Growing interest in sustainable energy has gathered significant attention for alternative technologies, with hydrogen-based solutions emerging as a crucial component in the transition to cleaner and more resilient energy systems. Following that, hydrogen-based microgrids, integrated with renewable energy sources including wind and solar, have gained substantial attention as an upcoming pathway toward long-term energy sustainability. Hydrogen, produced through processes such as electrolysis and steam methane reforming, can be stored in various forms including compressed gas, liquid, or solid-state hydrides, and later utilized for electricity generation through fuel cells and gas turbines. This dynamic energy system offers highly flexible, scalable, and resilient solutions for various applications. Specifically, hydrogen-based microgrids are particularly suitable for offshore and islanded applications, with geographical factors, adverse environmental conditions, and limited access to conventional energy solutions. This is critical for energy independence, long-term storage capacity, and grid stability. This review explores topological and functional-based classifications of microgrids, advancements in hydrogen generation, storage, and utilization technologies, and their integration with microgrid systems. It also critically evaluates the key challenges of each technology, including cost, efficiency, and scalability, which impact the feasibility of hydrogen microgrids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preparation of neutral non-volatile molecules intact in the gas phase for mass spectrometry or chemical dynamics experiments remains a challenge for many classes of molecules. Here, we report the design and characterization of a fiber-coupled laser-based thermal desorption source capable of preparing intact neutral molecules at high molecular densities in the gas phase for use in velocity-map imaging experiments. Within this source, the sample is deposited onto a thin tantalum foil. Irradiation of the foil from the reverse side by a focused laser beam leads to highly localized heating of the sample, resulting in desorption of a plume of molecules into the gas phase. The fiber-coupled design simplifies the alignment of the desorption laser beam, and the ability to rotate the foil relative to the fixed laser beam allows the sample to be continually refreshed under vacuum. We use 118 nm photoionization of three test molecules—uracil, adenine, and phenylalanine—to characterize the source and to demonstrate various aspects of its performance. These include the dependence of the velocity-map imaging performance on the size of the interaction region and the dependence of the laser-induced desorption source emission on desorption laser power and heating time. Signal levels recorded in these measurements are comparable to those we typically obtain in similar experiments using a pulsed supersonic molecular beam, and we, therefore, believe that the source has considerable potential for use in a wide range of chemical dynamics and other experiments. The radical cations of diamondoids are important intermediates in their functionalization reactions and are also candidates as carriers for astronomical absorption and emission features. Although neutral diamondoids have been studied extensively, information regarding their radical cations is largely lacking, particularly for functionalized diamondoid derivatives. Herein, we characterize the structure of the 1-cyanoadamantane radical cation (C10H15CN+, AdCN+) using infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy of mass selected AdCN+N2 clusters in the XH stretch range (2400–3500 cm−1) and dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations (B3LYP-D3BJ/cc-pVTZ). A group of three distinct CH stretch bands are observed in the 2800–3000 cm−1 range, in addition to a highly redshifted absorption at 2580 cm−1 attributed to the acidic CH proton predicted by calculations. An unexpected broad absorption peaking at 3320 cm−1 is also detected and assigned to an NH stretch mode based on its width and frequency. Calculations indicate that hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the adamantyl cage (C10H15, Ady) to the N atom of the CN group yields lower energy structures, with an open-cage isomer exhibiting such hydrogen transfer being the global minimum on the potential energy surface. The energy barriers involved in the formation of this open-cage isomer are also lower than those calculated for generation of the analogous open-cage 1-amantadine cation isomer which has previously been identified by IRPD. The combined consideration of IRPD spectra and calculations indicates a major population of the nascent canonical closed-cage isomer and a smaller population of the global minimum isomer featuring both cage-opening and hydrogen transfer. We have measured recurrent fluorescence (RF) cooling rates of internally hot tetracene cations, C18H12+, as functions of their storage times and internal energies in two different electrostatic ion-beam storage rings – the cryogenic ring DESIREE with a circumference of 8.6 meters in Stockholm and the much smaller room temperature ring Mini-Ring in Lyon, which has a circumference of 0.71 meters. The RF rates were measured to be as high as 150 to 1000 s−1 for internal energies in the 7 to 9.4 eV energy range, where we have probed the time evolution of the internal energy distribution with nanosecond laser pulses with a 1 kHz repetition rate. These RF rates are found to be significantly higher than those of previously investigated smaller PAHs such as e.g. anthracene and naphthalene, for which the lowest non-forbidden electronic excited state, the D2 state, is populated with a smaller probability by inverse internal conversion. Furthermore, the D2–D0 transition rate is smaller for these smaller molecules than for tetracene. The complementary features of the two storage rings allow for RF rate measurements in a broader internal energy range than has been possible before. The smaller sampling period of about 6 