Background With the advent of cranial orthoses as therapeutic medical devices for the treatment of severe positional head deformities in Japan, an increasing number of patients are being treated with them. However, assessing the effectiveness of a treatment is often difficult due to the use of different metrics. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cranial orthoses for deformational plagiocephaly using two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) evaluation metrics.

In peanut cultivation in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, Japan, it is essential to complete the harvest by early October to prevent frost damage. Therefore, cultivation methods that can accelerate the flowering period are necessary. It is understood that planting density can influence the timing of flowering, with crops often flowering earlier at higher densities. This study aimed to investigate whether growing peanuts at higher densities could advance the flowering period and, consequently, enhance yield. The Japanese peanut variety, Tachimasari, was cultivated in 2022 and 2023 at a conventional planting density of 5.8 plant m−2 (D5.8) and at density conditions of 8.7 plant m−2 (D8.7) and 11.6 plant m−2 (D11.6). The D8.7 and D11.6 plants reached the peak of flowering 2.8 and 5.1 days earlier, respectively, and the end of flowering 3.7 and 8.0 days earlier than the D5.8 plants. Although the total number of flowers was higher in D5.8, pod fertility was greater in D8.7 and D11.6, where plants were able to reduce the occurrence of ineffective flowers and immature pods. Consequently, higher seed yields were observed in D8.7 (2709 kg ha−1) and D11.6 (2754 kg ha−1), where lower individual productivity was offset by higher planting densities, compared to the conventional density condition of D5.8 (2169 kg ha−1).

Continuous intake of allergenic food is a safe and efficient treatment strategy for patients with a prolonged course of acute food protein–induced enterocolitis syndrome. The initial dose, dose escalation rate, and starting age for continuous allergenic food intake need further clarification.

Background: We aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with standardized house dust mite (HDM) extract for allergic rhinitis. Methods: Participants with allergic rhinitis selected their treatment between HDM SCIT or HDM SLIT, according to their wishes. We prospectively followed symptoms of allergic rhinitis using the allergic rhinitis symptom medication score (ARSMS), along with adverse reactions, during the dose escalation and maintenance phases for two years. We compared the outcomes between propensity score-matched groups to adjust the confounding factors. Results: After propensity score matching, 88 patients in the HDM SCIT (n = 44) and HDM SLIT groups (n = 44) remained for analysis. Diaphragmatic reconstruction is required for extensive diaphragmatic defects associated with tumor resection. Methods using artificial mesh and autologous tissues, such as pedicled flaps, have been reported predominantly for diaphragmatic reconstruction. We present the case of a 61-year-old woman who presented with a 14 × 13 × 12 cm tumor in the abdominal cavity of the upper left abdomen on computed tomography. The diaphragm defect measuring 12 × 7 cm that occurred during excision of the malignant tumor was reconstructed using the rectus abdominis muscle and fascial flap. The flap has vertical and horizontal vascular axes; therefore, blood flow is stable. It also has the advantage of increasing the range of motion and reducing twisting of the vascular pedicles. Fascial flap does not require processing such as thinning and can be used during suture fixation. This procedure, which has rarely been reported so far, has many advantages and may be a useful option for diaphragm reconstruction.

