Childhood wasting and stunting affect large numbers of children globally. Both are important risk factors for illness and death yet, despite the fact that these conditions can share common risk factors and are often seen in the same child, they are commonly portrayed as relatively distinct manifestations of undernutrition. In 2014, the Wasting and Stunting project was launched by the Emergency Nutrition Network. Its aim was to better understand the complex relationship and associations between wasting and stunting and examine whether current separations that were apparent in approaches to policy, financing, and programs were justified or useful. Based on the project's work, this article aims to bring a wasting and stunting lens to how research is designed and financed in order for the nutrition community to better understand, prevent, and treat child undernutrition. Discussion of lessons learnt focuses on the synergy and temporal relationships between children's weight loss and linear growth faltering, the proximal and distal factors that drive diverse forms of undernutrition, and identifying and targeting people most at risk. Supporting progress in all these areas requires research collaborations across interest groups that highlight the value of research that moves beyond a focus on single forms of undernutrition, and ensures that there is equal attention given to wasting as to other forms of malnutrition, wherever it is present.

Background Regular clinical reviews of people with COPD provide an opportunity to optimise management and are recommended in national and international guidelines. However, there are limited data about the relationship between having an annual review and other aspects of care quality, which might influence decision-making by healthcare professionals and commissioners.Method Using data from 74 827 people with COPD completing the Asthma+Lung UK COPD Patient Passport, between 2014 and 2022, we conducted adjusted logistic regression (adjusting for year) and compared receipt of key items of care between those reporting that they had had an annual review (65.3%) and those who did not (34.7%). To further capture patient experience, we also analysed 4228 free-text responses to the 2021 Asthma+Lung UK annual COPD survey to the question ‘What is the one thing that could improve your COPD care?’Results We found that the absence of an annual review was associated with significantly worse COPD care across all domains studied; in particular, inhaler training (yes: 80.8% vs no: 38.4%, adjusted OR (AOR): 8.18, 95% CI (7.89 to 8.47), having a written care plan (89.6% vs 56.9%, AOR 6.68 (95% CI 6.35 to 7.05) and medication knowledge (72.6% vs 33.6%, AOR 5.73 (95% CI 5.51 to 5.96). Thematic analysis of the 2021 COPD survey responses identified three areas to improve care: (1) access and support from healthcare services, (2) improved treatment effectiveness and (3) interaction between COPD and the social environment.Discussion Failure to deliver annual COPD reviews is associated with worse patient-reported experience of care quality. In parallel, people with COPD express a desire for greater support and access to healthcare services.

This study was conducted to evaluate soil fertility potentials of Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria. Stratified random sampling technique was used for soil sampling. Soil samples were collected from the seven districts (Boibini, Guyuk, Kurnyi, Banjiram, Chikila, Kola and Dumna districts) of the Local government based on variation in soil characteristics observed, Random samples were collected at surface (0 – 20 cm) and subsurface (20 – 50 cm). Ten profile pits were sunk at least one in each district and samples were collected from each horizon for laboratory analysis, Global Positioning System (GPS) was used for exact location and altitude of pedons. The soils were analysed to determine the morphological, physical and chemical properties. Results obtained revealed that soils of the study area averaged at 203m above sea level, soils are moderately deep and generally sandy loam to clay textured with weak to strong sub angular blocky structure. The soils are well drained to moderately drained with high chroma value of 7.5YR and 10YR. Bulk density and porosity of pedons and augered samples averaged at 1.40mg/kg and 47% respectively, chemical properties showed pH was near neutral, organic carbon, total nitrogen and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) were generally to be low, available phosphorus was generally moderate, total exchangeable bases (TEB), Base saturation, and effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) were high in soils of all the district of the study area. The soils of Bobini and Guyuk districts area were classified as Alfisols while Kurnyi, Banjiram, Chikila, Kola and Dumna districts are all Vertisols, according to USDA Soil Taxonomy. Three fertility classes were identified which are “S dm”, “C div” and “C divb”. The soil fertility of the study area can be improved and managed through integrated nutrient management system (INM).

Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) is a global strategy for enhancing food productivity amidst climate change uncertainties in the 21st century. CSA improves farmers’ incomes, reduces greenhouse emissions, and farming systems become resilient to climate change. Despite the vital role that CSA plays in the development of the agricultural industry and the economy, the extent to which CSA is related to sustainable agriculture (SA) is not well documented. Is CSA the same as SA? If they are the same, do CSA practices impose mitigation requirements for developing countries like Uganda? Studies or research on CSA and SA unfortunately have certain shortcomings. Lack of this knowledge makes it difficult to plan investments and develop policies that will increase farmers’ resilience to climate change and variability to improve SA. This study is aimed at assessing how CSA links to SA and whether the two contribute to climate change mitigation requirements. It was found that CSA and SA are also related in a way that the latter leads to lowering greenhouse gas emissions hence mitigating climate change. CSA and SA share a common principal goal of achieving food security. It was concluded that developing countries are the worst affected by the negative impacts of climate change and don’t have the adaptive capacity to respond to climate change effects.

Abstract Background The prevalence of several cardiovascular metabolic disorders are increasingly cause for concern in adolescents worldwide. Given the complex interrelations between metabolic risk (MR) and sociodemographic variables, the present study aims to examine the association between the presence of MR with sociodemographic characteristics (sex, skin color, residential area, and parental socioeconomic status) in adolescents from Southern Brazil. Methods Cross-sectional study conducted with 1,152 adolescents (507 males) aged between 12 and 17 years. MR was assessed using a continuous score (cMetS; sum of Z-scores of the following variables: waist circumference, systolic blood pressure (SBP), glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C, inverse], triglycerides [TG], and estimated cardiorespiratory fitness [CRF, inverse]). Poisson regression was used to examine associations between sociodemographic variables with the dichotomized cMetS and separate metabolic variables. The results were expressed with prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results The presence of MR (evaluated by the cMetS) was observed in 8.7% of adolescents. Higher MR was less prevalent among non-white adolescents (PR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.93; 0.99). Adolescents living in rural areas had a lower prevalence of the following metabolic variables; low HDL-C (PR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.94; 0.97), elevated TG (PR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.92; 0.99), elevated glucose (PR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.95; 0.98), and low CRF levels (PR: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.85; 0.92). Whereas, SBP was higher in those living in rural areas (PR: 1.11; 95% CI: 1.05; 1.17). In girls, there was a higher prevalence of raised TG (PR: 1.06; 95% CI: 1.02; 1.10) and lower levels of CRF (PR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.16; 1.24), but a lower prevalence of elevated glucose (PR: 0.97; 95% CI: 0.97; 0.99). Conclusion Higher MR prevalence was lower in those self-reporting non-white skin color and selected MR factors were less prevalent in those living in rural areas. The identification of groups at higher MR is important for early prevention and monitoring strategies for both Type 2 diabetes and later cardiovascular disease. Future studies should be conducted to assess the socio-cultural aspects of the relationships between MR and socio-cultural and lifestyle variables.

Floodplains known as 'Fadama' is encouraged in Nigeria by the world bank in order to boost agriculture and food security. This activity is being managed by the State ministries of agriculture through Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) nationwide. This is a case study of Jalingo area of Taraba State, Nigeria where farmers used any available water from rivers, streams and wells without any regulations. The water samples for quality analysis were collected in five (5) different floodplain locations from three (3) different sources. Fifteen (15) water samples were collected from river, borehole and well using plastic bottle container both in August (peak of raining season) and November (end of raining season) respectively. Data from water samples were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) to test for significant effect of source and location water quality for irrigation purposes. The suitability of the source and location water quality after comparing with the water standard for irrigation have most of their chemical properties within safe limit for irrigation purposes both in August and November respectively. (pH =6.26 to 6.81, Total Dissolved Solid, TDS = 113 to 345 mg/L, Total Suspended Solid, TSS = 1.72 to 1.95 mg/L, Bicarbonates, HCO3 = 5.76 to 10.88 mg/L, Carbonated, CO3 = 0.07 to 0.77 mg/L, Sodium, Na = 0.003 to 0.031 mg/L, Magnesium Mg = 4.84 to 5.93 mg/L, Calcium, Ca = 9.62 to 11.97 mg/L). From the results of the study, it could be observed that the quality of water across the locations irrespective of period of observation and source are good and hereby recommended for irrigation purposes.

