Oxidation of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) occurs readily under a variety of conditions. Therefore, understanding the oxidation processes is necessary for successful TMD handling and device fabrication. Here, we investigate atomic-scale oxidation mechanisms of the most widely studied TMD, MoS 2 . We find that thermal oxidation results in α-phase crystalline MoO 3 with sharp interfaces, voids, and crystallographic alignment with the underlying MoS 2 . Experiments with remote substrates prove that thermal oxidation proceeds via vapor-phase mass transport and redeposition, a challenge to forming thin, conformal films. Oxygen plasma accelerates the kinetics of oxidation relative to the kinetics of mass transport, forming smooth and conformal oxides. The resulting amorphous MoO 3 can be grown with subnanometer to several-nanometer thickness, and we calibrate the oxidation rate for different instruments and process parameters. Our results provide quantitative guidance for managing both the atomic scale structure and thin-film morphology of oxides in the design and processing of TMD devices.

Background: In clinical settings, tooth preparation for prefabricated zirconia crowns (PZCs) in the primary dentition varies widely. However, knowledge about the biomechanical behavior of PZCs in various clinical settings is limited. This study was conducted to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of PZCs in different clinical settings using 3-dimensional finite element analysis., Methods: 3-dimensional models of the PZC, cement, and tooth with six different conditions were simulated in primary molar teeth, incorporating cement thickness (100, 500, and 1000 μm) and cement type (resin-modified glass ionomer cement and resin cement). A total of 200 N of occlusal force was applied to the models, both vertically and obliquely as representative cases. A general linear model univariate analysis with partial eta-squared (ηp 2 ) was performed to evaluate the relative effects of the variables., Results: The overall stress of tooth was increased as the cement space increases under oblique loading. The von Mises stress values of the resin cements were significantly higher than those of the resin-modified glass ionomer cements for all cement thicknesses (p < .05). The effect size of the cement type (η p 2  = .519) was more dominant than the cement thickness (η p 2  = .132) in the cement layer., Conclusions: Within the limits of this study, cement type has a greater influence on the biomechanical behavior of PZCs than cement thickness., (© 2022. van der Waals (vdW) layered chalcogenides have strongly direction-dependent (i.e., anisotropic) properties that make them interesting for photonic and optoelectronic applications. Orthorhombic tin selenide (α-SnSe) is a triaxial vdW material with strong optical anisotropy within layer planes, which has motivated studies of optical phase and domain switching. As with every vdW material, controlling the orientation of crystal domains during growth is key to reliably making wafer-scale, high-quality thin films, free from twin boundaries. Here, we demonstrate a fast optical method to quantify domain orientation in SnSe thin films made by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The in-plane optical anisotropy results in white-light being reflected into distinct colors for certain optical polarization angles and the color depends on domain orientation. We use our method to confirm a high density of twin boundaries in SnSe epitaxial films on MgO substrates, with square symmetry that results in degeneracy between SnSe 90° domain orientations. We then demonstrate that growing on a-plane sapphire, with rectangular lattice-matched symmetry that breaks the SnSe domain degeneracy, results in single-crystalline films with one preferred orientation. Our SnSe bottom-up film synthesis by MBE enables future applications of this vdW material that is particularly difficult to process by top-down methods. Our optical metrology is fast and can apply to all triaxial vdW materials.

Background: Internal voids of materials can serve a hub for microorganism and affect the sealing ability. This study aimed to evaluate the sealing performance of calcium silicate-based cements in immature teeth treated with regenerative endodontics., Methods: Twenty single root canals from immature permanent premolars were prepared using regenerative endodontic protocols. The root canals were randomly divided into two groups and sealed with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine (BD). The teeth were kept in humid environment for 7 days and scanned using micro-computed tomography. The voids within the cements were segmented and visualized using image processing, incorporating the modified Otsu algorithm. The porosity of each sample was also calculated as the ratio between the number of voxels of voids and the volume of the cements. Tortuosity was also calculated using the A-star algorithm., Results: Voids larger than 70 μm were predominantly observed in the top and interfacial surface of cements. The others were evenly distributed. MTA and BD showed the same level of porosity and tortuosity at interfacial surfaces. In inner surfaces, MTA showed more less porosity and tortuosity compared to BD (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: There were no differences in sealing performance between MTA and BD., (© 2021. A thorough understanding of native oxides is essential for designing semiconductor devices. Here, we report a study of the rate and mechanisms of spontaneous oxidation of bulk single crystals of ZrS x Se 2- x alloys and MoS 2 . ZrS x Se 2- x alloys oxidize rapidly, and the oxidation rate increases with Se content. Oxidation of basal surfaces is initiated by favorable O 2 adsorption and proceeds by a mechanism of Zr-O bond switching, that collapses the van der Waals gaps, and is facilitated by progressive redox transitions of the chalcogen. The rate-limiting process is the formation and out-diffusion of SO 2 . In contrast, MoS 2 basal surfaces are stable due to unfavorable oxygen adsorption. Our results provide insight and quantitative guidance for designing and processing semiconductor devices based on ZrS x Se 2- x and MoS 2 and identify the atomistic-scale mechanisms of bonding and phase transformations in layered materials with competing anions.

