The long-range supramolecular interactions in liquid crystals (LCs) can be used to amplify and subsequently propagate microscopic structural changes into macroscopic events. Here, we report on a systematic structure-property analysis using 16 chiral photoswitchable dopants composed of bistable hydrazones and chiral isosorbide moieties. Our findings showcase the relationship between the dopant's structure and its helical twisting power (β), and hence, the photophysical properties of the host LC. We show that an increase in the hydrazone CNNH dihedral angle results in an increase in the β value, while alkoxy chains do not lead to such an increase. These results contradict established rules of thumb, stating that structural rigidity and long alky chains are needed for high β values. We also found that the position of the substitution, whether at the 2' or 5' positions of the isosorbide unit, or the attachment of the chiral unit to the rotor or stator phenyl units can have negative or positive additive effects that can either increase or decrease the β values. These results made us hypothesize that unsymmetrically functionalized dopants should result in large Δβ values, which we corroborated experimentally. Moreover, a fluorine-functionalized dopant resulted in higher overall β values, most likely because of π-π interactions. Finally, the dopants were used in modulating and locking in the reflective properties of LC films, yielding multicolor LC canvases that can reflect light from the ultraviolet to the infrared range (i.e., a manipulation of up to ca. 1500 nm of reflected light).

Nickel and palladium complexes bearing "sandwich" diimine ligands with perfluorinated aryl caps have been synthesized, characterized, and explored in ethylene polymerization reactions. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of the precatalysts 16 and 6b shows differences from their nonfluorinated analogues 17 and 19 , with the perfluorinated aryl caps centered precisely over the nickel and palladium centers, which results in higher buried volumes of the metal centers relative to the nonfluorinated analogues. The sandwich diimine-palladium complexes 5a and 5b containing perfluorinated aryl caps polymerize ethylene in a controlled fashion with activities that are substantially increased compared with their nonfluorinated analogues. Migratory insertion rates in relevant methyl ethylene complexes agree with the activities exhibited in bulk polymerization experiments. DFT studies suggest that facility of ethylene rotation from its preferred orientation perpendicular to the Pd-alkyl bond into a parallel in-plane conformation contributes to the higher polymerization activity for 5b relative to 18a. For these palladium systems, polymer molecular weights can be controlled via hydrogen addition (hydrogenolysis), which is unusual for late-transition-metal-catalyzed olefin polymerizations with no catalyst deactivation occurring. Sandwich diimine-nickel complexes 6a and 6b with perfluorinated aryl caps show ethylene polymerization activities that are about half of those of classical tetraisopropyl-substituted catalyst 2 but again are more active than the analogous nonfluorinated sandwich complexes. Ethylene polymerizations exhibit living behavior, and branched ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylenes (UHMWPEs) with very low-molecular-weight distributions (less than 1.1) are obtained. The activated nickel catalysts are stable in the absence of monomer and show good long-term stability at 25 °C.

Purpose: To determine the acute effects of a mitochondrial targeting antioxidant (MitoQ) on the metabolic response during exercise., Methods: Nine (n = 9) physically inactive females (age 47 ± 22 years) performed two trials (Placebo and MitoQ) in a double-blind randomized cross-over design. In both trials, participants performed an exercise protocol consisting of 3-min stages at submaximal workloads followed by a ramp protocol to volitional exhaustion. Participants received either Placebo or MitoQ (80 mg) 1 h prior to exercise. Indirect calorimetry and cardiovascular measurements were collected throughout the duration of the exercise bout., Results: Submaximal metabolic and cardiovascular variables were not different between trials (p > 0.05). VO 2max was higher (p = 0.03) during Placebo (23.5 ± 5.7 mL kg min -1 ) compared to MitoQ (21.0 ± 6.6 mL kg min -1 ). Maximal ventilation was also higher (p = 0.02) in Placebo (82.4 ± 17.7 L/min) compared to MitoQ (75.0 ± 16.8 L/min). Maximal cardiovascular variables and blood lactate were not different between trials (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: An acute dose of MitoQ blunted VO 2max , which was primarily mediated by impairment of ventilatory function. These data suggest that the acute accumulation of exercise-induced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) are necessary for maximal aerobic capacity. Perchlorate anions used in industry are harmful pollutants in groundwater. Therefore, selectively binding perchlorate provides solutions for environmental remediation. Here, we synthesized a series of tripodal organic cages with highly preorganized C sp3 -H bonds that exhibit selectively binding to perchlorate in organic solvents and water. These cages demonstrated binding affinities to perchlorate of 10 5 -10 6 M -1 at room temperature, along with high selectivity over competing anions, such as iodide and nitrate. Through single crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculations, we identified unconventional C sp3 -H···O interactions as the primary driving force for perchlorate binding. Additionally, we successfully incorporated this cage into a 3D-printable polymer network, showcasing its efficacy in removing perchlorate from water.