In many countries, such as Norway, there are vast quantities of sea urchins that have formed barrens over large areas of the coastline. Research has shown that removal of sufficient quantities of sea urchins from these barrens can lead to them reverting to a macroalgae forest. Identifying the chemical composition of sea urchins for various uses, such as agricultural fertiliser, would incentivise this sea urchin removal. This study investigates the composition of sea urchins and whether the composition varies when sea urchin collection sites vary both geographically and temporally. Sea urchins were collected from three sites within 10 km of each other in northern Norway at three times through the year. The sea urchins were dried, crushed, powdered, and analysed for nutrient content. An elemental analysis from the sea urchin samples showed high calcium and relatively high magnesium levels; smaller relative quantities of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium were also found. Micronutrients such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu) were found. More importantly, both primary, macro-, and micronutrients showed high variability when collected from different sites and at different times of the year. Background Understanding the factors driving acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is key to reducing their impact on human health and well-being.Methods 5997 people with COPD, mean 66 years, 64% female, completed an online survey between December 2020 and May 2021 about living with COPD, developed by the charity Asthma + Lung UK.Results The 3731 (62.2%) survey participants reporting frequent (≥2/year) exacerbations were more likely to smoke (adjusted OR (AOR) 1.70, 95% CI 1.470 to 1.98), have lower annual household income (≤£20 000 (AOR 1.72, 95% CI 1.36 to 2.17), live in a cold and damp home (AOR 1.78, 95% CI 1.50 to 2.11) and report previous occupational exposure to dust, fumes and chemicals. Smokers were more likely to report attending hospital to manage their most recent acute exacerbation of COPD compared with ex-smokers (AOR 1.25, 95% CI 0.99 to 1.59).Discussion Strategies to improve COPD outcomes must address issues of deprivation and social justice.

ABSTRACT Substance use is a persistent concern for adolescents in many countries due to the significant negative impact on mental, physical and social outcomes. US research indicates that while 4.1% of 12–17‐year‐olds require treatment, <10% of those who require it access it. This paper summarises the literature available on the barriers and enablers to those under 18s attending substance use treatment to inform policy and practice. Using a systematic approach, we searched six databases for studies which reported barriers and enablers to those aged 18 and under accessing substance use treatment. Thirty‐two papers met the inclusion criteria and we present the findings using a narrative synthesis. Only one paper identified explored this topic in Europe. Barriers and enablers are presented across four themes: (1) individual factors, (2) societal factors, (3) Gateway Providers and (4) treatment service factors. Mental health nurses, especially those working with young people, should be aware that adolescents are unlikely to perceive their substance use as problematic and rely on adults to access treatment. Access appears more difficult for females and socially marginalised youth. Various professionals direct young people towards treatment, but clear protocols are needed to encourage them to intervene, which could be an opportunity for nurses to be innovative and lead in this area. Services perceived as adolescent‐specific, youth‐friendly and flexible encourage attendance while the cost of treatment, including time off work and transport, function as barriers. Local HII environment metallicities of 65 supernovae (SNe), obtained with INT/IDS, have been determined using the N2 and O3N2 strong emission line methods. Resulting cumulative distribution functions reveal a narrower distribution for Ib SNe (standard deviation σ ∼ 0.06 dex) compared to Ic and IIP distributions (σ ∼ 0.15 dex). This narrow distribution of Ib SNe is confirmed with an extended dataset using data from Galbany et al. (2018). Statistical tests confirm a statistically significant difference between the Ib and II-P metallicity distributions with < 5% probability that they result from the same progenitors. This narrow distribution suggests a lack of Type Ib SNe in low metallicity environments and points towards single star progenitors for these Type Ib SNe, rather than binaries. It also suggests that single massive stars at low metallicity are not commonly able to produce helium-rich Type Ib supernovae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim Corallococcus species are diverse in the natural environment with 10 new Corallococcus species having been characterized in just the last 5 years. As well as being an abundant myxobacterial genus, they produce several secondary metabolites, including Corallopyronin, Corramycin, Coralmycin, and Corallorazine. We isolated a novel strain Corallococcus spp RDP092CA from soil in South Wales, UK, using Candida albicans as prey bait and characterized its predatory activities against pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Methods and results The size of the RDP092CA genome was 8.5 Mb with a G + C content of 71.4%. Phylogenetically, RDP092CA is closely related to Corallococcus interemptor, C. coralloides , and C. exiguus. However, genome average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values are lower than 95% and 70% when compared to those type strains, implying that it belongs to a novel species. The RDP092CA genome harbours seven types of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) and 152 predicted antimicrobial peptides. In predation assays, RDP092CA showed good predatory activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Citrobacter freundii , and Staphylococcus aureus but not against Enterococcus faecalis. It also showed good antibiofilm activity against all five bacteria in biofilm assays. Antifungal activity against eight Candida spp. was variable, with particularly good activity against Meyerozyma guillermondii DSM 6381. Antimicrobial peptide RDP092CA_120 exhibited potent antibiofilm activity with >50% inhibition and >60% dispersion of biofilms at concentrations down to 1 μg/ml. Conclusions We propose that strain RDP092CA represents a novel species with promising antimicrobial activities, Corallococcus senghenyddensis sp. nov. Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) arise from pathogenic mutations in over 100 genes leading to impaired protein or lipid glycosylation. ALG1 encodes a β1,4 mannosyltransferase that catalyzes the addition of the first of nine mannose moieties to form a dolichol-lipid linked oligosaccharide intermediate required for proper N-linked glycosylation. ALG1 mutations cause a rare autosomal recessive disorder termed ALG1-CDG. To date 13 mutations in 18 patients from 14 families have been described with varying degrees of clinical severity. We identified and characterized 39 previously unreported cases of ALG1-CDG from 32 families and add 26 new mutations. Pathogenicity of each mutation was confirmed based on its inability to rescue impaired growth or hypoglycosylation of a standard biomarker in an alg1-deficient yeast strain. Using this approach we could not establish a rank order comparison of biomarker glycosylation and patient phenotype, but we identified mutations with a lethal outcome in the first two years of life. The recently identified protein-linked xeno-tetrasaccharide biomarker, NeuAc-Gal-GlcNAc2 , was seen in all 27 patients tested. Our study triples the number of known patients and expands the molecular and clinical correlates of this disorder.

