Background: Any portion of the body that has sustained damage due to mechanical force is referred to as an injury or wound. Weapon use, blunt force, and sharp force can all cause mechanical injuries. In many nations, the most common method of homicide is the use of sharp objects, particularly knives. One of a forensic pathologist's main responsibilities in the realm of forensics is wound examination. By identifying prospective criminal suspects and tracking the origin and progression of violent occurrences, wound assessment supports criminal investigations. Aim: The current review provides a view on wounds/injuries, their classifications, incised wounds, how to differentiate them from lacerations, and the importance of wound examination in the field of forensics. Conclusion: In summary, researchers have classified wounds/injuries according to many factors, and they frequently emphasize the significance of wound examination in the field of forensics. Alprazolam is most commonly used benzodiazepine in overdose for deliberate self-poisoning. Glutaraldehyde is used for cold sterilization of medical, surgical and dental equipment. Poisoning due to accidental exposure as well as self-poisoning is common with glutaraldehyde. Background: Skin is the outermost layer that covers and protects the body and is vulnerable to trauma, such as wounds. Turmeric and sea cucumbers are known to have properties in wound healing. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a mixture of sea cucumber and turmeric extracts in the form of a cream to heal incision wounds in rats. Methods: Twenty-five male white rats, Sprague Dawley strain, and body weights of 250–300 g were anesthetized, and their skins were slashed. The rats were divided into five groups, namely negative control (wounds without treatment), positive controls (wounds treated with Bioplacenton® topically), and three treatment groups (wounds treated with sea cucumber and turmeric extract cream with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% topically). Wound healing parameters were observed daily, namely accelerated wound closure and inflammation reduction. Data were analysed descriptively and tested using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis’s test. Results: The results showed that the wounds closed completely in all treated groups. Healing time in the group receiving treatment (positive control and concentration treatment of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% were 8.3 ± 1.5 days, 10.3 ± 0.6 days, 9.3 ± 0 .6 days, and 8.3 ± 1.5 days, respectively) faster than the healing time of the group that did not receive treatment (negative control was 12.6 ± 0.6 days). Conclusion: This study showed that sea cucumber and turmeric extract cream has the potential and is effective for wound healing and can be used as an alternative for wound treatment.

The assessment of alteration of postmortem RNA expression has forensic significance in estimating postmortem interval. To evaluate wound healing progression and the effect of different postmortem intervals, histopathological changes, immunohistochemical matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression, and long noncoding fatty acid oxidation (lncFAO), RNA expression was assessed in the incised cutaneous wound model. A full-thickness cutaneous wound was inflicted on 75 rats. All 15 rats were sacrificed at different post-infliction intervals (0, 2, 4, 8 and 10 days), and the cutaneous wounds (n = 5) were excised at different postmortem intervals (0, 5, and 24 h after euthanasia). The maximal inflammatory healing stage was detected at day 4 post-infliction, while near complete healing, thick mature collagen deposition was detected at day 10 post-infliction. LncFAO expression was significantly over-expressed with increasing wound age. MMP-9 was detectable on injury day with continuous elevation until 8 days post-wounding, which later decreased. Although histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations within 24 h postmortem did not show any remarkable changes, lncFAO RNA expression showed a significant negative correlation with hours passed since death. The combined use of histopathological changes, immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9, and molecular expression of lncFAO could be appropriate in wound dating verification. Among these factors, lncFAO could be a reliable indicator in postmortem interval estimation.

