Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt functionality in photovoltaic (PV) smart inverters provide mechanisms to ensure system voltage magnitudes and power factors remain within acceptable limits. However, these control functions can become unstable, introducing oscillations in system voltages when not appropriately configured or maliciously altered during a cyberattack. In the event that Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt control functions in a portion of PV smart inverters in a distribution grid are unstable, the proposed adaptation scheme utilizes the remaining and stably-behaving PV smart inverters and other Distributed Energy Resources to mitigate the effect of the instability. The adaptation mechanism is entirely decentralized, model-free, communication-free, and requires virtually no external configuration. We provide a derivation of the adaptive control approach and validate the algorithm in experiments on the IEEE 37 and 8500 node test feeders.

Targeted therapy (BRAF/MEK inhibitors) is frequently employed in the treatment of metastatic melanoma following immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy inefficacy or intolerance. Although BRAF inhibitors are commonly associated with cutaneous eruptions, they rarely cause severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions such as drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS). Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome is a severe drug reaction characterized by extensive eruption often seen in conjunction with fever, facial edema, lymphadenopathy, eosinophilia, atypical lymphocytosis, and variable visceral organ injury characteristically beginning 2-8 weeks after initiating the causative drug. We report a case of atypical DIHS with reduced latency, mucosal involvement, lymphopenia, normal eosinophils, and no lymphadenopathy that occurred secondary to vemurafenib and cobimetinib therapy following melanoma progression while on pembrolizumab. Previous immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy has been associated with atypical DIHS in patients on BRAF/MEK inhibitors. Early recognition of the atypical clinical features of this hypersensitivity reaction is important so that drug discontinuation and corticosteroids can be initiated early.

Linear porokeratosis is a rare variant of porokeratosis that is characterized by unilateral lesions along the lines of Blaschko. Like all variants of porokeratosis, linear porokeratosis is characterized by the histopathologic finding of cornoid lamellae bracketing the lesion. The underlying pathophysiology involves a two-hit post-zygotic knockdown of genes involved in mevalonate biosynthesis in embryonic keratinocytes. Although there is currently no standard or effective treatment, therapies targeted to rescue this pathway and restore keratinocyte cholesterol availability are promising. Presented here is a patient with a rare, extensive case of linear porokeratosis treated with compounded 2% lovastatin/2% cholesterol cream leading to partial resolution of the plaques.

Fast-acting smart inverters that utilize preset operating conditions to determine real and reactive power injection/consumption can create voltage instabilities (over-voltage, voltage oscillations and more) in an electrical distribution network if set-points are not properly configured. In this work, linear distribution power flow equations and droop-based Volt–Var and Volt–Watt control curves are used to analytically derive a stability criterion using Lyapunov analysis that includes the network operating condition. The methodology is generally applicable for control curves that can be represented as Lipschitz functions. The derived Lipschitz constants account for smart inverter hardware limitations for reactive power generation. A local policy is derived from the stability criterion that allows inverters to adapt their control curves by monitoring only local voltage, thus avoiding centralized control or information sharing with other inverters. The criterion is independent of the internal time-delays of smart inverters. Simulation results for inverters with and without the proposed stabilization technique demonstrate how smart inverters can mitigate voltage oscillations locally and mitigate real and reactive power flow disturbances at the substation under multiple scenarios. The study concludes with illustrations of how the control policy can dampen oscillations caused by solar intermittency and cyberattacks.

Palpable migratory arciform erythema (PMAE) is an uncommon T cell pseudolymphoma characterized by erythematous, annular-to-arciform papules and plaques. Although the eruption is self-limited in most cases, recurrences are routine. Diagnosis requires attention to clinical history as well as histopathologic analysis, which allow for differentiation from other T cell pseudolymphomas and gyrate erythemas. A common triggering factor has not been identified. We report a 60-year-old man who developed PMAE after IVIg infusion. Interestingly, although the individual eruptions were self-limited and resolved after several weeks, subsequent infusions predictably resulted in recurrence of PMAE, confirming the association. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of recurrent PMAE in association with IVIg infusions.

