Industrial sectors, pivotal for the economic prosperity of nations, rely heavily on affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly energy sources. Industries like iron and steel, oil refineries, and coal-fired power plants, while instrumental to national economies, are also the most significant contributors to waste gases that contain substantial volumes of carbon monoxide (CO). CO can be converted to a highly efficient and carbon free fuel, hydrogen (H2) through a well-known water gas shift reaction. However, the untapped potential of H2 from waste industrial streams is yet to be explored. This is the first article that investigates the potential of H2 production from industrial waste gases. The available resource (i.e., CO) and its H2 production potential are estimated. The article also provides insights into the principal challenges and potential avenues for long-term adoption. The results showed that 249.14 MTPY of CO are available to produce 17.44 MTPY of H2 annually. This suggests a significant potential for H2 production from waste gases to revolutionize industrial waste management and contribute significantly towards Sustainable Development Goals 7, 9, and 13ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all and taking decisive climate action, respectively.

We designed and constructed a whole-cell biosensor capable of detecting the presence and quantity of carbon monoxide (CO) using the CO regulatory transcription factor. This biosensor utilizes CooA, a CO-sensing transcription regulator that activates the expression of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH), to detect the presence of CO and respond by triggering the expression of a GUS reporter protein (β-glucuronidase). The GUS reporter protein is expressed from a CO-induced CooA-binding promoter (PcooF) by CooA and enables the effective colorimetric detection of CO. An Escherichia coli strain used to validate the biosensor showed growth and GUS activity under anaerobic conditions; this study used the inert gas (Ar) to create anaerobic conditions. The pBRCO biosensor could successfully detect the presence of CO in the headspace. Moreover, the GUS-specific activity of pBRCO according to the CO strength as partial pressure followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics (R2 = 0.98). It was confirmed that the GUS-specific activity of pBRCO increased linearly up to 30.39 kPa (R2 = 0.98), and thus, a quantitative analysis of CO concentration (i.e., partial pressure) was possible.

Control over the orientation of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase on electrode surfaces is demonstrated and designed for other redox enzymes to promote direct electron transfer in bioelectrocatalytic systems.

Summary: Here, we present a protocol for constructing direct electron transfer (DET)-based enzyme-electrodes using gold-binding peptide (GBP). We describe fusion of four GBPs to flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-dependent glucose dehydrogenase gamma-alpha complex (GDHγα), as model oxidoreductase, to generate four GDHγα variants. We then detail the measurements of catalytic and bioelectrochemical properties of these GDHγα variants on electrode together with surface morphology of GDHγα variants immobilized on gold surface. Summary: Oriented enzyme immobilization on electrodes is crucial for interfacial electrical coupling of direct electron transfer (DET)-based enzyme-electrode systems. As inorganic-binding peptides are introduced as molecular binders and enzyme-orienting agents, inorganic-binding peptide-fused enzymes should be designed and constructed to achieve efficient DET. In this study, it is aimed to compare the effects of various gold-binding peptides (GBPs) fused to enzymes on electrocatalytic activity, bioactivity, and material-binding behaviors. Here, GBPs with identical gold-binding properties but different amino acid sequences were fused to the FAD-dependent glucose dehydrogenase gamma-alpha complex (GDHγα) to generate four GDHγα variants. The structural, biochemical, mechanical, and bioelectrochemical properties of these GDHγα variants immobilized on electrode were determined by their fused GBPs. Our results confirmed that the GBP type is vital in the design, construction, and optimization of GBP-fused enzyme-modified electrodes for facile interfacial DET and practical DET-based enzyme-electrode systems.

We report a methodology for enhancing the mass transfer at the anode electrode of sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs), by employing a fabric baffle to create a separate water-layer for installing the anode electrode in sediment. The maximum power in an SMFC with the anode installed in the separate water-layer (SMFC-wFB) was improved by factor of 6.6 compared to an SMFC having the anode embedded in the sediment (SMFC-woFB). The maximum current density in the SMFC-wFB was also 3.9 times higher (220.46 mA/m2) than for the SMFC-woFB. We found that the increased performance in the SMFC-wFB was due to the improved mass transfer rate of organic matter obtained by employing the water-layer during anode installation in the sediment layer. Acetate injection tests revealed that the SMFC-wFB could be applied to natural water bodies in which there is frequent organic contamination, based on the acetate flux from the cathode to the anode.

