Solid-state ionic approaches for modifying ion distributions in getter/oxide heterostructures offer exciting potentials to control material properties. Here, we report a simple, scalable approach allowing for manipulation of the superconducting transition in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) films via a chemically driven ionic migration mechanism. Using a thin Gd capping layer of up to 20 nm deposited onto 100 nm thick epitaxial YBCO films, oxygen is found to leach from deep within the YBCO. Progressive reduction of the superconducting transition is observed, with complete suppression possible for a sufficiently thick Gd layer. These effects arise from the combined impact of redox-driven electron doping and modification of the YBCO microstructure due to oxygen migration and depletion. This work demonstrates an effective step toward total ionic tuning of superconductivity in oxides, an interface-induced effect that goes well into the quasi-bulk regime, opening-up possibilities for electric field manipulation.

We report the results of high-pressure X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, and electrical transport measurements of the Kondo insulator (KI) Ce3Bi4Pt3 up to 42 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the study of any Ce-based KI. We observe a smooth decrease in volume and movement toward intermediate Ce valence with pressure, both of which point to increased electron correlations. Despite this, temperature-dependent resistance data show the suppression of the interaction-driven ambient pressure insulating ground state. We also discuss potential ramifications of these results for the predicted topological KI state.

We report a comprehensive study of Sperrylite (PtAs2), the main platinum source in natural minerals, as a function of applied pressures up to 150 GPa. While no structural phase transition is detected from pressure-dependent X-ray measurements, the unit cell volume shrinks monotonically with pressure following the third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. The mildly semiconducting behavior found in pure synthesized crystals at ambient pressures becomes more insulating upon increasing the applied pressure before metalizing at higher pressures, giving way to the appearance of an abrupt decrease in resistance near 3 K at pressures above 92 GPa consistent with the onset of a superconducing phase. The pressure evolution of the calculated electronic band structure reveals the same physical trend as our transport measurements, with a non-monotonic evolution explained by a hole band that is pushed below the Fermi energy and an electron band that approaches it as a function of pressure, both reaching a touching point suggestive of an excitonic state. A Lifshitz transition of the electronic structure and an increase in the density of states may naturally explain the onset of superconductivity in this material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy was used to determine the pressure dependence of the f-electron occupancy in the Kondo insulator SmB_{6}. Applied pressure reduces the f occupancy, but surprisingly, the material maintains a significant divalent character up to a pressure of at least 35 GPa. Thus, the closure of the resistive activation energy gap and onset of magnetic order are not driven by stabilization of an integer valent state. Over the entire pressure range, the material maintains a remarkably stable intermediate valence that can in principle support a nontrivial band structure.

The liquid metal jetting droplet-on-demand technology provides many potential benefits to metal additive manufacturing. However, much is left to understand the operational margins to reliably create stable, satellite-free droplets. We elucidate these margins by experimentally probing the unexplored extremities of a recently proposed printability window based on the jet Weber (Wejet) and Ohnesorge (Z = 1/Oh) numbers. We generated stable droplets for 2 ≲ Wejet ≲ 4 for all tested Z = 339 to 2526—well beyond the bounds of any previously published printability window—suggesting that additional physics may be needed to understand droplet-on-demand in the high Z regime. Droplet-on-demand liquid metal jetting is emerging as a powerful technology for the additive manufacturing of metallic parts. The success of this method hinges on overcoming several technological challenges. The principal one among these challenges is the controlled repeatable ejection of single uniform droplets. Due to the high density and surface tension of liquid metals, the droplet ejection process occurs near the minimal extremes of the printability phase diagram, defined by acceptable ranges for the Weber (We) and Ohnesorge (Oh) numbers. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the satellite-free ejection of pneumatically actuated molten tin droplets in this extreme corner of printability and use a combination of high-speed video analysis and volume-of-fluid modeling to elucidate the droplet dynamics. While the simulations at low Oh and We can correctly describe several aspects of the breakup process, such as an increasing tail and pinch-point near the nozzle, no single parameter set can completely capture the droplet shape at breakup. Instead, the experimental droplet dynamics appear to include features from both high and low Oh breakup. This disagreement is ascribed to the incomplete description of the droplet ejection process including wetting and exit effects near the nozzle opening and surface effects such as transient cooling and oxide formation. Liquid metals have long been treated as Newtonian liquids, but several researchers have recently indicated that some metals may shear thin. While apparent shear thinning can be caused by surface oxidation, the reports of shear-thinning metals were