Background: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) have increased levels of protein phosphatase magnesium-dependent 1A (PPM1A) and autoantibodies. We evaluated the usefulness of serum anti-PPM1A antibodies as a biomarker for AS., Methods: Serum samples from 58 AS patients were obtained from a multicenter registry prior to the initiation of anti-TNF agents. The serum levels of anti-PPM1A antibodies were measured using ELISA. Spinal radiographic progression was defined as an increase in the modified stoke ankylosing spondylitis spinal score (mSASSS) by ≥2 units or a newly developed syndesmophyte. The role of exogenous PPM1A on bone mineralization was evaluated using primary osteoprogenitors acquired from patients with AS and non-inflammatory controls., Results: The baseline levels of anti-PPM1A antibodies and mSASSS were higher in the radiographic progression group than in the non-progression group. In logistic regression analysis, baseline mSASSS and serum anti-PPM1A antibodies were associated with a higher risk of progression. The level of anti-PPM1A antibodies for predicting progression had an AUC of 0.716 (cut-off value: 43.77 ng/mL). PPM1A stimulation increased matrix mineralization in AS-osteoprogenitors but not in controls., Conclusion: Along with mSASSS, the serum levels of anti-PPM1A antibodies might be useful as a predictor of radiographic progression after treatment with anti-TNF agents.

This study analyzed the changes in particulate matter concentrations according to land-use over time and the spatial characteristics of the distribution of particulate matter concentrations using big data of particulate matter in Daejeon, Korea, measured by Private Air Quality Monitoring Smart Sensors (PAQMSSs). Land-uses were classified into residential, commercial, industrial, and green groups according to the primary land-use around the 650-m sensor radius. Data on particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <10 µm (PM10) and <2.5 µm (PM2.5) were captured by PAQMSSs from September‒October (i.e., fall) in 2019. Differences and variation characteristics of particulate matter concentrations between time periods and land-uses were analyzed and spatial mobility characteristics of the particulate matter concentrations over time were analyzed. The results indicate that the particulate matter concentrations in Daejeon decreased in the order of industrial, housing, commercial and green groups overall; however, the concentrations of the commercial group were higher than those of the residential group during 21:00-23:00, which reflected the vital nighttime lifestyle in the commercial group in Korea. Second, the green group showed the lowest particulate matter concentration and the industrial group showed the highest concentration. Third, the highest particulate matter concentrations were in urban areas where commercial and business functions were centered and in the vicinity of industrial complexes. Finally, over time, the PM10 concentrations were clearly high at noon and low at night, whereas the PM2.5 concentrations were similar at certain areas.

We previously showed that the first intron of genes exhibits several interesting characteristics not seen in other introns: 1) it is the longest intron on average in almost all eukaryotes, 2) it presents the highest number of conserved sites, and 3) it exhibits the highest density of regulatory chromatin marks. Here, we expand on our previous study by integrating various multiomics data, leading to further evidence supporting the functionality of sites in the first intron. We first show that trait-associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (TASs) are significantly enriched in the first intron. We also show that within the first intron, the density of epigenetic chromatin signals is higher near TASs than in distant regions. Furthermore, the distribution of several chromatin regulatory marks is investigated in relation to gene expression specificity (i.e., housekeeping vs. tissue-specific expression), essentiality (essential genes vs. nonessential genes), and levels of gene expression; housekeeping genes or essential genes contain greater proportions of active chromatin marks than tissue-specific genes or nonessential genes, and highly expressed genes exhibit a greater density of chromatin regulatory marks than genes with low expression. Moreover, we observe that genes carrying multiple first-intron TASs interact with each other within a large protein-protein interaction network, ultimately connecting to the UBC protein, a well-established protein involved in ubiquitination. In previous studies, we demonstrated that some sites in the first intron likely regulate gene expression. In the present work, we sought to further confirm the functional relevance of first intron sites by estimating the quantity of rare alleles in the first intron. A basic hypothesis posited herein is that genomic regions carrying more functionally important sites will have a higher proportion of rare alleles. We estimated the proportions of rare single nucleotide polymorphisms with a minor allele frequency < 0.01 located in several histone marks in the first introns of various genes, and compared them with those in other introns and those in 2-kb upstream regions. As expected, rare alleles were found to be significantly enriched in most of the regulatory sites located in the first introns. Meanwhile, transcription factor binding sites were significantly more enriched in the 2-kb upstream regions (i.e., the regions of putative promoters of genes) than in the first introns. These results strongly support our proposal that the first intron sites of genes may have important regulatory functions in gene expression independent of promoters.