Deletions of chromosome 1p36 affect approximately 1 in 5,000 newborns and are associated with developmental delay, intellectual disability, and defects involving the brain, eye, ear, heart, and kidney. Arginine-glutamic acid dipeptide repeats (RERE) is located in the proximal 1p36 critical region. RERE is a widely-expressed nuclear receptor coregulator that positively regulates retinoic acid signaling. Animal models suggest that RERE deficiency might contribute to many of the structural and developmental birth defects and medical problems seen in individuals with 1p36 deletion syndrome, although human evidence supporting this role has been lacking. In this report, we describe ten individuals with intellectual disability, developmental delay, and/or autism spectrum disorder who carry rare and putatively damaging changes in RERE. In all cases in which both parental DNA samples were available, these changes were found to be de novo. Associated features that were recurrently seen in these individuals included hypotonia, seizures, behavioral problems, structural CNS anomalies, ophthalmologic anomalies, congenital heart defects, and genitourinary abnormalities. The spectrum of defects documented in these individuals is similar to that of a cohort of 31 individuals with isolated 1p36 deletions that include RERE and are recapitulated in RERE-deficient zebrafish and mice. Taken together, our findings suggest that mutations in RERE cause a genetic syndrome and that haploinsufficiency of RERE might be sufficient to cause many of the phenotypes associated with proximal 1p36 deletions.

The article describes the case of a 74-year old woman diagnosed with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and showed multiple cranial nerve manifestations and nasopharyngeal pseudotumor. The patient demonstrated left facial nerve palsy, hypoesthesia, inflammation and swelling at the left nasopharyngreal area, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, and mass at the left lateral wall of nasopharynx. She was treated with methylprednisone and cyclosphosphamide. Other symptoms of GPA are indicated.

The study was carried out in Jalingo area of Taraba State, Nigeria with the sole aim of assessing the suitability of floodplains of Jalingo area for sugarcane production. Five floodplains considered were: Angwan Karofi, Mayo-gwoi, Nukkai, Old Magami and Sabon gari. Three composite soil samples were collected each at 0 – 15 and 15 – 30 cm depth in each of the floodplain areas to determine their physical and chemical properties. The results showed that soils of the floodplain areas were generally clay loam (36.40, 46.80 and 46.40 % of sand, silt and clay) with moderate porosity (43.66 %), bulk density (1.66 %) and high-water holding capacity (83.70 %). The chemical properties of the soil showed that pH is slightly acidic to neutral (6.47 – 7.65), moderate organic matter (2.97 %), Medium Nitrogen (0.22 – 0.70%), Moderate Magnesium (2.42 – 3.11cmol/kg) and Moderate CEC (17.73 cmol/kg). The results of the soil properties across the various floodplain locations were compared individually with the standard suitability ratings for sugarcane production where the soil suitability was identified as marginally suitable (Ms). The limiting factors identified for sugarcane production were OM, N, K and Mg. From the result of the study, it could be observed that effective management of these soils will require the application of N, P and K fertilizers and dolomitic lime or magnesium oxide to curb the limiting factors of N, P, K and Mg respectively for the production of sugarcane in the study area. Growing of sugarcane are recommended within the study areas since the soil conditions are moderately suitable with minimal constraints.