The increasing penetration of DER with smart-inverter functionality is set to transform the electrical distribution network from a passive system, with fixed injection/consumption, to an active network with hundreds of distributed controllers dynamically modulating their operating setpoints as a function of system conditions. This transition is being achieved through standardization of functionality through grid codes and/or international standards. DER, however, are unique in that they are typically neither owned nor operated by distribution utilities and, therefore, represent a new emerging attack vector for cyber-physical attacks. Within this work we consider deep reinforcement learning as a tool to learn the optimal parameters for the control logic of a set of uncompromised DER units to actively mitigate the effects of a cyber-attack on a subset of network DER.

BackgroundHeterodera glycines, commonly referred to as the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), is an obligatory and sedentary plant parasite that causes over a billion-dollar yield loss to soybean production annually. Although there are genetic determinants that render soybean plants resistant to certain nematode genotypes, resistant soybean cultivars are increasingly ineffective because their multi-year usage has selected for virulent H. glycines populations. The parasitic success of H. glycines relies on the comprehensive re-engineering of an infection site into a syncytium, as well as the long-term suppression of host defense to ensure syncytial viability. At the forefront of these complex molecular interactions are effectors, the proteins secreted by H. glycines into host root tissues. The mechanisms of effector acquisition, diversification, and selection need to be understood before effective control strategies can be developed, but the lack of an annotated genome has been a major roadblock.ResultsHere, we use PacBio long-read technology to assemble a H. glycines genome of 738 contigs into 123 Mb with annotations for 29,769 genes. The genome contains significant numbers of repeats (34%), tandem duplicates (18.7 Mb), and horizontal gene transfer events (151 genes). A large number of putative effectors (431 genes) were identified in the genome, many of which were found in transposons.ConclusionsThis advance provides a glimpse into the host and parasite interplay by revealing a diversity of mechanisms that give rise to virulence genes in the soybean cyst nematode, including: tandem duplications containing over a fifth of the total gene count, virulence genes hitchhiking in transposons, and 107 horizontal gene transfers not reported in other plant parasitic nematodes thus far. Through extensive characterization of the H. glycines genome, we provide new insights into H. glycines biology and shed light onto the mystery underlying complex host-parasite interactions. This genome sequence is an important prerequisite to enable work towards generating new resistance or control measures against H. glycines.