Radiation therapy for variety of human solid tumors utilizes mechanism of cell death after DNA damage caused by radiation. In response to DNA damage, cytochrome c was released from mitochondria by activation of pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins, and then elicits massive Ca(2+) release from the ER that lead to cell death. It was also suggested that irradiation may cause the deregulation of Ca(2+) homeostasis and trigger programmed cell death and regulate death specific enzymes. Thus, in this study, we investigated how cellular Ca(2+) metabolism in RKO cells, in comparison to radiation-resistant A549 cells, was altered by gamma (γ)-irradiation. In irradiated RKO cells, Ca(2+) influx via activation of NCX reverse mode was enhanced and a decline of [Ca(2+)]i via forward mode was accelerated. The amount of Ca(2+) released from the ER in RKO cells by the activation of IP3 receptor was also enhanced by irradiation. An increase in [Ca(2+)]i via SOCI was enhanced in irradiated RKO cells, while that in A549 cells was depressed. These results suggest that γ-irradiation elicits enhancement of cellular Ca(2+) metabolism in radiation-sensitive RKO cells yielding programmed cell death.

Efficient room temperature NIR detection with sufficient current gain is made with a solution-processed networked SWNT FET. The high performance NIR-FET with significantly enhanced photocurrent by more than two orders of magnitude compared to dark current in the depleted state is attributed to multiple Schottky barriers in the network, each of which absorb NIR and effectively separate photocarriers to corresponding electrodes., (© 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Electroluminescent (EL) devices operating at alternating current (AC) electricity have been of great interest due to not only their unique light emitting mechanism of carrier generation and recombination but also their great potential for applications in displays, sensors, and lighting. Despite great success of AC-EL devices, most device properties are far from real implementation. In particular, the current state-of-the art brightness of the solution-processed AC-EL devices is a few hundred candela per square meter (cd m(-2)) and most of the works have been devoted to red and white emission. In this manuscript, we report extremely bright full color polymer AC-EL devices with brightness of approximately 2300, 6000, and 5000 cd m(-2) for blue (B), green (G), and red (R) emission, respectively. The high brightness of blue emission was attributed to individually networked multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) for the facile carrier injection as well as self-assembled block copolymer micelles for suppression of interchain nonradiative energy quenching. In addition, effective FRET from a solution-blended thin film of B-G and B-G-R fluorescent polymers led to very bright green and red EL under AC voltage, respectively. The solution-processed AC-EL device also worked properly with vacuum-free Ag paste on a mechanically flexible polymer substrate. Finally, we successfully demonstrated the long-term operation reliability of our AC-EL device for over 15 h.

A sensitive and rapid electrochemical microchip fabricated by assembling a surface-functionalized poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microchannel with an interdigitated array (IDA) gold electrode was developed for the detection of human cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in the early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. Anti-cTnI was immobilized onto the internal surface of the PDMS channel on which protein G layer had been generated by silanization. To reduce electrode fouling, a PDMS channel was assembled with an IDA chip after surface treatment. The detection experiments were performed with successive injection of cTnI, alkaline phosphatase (AP)-labeled anti-cTnI, and p-aminophenylphosphate. Then, cyclic voltammograms were obtained by the oxidation peak current proportionally to the concentration of enzymatic product, p-aminophenol. The optimal packing density of anti-cTnI on the surface of the PDMS channel was determined at the anti-cTnI concentration of 30 microg/ml for the highest electrochemical signal. These demonstrate that the proper orientation and best packing density of antibody as well as no electrode fouling contributed to the low detection limit (148 pg/ml) of cTnI within 8 min.
