Abstract Voice production of humans and most mammals is governed by the MyoElastic-AeroDynamic (MEAD) principle, where an air stream is modulated by self-sustained vocal fold oscillation to generate audible air pressure fluctuations. An alternative mechanism is found in ultrasonic vocalizations of rodents, which are established by an aeroacoustic (AA) phenomenon without vibration of laryngeal tissue. Previously, some authors argued that high-pitched human vocalization is also produced by the AA principle. Here, we investigate the so-called “whistle register” voice production in nine professional female operatic sopranos singing a scale from C6 (≈ 1047 Hz) to G6 (≈ 1568 Hz). Super-high-speed videolaryngoscopy revealed vocal fold collision in all participants, with closed quotients from 30 to 73%. Computational modeling showed that the biomechanical requirements to produce such high-pitched voice would be an increased contraction of the cricothyroid muscle, vocal fold strain of about 50%, and high subglottal pressure. Our data suggest that high-pitched operatic soprano singing uses the MEAD mechanism. Consequently, the commonly used term “whistle register” does not reflect the physical principle of a whistle with regard to voice generation in high pitched classical singing.

A computational neuromuscular control system that generates lung pressure and three intrinsic laryngeal muscle activations (cricothyroid, thyroarytenoid, and lateral cricoarytenoid) to control the vocal source was developed. In the current study, LeTalker, a biophysical computational model of the vocal system was used as the physical plant. In the LeTalker, a three-mass vocal fold model was used to simulate self-sustained vocal fold oscillation. A constant /ə/ vowel was used for the vocal tract shape. The trachea was modeled after MRI measurements. The neuromuscular control system generates control parameters to achieve four acoustic targets (fundamental frequency, sound pressure level, normalized spectral centroid, and signal-to-noise ratio) and four somatosensory targets (vocal fold length, and longitudinal fiber stress in the three vocal fold layers). The deep-learning-based control system comprises one acoustic feedforward controller and two feedback (acoustic and somatosensory) controllers. Fifty thousand steady speech signals were generated using the LeTalker for training the control system. The results demonstrated that the control system was able to generate the lung pressure and the three muscle activations such that the four acoustic and four somatosensory targets were reached with high accuracy. After training, the motor command corrections from the feedback controllers were minimal compared to the feedforward controller except for thyroarytenoid muscle activation.

The quasi-steady flow assumption (QSFA) is commonly used in the field of biomechanics of phonation. It approximates time-varying glottal flow with steady flow solutions based on frozen glottal shapes, ignoring unsteady flow behaviors and vocal fold motion. This study examined the limitations of QSFA in human phonation using numerical methods by considering factors of phonation frequency, air inertance in the vocal tract, and irregular glottal shapes. Two sets of irregular glottal shapes were examined through dynamic, pseudo-static, and quasi-steady simulations. The differences between dynamic and quasi-steady/pseudo-static simulations were measured for glottal flow rate, glottal wall pressure, and sound spectrum to evaluate the validity of QSFA. The results show that errors in glottal flow rate and wall pressure predicted by QSFA were small at 100 Hz but significant at 500 Hz due to growing flow unsteadiness. Air inertia in the vocal tract worsened predictions when interacting with unsteady glottal flow. Flow unsteadiness also influenced the harmonic energy ratio, which is perceptually important. The effects of glottal shape and glottal wall motion on the validity of QSFA were found to be insignificant.

In its broadest definition, Vocology is the study of vocalization, much like audiology is the study of hearing. Vocology includes the exploration of the full capability of human and animal sound production, some of which is embedded in human speech. For professional practice, a secondary definition of Vocology is the science and practice of voice habilitation, concept that has been in existence for more than two decades. The emphasis is on habilitation rather than re-habilitation, so that the field does not infringe on speech-language pathology. Besides, it does include the important area of animal vocalization.

Simulation of the acoustics and biomechanics of sound production in humans and animals began half a century ago. The three major components are the mechanics of tissue under self-sustained oscillation, the transport of air from the lungs to the lips, and the propagation of sound in the airways. Both low-dimensional and high-dimensional computer models have successfully predicted control of pitch, loudness, spectral content, vowel production, and many other features of speaking and singing. However, the problems of computational efficiency, validity, and accuracy have not been adequately addressed. Low-dimensional models are often more revealing of nonlinear phenomena in coupled oscillators, but the simplifying assumptions are not always validated. High-dimensional models can provide more accuracy, but interpretations of results are sometimes clouded by computational redundancy and uncertainty of parameters. The next generation will likely combine pre-calculations and machine learning with abbreviated critical calculations.

Any specific vowel sound that humans produce can be represented in terms of four perceptual features in addition to the vowel category. They are pitch, loudness, brightness, and roughness. Corresponding acoustic features chosen here are fundamental frequency (fo), sound pressure level (SPL), normalized spectral centroid (NSC), and approximate entropy (ApEn). In this study, thyroarytenoid (TA) and cricothyroid (CT) activations were varied computationally to study their relationship with these four specific acoustic features. Additionally, postural and material property variables such as vocal fold length (L) and fiber stress ( σ ) in the three vocal fold tissue layers were also calculated. A fiber-gel finite element model developed at National Center for Voice and Speech was used for this purpose. Muscle activation plots were generated to obtain the dependency of postural and acoustic features on TA and CT muscle activations. These relationships were compared against data obtained from previous in vivo human larynx studies and from canine laryngeal studies. General trends are that fo and SPL increase with CT activation, while NSC decreases when CT activation is raised above 20%. With TA activation, acoustic features have no uniform trends, except SPL increases uniformly with TA if there is a co-variation with CT activation. Trends for postural variables and material properties are also discussed in terms of activation levels.