μs in Mini-Ring is ideal to study the cooling dynamics of the hotter ions that decay fast, whereas DESIREE with a sampling period of about 60 μs is better suited to study the colder ions that decay on longer timescales ranging up to hundreds of milliseconds. The excellent agreement between the two series of measurements in the region where they overlap demonstrates the complementarity of the two electrostatic ion-beam storage rings. Photodissociation molecular dynamics of gas-phase 2,5-diiodothiophene molecules was studied in an electron-energy-resolved electron-multi-ion coincidence experiment performed at the FinEstBeAMS beamline of MAX IV synchrotron. Following the photoionization of the iodine 4d subshell and the Auger decay, the dissociation landscape of the molecular dication was investigated as a function of the Auger electron energy. Concentrating on an major dissociation pathway, C4H2I2S2+ → C4H2S+ + I+ + I, and accessing the timescales of the process via ion momentum correlation analysis, it was revealed how this three-body process changes depending on the available internal energy. Using a generalized secondary dissociation model, the process was shown to evolve from secondary dissociation regime towards concerted dissociation as the available energy increased, with the secondary dissociation time constant changing from 1.5 ps to 129 fs. The experimental results were compared with simulations using a stochastic charge-hopping molecular mechanics model. We investigate the fragmentation dynamics of adamantane dications produced after core-ionization at the carbon edge followed by Auger decay. The combination of high-resolution electron spectroscopy, energy-resolved electron-ion multi-coincidence spectroscopy and different theoretical models allows us to give a complete characterization of the processes involved after ionization. We show that energy- and site-sensitivity is observed even for a highly-symmetric molecule that lacks any unique atomic site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radical cations of diamondoids, a fundamental class of very stable cyclic hydrocarbon molecules, play an important role in their functionalization reactions and the chemistry of the interstellar medium. Herein, we characterize the structure, energy, and intermolecular interaction of clusters of the amantadine radical cation (Ama+, 1‐aminoadamantane) with solvent molecules of different interaction strength by infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy of mass‐selected Ama+Ln clusters, with L=Ar (n≤3) and L=N2 and H2O (n=1), and dispersion‐corrected density functional theory calculations (B3LYP−D3/cc‐pVTZ). Three isomers of Ama+ generated by electron ionization are identified by the vibrational properties of their rather different NH2 groups. The ligands bind preferentially to the acidic NH2 protons, and the strength of the NH...L ionic H‐bonds are probed by the solvation‐induced red‐shifts in the NH stretch modes. The three Ama+ isomers include the most abundant canonical cage isomer (I) produced by vertical ionization, which is separated by appreciable barriers from two bicyclic distonic iminium ions obtained from cage‐opening (primary radical II) and subsequent 1,2 H‐shift (tertiary radical III), the latter of which is the global minimum on the Ama+ potential energy surface. The effect of solvation on the energetics of the potential energy profile revealed by the calculations is consistent with the observed relative abundance of the three isomers. Comparison to the adamantane cation indicates that substitution of H by the electron‐donating NH2 group substantially lowers the barriers for the isomerization reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This roadmap article highlights recent advances, challenges and future prospects in studies of the dynamics of molecules and clusters in the gas phase. It comprises nineteen contributions by scientists with leading expertise in complementary experimental and theoretical techniques to probe the dynamics on timescales spanning twenty order of magnitudes, from attoseconds to minutes and beyond, and for systems ranging in complexity from the smallest (diatomic) molecules to clusters and nanoparticles. Combining some of these techniques opens up new avenues to unravel hitherto unexplored reaction pathways and mechanisms, and to establish their significance in, e.g. radiotherapy and radiation damage on the nanoscale, astrophysics, astrochemistry and atmospheric science. The laboratory study of prebiotic molecules interacting with solar wind ions is important to understand their role in the emergence of life in the complex context of the astrochemistry of circumstellar environments. In this work, we present the first study of the interaction of hydantoin (C3N2O2H4, 100 a.m.u.) with solar wind minority multi-charged ions: O6+ at 30 keV and He2+ at 8 keV. The fragmentation mass spectra as well as correlation maps resulting from the interaction are presented and discussed in this paper. Prompt and delayed dissociations from metastable states of the ionized molecule have been observed and the corresponding lifetimes measured. Experimental results are completed by quantum Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for energies, structures and dynamics (Internal Reaction Coordinates and Dynamic Reaction Coordinates) of the molecule for its different reachable charge states and the major observed fragmentation pathways. These calculations show that the molecule can only support two charges before spontaneously dissociating in agreement with the experimental observations. Calculations also demonstrate that hydantoin's ring opens after double ionization of the molecule which may enhance its reactivity in the background of biological molecule formation in a cirmcumstellar environment. For the major experimentally observed fragmentations (like 44 a.m.u./56 a.m.u. dissociation), Internal Reaction Coordinate (IRC) calculations were performed pointing out for example the important role of hydrogen transfer in the fragmentation processes.