We report a new method for the regiodivergent dearomative (3 + 2) reaction between 3-substituted indoles and oxyallyl cations. Access to both regioisomeric products is possible and is contingent on the presence or absence of a bromine atom on the substituted oxyallyl cation. In this way, we are able to prepare molecules that contain highly-hindered, stereodefined, vicinal, quaternary centers. Detailed computational studies employing energy decomposition analysis (EDA) at the DFT level establishes that regiochemical control arises from either reactant distortion energy or orbital mixing and dispersive forces, depending on the oxyallyl cation. Protonation of cyclopropanes and aziridines is well-studied, but reactions of phosphiranes with acids are rare and have not been reported to result in ring opening. Treatment of syn -Mes*PCH 2 CHR (Mes* = 2,4,6-( t -Bu) 3 C 6 H 2 , R = Me or Ph, syn - 1 - 2 ) or anti -Mes*PCH 2 CHPh ( anti - 2 ) with triflic acid resulted in regiospecific anti -Markovnikov C-protonation with ring opening and cyclophosphination of a Mes* ortho - t -Bu group to yield the phospholanium cations [PH(CH 2 CH 2 R)(4,6-( t -Bu) 2 -2-CMe 2 CH 2 C 6 H 2 )][OTf] (R = Me or Ph, 3 - 4 ), which were deprotonated with NEt 3 to give phospholanes 5 - 6 . Enantioenriched or racemic syn - 1 both gave racemic 3 . The byproduct [Mes*PH(CH 2 CH 2 Me)(OH)][OTf] ( 7 ) was formed from syn - 1 and HOTf in the presence of water. Density functional theory calculations suggested that P-protonation followed by ring opening and hydride migration to C yields the phosphenium ion, [Mes*P(CH 2 CH 2 Me)][OTf], which undergoes C-H oxidative addition of an o - t -Bu methyl group. Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) constitute the newest generation of fluorocarbon refrigerants and foam-blowing agents due to their reduced global warming potential vs their saturated analogues. To identify new synthetic routes to HFOs, we show that reactions of bulky Ni(0) phosphine and -NHC complexes with vinylidene difluoride (VF2) afford μ-fluoro-1,1,3-trifluorobut-3-enyl Ni complexes. Moreover, addition of triisopropylsilane allows for reductive elimination of the reduced product─2,4,4-trifluoro-1-butene─demonstrating the Ni-catalyzed hydrodefluorodimerization of VF2. Accompanying DFT calculations identify the T-shaped nickelacyclopentane intermediate that spontaneously undergoes selective intramolecular β-F ( vs β-H) elimination.

Ligand substitution at the metal center is common in catalysis and signal transduction of metalloproteins. Understanding the effects of particular ligands, as well as the polypeptide surrounding, is critical for uncovering mechanisms of these biological processes and exploiting them in the design of bioinspired catalysts and molecular devices. A series of switchable K79G/M80X/F82C (X = Met, His, or Lys) variants of cytochrome (cyt) c was employed to directly compare the stability of differently ligated proteins and activation barriers for Met, His, and Lys replacement at the ferric heme iron. Studies of these variants and their nonswitchable counterparts K79G/M80X have revealed stability trends Met < Lys < His and Lys < His < Met for the protein Fe III -X and Fe II -X species, respectively. The differences in the hydrogen-bonding interactions in folded proteins and in solvation of unbound X in the unfolded proteins explain these trends. Calculations of free energy of ligand dissociation in small heme model complexes reveal that the ease of the Fe III -X bond breaking increases in the series amine < imidazole < thioether, mirroring trends in hardness of these ligands. Experimental rate constants for X dissociation in differently ligated cyt c variants are consistent with this sequence, but the differences between Met and His dissociation rates are attenuated because the former process is limited by the heme crevice opening. Analyses of activation parameters and comparisons to those for the Lys-to-Met ligand switch in the alkaline transition suggest that ligand dissociation is entropically driven in all the variants and accompanied by Lys protonation at neutral pH. The described thiolate redox-linked switches have offered a wealth of new information about interactions of different protein-derived ligands with the heme iron in cyt c model proteins, and we anticipate that the strategy of employing these switches could benefit studies of other redox metalloproteins and model complexes.