The bacterial contamination of cell-recycled continuos ethanol fermentation is controlled using sulfite and hydrogen peroxide. Lactic acid bacteria are the main contaminants in ethanol fermentation which reduce the ethanol yield and inhibit yeast growth. Sulfite destroys lactic acid bacteria selectively. Sulfite is effective only in the presence of molecular oxygen. It is more effective in destroying L. casei, in which the peroxide-related enzymes are active. Hydrogen peroxide is effective in case of L. fermentum, which has low peroxidase activity.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 is a gram-negative facultative anaerobe that is used for reducing Mn(IV) and Fe(III) oxides and producing current in microbial fuel cells. The findings have indicated that a few cytochromes have played a role in all the processes but that their degrees of participation in each process are very different.

Purpose: To evaluate the distribution of ureteral stones and to determine their characteristics and expulsion rate based on their location. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed computed tomography (CT) findings of 246 patients who visited our Emergency Department (ED) for renal colic caused by unilateral ureteral stones between January 2013 and April 2014. Histograms were constructed to plot the distribution of stones based on initial CT findings. Data from 144 of the 246 patients who underwent medical expulsive therapy (MET) for 2 weeks were analyzed to evaluate the factors responsible for the stone distribution and expulsion. Results: The upper ureter and ureterovesical junction (UVJ) were 2 peak locations at which stones initially lodged. Stones lodged at the upper ureter and ureteropelvic junction (group A) had a larger longitudinal diameter (4.21 mm vs. 3.56 mm, p=0.004) compared to those lodged at the lower ureter and UVJ (group B). The expulsion rate was 75.6% and 94.9% in groups A and B, respectively. There was no significant difference in the time interval from initiation of renal colic to arrival at the ED between groups A and B (p=0.422). Stone diameter was a significant predictor of MET failure (odds ratio [OR], 1.795; p=0.005) but the initial stone location was not (OR, 0.299; p=0.082). Conclusions: The upper ureter and UVJ are 2 peak sites at which stones lodge. For stone size 10 mm or less, initial stone lodge site is not a significant predictor of MET failure in patients who have no previous history of active stone treatment in the ureter. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in expressions of neuregulin (NRG)1 and erbB2 tyrosine kinase (ErbB2) in bladders of rats with cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced interstitial cystitis (IC). Methods: Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the IC group (n=16) and the control group (n=8). After inducing IC with intraperitoneal CYP injection, expressions of NRG1 and ErbB2 were analyzed using western blotting and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Results: In Western blotting, relative intensities and distributions of both NRG1 and ErbB2 were approximately 1.5- and 3.2- fold higher, respectively, in the IC group than in the control group (mean±standard deviation: 1.42±0.09 vs. 0.93±0.15 and 0.93±0.16 vs. 0.29±0.08, P<0.05). In the rat bladder samples, mRNA expression levels of NRG1 and ErbB2 were higher in the IC group than in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions: Our study has demonstrated significant changes in mRNA expression and immunoreactivity of NRG1 and ErbB2 receptors in the urinary bladder after CYP-induced IC. These results suggest that the up-regulated NRG1 may play a role in inducing an overactive bladder and promoting regeneration in the inflammatory bladder with CYP-induced IC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microwave (MW) radiation was developed to remove and recover ammonia nitrogen in the real swine wastewater. The effect of operating parameters of MW radiation such as initial pH, power, radiation time, aeration, and stirring for removal ammonia nitrogen in swine wastewater was determined. The pH, radiation time, and power were significantly influenced on the removal of ammonia nitrogen, and aeration and stirring showed relatively minor effect on the removal of ammonia nitrogen. Optimum condition was achieved to retrieve the nitrogen efficiently at pH 11, 700 W for 5 min in MW radiation process. Through this process, 83.1% of ammonia nitrogen concentration was reduced in swine wastewater and also 82.6% of ammonia nitrogen was recovered as ammonium sulfate at the optimized condition. The high ammonia removal and recovery efficiency of the MW radiation method indicated that MW radiation was an effective technique to remove