Abstract Objective We aimed to compare the changes in SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibody titres based on age group and sex using paired blood sampling after vaccination in association with the presence of nucleocapsid protein antibody. Methods All participants were healthcare workers at Yao Municipal Hospital in Osaka who voluntarily provided peripheral blood samples (n = 636, men/women 151/485, mean age 45 years). We investigated the serial changes in SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibody titres at 1 and 7 months after the second vaccination regarding their relationship with sex and age group. At 7 months, we also examined anti-nucleocapsid assays. Antibody titres were shown as logarithmic values and the differences were assessed using a paired or unpaired student’s t-test as appropriate. Results Among participants younger than 30 years, the antibody titres of spike protein were significantly higher in women one (p = 0.005) and seven (p = 0.038) months after vaccination. However, among those aged 30–49 years, the antibody titres were not different between the sexes at either follow-up time point. In contrast, among those aged 50–59 years, between-sex differences in antibody titres were observed only at 7 months, which was associated with a significant reduction in men. A significant negative correlation was observed between the antibody titres for spike protein at both time points in participants with positive nucleocapsid protein antibody at 7 months (r = − 0.467, p = 0.043), although a significant positive correlation was observed in those with negative results (r = 0.645, p

Recent reports have described several cases of double muscle transfers to restore natural, symmetrical smiles in patients with long-standing facial paralysis. However, these complex procedures sometimes result in cheek bulkiness owing to the double muscle transfer. We present the case of a 67-year-old woman with long-standing facial paralysis, who underwent two-stage facial reanimation using two superficial subslips of the serratus anterior muscle innervated by the masseteric and contralateral facial nerves via a sural nerve graft. Each muscle subslip was transferred to the upper lip and oral commissures, which were oriented in different directions. Furthermore, a horizontal fascia lata graft was added at the lower lip to prevent deformities such as lower lip elongation and deviation. Voluntary contraction was noted at roughly 4 months, and a spontaneous smile without biting was noted 8 months postoperatively. At 18 months after surgery, the patient demonstrated a spontaneous symmetrical smile with adequate excursion of the lower lip, upper lip, and oral commissure, without cheek bulkiness. Dual-innervated muscle transfer using two multivector superficial subslips of the serratus anterior muscle may be a good option for long-standing facial paralysis, as it can achieve a symmetrical smile that can be performed voluntarily and spontaneously.

Background There are currently no guidelines for the postoperative wound management of the hard-palate donor site in cases involving mucosal harvesting. This study describes our experiences with the use of an artificial dermis for early epithelialization and transparent plate fixation in cases involving hard-palate mucosal harvesting. Methods A transparent palatal plate was custom-fabricated using a thermoplastic resin board. After mucosal harvesting, an alginic acid-containing wound dressing (Sorbsan) was applied to the donor site, which was then covered with the plate. After confirming hemostasis, the dressing was changed to artificial dermis a few days later, and the plate was fixed to the artificial dermis. The size of the mucosal defect ranged from 8×25 to 20×40 mm. Results Plate fixation was adequate, with no postoperative slippage or infection of the artificial dermis. There was no pain at the harvest site, but a slight sense of incongruity during eating was reported. Although the fabrication and application of the palatal plate required extra steps before and after harvesting, the combination of the artificial dermis and palatal plate was found to be very useful for protecting the mucosal harvest site, and resulted in decreased pain and earlier epithelialization. Conclusions The combination of artificial dermis and a transparent palatal plate for wound management at the hard-palate mucosal donor site resolved some of the limitations of conventional methods.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disease of unknown etiology and can lead to inflammation and cancer. Whey proteins contain many bioactive peptides with potential health benefits against IBD. We investigated the effect of low-temperature-processed whey protein concentrate (LWPC) on the suppression of IBD by using a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis model in BALB/c mice. Oral intake of LWPC resulted in improved recovery of body weight in mice. Histological analysis showed that the epithelium cells of LWPC-treated mice were healthier and that lymphocyte infiltration was reduced. The increase in mucin due to the LWPC also reflected reduced inflammation in the colon. Transcriptome analysis of the colon by DNA microarrays revealed marked downregulation of genes related to immune responses in LWPC-fed mice. In particular, the expression of interferon gamma receptor 2 (Ifngr2) and guanylate-binding proteins (GBPs) was increased by DSS treatment and decreased in LWPC-fed mice. These findings suggest that LWPCs suppress DSS-induced inflammation in the colon by suppressing the signaling of these cytokines. Our findings suggest that LWPCs would be an effective food resource for suppressing IBD symptoms.