Suicide, the act or instance of voluntarily and intentionally taking one's own life, is a leading global cause of death. Complex suicide involves the use of more than one method and can be either planned or unplanned. Frequently seen methods include the ingestion of a toxic substance in combination with hanging, the use of firearms with hanging, drowning combined with injuries from knives, and jumping from heights. We present a case of complex suicide in which the victim used hanging and a self-inflicted incision wound on the wrist. Introduction: Pasak bumi is a medicinal plant commonly used as herbal medicine by Indonesian people. This study aims to examine the healing capacity of mice skin incised wounds by using pasak bumi leaves stalks ethanol extract ointment. Materials and Methods: This study used twenty-five male mice Balb/c strains, grouped into five groups, divided into three treatment groups (ointment with 20% extract concentration, ointment with 35% extract concentration, and ointment with 50% extract concentration), a positive control group using Betadine®, and the negative the negative control group using an ointment base. The back of the mouse was slashed 1.0 cm long with a depth of 0.2 cm. Then, the wound was smeared twice a day for 21 consecutive days. Results: The application of 20%, 35%, and 50% of ointment extract had the effect of healing the incised wounds after 21 days just as Betadine®. From the description score of the wound on the twenty-first day, it can be seen that the applied ointment with 35% of extract concentration shows the same healing capacity as Betadine® (p> 0.05), unlike the administration of ointment base (p <0.05). Assessment of incised wound age in skeletal muscles is important because fatal injuries are often complicated with muscle involvement. Transcriptome of injured skeletal muscle along with histopathological and immunohistochemistry staining, were analyzed to explore the biological effect of incised injuries using a mouse incised injury model. An incisional wound was made at the biceps femoris muscle of anesthetized mice, and the muscles were sampled at 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48h post-injury. DNA microarray analysis using RNA extracted from the muscle samples of 12h post-injury identified 3,655 upregulated and 3,583 downregulated genes. Referring to the results of the gene ontology and gene expression pathway analysis, time course expression of five cytokines, namely chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 4 (CCL4), chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 5 (CXCL5), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin- 6 (IL-6) and interleukin-7 (IL-7), were analyzed by quantative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). CXCL5 was the most upregulated gene throughout the post-injury period with higher expression from 6 through 36h post injury. Upregulation of CCL4 and IL-1β was also persisted until 36h post injury. IL-6 mRNA was highly and rapidly expressed at 6h post-injury followed by significant decrease at 12h. Unlike other four cytokines, IL-7 showed slow and steady increasing over time until 48h post-injury. Immunohistochemical staining of post-injury samples showed gradual mild increase of staining intensity proportional to increasing time points especially around the wound edges. The present study highlights the unique dynamics of each cytokine and reflects their roles in the process of muscle wound healing, and suggests the potential of them as a tool for forensic wound age estimation. Background Sharp force injuries and fatalities have been reported to be the most common crimes of violence in several countries, predominantly in those where access to firearms is restricted. Death due to sharp force violence is the most common cause of homicidal deaths in Sweden and in many other countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. However incised wounds are less common in homicide. Objective Method A medico-legal descriptive study conducted on 18 autopsies during 6 months period. Cases were studied according to their age, sex, scene of incident, number of injuries, presence of other types, suggestive manner of injury and anatomical regions affected. Blood sample was taken for alcohol detection then complete classical autopsy was done. Results Incised wound cases were about a third of total sharp wound cases. Males were 5 times more frequently involved than females with an age range 36.4±29.1. Indoor and outdoor scene of incidents was almost equal. Most of them were multiple with mixed types of sharp wounds. Suggestive homicidal manner of death was seen. The neck was the most common anatomical region affected. There was no role of alcohol in causation of such injuries. Conclusion Incised wounds are infrequently encountered in medico-legal autopsy practice. Males seem to be more prone to such injuries with multiple and mixed types in the majority of cases. Homicidal manner was suggested in all cases and neck was the preferable site for the perpetrator. Abstract: Every year many innocent lives are claimed and many more suffer severe life threatening injuries in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh due to accidental injuries glass-coated kite-lines (manja) that are sharp, cutting effect. Abstract: A 29-year-old sheep shearer collapsed after walking across a shearing shed floor, holding his hand over an incised wound to his neck. Attempted resuscitation was unsuccessful. At the death scene fine arterial blood spatter was noted and at autopsy a single incised wound to the neck was observed, the patterned edges of which corresponded to the teeth of the shears. Dissection revealed injury to the underlying jugular vein and the mid portion of the common carotid artery. Death was attributed to blood loss from an incised wound of the left side of the neck. This case demonstrates the rare event of an accidental death related to the actions of a sheep. Although a relatively small animal, review of the circumstances and interviews with those present revealed that sudden and unexpected movement of the sheep during shearing had caused the shearer to lose control of his electrical shears resulting in a lethal incised wound to the neck. The blood spatter pattern at the scene was supportive of both witness descriptions and the findings at autopsy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Death from incised wounds of major vessels may occur during illegal entry of premises. Wounds are often relatively unimpressive having been caused by thin shards of glass. Alcohol and/or drugs have often been taken that have impaired coordination and contributed to a failure to take appropriate action. A 37-year-old man slipped and fell while attempting to enter a house through a window that he had just broken. He was found dead surrounded by a large amount of blood. At autopsy, a single horizontal, deeply incised wound of the anterior neck was present with transection of the internal jugular veins bilaterally and the right common carotid artery. Toxicological studies were negative for alcohol and common drugs. Death was due to exsanguination and air embolism. This case demonstrates that the injuries sustained during such activities may be quite extensive and involve major neck vessels. Alcohol and drug intoxication are not necessarily involved. Abstract: Cases at study comprise 21 sharp force fatalities (9 suicides – 7 m and 2 f; 8 homicides – 5 m and 3 f; 2 accidental deaths – 1 m and 1 f; 2 uncertain cases – 2 m), examined from 1993 to 2002. Suicide age range was 17–75 years, mean 42.4; in seven cases the age was upper 40. Scene of death was at home in six cases, at open place in two, during hospitalisation in one. Incised wounds were pre-eminent in suicides. Homicides showed multiple stab wounds. The two accidents were caused by “glassing”. Uncertain cases were a small stab wound to the chest and an eviration.