and recover ammonia nitrogen in the swine wastewater. Purpose: In this retrospective study, we analyzed the outcomes of prostate cancer patients treated with the CyberKnife radiotherapy system (Accuray). Materials and Methods: Between 2007 and 2010, 31 patients were treated for prostate cancer by use of the CyberKnife radiotherapy system. After excluding six patients who were lost to follow-up, data for the remaining 25 patients were analyzed. Patients were divided into the CyberKnife monotherapy group and a postexternal beam radiotherapy boost group. Clinicopathologic features and treatment outcomes were compared between the groups. The primary endpoint was biochemical recurrence-free survival period based on the Phoenix definition. Toxicities were evaluated by using the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group scoring criteria. Results: Of 25 patients, 17 (68%) and 8 (32%) were classified in the monotherapy and boost groups, respectively. With a median follow-up of 29.3 months, most of the toxicities were grade 1 or 2 except for one patient in the boost group who experienced late grade 3 gastrointestinal toxicity. The overall biochemical recurrence rate was 20% (5/25) and the median time to biochemical recurrence was 51.9 months. None of the patients with low or intermediate risk had experienced biochemical recurrence during follow-up. Among D'Amico high-risk populations, 16.7% (1/6) in the monotherapy group and 50.0% (4/8) in the boost group experienced biochemical recurrence. Conclusions: Our data support that prostate cancer treatment by use of the CyberKnife radiotherapy system is feasible. The procedure can be a viable option for managing prostate cancer either in a monotherapy setting or as a boost after conventional radiotherapy regardless of the patient's risk stratification. Monitoring reverse osmosis (RO) membrane conditions is an important task because it helps reduce the operation and maintenance cost in the RO membrane desalination systems by achieving long membrane lifetime and energy saving. As biological interactions between the membrane itself and microorganism cause the rapid degradation of membrane performance, it is crucial to identify and quantify potential biofoulants that are sensitive to each specific RO membrane. This study proposed a biofouling prediction method that indirectly quantifies the degree of biofouling by comparing the fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) of foulants sampled on the fully fouled RO membrane and those of brine samples from currently operating RO system. The experiment showed that the similarity distance measured from the comparison between the two fluorescence EEMs tends to increase when brine samples were secured from relatively clean RO membranes. Purpose: To compare the clinical therapeutic efficacy of finasteride and dutasteride as 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5-ARI) in the medical treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia. Materials and Methods: From July 2007 to July 2010, 354 benign prostatic hyperplasia patients with combination medication: alpha blocker plus 5-ARI were enrolled. These patients were classified into a finasteride medication group (F group) and dutasteride medication group (D group) retrospectively. We initially measured the total prostate volume (TPV), prostate specific antigen (PSA), International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life score (QoL), maximal flow rate (Qmax), and post-void residual urine (PVR). After at least twelve months of medication, we rechecked these clinical parameters and during medication, side effects related to medication were also recorded. Results: The F group (n=129) and D group (n=225) showed no differences in baseline characteristics for age, TPV, IPSS, QoL scores, or PSA. After medication, decreases in TPV were relatively higher in the D group than the F group (28.2% vs 20.5%). In addition, the decrease in PSA (43.6% vs 39.2%) and IPSS score (4.6 vs 3.5) were also higher in the D group. There were no significant differences in QoL score, Qmax, PVR change, or side effects between the two groups. Conclusions: Dutasteride showed greater efficacy in reduction of TPV and PSA and in symptomatic improvement by IPSS score than finasteride. We report the electrochemical characterization and microbial community analysis of closed circuit microbial fuel cells (CC-MFCs) and open circuit (OC) cells continuously fed with propionate as substrate. Differences in power output between MFCs correlated with their polarization behavior, which is related to the maturation of the anodophilic communities. The microbial communities residing in the biofilm growing on the electrode, biofouled cation-exchange membrane and anodic