The soft X-ray photoelectron momentum microscopy (PMM) experimental station at the UVSOR Synchrotron Facility has been recently upgraded by additionally guiding vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light in a normal-incidence configuration. PMM offers a very powerful tool for comprehensive electronic structure analyses in real and momentum spaces. In this work, a VUV beam with variable polarization in the normal-incidence geometry was obtained at the same sample position as the soft X-ray beam from BL6U by branching the VUV beamline BL7U. The valence electronic structure of the Au(111) surface was measured using horizontal and vertical linearly polarized (s-polarized) light excitations from BL7U in addition to horizontal linearly polarized (p-polarized) light excitations from BL6U. Such highly symmetric photoemission geometry with normal incidence offers direct access to atomic orbital information via photon polarization-dependent transition-matrix-element analysis. As Au(001) surfaces exhibit a quasi-one-dimensional corrugated structure, Hex-Au(001), its periodicity was predicted to change the electronic structure of graphene when graphene was grown on this surface. Furthermore, the hybridization between graphene and Au is known to introduce bandgap and spin polarization into graphene. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation of graphene on a Hex-Au(001) surface. A bandgap of 0.2 eV in the graphene Dirac cone was observed at the crossing point of the graphene Dirac cone and Au 6sp bands, indicating that the origin of the bandgap formation was the hybridization between the graphene Dirac cone and Au 6sp band. To process ingots of FeGa alloy single crystals into wafers, Fe17% Ga alloy crystals were cut using multi-wire sawing or electric discharging and rolling. Further, their properties of magnetization and magnetostriction were analyzed using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was observed that the magnetization and magnetostriction curves changed with increasing rolling reduction. Although magnetization was negligibly affected by deformation, the shape of the magnetostriction curve of the as-grown crystal could be modified by a slight reduction in rolling or a slight plastic deformation. EBSD results show that rolling introduced dislocations to form heterogeneous dislocation cell walls and decreased the surface roughness of the wafers. The pole figures obtained by XRD indicate that the samples were single crystals; however, the crystal orientation was different from the ideal orientation after rolling. Residual stress measurements using the cos ¡ method revealed that compressive and tensile stresses remained in the polycrystalline surface layers of the samples cut by multiwire sawing and electric discharging, respectively. Moreover, the stresses were affected by the tensile strains or magnetic fields when the residual stresses were relatively small in the sample. Aluminum (Al) is the third most abundant element in the earth's crust. However, because of its specific chemical properties, Al is not essential for life, and it exerts various adverse effects on plants, animals, and humans. In particular, Al is a widely recognized neurotoxin. The association between Al and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease dementia in the Kii Peninsula and Guam has been suspected. However, controversy has persisted for several decades. Based on recent epidemiological, analytical, and toxicological studies, we review the detailed characteristics of Al neurotoxicity and revisit its link to Alzheimer's disease and other diseases. Osteoporosis and sarcopenia are common comorbid diseases, yet their shared mechanisms are largely unknown. We found that genetic variation near FAM210A was associated, through large genome-wide association studies, with fracture, bone mineral density (BMD), and appendicular and whole body lean mass, in humans. In mice, Fam210a was expressed in muscle mitochondria and cytoplasm, as well as in heart and brain, but not in bone. Grip strength and limb lean mass were reduced in tamoxifen-inducible Fam210a homozygous global knockout mice (TFam210a-/-), and in tamoxifen-inducible Fam210 skeletal muscle cell-specific knockout mice (TFam210aMus-/-). Decreased BMD, bone biomechanical strength, and bone formation, and elevated osteoclast activity with microarchitectural deterioration of trabecular and cortical bones, were observed in TFam210a-/- mice. BMD of male TFam210aMus-/- mice was also reduced, and osteoclast numbers and surface in TFam210aMus-/- mice increased. Microarray analysis of muscle cells from TFam210aMus-/- mice identified candidate musculoskeletal modulators. FAM210A, a novel gene, therefore has a crucial role in regulating bone structure and function, and may impact osteoporosis through a biological pathway involving muscle as well as through other mechanisms. Bone and glucose metabolism are closely associated with each other. Both osteoblast and osteoclast functions are important for the action of osteocalcin, which plays pivotal