How accurately can sound pressure levels (SPLs) of speech be estimated from skin vibration of the neck? Measurements using a small accelerometer were carried out in 27 subjects (10 males and 17 females) who read Rainbow and Marvin Williams passages in soft, comfortable, and loud voice, while skin acceleration levels (SALs) and SPLs were simultaneously registered and analyzed every 30 ms. The results indicate that the mean SPL of voiced speech can be estimated with accuracy better than 2.8 dB in 95% of the cases when the subjects are individually calibrated. This makes the accelerometer an interesting sensor for SPL measurement of speech when microphones are problematic to use (e.g., noisy environments or in voice dosimetry). The estimates of equivalent SPL, which is the logarithm of averaged relative energy of voiced speech, were found to be up to 1.5 dB less accurate than the mean SPL. The estimation accuracy for instantaneous SPLs was worse than for the mean and equivalent SPLs (on average 6 and 5 dB for males and females, respectively). 2005 Acoustical Society of America. It is common practice in laryngeal research laboratories to store excised larynges and vocal fold tissue specimens frozen, presumably to preserve viability and structural integrity of the specimens for physiologic and biomechanical experiments. However, little is known about the biomechanical effects of postmortem changes and frozen storage in vocal fold tissues. This study attempted to quantify the effects of postmortem changes and freezing on the viscoelastic shear properties of the canine vocal fold mucosa. Sixteen larynges were excised from adult dogs immediately postmortem in a viable state. Using a torsional rheometer, the complex shear modulus (G^{\/math> of the mucosal tissue from one vocal fold of each larynx was measured as a function of frequency (0.01–15 Hz) by linear small-amplitude oscillation experiments. Measurement was repeated for ten mucosal specimens after 24 h of postmortem storage in saline solution at room temperature. Eleven of the 16 larynges were frozen and stored at −20°C, six of them at a slow rate of cooling (storage in a regular freezer) and five others by quick freezing (chilling by liquid nitrogen prior to frozen storage). The larynges were thawed slowly overnight after one month and the viscoelastic shear properties of the contralateral vocal fold mucosa were measured. Results showed that the elastic shear modulus (G＾ {\prime }) and dynamic viscosity (\eta ＾ {\prime }) of the vocal fold mucosa did not seem to change significantly after 24 h of storage in saline at room temperature, nor after one month of frozen storage following quick freezing, whereas both G＾ {\prime } and \eta ＾ {\prime } decreased significantly for tissues that were slowly frozen. These findings supported the feasibility of using quick freezing to preserve laryngeal tissues for in vitro biomechanical testing, for excised larynx experiments, and for tissue engineering applications. © 2003 Biomedical Engineering Society. The unique avian vocal organ, the syrinx, is located at the caudal end of the trachea. Although a larynx is also present at the opposite end, birds phonate only with the syrinx. Why only birds evolved a novel sound source at this location remains unknown, and hypotheses about its origin are largely untested. Here, we test the hypothesis that the syrinx constitutes a biomechanical advantage for sound production over the larynx with combined theoretical and experimental approaches. We investigated whether the position of a sound source within the respiratory tract affects acoustic features of the vocal output, including fundamental frequency and efficiency of conversion from aerodynamic energy to sound. Theoretical data and measurements in three bird species suggest that sound frequency is influenced by the interaction between sound source and vocal tract. A physical model and a computational simulation also indicate that a sound source in a syringeal position produces sound with greater efficiency. Interestingly, the interactions between sound source and vocal tract differed between species, suggesting that the syringeal sound source is optimized for its position in the respiratory tract. These results provide compelling evidence that strong selective pressures for high vocal efficiency may have been a major driving force in the evolution of the syrinx. The longer trachea of birds compared to other tetrapods made them likely predisposed for the evolution of a syrinx. A long vocal tract downstream from the sound source improves efficiency by facilitating the tuning between fundamental frequency and the first vocal tract resonance.

Vocal production requires active control of the respiratory system, larynx and vocal tract. Vocal sounds in mammals are produced by flow-induced vocal fold oscillation, which requires vocal fold tissue that can sustain the mechanical stress during phonation. Our understanding of the relationship between morphology and vocal function of vocal folds is very limited. Here we tested the hypothesis that vocal fold morphology and viscoelastic properties allow a prediction of fundamental frequency range of sounds that can be produced, and minimal lung pressure necessary to initiate phonation. We tested the hypothesis in lions and tigers who are well-known for producing low frequency and very loud roaring sounds that expose vocal folds to large stresses. In histological sections, we found that the Panthera vocal fold lamina propria consists of a lateral region with adipocytes embedded in a network of collagen and elastin fibers and hyaluronan. There is also a medial region that contains only fibrous proteins and hyaluronan but no fat cells. Young's moduli range between 10 and 2000 kPa for strains up to 60%. Shear moduli ranged between 0.1 and 2 kPa and differed between layers. Biomechanical and morphological data were used to make predictions of fundamental frequency and subglottal pressure ranges. Such predictions agreed well with measurements from natural phonation and phonation of excised larynges, respectively. We assume that fat shapes Panthera vocal folds into an advantageous geometry for phonation and it protects vocal folds. Its primary function is probably not to increase vocal fold mass as suggested previously. The large square-shaped Panthera vocal fold eases phonation onset and thereby extends the dynamic range of the voice.
