional determinant approach that quantum statistics and fluctuations have clear observable consequences. We show that the occupation of molecular states is predicated on the Fermi statistics, which suppresses molecular formation in an emergent molecular shell structure. At high gas densities this leads to spectral narrowing, which can serve as a probe of the quantum gas thermodynamic properties. Rydberg excitations in Fermi gases go beyond traditional impurity problems, creating an opportunity for studies of mesoscopic interactions in synthetic quantum matter.

The exploration of large-scale many-body phenomena in quantum materials has produced many important experimental discoveries, including novel states of entanglement, topology and quantum order as found for example in quantum spin ices, topological insulators and semimetals, complex magnets, and high- T _c superconductors. Yet, the sheer scale of solid-state systems and the difficulty of exercising exacting control of their quantum mechanical degrees of freedom limit the pace of rational progress in advancing the properties of these and other materials. With extraordinary effort to counteract natural processes of dissipation, precisely engineered ultracold quantum simulators could point the way to exotic new materials. Here, we look instead to the quantum mechanical character of the arrested state formed by a quenched ultracold molecular plasma. This novel class of system arises spontaneously, without a deliberate engineering of interactions, and evolves naturally from state-specified initial conditions, to a long-lived final state of canonical density, in a process that conflicts with classical notions of plasma dissipation and neutral dissociation. We take information from experimental observations to develop a conceptual argument that attempts to explain this state of arrested relaxation in terms of a minimal phenomenological model of randomly interacting dipoles of random energies. This model of the plasma forms a starting point to describe its observed absence of relaxation in terms of many-body localization (MBL). The large number of accessible Rydberg and excitonic states gives rise to an unconventional web of many-body interactions that vastly exceeds the complexity of MBL in a conventional few-level scheme. This experimental platform thus opens an avenue for the coupling of dipoles in disordered environments that will demand the development of new theoretical tools.

Photonic time crystals refer to materials whose dielectric properties are periodic in time, analogous to a photonic crystal whose dielectric properties is periodic in space. Here, we theoretically investigate photonic time-crystalline behaviour initiated by optical excitation above the electronic gap of the excitonic insulator candidate Ta2NiSe5. We show that after electron photoexcitation, electron-phonon coupling leads to an unconventional squeezed phonon state, characterised by periodic oscillations of phonon fluctuations. Squeezing oscillations lead to photonic time crystalline behaviour. The key signature of the photonic time crystalline behaviour is terahertz (THz) amplification of reflectivity in a narrow frequency band. The theory is supported by experimental results on Ta2NiSe5 where photoexcitation with short pulses leads to enhanced THz reflectivity with the predicted features. We explain the key mechanism leading to THz amplification in terms of a simplified electron-phonon Hamiltonian motivated by ab-initio DFT calculations. Our theory suggests that the pumped Ta2NiSe5 is a gain medium, demonstrating that squeezed phonon noise may be used to create THz amplifiers in THz communication applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perturbative considerations account for the properties of conventional metals, including the range of temperatures where the transport scattering rate is 1/τtr = 2π λ T, where λ is a dimensionless strength of the electron--phonon coupling. The fact that measured values satisfy λ ≲ 1 has been noted in the context of a possible "Planckian" bound on transport. However, since the electron--phonon scattering is quasielastic in this regime, no such Planckian considerations can be relevant. We present and analyze Monte Carlo results on the Holstein model which show that a different sort of bound is at play: a "stability" bound on λ consistent with metallic transport. We conjecture that a qualitatively similar bound on the strength of residual interactions, which is often stronger than Planckian, may apply to metals more generally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The non-equilibrium dynamics of matter excited by light may produce electronic phases, such as laser-induced high-transition-temperature superconductivity, that do not exist in equilibrium. Here we simulate the dynamics of a metal driven at initial time by a spatially uniform pump that excites dipole-active vibrational modes which couple nonlinearly to electrons. We provide evidence for rapid loss of spatial coherence, leading to emergent effective disorder in the dynamics, which arises in a system unitarily evolving under a translation-invariant Hamiltonian, and dominates the electronic behavior as the system evolves towards a correlated electron-phonon long-time state, possibly explaining why transient superconductivity is not observed. Our framework provides a basis within which to understand correlation dynamics in current pump-probe experiments of vibrationally coupled electrons, highlight the importance of the evolution of phase coherence, and demonstrate that pumped electron-phonon systems provide a means of realizing dynamically induced disorder in translation-invariant systems. Chefs are lauded in popular culture. Yet doubts regarding the quality of chefs' jobs have intensified in Australia following recent instances of underpayments in high-profile restaurants. This case study-based research examines the job quality of chefs in mid-level and premium restaurants. The findings allow for the development of empirical and theoretical contributions by revealing the prevalence of objectively 'bad' jobs and why they are tolerated subjectively. Recent theoretical research on tensor gauge theories led to the discovery of an exotic type of quasiparticles, dubbed fractons, that obey both charge and dipole conservation. Here we describe physical implementation of dipole conservation laws in realistic systems. We show that fractons find a natural realization in hole-doped antiferromagnets. There, individual holes are largely immobile, while dipolar hole pairs move with ease. First, we demonstrate a broad parametric regime of fracton behavior in hole-doped two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnets viable through five orders in perturbation theory. We then specialize to the case of holes confined to one dimension in an otherwise two-dimensional antiferromagnetic background, which can be realized via the application of external fields in experiments, and prove ideal fracton behavior. We explicitly map the model onto a fracton Hamiltonian featuring conservation of dipole moment. Manifestations of fractonicity in these systems include gravitational clustering of holes. We also discuss diagnostics of fracton behavior, which we argue is borne out in existing experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We show that Zeeman excitations of ultracold Dy atoms trapped in an optical lattice can be used to engineer extended Hubbard models with tunable inter-site and particle number-non-conserving interactions. We show that the ratio of the hopping amplitude and inter-site interactions in these lattice models can be tuned in a wide range by transferring the atoms to different Zeeman states. We propose to use the resulting controllable models for the study of the effects of direct particle interactions and particle number-non-conserving terms on Anderson localization. We consider the dynamics of rotational excitations placed on a single molecule in spatially disordered one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) ensembles of ultracold molecules trapped in optical lattices. The disorder arises from incomplete populations of optical lattices with molecules. This leads to a model corresponding to a quantum particle with long-range tunnelling amplitudes moving on a lattice with the same on-site energy but with forbidden access to random sites (vacancies). We examine the time and length scales of Anderson localization for this type of disorder with realistic experimental parameters in the Hamiltonian. We show that for an experimentally realized system of KRb molecules on an optical lattice this type of disorder leads to disorder-induced localization in 1D and 2D systems on a time scale s. For 3D lattices with 55 sites in each dimension and vacancy concentration 90%, the rotational excitations diffuse to the edges of the lattice and show no signature of Anderson localization. We examine the role of the long-range tunnelling amplitudes allowing for transfer of rotational excitations between distant lattice sites. Our results show that the long-range tunnelling has little impact on the dynamics in the diffusive regime but affects significantly the localization dynamics in lattices with large concentrations of vacancies, enhancing the width of the localized distributions in 2D lattices by more than a factor of 2.