investigated using cup and bob type rheometers, which are expected to only be weakly impacted by the surface contamination effects. We show here that even small amounts of oxide on the surface of liquid metals can cause dramatic changes to the measured viscosity of the sample. Using a Searle-type rotational rheometer, we measured the viscosity of eutectic gallium indium and tin in a low-oxygen environment. When either metal is slightly oxidized, the measured viscosity increases by orders of magnitude and the liquid displays erroneous shear-thinning behavior. When the oxide is removed via an active flux, the measured viscosity is Newtonian. The results outlined here provide insight into the difficulties of measuring the viscosity of easily oxidized liquids and confirm that liquid metals are likely best described as Newtonian liquids at all measured shear rates. Recently, static pressures of more than 1.0 TPa have been reported, which raises the question: what is the maximum static pressure that can be achieved using diamond anvil cell techniques? Here we compile culet diameters, bevel diameters, bevel angles, and reported pressures from the literature. We fit these data and find an expression that describes the maximum pressure as a function of the culet diameter. An extrapolation of our fit reveals that a culet diameter of 1 μm should achieve a pressure of ∼1.8 TPa. Additionally, for pressure generation of ∼400 GPa with a single beveled diamond anvil, the most commonly reported parameters are a culet diameter of ∼20 μm, a bevel angle of 8.5°, and a bevel diameter to culet diameter ratio between 14 and 18. Our analysis shows that routinely generating pressures more than ∼300 GPa likely requires diamond anvil geometries that are fundamentally different from a beveled or double beveled anvil (e.g., toroidal or double stage anvils) and culet diameters that are ≤20 μm. We have performed high-pressure magnetotransport and x-ray diffraction measurements on ferromagnetic LaCo5, confirming the theoretically predicted electronic topological transition driving the magnetoelastic collapse seen in the related compound YCo5. Our x-ray diffraction results show an anisotropic lattice collapse of the c axis near 10 GPa that is also commensurate with a change in the majority charge carriers evident from high-pressure Hall effect measurements. The coupling of the electronic, magnetic, and lattice degrees of freedom is further substantiated by the evolution of the anomalous Hall effect, which couples to the magnetization of the ordered state of LaCo5. The material USb2 is a correlated, moderately heavy-electron compound within the uranium dipnictide (UX2) series. It is antiferromagnetic with a relatively high transition temperature TN = 204K and a large U-U separation. While the uranium atoms in the lighter dipnictides are considered to be localized, those of USb2 exhibit hybridization and itineracy, promoting uncertainty as to the continuity of the magnetic order within the UX2. We have explored the evolution of the magnetic order by employing magnetotransport measurements as a function of pressure and temperature. We find that the TN in USb2 is enhanced, moving towards that of its smaller sibling UAs2. But, long before reaching a TN as high as UAs2, the antiferromagnetism of USb2 is abruptly destroyed in favor of another magnetic ground state. We identify this pressure-induced ground state as being ferromagnetic based on the appearance of a strong anomalous Hall effect in the transverse resistance in magnetic field. With pressure, this emergent ferromagnetic state is suppressed and ultimately destroyed in favor of a non-Fermi-liquid ground state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We experimentally investigate the symmetry in the hidden order (HO) phase of intermetallic URu2Si2 by mapping the lattice and magnetic excitations via inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements in the HO and high-temperature paramagnetic phases. At all temperatures, the excitations respect the zone edges of the body-centered tetragonal paramagnetic phase, showing no signs of reduced spatial symmetry, even in the HO phase. The magnetic excitations originate from transitions between hybridized bands and track the Fermi surface, whose features are corroborated by the phonon measurements. Due to a large hybridization energy scale, a full uranium moment persists in the HO phase, consistent with a lack of observed crystal-field-split states. Our results are inconsistent with local order-parameter models and the behavior of typical density waves. We suggest that an order parameter that does not break spatial symmetry would naturally explain these characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] • HDH combined with spheroidization is a low-waste way to make U-6 wt.% Nb powder. • U-6 wt.% Nb powders made in this work have thin oxide layers, as thin as 5 nm. • U-6 wt.% Nb powders in this work show isotropic microstructures. In this work, we investigate the viability of the Hydride-Dehydride (HDH) process coupled with plasma spheroidization for producing U-6 wt.% Nb powders as an alternative method to atomization. The HDH process produces irregularly shaped powder with sub-micron U-Nb segregation and phase heterogeneity, and the subsequent spheroidization process re-homogenizes both the U-Nb composition and phase that is similar to atomized U-6 wt.% Nb powders. The surface oxide layer of the spheroidized powder is thinner than atomized U-6 wt.% Nb powders, ranging from 5 to 15 nm and display an isotropic microstructure, absent of large dendrites across the sphere as seen in atomized U-6 wt.% Nb. HDH also offers the advantage that oversized and undersized powders can be reprocessed. Combined, we demonstrate that HDH coupled with plasma spheroidization is a low-waste, alternative production route for spherical U-6 wt.