In recent years, quantum Fourier transform infrared (QFTIR) spectroscopy has emerged as an alternative to conventional absorption spectroscopy in the mid-infrared region of the spectrum. By harnessing induced coherence and spectral correlations of photon pairs in a nonlinear Michelson interferometer, this technique offers promising potential for the practical detection of organic gases. However, little research was conducted to bring QFTIR spectrometers closer to domestic or in-field usage. In this work, we present the first use of a QFTIR spectrometer for open-path detection of multiple interfering organic gases in ambient air. We built a nonlinear Michelson interferometer with 1.7 m-long arms to increase the absorption length, coupled with analysis techniques from classical differential absorption spectroscopy used for gas-traces detection. We thus characterize our spectrometer’s sensitivity to acetone, methanol, and ethanol vapors and demonstrate the accurate identification of mixtures of these gases released in ambient air. We show this characteristic is preserved over time by performing a measurement overnight and tracking the evolution of different gases’ average concentrations. These results constitute the first use-case of a QFTIR spectrometer as a detector of organic gases and, thus, represent an important milestone toward the development of such detectors in practical situations.

Abstract In the framework of the Laser Lightning Rod project, whose aim is to show that laser-induced filaments can guide lightning discharges over considerable distances, we study over a distance of 140 m the filaments created by a laser system with J-range pulses of 1 ps duration at 1 kHz repetition rate. We investigate the spatial evolution of the multiple filamentation regime using the fundamental beam at 1030 nm or using combination with the second and third harmonics. The measurements were made using both a collimated beam and a loosely focused beam.

Filamentation has extensively been explored and is well understood at repetition rates

Palcewska et al. first demonstrated near infrared (NIR) visual response in human volunteers upon two-photon absorption (TPA), in a seminal work of 2014, and assessed the process in terms of wavelength- and power-dependence on murine \textit{ex-vivo} retinas. In the present study, ex-vivo electroretinography (ERG) is further developed to perform a complete characterization of the effect of NIR pulse duration, energy, and focal spot size on the response. The same set of measurements is successively tested on living mice. We discuss how the nonlinear intensity dependence of the photon absorption process is transferred to the amplitude of the visual response acquired by ERG. Finally, we show that the manipulation of the spectral phase of NIR pulses can be translated to predictable change in the two-photon induced response under physiological excitation conditions.

Sub-μm thin samples are essential for spectroscopic purposes. The development of flat micro-jets enabled novel spectroscopic and scattering methods for investigating molecular systems in the liquid phase. However, the temperature of these ultra-thin liquid sheets in vacuum has not been systematically investigated. Here, we present a comprehensive temperature characterization using optical Raman spectroscopy of sub-micron flatjets produced by two different methods: colliding of two cylindrical jets and a cylindrical jet compressed by a high pressure gas. Our results reveal the dependence of the cooling rate on the material properties and the source characteristics, i.e., nozzle-orifice size, flow rate, and pressure. We show that materials with higher vapor pressures exhibit faster cooling rates, which is illustrated by comparing the temperature profiles of water and ethanol flatjets. In a sub-μm liquid sheet, the temperature of the water sample reaches around 268 K and the ethanol around 253 K close to the flatjet's terminus.

This review provides a comprehensive overview of the structural dynamics in topical gas- and condensed-phase systems on multiple length and time scales. Starting from vibrationally induced dissociation of small molecules in the gas phase, the question of vibrational and internal energy redistribution through conformational dynamics is further developed by considering coupled electron/proton transfer in a model peptide over many orders of magnitude. The influence of the surrounding solvent is probed for electron transfer to the solvent in hydrated I−. Next, the dynamics of a modified PDZ domain over many time scales is analyzed following activation of a photoswitch. The hydration dynamics around halogenated amino acid side chains and their structural dynamics in proteins are relevant for iodinated TyrB26 insulin. Binding of nitric oxide to myoglobin is a process for which experimental and computational analyses have converged to a common view which connects rebinding time scales and the underlying dynamics. Finally, rhodopsin is a paradigmatic system for multiple length- and time-scale processes for which experimental and computational methods provide valuable insights into the functional dynamics. The systems discussed here highlight that for a comprehensive understanding of how structure, flexibility, energetics, and dynamics contribute to functional dynamics, experimental studies in multiple wavelength regions and computational studies including quantum, classical, and more coarse grained levels are required.