Tetrahedral main-group compounds are normally configurationally stable, but P-epimerization of the chiral phosphiranium cations syn- or anti-[Mes*P(Me)CH 2 CHPh][OTf] (Mes*=2,4,6-(t-Bu) 3 C 6 H 2 ) occurred under mild conditions at 60 °C in CD 2 Cl 2 , resulting in isomerization to give a syn-enriched equilibrium mixture. Ion exchange with excess [NBu 4 ][Δ-TRISPHAT] (Δ-TRISPHAT=Δ-P(o-C 6 Cl 4 O 2 ) 3 ) followed by chromatography on silica removed [NBu 4 ][OTf] and gave mixtures of syn- and anti-[Mes*P(Me)CH 2 CHPh][Δ-TRISPHAT]⋅x[NBu 4 ][Δ-TRISPHAT]. NMR spectroscopy showed that isomerization proceeded with epimerization at P and retention at C. DFT calculations are consistent with a mechanism involving P-C cleavage to yield a hyperconjugation-stabilized carbocation, pyramidal inversion promoted by σ-interaction of the P lone pair with the neighboring β-carbocation, and ring closure with inversion of configuration at P., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Exposure of 10π-electron benzazaphosphole 1 to HCl, followed by nucleophilic substitution with the Grignard reagent BrMgCCPh afforded alkynyl functionalized 3 featuring an exocyclic -C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ph group with an elongated P-C bond (1.7932(19) Å). Stoichiometric experiments revealed that treatment of trans-Pd(PEt3)2(Ar)(i) (Ar = p-Me (C) or p-F (D)) with 3 generated trans-Pd(PEt3)2(Ar)(CCPh) (Ar = p-Me (E) or p-F (F)), 5, which is the result of ligand exchange between P-I byproduct 4 and C/D, and the reductively eliminated product (Ar-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ph). Cyclic voltammetry studies showed and independent investigations confirmed 4 is also susceptible to redox processes including bimetallic oxidative addition to Pd(0) to give Pd(i) dimer 6-Pd2-(P(t-Bu)3)2 and reduction to diphosphine 7. During catalysis, we hypothesized that this unwanted reactivity could be circumvented by employing a source of fluoride as an additive. This was demonstrated by conducting a Sonogashira-type reaction between 1-iodotoluene and 3 in the presence of 10 mol% Na2PdCl4, 20 mol% P(t-Bu)Cy2, and 5 equiv. of tetramethylammonium fluoride (TMAF), resulting in turnover and the isolation of Ph-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-(o-Tol) as the major product.