roles as an endocrine hormone regulating glucose metabolism. However, it is unknown whether osteocytes are involved in the interaction between bone and glucose metabolism. We used MLO-Y4-A2, a murine long bone-derived osteocytic cell line, to investigate effects of glucose uptake inhibition on expressions of osteocalcin and bone-remodeling modulators in osteocytes. We found that glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) is expressed in MLO-Y4-A2 cells and that treatment with phloretin, a GLUT inhibitor, significantly inhibited glucose uptake. Real-time PCR and Western blot showed that phloretin significantly and dose-dependently decreased the expressions of RANKL and osteocalcin, whereas osteoprotegerin or sclerostin was not affected. Moreover, phloretin activated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an intracellular energy sensor. Coincubation of ara-A, an AMPK inhibitor, with phloretin canceled the phloretin-induced decrease in osteocalcin expression, but not RANKL. In contrast, phloretin suppressed phosphorylation of ERK1/2, JNK, and p38 MAPK, and treatments with the p38 inhibitor SB203580 and the MEK inhibitor PD98059, but not the JNK inhibitor SP600125, significantly decreased expressions of RANKL and osteocalcin. These results indicate that glucose uptake by GLUT1 is required for RANKL and osteocalcin expressions in osteocytes, and that inhibition of glucose uptake decreases their expressions through AMPK, ERK1/2, and p38 MAPK pathways. These findings suggest that lowering glucose uptake into osteocytes may contribute to maintain blood glucose levels by decreasing osteocalcin expression and RANKL-induced bone resorption. A 13-year-old girl was admitted for persistent thigh pain and remittent fever and was diagnosed as having juvenile polymyositis. Although the initial treatment with 2 cycles of methylprednisolone pulse therapy failed to achieve full remission, the second-line treatment with intravenous cyclophosphamide pulse therapy was eff ective. Anti-OJ antibody, which is one of anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (ARS) antibodies and is rare in adult polymyositis, was detected. Zinc (Zn), an essential trace element, is secreted by synaptic vesicles during neuronal excitation and plays several critical roles in neuronal information processing. However, excess Zn ion (Zn2+) is neurotoxic and has a causative role in the pathogenesis of vascular dementia. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanism of Zn2+-induced neurotoxicity by using immortalized hypothalamic neurons (GT1-7 cells), which are more vulnerable than other neuronal cells to Zn2+. We examined the effects of other metal ions on the Zn2+-induced neurotoxicity in these cells and found that sub-lethal concentrations of copper ion (Cu2+) markedly exacerbated Zn2+-induced neurotoxicity. The co-administration of Cu2+ and Zn2+ also significantly increased the expression of genes related to the endoplasmic reticulum's stress response, including CHOP, GADD34, and ATF4. Similar to Zn2+, Cu2+ is stored in presynaptic vesicles and secreted during neuronal excitation. Thus, based on our results, we hypothesize here that Cu2+ interacts with Zn2+ in the synapse to synergistically promote neuronal death and significantly influence the pathogenesis of vascular dementia. Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD) develops in association with systemic as well as central nervous system (CNS) viral or bacterial infections. AESD is most often noted with influenza or human herpesvirus 6 infection in previously healthy infants. However, AESD has also been reported in an infant with developmental retardation and in a mentally and motor-disabled adolescent. Here, we report the case of a 4-year-old female with significant development delay due to spinal muscular atrophy, who developed AESD during Streptococcus sanguinis sepsis with no apparent CNS infection. Although the patient had extremely high serum procalcitonin (45.84 ng/mL, reference; <0.4) on admission indicating a poor prognosis, she was successfully managed for sepsis and AESD. The present study investigated the effects of intrathecal administration of ProTx-II (tarantula venom peptide) and A803467 (5-[4-chloro-phenyl]-furan-2-carboxylic acid [3,5-dimethoxy-phenyl]-amide), selective Nav1.7 and Nav1.8 antagonists, respectively, on thermal hyperalgesia in a painful diabetic neuropathy model of mice. Intrathecal administration of ProTx-II at doses from 0.04 to 4 ng to diabetic mice dose-dependently and significantly increased the tail-flick latency. Intrathecal administration of A803467 at doses from 10 to 100 ng to diabetic mice also dose-dependently and significantly increased the tail-flick latency. However, intrathecal administration of either ProTx-II (4 ng) or A803467 (100 ng) had no effect on the tail-flick latency in nondiabetic mice. The expression of either the Nav1.7 or Nav1.8 sodium channel protein in the dorsal root ganglion in diabetic mice was not different from that in nondiabetic mice. The present results suggest that