chamber liquor of OC-and CC-MFCs were characterized by restriction fragment length polymorphism screening of 16S rRNA gene clone libraries. The results show that the CC-MFC anode was enriched in several microorganisms related to known electrochemically active and dissimilatory Fe(III) reducing bacteria, mostly from the Geobacter spp., to the detriment of Bacteroidetes abundant in the OC-MFC anode. The results also evidenced the lack of a specific pelagic community in the liquor sample. The biofilm growing on the cation-exchange membrane of the CC-MFC was found to be composed of a low-diversity community dominated by two microaerophilic species of the Achromobacter and Azovibrio genus. We carried out a nationwide epidemiological study to evaluate the prevalence and effect of varicoceles on testicular volume in South Korean adolescents. We also investigated the correlation between varicoceles and body mass index (BMI). In this prospective study, physical examinations were carried out to assess the presence and severity of varicoceles in middle school boys from six regions of South Korea. Testicular volume, height and weight of all boys were measured. The prevalence of varicoceles was assessed. The associations between age, testicular volume, BMI, and the presence and severity of varicoceles were examined. A total of 1938 boys with a mean age of 14.1 years (range 13-16 years) were screened. A varicocele was found on the left side in 295 (15.2%) boys and on the right side in 8 (0.4%) boys. Bilateral varicoceles were found in 17 (0.9%) individuals. Of the subjects with a left varicocele, 151 (51.2%), 80 (27.1%) and 64 (25.1%) boys had a grade 1, 2 or 3 varicocele, respectively. The prevalence of varicoceles did not increase with age. The proportion of boys with testicular size discrepancies increased with the severity of the varicocele. After adjusting for age, BMI had a negative correlation with the presence of varicoceles. The prevalence of varicoceles in South Korean middle school boys is 16.5%. The presence of varicoceles seems to have a negative effect on testicular growth. Propionate was used as fuel to enrich an electrochemically-active microbial consortium in a microbial fuel cell, and the bacterial consortium was analyzed by culture-independent methods including denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of the 16S rDNA, and by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). MFCs fed with propionate produced a current of 4.88 ± 0.1 mA stably on 100 mg propionate/l as COD within 3 weeks of the enrichment. When the MFCs were fed with H2-saturated fuel containing propionate, the current dropped to 3.82 ± 0.07 mA. The maximum current generated was up to 8.8 mA when MFCs were fed with 200 mg propionate/l as COD. The DGGE of 16S rDNA showed that propionate-enriched MFCs have a different bacterial population from that enriched with acetate and from the inoculum used for enrichment. Background: Worldwide restrictions in animal use for research have driven efforts to develop alternative methods. Objective: The study aimed to test the efficacy of the macrophage inflammatory protein-1β (MIP-1β) assay for testing chemicals’ skin-sensitizing capacity. Methods: The assay was performed using 9 chemicals judged to be sensitizing and 7 non-sensitizing by the standard in vivo assays. THP-1 cells were cultured in the presence or absence of 4 doses, 0.01x, 0.1x, 0.5x, or 1x IC50 (50% inhibitory concentration for THP-1 cell proliferation) of these chemicals for 24 hr, and the MIP-1β level in the supernatants was determined. Skin sensitization by the test chemicals was determined by MIP-1β production rates. The MIP-1β production rate was expressed as the relative increase in MIP-1β production in response to chemical treatment compared with vehicle treatment. Results and Conclusion: When the threshold MIP-1β production rate used was 100% or 105% of dimethyl sulfoxide, all the sensitizing chemicals tested (dinitrochlorobenzene, hexyl cinnamic aldehyde, eugenol, hydroquinone, dinitrofluorobenzene, benzocaine, nickel, chromium, and 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) were positive, and all the non-sensitizing chemicals (methyl salicylate, benzalkonium chloride, lactic acid, isopropanol, and salicylic acid), with the exception of sodium lauryl sulfate, were negative for MIP-1β production. A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that converts chemical energy into electricity through the catalytic activities of microorganisms. Although there is great potential of MFCs as an alternative energy source, novel wastewater treatment process, and biosensor for oxygen and pollutants, extensive optimization is required to exploit the maximum microbial potential. Studies were made on the composition of the growth medium to increase the cell concentration in a cell-recycled continuous culture ( Eubacterium limosum KIST612) with carbon monoxide as a sole energy source using phosphate-buffered basal medium (PBBM) and modified PBBM. One of major limiting factors in PBBM might be nitrogen during the high cell density culture. This limitation could be overcome by increasing of inorganic nitrogen or yeast extract concentration in the medium. Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 produced electrically conductive pi-lus-like appendages called bacterial nanowires in direct response to electron-acceptor limitation. Mutants deficient in genes for c-type decaheme cytochromes MtrC and OmcA, and those that lacked a functional Type II secretion pathway displayed nanowires that were poorly conductive. These mutants were also deficient in their ability to reduce hydrous ferric oxide and in their ability to generate current in a microbial fuel cell. Nanowires produced by the oxygenic phototrophic cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC6803 and the thermophUic, fermentative bacterium Pelotomaculum thermopropionicum reveal that electrically conductive append-ages are not exclusive to dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria and may, in fact, represent a common bacterial strategy for efficient electron transfer and energy distribution. Chromium hydroxide green [Cr2O(OH)4] and chromium oxide green (Cr2O3) are colouring agents for use in cosmetic products. These colourants may contain chromium (VI), which cause skin allergies through percutaneous adsorption on the skin. Eye shadow is a representative cosmetic product in which significant colourants are used. We analysed the chromium (VI) in the eye shadows by ion chromatography and post column derivatization. We optimize conditions of chromium (VI) analysis in eye shadows. During the pretreatment procedure, there are no exchange of chromium (III) to chromium (VI). This method has a limit of quantification for chromium (VI) of 1.0 μg l−1, recovery rate of 100 ± 3% and analysis time less than 10 min. This result is 300 times more sensitive than the high-performance liquid chromatography method. We applied the optimized method to analyse 22 eye shadows and 6 colouring agents. 2 out of 22 of the products contained more than 5 mg l−1. In our previous work, 5 mg l−1 of Cr represented a threshold level. There was much more Cr(VI) in the colouring agents. The Cr(VI) in one of the colouring agents was 97.6 mg l−1. Background Genistein increases CPT1A, a rate-limiting enzyme in the β-oxidation pathway, enzyme activity by increasing CPT1A transcription in HepG2 cells and, consequently, suppresses high fat induced obesity in C57BL/6J mice. Genistein and daidzein are the most abundant isoflavones in soy. Aim of study To investigate the effect of co-treatment of genistein and L-carnitine on CPT1A enzyme activity and to determine whether daidzein also increases CPT1A activity and to establish a cell line that can be used to screen chemicals to regulate CPT1A transcription. Methods The enzyme activities of CPT1A were determined after HepG2 cells were incubated with 10 µM genistein or 10 µM daidzein or 1 mM L-carnitine or in combination with 10 µM genistein and 1 mM L-carnitine or in combination with 10 µM daidzein and 1 mM L-carnitine. The mRNA expression levels of CPT1A were determined by real time PCR method after HepG2 cells were incubated with 10 µM genistein or 10 µM daidzein. A suggested CPT1A promoter region was cloned from human genomic DNA and the CPT1A promoter-luciferase reporter gene construct was made, and the promoter-reporter gene construct was transfected into human hepatoma cell line Huh7. Results The enzyme activity of CPT1A was at least 2.3-fold higher in L-carnitine and genistein co-treated HepG2 cells than either single-agent treated cells. Daidzein also significantly increased the mRNA expression of CPT1A as well as the enzyme activity of CPT1A. A stable Huh7 cell line,which was selected after Huh7 cells were transfected with CPT1A promoter luciferase reporter gene construct, was characterized by confirming that luciferase activity of the cell line can be regulated by genistein and daidzein as well as clofibrate, a well-known CPT1A mRNA up-regulating drug. Conclusions Genistein and daidzein can up-regulate CPT1A enzyme activity through up-regulation of CPT1A transcription. Co-treatment of L-carnitine and genistein additively increases CPT1A enzyme activity in HepG2 cells. In this study, two kaempferol were separated from the green tea seed. Green tea seed extract hydrolysate comprising kaempferol by contact cell based on a metabolic method applying a stable cell line on 5α-reductase, shows a good effect on cell lines.