% Nb powders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a high-pressure study of simultaneous low-temperature electrical resistivity and Hall effect measurements on high quality single-crystalline KFe2As2 using designer diamond anvil cell techniques with applied pressures up to 33 GPa. In the low-pressure regime, we show that the superconducting transition temperature Tc finds a maximum onset value of 7 K near 2 GPa, in contrast to previous reports that find a minimum Tc and reversal of pressure dependence at this pressure. Upon applying higher pressures, this Tc is diminished until a sudden drastic enhancement occurs coincident with a first-order structural phase transition into a collapsed tetragonal phase. The appearance of a distinct superconducting phase above 13 GPa is also accompanied by a sudden reversal of dominant charge carrier sign, from hole- to electron-like, which agrees with our band structure calculations predicting the emergence of an electron pocket and diminishment of hole pockets upon Fermi surface reconstruction. Our results suggest the high-temperature superconducting phase in KFe2As2 is substantially enhanced by the presence of nested electron and hole pockets, providing the key ingredient of high-Tc, superconductivity in iron pnictide superconductors. • First report of electrorefining plutonium in CaCl 2 at hundred-gram scale. • Efficiency and yield of the hundred-gram scale were comparable to full-scale. • Iron contamination in the feed and higher depletion of anode were observed. Molten salt extraction and electrorefining of plutonium were successfully conducted with only a 200-g initial charge. Due to this small scale, the electrorefining cell components were redesigned relative to conventional, multi-kg standards. The efficiency and yield of this small-scale process are comparable to those of larger-scale exemplars. Chemical analysis of the plutonium product and the anode heel is presented. Using high-pressure magnetotransport techniques we have discovered superconductivity in Bi2Te, a member of the infinitely adaptive (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n series, whose end members, Bi and Bi2Te3, can be tuned to display topological surface states or superconductivity. Bi2Te has a maximum Tc=8.6K at P=14.5GPa and goes through multiple high-pressure phase transitions, ultimately collapsing into a bcc structure that suggests a universal behavior across the series. High-pressure magnetoresistance and Hall measurements suggest a semimetal to metal transition near 5.4 GPa, which accompanies the hexagonal to intermediate phase transition seen via x-ray diffraction measurements. In addition, the linearity of Hc2(T) exceeds the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg limit, even in the extreme spin-orbit scattering limit, yet is consistent with other strong spin-orbit materials. Considering these results in combination with similar reports on strong spin-orbit scattering materials seen in the literature, we suggest the need for a new theory that can address the unconventional nature of their superconducting states. UI 4 (1,4-dioxane) 2 was subjected to laser-based heating─a method that enables localized, fast heating ( T > 2000 °C) and rapid cooling under controlled conditions (scan rate, power, atmosphere, etc.)─to understand its thermal decomposition. A predictive computational thermodynamic technique estimated the decomposition temperature of UI 4 (1,4-dioxane) 2 to uranium (U) metal to be 2236 °C, a temperature achievable under laser irradiation. Dictated by the presence of reactive, gaseous byproducts, the thermal decomposition of UI 4 (1,4-dioxane) 2 under furnace conditions up to 600 °C revealed the formation of UO 2 , UI x , and U(C 1- x O x ) y , while under laser irradiation, UI 4 (1,4-dioxane) 2 decomposed to UO 2 , U(C 1- x O x ) y , UC 2- z O z , and UC. Despite the fast dynamics associated with laser irradiation, the central uranium atom reacted with the thermal decomposition products of the ligand (1,4-dioxane = C 4 H 8 O 2 ) instead of producing pure U metal. The results highlight the potential to co-develop uranium precursors with specific irradiation procedures to advance nuclear materials research by finding new pathways to produce uranium carbide.

Density functional tight binding (DFTB) is an attractive method for accelerated quantum simulations of condensed matter due to its enhanced computational efficiency over standard density functional theory (DFT) approaches. However, DFTB models can be challenging to determine for individual systems of interest, especially for metallic and interfacial systems where different bonding arrangements can lead to significant changes in electronic states. In this regard, we have created a rapid-screening approach for determining systematically improvable DFTB interaction potentials that can yield transferable models for a variety of conditions. Our method leverages a recent reactive molecular dynamics force field where many-body interactions are represented by linear combinations of Chebyshev polynomials. This allows for the efficient creation of multi-center representations with relative ease, requiring only a small investment in initial DFT calculations. We have focused our workflow on TiH 2 as a model system and show that a relatively small training set based on unit-cell-sized calculations yields a model accurate for both bulk and surface properties. Our approach is easy to implement and can yield reliable DFTB models over a broad range of thermodynamic conditions, where physical and chemical properties can be difficult to interrogate directly and there is historically a significant reliance on theoretical approaches for interpretation and validation of experimental results.