This study applied alterations in partial pressure of end‐tidal carbon dioxide (PETCO2${{P}_{{\mathrm{ETC}}{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$) to challenge dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) responses across the cardiac cycle in both biological sexes. A total of 20 participants (10 females and 10 males; aged 19–34 years) performed 4‐min bouts of repeated squat–stand manoeuvres (SSMs) at 0.05 and 0.10 Hz (randomized orders) with PETCO2${{P}_{{\mathrm{ETC}}{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$ clamped at ∼40 mmHg. The protocol was repeated for hypercapnic (∼55 mmHg) and hypocapnic (∼20 mmHg) conditions. Middle cerebral artery (MCA) and posterior cerebral artery (PCA) were insonated via transcranial Doppler ultrasound. Dynamic end‐tidal forcing clamped PETCO2${{P}_{{\mathrm{ETC}}{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$, and finger photoplethysmography quantified beat‐to‐beat changes in blood pressure. Linear regressions were performed for transfer function analysis metrics including power spectrum densities, coherence, phase, gain and normalized gain (nGain) with adjustment for sex. During hypercapnic conditions, phase metrics were reduced from eucapnic levels (all P < 0.009), while phase increased during the hypocapnic stage during both 0.05 and 0.10 Hz SSMs (all P < 0.037). Sex differences were present with females displaying greater gain and nGain systole metrics during 0.10 Hz SSMs (all P < 0.041). Across PETCO2${{P}_{{\mathrm{ETC}}{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$ stages, females displayed reduced buffering against systolic aspects of the cardiac cycle and augmented gain. Sex‐related variances in dCA could explain sex differences in the occurrence of clinical conditions such as orthostatic intolerance and stroke, though the effect of fluctuating sex hormones and contraceptive use on dCA metrics is not yet understood. The isolated river drainages of eastern North America serve as a natural laboratory to investigate the roles of allopatry and secondary contact in the evolutionary trajectories of recently diverged lineages. Drainage divides facilitate allopatric speciation, but due to their sensitivity to climatic and geomorphological changes, neighboring rivers frequently coalesce, creating recurrent opportunities of isolation and contact throughout the history of aquatic lineages. The freshwater mussel Quadrula quadrula is widely distributed across isolated rivers of eastern North America and possesses high phenotypic and molecular variation across its range. We integrate sequence data from three genomes, including female‐ and male‐inherited mitochondrial markers and thousands of nuclear encoded SNPs with morphology and geography to illuminate the group's divergence history. Across contemporary isolated rivers, we found continuums of molecular and morphological variation, following a pattern of isolation by distance. In contact zones, hybridization was frequent with no apparent fitness consequences, as advanced hybrids were common. Accordingly, we recognize Q. quadrula as a single cohesive species with subspecific variation (Q. quadrula rumphiana). Demographic modeling and divergence dating supported a divergence history characterized by allopatric vicariance followed by secondary contact, likely driven by river rearrangements and Pleistocene glacial cycles. Despite clinal range‐wide variation and hybridization in contact zones, the process‐based species delimitation tool delimitR, which considers demographic scenarios like secondary contact, supported the delimitation of the maximum number of species tested. As such, when interpreting species delimitation results, we suggest careful consideration of spatial sampling and subsequent geographic patterns of biological variation, particularly for wide‐ranging taxa. In this review, we have amalgamated the literature, taking a multimodal neuroimaging approach to quantify the relationship between neuronal firing and haemodynamics during a task paradigm (i.e., neurovascular coupling response), while considering confounding physiological influences. Original research articles that used concurrent neuronal and haemodynamic quantification in humans (n ≥ 10) during a task paradigm were included from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE and PsychINFO. Articles published before 31 July 2023 were considered for eligibility. Rapid screening was completed by the first author. Two authors completed the title/abstract and full‐text screening. Article quality was assessed using a modified version of the National Institutes of Health Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross‐Sectional Studies. A total of 364 articles were included following title/abstract and full‐text screening. The most common combination was EEG/functional MRI (68.7%), with cognitive (48.1%) and visual (27.5%) tasks being the most common. The majority of studies displayed an absence/minimal control of blood pressure, arterial gas concentrations and/or heart rate (92.9%), and only 1.3% monitored these factors. A minority of studies restricted or collected data pertaining to caffeine (7.4%), exercise (0.8%), food (0.5%), nicotine (2.7%), the menstrual cycle (0.3%) or cardiorespiratory fitness levels (0.5%). The cerebrovasculature is sensitive to numerous factors; thus, to understand the neurovascular coupling response fully, better control for confounding physiological influences of blood pressure and respiratory metrics is imperative during study‐design formulation. Moreover, further work should continue to examine sex‐based differences, the influence of sex steroid hormone concentrations and cardiorespiratory fitness. Quasiparticles are low-energy excitations with important roles in condensed matter physics. An intriguing example is provided by Majorana quasiparticles, which are equivalent to their antiparticles. Despite being implicated in neutrino oscillations and topological superconductivity, their experimental realizations remain very rare. Here, we propose a purely classical realization of Majorana fermions in terms of three-dimensional disclination lines in active nematics. The underlying reason is the well-known equivalence, in 3D, between a +1=2 local defect profile and a -1=2 profile, which acts as its