This study presents a method to produce monodisperse chloromethyl-functionalized macroporous poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) polymer particles by seeded polymerization in aqueous media. We observed that the molecular structure of polystyrene seed particles, the composition of the secondary monomer mixtures, and the type of solvents were very important factors that determine the morphology and porosity of the final particles. This study proposes that the molecular chemistry of polystyrene seed polymers, increasing molecular weight or crosslinking, is another factor that can control the porosity of the final particles. Also, the selection of a poor solvent was effective in forming the larger surface area. In this study, it was confirmed that the chloromethyl groups introduced on the surface of porous particles were quantified chemically and their effective incorporation had a close relationship with the surface area. In this study, a different UV (ultra-violet) ray absorption system is presented in which butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDM, a model UV-A absorbent, 320–400 nm) is stabilized in phase-controlled poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres. The photochemistry of BMDM in the microspheres was investigated considering its phase characteristics therein. Analysis by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction showed that the BMDM in the microspheres was present in a non-crystalline state. The phase control of BMDM in the polymer microspheres has an excellent ability to protect against UV-A, whilst maintaining its photostability and thermal stability. The results obtained in this study illustrate well that the phase control of the UV absorbents in polymer microspheres is another key factor that determines their photochemistry and photostability in the final formulations. The response of Desulfovibrio vulgaris to Cu(II) and Hg(II) was characterized. Both metals increased the lag phase, and Cu(II) reduced cell yield at concentrations as low as 50 μM. mRNA expression was analyzed using random arbitrarily primed PCR, differential display, and quantitative PCR. Both Cu(II) and Hg(II) (50 μM) caused upregulation of mRNA expression for an ATP binding protein (ORF2004) and an ATPase (ORF856) with four- to sixfold increases for Hg(II) and 1.4- to 3-fold increases with Cu(II). Mediator-less microbial fuel cells (MFC) enriched with oligotrophic microbes were optimized through enhancement of cathode reaction and lowering O2 diffusion into the anode compartment as a low BOD sensor. The optimization of the MFC has greatly improved the maximum current and coulomb yield. A microbial fuel cell type of biosensor was used to determine the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of wastewater. The biosensor gave a good correlation between the BOD value and the coulomb produced. Nowadays there are many sun-protection cosmetics incorporating organic or inorganic UV filters as active ingredients. Chemically stable inorganic sunscreen agents, usually metal oxides, are widely employed in high-SPF (sun protection factor) products. Titanium dioxide is one of the most frequently used inorganic UV filters. It has been used as a pigment for a long period of cosmetic history. With the development of micronization techniques, it has become possible to incorporate titanium dioxide in sunscreen formulations without the previous whitening effect, and hence its use in cosmetics has become an important research topic. However, there are very few works related to quantitation of titanium dioxide in sunscreen products. In this research, we analysed the amounts of titanium dioxide in sunscreen cosmetics by adapting redox titration, reduction of Ti(IV) to Ti(III), and reoxidation to Ti(IV). After calcification of other organic ingredients of cosmetics, titanium dioxide is dissolved by hot sulfuric acid. The dissolved Ti(IV) is reduced to Ti(III) by adding metallic aluminum. The reduced Ti(III) is titrated against a standard oxidizing agent, Fe(III) (ammonium iron(III) sulfate), with potassium thiocyanate as an indicator. In order to test the accuracy and applicability of the proposed method, we analysed the amounts of titanium dioxide in four types of sunscreen cosmetics, namely cream, make-up base, foundation, and powder, after adding known amounts of titanium dioxide (1 ~ 25 w/w%). The percentages of titanium dioxide recovered in the four types of formulations were in the range between 96% and 105%. We also analysed seven commercial cosmetic products labelled with titanium dioxide as an ingredient and compared the results with those obtained from ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry), one of the most powerful atomic analysis techniques. The results showed that the titrated amounts were well in accord with the analyzed amounts of titanium dioxide by ICP-AES. Although instrument-based analytical methods, namely ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry) and ICP-AES, are best for the analysis of titanium, it is difficult for small cosmetic companies to install such instruments because of their high cost. Purpose Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) exhibits variable lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of LUTS and the efficacy of an anticholinergic agent in young and middle-aged CP/CPPS patients. Methods Ninety-six men with CP/CPPS were randomly assigned in a single-blind fashion and received either ciprofloxacin (group 1, 49 patients) or ciprofloxacin and solifenacin (5 mg/day; group 2, 47 patients) for 8 weeks. The National Institutes of Health chronic prostatitis symptom index (NIH-CPSI), the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) were used to grade the patients' symptoms and the quality of life impact at the start of the study, and at 4 and 8 weeks from the initiation of the study. Results There was no significant difference between groups 1 and 2 with respect to age, duration of disease, or sub-domains of the IPSS, NIH-CPSI, or IIEF-5 at baseline. Of these patients, 67.4% had LUTS. Statistically significant differences were determined via the NIH-CPSI for total score and the pain and urinary domain scores. Statistically significant differences were determined via the IPSS for total score and the storage domain score. The total score of the IIEF-5 increased, but the change was not significant. There was no statistically significant difference in residual urine. Conclusions Many CP/CPPS patients had LUTS. Solifenacin in CP/CPPS demonstrated improvements in the NIH-CPSI and the IPSS total score and storage score. Storage factors significantly improved via the NIH-CPSI and IPSS assessments in the solifenacin treatment group.