Electron transfer and subsequent charge separation across donor-acceptor heterojunctions remain the most important areas of study in the field of third-generation photovoltaics. In this context, it is particularly important to unravel the dynamics of individual ultrafast processes (such as photoinduced electron transfer, carrier trapping and association, and energy transfer and relaxation), which prevail in materials and at their interfaces. In the frame of the National Center of Competence in Research “Molecular Ultrafast Science and Technology,” a research instrument of the Swiss National Science Foundation, several groups active in the field of ultrafast science in Switzerland have applied a number of complementary experimental techniques and computational simulation tools to scrutinize these critical photophysical phenomena. Structural, electronic, and transport properties of the materials and the detailed mechanisms of photoinduced charge separation in dye-sensitized solar cells, conjugated polymer- and small molecule-based organic photovoltaics, and high-efficiency lead halide perovskite solar energy converters have been scrutinized. Results yielded more than thirty research articles, an overview of which is provided here.

We investigate the triggering and guiding of DC high-voltage discharges over a distance of 37 cm by filaments produced by ultraviolet (266 nm) laser pulses of 200 ps duration. The latter reduce the breakdown electric field by half and allow up to 80% discharge probability in an electric field of 920 kV m ^–1 . This high efficiency is not further increased by adding nanosecond pulses in the Joule range at 532 and at 1064 nm. However, the latter statistically increases the guiding length, thereby accelerating the discharge by a factor of 2. This effect is due both to photodetachment and to the heating of the plasma channel, that increases the efficiency of avalanche ionization and reduces electron attachment and recombination.

The activity of the GAP-Biophotonics research group at the University of Geneva in the field of coherent control for discriminating similar biomolecules, such as flavins, proteins and DNA bases, is presented and future developments are discussed.

A straightforward high-yield synthesis for the photoinitiator bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phenylphosphane oxide (16, IRGACURE 819) involves: i) the reaction of phenyldichlorophosphane, PhPCl2, with sodium to give [Na2(P2Ph2)(tmeda)]6 (5); ii) protonation of 5 with tert-butanol to give 1,2-diphenyldiphosphane, PhHP-PHPh (12); iii) reduction of 12 by sodium to yield [Na(PHPh)]x (13); iv) protonation of 13 with tert-butanol to give phenylphosphane PhPH2 (14) in excellent yields; v) reaction of 14 with 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoylchloride (MesCOCl) in presence of the NaOt-Bu formed in steps ii and iv to give bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phenylphosphane 7; vi) oxygenation of 7 with 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide to give the final product 16. This reaction can be performed in toluene with about 4 vol-% of tmeda as an activator in a one-pot synthesis without changing the solvent. The structures determined by X-ray diffraction of the unique hexameric aggregate 5 and 16 are reported.

Although radiation curing is an established technology used in many industrial manufacturing processes, new applications and technical challenges stimulate the development of tailor-made photolatent catalysts. The development of a new bisacylphosphine oxide (BAPO) photoinitiator enables the efficient curing of coatings stabilized with a light stabilizer package consisting of a UV-absorber and a hindered amine light stabilizer (weather-resistant coatings for outdoor applications). Tailor-made photolatent catalysts represent a key feature in the development of new electronic applications like laser direct imaging for the production of printed circuit boards, color filters for liquid crystal displays used in computer flat screens and chemically amplified photoresists for microelectronics.

Organic corrosion inhibitors, which are used as additives in paints and lubricants to provide permanent corrosion protection, are briefly discussed.

We show how an ultrafast pump–pump excitation induces strong fluorescence depletion in biological samples, such as bacteria-containing droplets, in contrast with fluorescent interferents, such as polycyclic aromatic compounds, despite similar spectroscopic properties. Application to the optical remote discrimination of biotic versus non-biotic particles is proposed. Further improvement is required to allow the discrimination of one pathogenic among other non-pathogenic micro-organisms. We experimentally investigate the impact of pulse shape on the dynamics of laser-generated plasma in rare gases. Fast-rising triangular pulses with a slower decay lead to early ionization of the gas and depose energy more efficiently than their temporally reversed counterparts. As a result, in both argon and krypton, the induced shockwave as well as the plasma luminescence are stronger. This is due to an earlier availability of free electrons to undergo inverse Bremsstrahlung on the pulse trailing edge. Our results illustrate the ability of adequately tailored pulse shapes to optimize the energy deposition in gas plasmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