ProTx-II and A803467, highly selective blockers of Nav1.7 and Nav1.8 sodium channels, respectively, in the spinal cord, can have antihyperalgesic effects in diabetic mice. The crystal structure analysis of various polymer substances has been reviewed on the basis of wide-angle high-energy X-ray and neutron diffraction data. The progress in structural analytical techniques of polymer crystals have been reviewed at first. The structural models proposed so far were reinvestigated and new models have been proposed for various kinds of polymer crystals including polyethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(lactic acid) and its stereocomplex etc. The hydrogen atomic positions were also clarified by the quantitative analysis of wide-angle neutron diffraction data, from which the physical properties of polymer crystals have been evaluated theoretically. The bonded electron density distribution has been estimated for a polydiacetylene single crystal on the basis of the so-called X-N method or by the combination of structural information derived from X-ray and neutron diffraction data analysis. We present a new method to analyze an angle-integrated photoelectron spectrum for a crystalline sample using a first-principles calculation of the electron states. A conventional comparison between the photoelectron spectra taken with the angle-integral type and the density of states (DOS) of the entire k-space is open to question because there is usually a limitation of the entrance angle, even in the case of the angle-integral electron analyzer. Thus, it is more appropriate to calculate a partial-k DOS, which is defined as a density of states for the restricted k-space detectable by the analyzer. We measured the angle-integrated photoelectron spectra of graphite with two kinds of analyzers for several photon energies, and variations in the spectra that cannot be represented by the ordinal DOS agreed fairly well with the calculated partialk DOS. Vitamin D deficiency and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and sarcopenia. However, the effects of vitamin D and AGEs on myogenesis and the interaction between muscle and bone remains still unclear. We previously showed that osteoglycin (OGN) is secreted from myoblasts and stimulates osteoblastic differentiation, suggesting that it plays important roles in the interaction between muscle and bone. The aim of this study is thus to examine the effects of vitamin D and AGEs on myoblastic differentiation of C2C12 cells and osteoblastic differentiation of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells through OGN expression. 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25D) and eldecalcitol, an active vitamin D analog, induced the expression of MyoD, myogenin and OGN, and these effects were abolished by vitamin D receptor (VDR) suppression by siRNA in C2C12 cells. Moreover, conditioned medium from 1,25D-pretreated C2C12 cells stimulated the expression of type 1 collagen and alkaline phosphatase in MC3T3-E1 cells, compared to control medium from 1,25D-untreated C2C12 cells. In contrast, conditioned medium from VDR-suppressed and 1,25D-pretreated C2C12 cells showed no effects. AGE2 and AGE3 suppressed the expression of MyoD, myogenin and OGN in C2C12 cells. Moreover, 1,25D blunted the AGEs' effects. In conclusion, these findings showed for the first time that active vitamin D plays important roles in myogenesis and muscle-induced osteoblastogenesis through OGN expression. We recently proposed that mepenzolate bromide (mepenzolate) would be therapeutically effective against chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to its both anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory activities. In this study, we examined the benefits and adverse effects associated with different routes of mepenzolate administration in mice. Oral administration of mepenzolate caused not only bronchodilation but also decreased the severity of elastase-induced pulmonary emphysema; however, compared with the intratracheal route of administration, about 5000 times higher dose was required to achieve this effect. Intravenously or intrarectally administered mepenzolate also showed these pharmacological effects. The intratracheal route of mepenzolate administration, but not other routes, resulted in protective effects against elastase-induced pulmonary damage and bronchodilation at a much lower dose than that which affected defecation and heart rate. An 8-year-old Japanese boy presented with a generalized convulsion. He had hypokalemia (serum K 2.4 mEq/L), hypomagnesemia, and metabolic alkalosis (BE 5.7mmol/L). In addition, his plasma renin activity was elevated. He was tentatively diagnosed with epilepsy on the basis of the electroencephalogram findings and was treated by potassium L-aspartate and carbamazepine to control the hypokalemia and seizure, respectively. However, a year later, the patient continued to have similar abnormal laboratory data. A presumptive diagnosis of Gitelman syndrome (GS) was then made and the patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells were subjected to sequence analysis of the SLC12A3 gene, which encodes a thiazide-sensitive sodium-chloride cotransporter. The patient was found to have compound heterozygous mutations, namely, R642H inherited from his father and R642W inherited from his mother. thus, if a patient shows persistent hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis, GS must be considered, even if the patient exhibits atypical clinical symptoms. Electron-phonon coupling (EPC) plays an important role in solid state physics. Here, we demonstrate an experimental method that enables investigation of the elemental processes of the indirect transition, in which EPC participates in photoexcitation in solids, by resolving the energy and momentum of phonons and electrons simultaneously. For graphite, we used angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to observe electron emission at the Γ-point being scattered from the K-point by a phonon. Energy conservation during phonon emission implies that the step-like structure in the spectrum is near the Fermi level, and angle-resolved measurements revealed phonon dispersions that contribute to EPC because of parallel momentum conservation. The observed phonon branch depends on the photon energy, i.e., the final photoexcitation state; this dependency is partly explained by the selection rule, which is determined by the electron state symmetry for the initial, intermediate, and final states and the phonon. Bronchodilators (such as ipratropium bromide), steroids (such as fluticasone propionate), and newly developed anti-inflammatory drugs (such as roflumilast) are used for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We recently reported that lecithinized superoxide dismutase (PC-SOD) confers a protective effect in mouse models of COPD. We here examined the therapeutic effect of the combined administration of PC-SOD with ipratropium bromide on pulmonary emphysema and compared the effect of PC-SOD to other types of drugs. The severity of emphysema in mice was assessed by various criteria. Lung mechanics (elastance) and respiratory function (ratio of forced expiratory volume in the first 0.05 s to forced vital capacity) were assessed. Administration of PC-SOD by inhalation suppressed elastase-induced pulmonary emphysema, alteration of lung mechanics, and respiratory dysfunction. The concomitant intratracheal administration of ipratropium bromide did not alter the ameliorating effects of PC-SOD. Administration of ipratropium bromide, fluticasone propionate, or roflumilast alone did not suppress the elastase-induced increase in the pulmonary level of superoxide anion, pulmonary inflammatory response, pulmonary emphysema, alteration of lung mechanics, or respiratory dysfunction as effectively as did PC-SOD. PC-SOD, but not the other drugs, showed a therapeutic effect even when the drug was administered after the development of emphysema. PC-SOD also suppressed the cigarette smoke-induced pulmonary inflammatory response and increase in airway resistance. When pressureless sintered silicon nitride with the main additives Y2O3 and Al2O3, having a thermal conductivity K = 20 W/m K, was oxidized at 1240–1360 °C in still air, the resulting surface oxide layer easily bonded to a copper plate in the temperature region between 1065 and 1083 °C, and in the oxygen concentration range of 0.008–0.39 wt%, as shown in a Cu–O phase diagram. The oxide on the silicon nitride was characterized as Y2O3·2SiO2 and mixed silicate glass with additives and impurities that diffused through the grain boundary. The bonding strength of Cu/Si3N4 depends on the amount or layer thickness of silicate glass and reaches as high as 100 MPa by shear at room temperature. Detailed analysis of the oxidation layer and the peeled-off surfaces of directly bonded Si3N4/Cu reveal that the main mechanism of bonding is wetting to glassy silicate phase by mixtures of molten Cu and α-solid solution Cu(O), which solidify to α + Cu2O below 1065 °C by a eutectic reaction. The direct reactive wetting of molten Cu, supplied from the grain boundary of a Cu plate, on the glassy phase enables very tight chemical bonding via oxygen atoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analysed the distribution of histone H3 modifications in the nucleus of the vegetative cell (the vegetative nucleus) during pollen development in lily (Lilium longiflorum). Among the modifications specifically and/or abundantly present in the vegetative nucleus, dimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 9 (H3K9me2) and lysine 27 (H3K27me2) were found in heterochromatin, whereas trimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 27 (H3K27me3) was localized in euchromatin in the vegetative nucleus. Such unique localization of the histone H3 methylation marks, particularly of H3K27me3, within a nucleus was not observed in lily nuclei other than the vegetative nucleus. The level of H3K27me3 increased in the euchromatic region of the vegetative nucleus during pollen maturation. Identical twin brothers developed mild