Purpose To analyze the baseline clinical factors and medication treatment strategy used in cases with medication treatment failure of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods From January 2006 to December 2009, 677 BPH patients with at least 3 months of treatment with medication were enrolled. We analyzed clinical factors by medication failure (n=161) versus maintenance (n=516), by prostate size (less than 30 g, n=231; 30 to 50 g, n=244; greater than 50 g, n=202), and by prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels (less than 1.4 ng/mL, n=324; more than 1.4 ng/mL, n=353). Results Age, combination medication rate, PSA, and prostate volume were statistically different between the medication treatment failure and maintenance groups. By prostate size, the PSA and medication failure rates were relatively higher and the medication period was shorter in patients with a prostate size of more than 30 g. The combination medication rate was higher in patients with a prostate size of more than 50 g. The medication failure rate and prostate volume were higher in patients with a PSA level of more than 1.4 ng/mL. However, the combination treatment rate was not significantly different in patients with a PSA level lower than 1.4 ng/mL. Suggestive cutoffs for combination medication are a prostate volume of 34 g and PSA level of 1.9 ng/mL. Conclusions The clinical factors associated with medication failure were age, treatment type, and prostate volume. Combination therapy should be considered more in Korea in patients with a PSA level higher than 1.4 ng/mL and a prostate volume of between 30 and 50 g to prevent medication failure.

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) change in patients with localized prostate cancer after radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) and examine the efficacy of anticholinergic drugs to treat patients suffering from storage symptoms. Materials and Methods: Among 50 patients who underwent RRP for prostate cancer, 40 who did not undergo additional treatment that might affect their urination pattern were included in the analysis. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life (QoL) score, and uroflowmetry were analyzed prior to RRP and 12 months after RRP. Twelve months after RRP, patients desiring improvement of storage symptoms were administered anticholinergic drugs for 6 months; the effects of such treatments were analyzed 3 and 6 months later. Results: Preoperatively and at 12 months after surgery, the mean IPSS for patients were 10.9 ± 6.7 and 9.2 ± 5.7, respectively. The mean IPSS for patients desiring improvement of storage symptoms before and after administration of medication were 9.7 ± 5.9 and 9.0 ± 4.4, respectively. In particular, the mean storage symptom composites improved significantly after administration of medication. There were no statistically significant differences in frequency between baseline and 3-month, but frequency was improved significantly after 6 months. Urgency and nocturia were improved significantly after 3 months. Conclusion: In patients undergoing RRP, urinary symptoms change over time, with worsening storage symptoms. Our results suggest that, in patients who had discomfort with storage symptoms after RRP, anticholinergic drugs significantly improved symptoms and QoL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eubacterium limosum KIST612 is one of the few acetogens that can produce butyrate from carbon monoxide. We have used a genome-guided analysis to delineate the path of butyrate formation, the enzymes involved, and the potential coupling to ATP synthesis. Oxidation of CO is catalyzed by the acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA) synthase/CO dehydrogenase and coupled to the reduction of ferredoxin. Oxidation of reduced ferredoxin is catalyzed by the Rnf complex and Na+ dependent. Consistent with the finding of a Na+-dependent Rnf complex is the presence of a conserved Na+-binding motif in the c subunit of the ATP synthase. Butyrate formation is from acetyl-CoA via acetoacetyl-CoA, hydroxybutyryl-CoA, crotonyl-CoA, and butyryl-CoA and is consistent with the finding of a gene cluster that encodes the enzymes for this pathway. The activity of the butyryl-CoA dehydrogenase was demonstrated. Reduction of crotonyl-CoA to butyryl-CoA with NADH as the reductant was coupled to reduction of ferredoxin. We postulate that the butyryl-CoA dehydrogenase uses flavin-based electron bifurcation to reduce ferredoxin, which is consistent with the finding of etfA and etfB genes next to it. The overall ATP yield was calculated and is significantly higher than the one obtained with H2 + CO2. The energetic benefit may be one reason that butyrate is formed only from CO but not from H2 + CO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