antiparticle. The mapping also requires proving that defect profiles transform as spinors, and activity is needed to overcome the elastic cost associated with these excitations, so they spontaneously appear in steady state. We combine topological considerations and numerics to show that active nematics under confinement spontaneously create in their interior topologically charged disclination lines and loops, akin to Majorana quasiparticles with finite momentum. Within a long channel, the phenomenology we observe resembles that of the Kitaev chain, as Majorana-like states appear near the boundaries, while a delocalized topological excitation arises in the form of a chiral disclination line. The analogy between 3D nematic defects and topological quasiparticles further suggests that active turbulence can be viewed as a topological phase, where defects percolate to form delocalized topological quasiparticles similar to those observed in the channel. We propose that three-dimensional active disclinations can be used to probe the physics of Majorana spinors at much larger scale than that for which they were originally introduced, potentially facilitating their experimental study. There are differences within the literature regarding the upper frequency cut‐off point of the dynamic cerebral autoregulation (CA) high‐pass filter. The projection pursuit regression approach has demonstrated that the upper frequency limit is ∼0.07 Hz, whereas another approach [transfer function analysis (TFA) phase approaching zero] indicated a theoretical upper frequency limit for the high‐pass filter of 0.24 Hz. We investigated how these limits accurately represent the CA upper frequency limit, in addition to extending earlier findings with respect to biological sexes and across the cardiac cycle. Sixteen participants (nine females and seven males) performed repeated squat–stand manoeuvres at frequencies of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.25 Hz, with insonation of the middle and posterior cerebral arteries. Linear regression modelling with adjustment for sex and order of squat completion was used to compared TFA gain and phase with 0.25 Hz (above the theoretical limit of CA). The upper frequency limit of CA with TFA gain was within the range of 0.05–0.10 Hz, whereas TFA phase was within the range of 0.20–0.25 Hz, and consistent between vessels, between sexes and across the cardiac cycle. Females displayed greater middle cerebral artery gain compared with males (all P < 0.047), and no phase differences were present (all P > 0.072). Although sex‐specific differences were present for specific TFA metrics at a given frequency, the upper frequency limit of autoregulation was similar between cerebral conduit vessels, cardiac cycle phase and biological sex. Future work is warranted to determine whether an upper frequency limit exists with respect to hysteresis analyses. Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a systemic connective tissue disorder stemming from mutations in the gene encoding Fibrillin-1 (Fbn1), a key extracellular matrix glycoprotein. This condition manifests with various clinical features, the most critical of which is the formation of aortic root aneurysms. Reduced nitric oxide (NO) production due to diminished endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity has been linked to MFS aortic aneurysm pathology. Caveolin-1 (Cav1), a structural protein of plasma membrane caveolae, is known to inhibit eNOS activity, suggesting its involvement in MFS aneurysm progression by modulating NO levels. In this study, we examined the role of Cav1 in aortic smooth muscle and endothelial function, aortic wall elasticity, and wall strength in male and female MFS mice (FBN1+/Cys1041Gly) by generating developing Cav1-deficient MFS mice (MFS/Cav1KO). Our findings reveal that Cav1 ablation leads to a pronounced reduction in aortic smooth muscle contraction in response to phenylephrine, attributable to an increase in NO production in the aortic wall. Furthermore, we observed enhanced aortic relaxation responses to acetylcholine in MFS/Cav1KO mice, further underscoring Cav1's inhibitory impact on NO synthesis within the aorta. Notably, van Gieson staining and chamber myography analyses showed improved elastin fiber structure and wall strength in male MFS/Cav1KO mice, whereas these effects were absent in female counterparts. Cav1's regulatory influence on aortic root aneurysm development in MFS through NO-mediated modulation of smooth muscle and endothelial function, with notable sex-dependent variations. Cerebral hemodynamics have been quantified during exercise via transcranial Doppler ultrasound, as it has high-sensitivity to movement artifacts and displays temporal superiority. Currently, limited research exists regarding how different exercise modalities and postural changes impact the cerebrovasculature across the cardiac cycle. Ten participants (4 females and 6 males) ages 20–29 completed three exercise tests (treadmill, supine, and upright cycling) to volitional fatigue. Physiological data collected included middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv), blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and respiratory parameters. Normalized data were analyzed for variance and effect sizes were calculated to examine differences between physiological measures across the three exercise modalities. Systolic MCAv was greater during treadmill compared to supine and upright cycling (p < 0.001, (large) effect size), and greater during upright versus supine cycling (p < 0.017, (large)). Diastolic MCAv was lower during treadmill versus cycling exercise only at 60% maximal effort (p < 0.005, (moderate)) and no differences were observed between upright and supine cycling. No main effect was found for mean and diastolic BP (p > 0.05, (negligible)). Systolic BP was lower during treadmill versus supine cycling at 40% and 60% intensity (p < 0.05, (moderate–large)) and greater during supine versus upright at only 60% intensity (p < 0.003, (moderate)). The above differences were not explained by partial pressure of end-tidal carbon dioxide levels (main effect: p = 0.432). The current study demonstrates the cerebrovascular and cardiovascular systems respond heterogeneously to different exercise modalities and aspects of the cardiac cycle.