encephalopathy at the age of 7.0 and 9.7 years (Patient 1) and 10.7 years (Patient 2). Patient 1 had influenza A at the time of his second episode, but triggering agents were not evident at the first episode. The triggering agents in Patient 2 were unclear. The neurological features of both patients included transient facial numbness, left arm paresis, dysarthria, and gait disturbance. Diffusion-weighted images from magnetic resonance imaging showed high signal levels at the splenium of corpus callosum and in the bilateral cerebral deep white matter. These results are characteristic of mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with a reversible isolated splenium of corpus callosum lesion. All three episodes were treated with a methylprednisolone pulse. Acyclovir was also administered to Patient 2 and to Patient 1 during his first episode. Patient 1 received an anti-influenza agent andintravenous immunoglobulin during his second episode. Abstract Purpose  We recently developed prostaglandin E1 (PGE1)-encapsulated nanoparticles, prepared with a poly(lactide) homopolymer (PLA, Mw = 17,500) and monomethoxy poly(ethyleneglycol)-PLA block copolymer (PEG-PLA) (NP-L20). In this study, we tested whether the accelerated blood clearance (ABC) phenomenon is observed with NP-L20 and other PEG-modified PLA-nanoparticles in rats. Methods  The plasma levels of PGE1 and anti-PEG IgM antibody were determined by EIA and ELISA, respectively. Results  Second injections of NP-L20 were cleared much more rapidly from the circulation than first injections, showing that the ABC phenomenon was induced. This ABC phenomenon, and the accompanying induction of anti-PEG IgM antibody production, was optimal at a time interval of 7 days between the first and second injections. Compared to NP-L20, NP-L33s that were prepared with PLA (Mw = 28,100) and have a smaller particle size induced production of anti-PEG IgM antibody to a lesser extent. NP-L20 but not NP-L33s gave rise to the ABC phenomenon with a time interval of 14 days. NP-L33s showed a better sustained-release profile of PGE1 than NP-L20. Conclusions  This study revealed that the ABC phenomenon is induced by PEG-modified PLA-nanoparticles. A genomic clone containing the gH2A gene, a histone variant specifically expressed in male gametic cells within the pollen of Lilium longiflorum, was isolated. Sequence analysis revealed that the coding region of the gene is interrupted by one intron, as is the case with the somatic type of plant histone H2A genes, suggesting derivation from the same ancestral gene containing one intron. In addition, a 2.8-kbp fragment of the 5′ upstream region of gH2A contained TATA and CAAT boxes, but neither a plant histone-specific regulatory DNA element nor vegetative cell-specific cis-elements were found. A histochemical study of stable transformants demonstrated that the 5′ upstream region of the gene can drive gene expression specifically in the generative cell of pollen; no activity was detectable in the vegetative cell or in other reproductive and vegetative tissues of transgenic Nicotiana tabacum. These results strongly suggest that the generative cell can direct specific gene expression, that this expression may be regulated by a putative male gametic factor, and that the gH2A promoter may therefore serve as a useful male gametic cell fate marker in angiosperms. Summary. This paper describes numerical verification of a double turning point of a nonlinear system using an extended system. To verify the existence of a double turning point, we need to prove that one of the solutions of the extended system corresponds to the double turning point. For that, we propose an extended system with an additional condition. As an example, for a finite dimensional problem, we verify the existence and local uniqueness of a double turning point numerically using the extended system and a verification method based on the Banach fixed point theorem. Sweet's syndrome, characterized by fever and a painful erythematous rash with a dermal neutrophilic infiltrate, develops primarily due to paraneoplastic phenomena in adults. Sweet's syndrome is very rare in neonates. We report a Japanese female neonate (age <2 months), who developed Sweet's syndrome with episodes of perineal infection in association with congenital rectovestibular fistula with normal anus. Sweet's syndrome was diagnosed basing on clinical features and histopathology of biopsied skin tissues. Rectovestibular fistula was confirmed after the signs of inflammation subsided and the rash disappeared. In the literature, we found another case of neonatal Sweet's syndrome associated with rectovestibular fistula in a Japanese female neonate. In GaAs and AlAs atomic-layer epitaxy (ALE), it was experimentally found that the AlAs layer is deposited in two monolayers (2 ML) per ALE cycle, while the GaAs layer is deposited in 1 ML. In order to elucidate this growth mechanism, we compared the stability of Ga and Al atoms on the GaAs(100) surface by the first-principles total energy calculation based on density functional theory. Comparing adsorption energies, we found that Ga and Al stably adsorbed on the As-terminated GaAs surface in 1 ML. It was also revealed that Al can adsorb on an As-terminated GaAs(100) surface in 2 ML because excess Al atoms can be adsorbed by forming a metallic Al(110) plane-like structure. Pentacene thin-film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated with ultraviolet-light (UV)-cured polysilsesquioxane (PSQ) gate dielectric layers using cross-linker molecules with or without ester groups. To polymerize PSQ without ester groups, thiol-ene reaction was adopted. The TFTs fabricated with PSQ layers comprising ester-free cross-linkers showed a higher carrier mobility than the TFTs with PSQ layers cross-linked with ester groups, which had large electric dipole moments that limited the carrier mobility. It was demonstrated that the thiol-ene reaction is more suitable than the conventional radical reaction for UV-cured PSQ with small dielectric constant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in graphite was investigated via high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy and first-principles band calculations. We found strong resonance enhancements in the magnitude of specific phonon scatterings at specific primary energies of the incident electron. This result is attributed to a new scattering mechanism, where the incident electron is trapped at an unoccupied band, is scattered into another band via EPC with a specific phonon, and is finally detected by the analyzer. Benzodithiophene dimers modified with hexyl groups (2C6-BDT-dimer) were investigated as solution-processable organic semiconductors for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). Since 2C6-BDT-dimer crystals have an anisotropic shape, flow coating was adopted to grow polycrystalline films. The flow-coated films were inferior to the vacuum-evaporated ones in terms of their crystallinity estimated from X-ray diffraction data. However, the hole mobility of the OTFTs with the flow-coated films, which was 1.7 cm2 V−1 s−1 at maximum, was higher than that of the OTFTs with vacuum-evaporated films because the one-dimensional thin crystals of the flow-coated films were aligned in the flow-coating direction. The growth mechanisms of zinc oxide and zinc sulfide films by mist chemical vapor deposition (mist-CVD) were experimentally investigated from the viewpoint of mist behaviors and chemical reactions. The proper growth model, either vaporization or the Leidenfrost model, was studied by supplying two kinds of mists with different kinds of sources, such as H216O and H218O for ZnO growth and ZnCl2 and thiourea for ZnS growth. Moreover, the origin of the oxygen atoms of ZnO was investigated using a quantitative analysis. Indirect transitions of electrons in graphene and graphite are investigated by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with several different incident photon energies and light polarizations. The theoretical calculations of the indirect transition for graphene and for a single crystal of graphite are compared with the experimental measurements for highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite and a single crystal of graphite. The dispersion relations for the transverse optical (TO) and the out-of-plane longitudinal acoustic (ZA) phonon modes of graphite and the TO phonon mode of graphene can be extracted from the inelastic ARPES intensity. We find that the TO phonon mode for k points along the Γ−K and K−M−K′ directions in the Brillouin zone can be observed in the ARPES spectra of graphite and graphene by using a photon energy ≈11.1 eV. The relevant mechanism in the ARPES process for this case is the resonant indirect transition. On the other hand, the ZA phonon mode of graphite can be observed by using a photon energy ≈6.3 eV through a nonresonant indirect transition, while the ZA phonon mode of graphene within the same mechanism should not be observed. Zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) are essential for normal brain functions. In particular, Zn and Cu are released to synaptic clefts during neuronal excitation. Synaptic Zn and Cu regulate neuronal excitability, maintain calcium (Ca) homeostasis, and play central roles in memory formation. However, in pathological conditions such as transient global ischemia, excess Zn is secreted to synaptic clefts, which causes neuronal death and can eventually trigger the pathogenesis of a vascular type of senile dementia. We have previously investigated the characteristics of Zn-induced neurotoxicity and have demonstrated that low concentrations of Cu can exacerbate Zn neurotoxicity. Furthermore, during our pharmacological approaches to clarify the molecular pathways of Cu-enhanced Zn-induced neurotoxicity, we have revealed the involvement of Ca homeostasis disruption. In the present review, we discuss the roles of Zn and Cu in the synapse, as well as the crosstalk between Zn, Cu, and Ca, which our study along with other recent studies suggest may underlie the pathogenesis of vascular-type senile dementia.