Background: Social distancing policies aimed to limit Covid-19 across the UK were gradually relaxed between May and August 2020, as peak incidences passed. Population density is an important driver of national incidence rates; however peak incidences in rural regions may lag national figures by several weeks. We aimed to forecast the timing of peak Covid-19 mortality rate in rural North Wales. Methods: Covid-19 related mortality data up to 7/5/2020 were obtained from Public Health Wales and the UK Government. Sigmoidal growth functions were fitted by non-linear least squares and model averaging used to extrapolate mortality to 24/8/2020. The dates of peak mortality incidences for North Wales, Wales and the UK; and the percentage of predicted mortality at 24/8/2020 were calculated. Results: The peak daily death rates in Wales and the UK were estimated to have occurred on the 14/04/2020 and 15/04/2020, respectively. For North Wales, this occurred on the 07/05/2020, corresponding to the date of analysis. The number of deaths reported in North Wales on 07/05/2020 represents 33% of the number predicted to occur by 24/08/2020, compared with 74 and 62% for Wales and the UK, respectively. Conclusion: Policies governing the movement of people in the gradual release from lockdown are likely to impact significantly on areas-principally rural in nature-where cases of Covid-19, deaths and immunity are likely to be much lower than in populated areas. Kinetic separation of the commercially available cis / trans -(+)-limonene oxide mixture by ring opening with primary phosphido nucleophiles LiPHR (R = ferrocenyl, Ph, Cy, t -Bu, Mes* (Mes* = 2,4,6-( t -Bu) 3 C 6 H 2 )), followed by treatment with aqueous NH 4 Cl and H 2 O 2 , gave unreacted cis -(+)-limonene oxide and diastereoenriched mixtures of the secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs) PHR( trans -(+)-Lim-OH)(O), which could be separated by chromatography and/or recrystallization. This one-pot synthesis uses a cheap chiral material and commercially available primary phosphines to control the configuration of the new P-stereogenic SPOs, which are potentially useful as ligands for metal complexes in asymmetric catalysis.

Evidence from animal and human studies suggests that ocular growth is influenced by visual experience. Reduced retinal image quality and imposed optical defocus result in predictable changes in axial eye growth. Higher order aberrations are optical imperfections of the eye that alter retinal image quality despite optimal correction of spherical defocus and astigmatism. Since higher order aberrations reduce retinal image quality and produce variations in optical vergence across the entrance pupil of the eye, they may provide optical signals that contribute to the regulation and modulation of eye growth and refractive error development. The magnitude and type of higher order aberrations vary with age, refractive error, and during near work and accommodation. Furthermore, distinctive changes in higher order aberrations occur with various myopia control treatments, including atropine, near addition spectacle lenses, orthokeratology and soft multifocal and dual-focus contact lenses. Several plausible mechanisms have been proposed by which higher order aberrations may influence axial eye growth, the development of refractive error, and the treatment effect of myopia control interventions. Future studies of higher order aberrations, particularly during childhood, accommodation, and treatment with myopia control interventions are required to further our understanding of their potential role in refractive error development and eye growth., (© 2019 Optometry Australia.)

Pyridine-phosphaalkene (PN) ligands 2a-e were prepared in an E -selective fashion using phospha-Wittig methodology. Treatment of these five ligands, varying only in their 6-substituent with RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 , produced four distinct types of coordination complexes: pyridine-phosphaalkene-derived 3b,d , cyclized 4e , and six-coordinate 5a and 6c . Prolonged heating of 3b,d in THF resulted in C-H activation of the Mes* group and cyclization to give 4b,d featuring a bidentate pyridine-phospholane ligand bound to the metal center. Complex 5a , also possessing a newly formed phospholane ring, contained a different spatial arrangement of donors to Ru(II) with an agostic Ru-H-C interaction serving as the sixth donor to the transition metal center. Ligands 2b,d,e and Ru(II) complexes 3b, 4b,e and 5a were all characterized by X-ray crystallography. Six-coordinate 6c featured a structure similar to 4b,d,e , but with the CF 3 substituent acting as a weakly bound sixth ligand to the Ru(II) center, as observed by 31 P{ 1 H} and 19 F NMR spectroscopy. Covalently linked single-crystalline porous organic materials are highly desired for structure-property analysis; however, periodically polymerizing organic entities into high dimensional networks is challenging. Here, we report a series of topologically divergent single-crystalline hydrogen-bonded cross-linked organic frameworks (H C OFs) with visible guest-induced elastic expansions, which mutually integrate high structural order and high flexibility into one framework. These H C OFs are synthesized by photo-cross-linking molecular crystals with alkyldithiols of different chain lengths. Their detailed structural information was revealed by single-crystal X-ray analysis and experimental investigations of H C OFs and their corresponding single-crystalline analogues. Upon guest adsorption, H C OF-2 crystals composed of a 3D self-entangled polymer network undergo anisotropic expansion to more than twice their original size, while the 2D-bilayer H C OF-3 crystals exhibit visible, layered sorption bands and form delaminated sheets along the plane of its 2D layers. The dynamic expansion of H C OF networks creates guest-induced porosity with over 473% greater volume than their permanent voids, as calculated from their record-breaking aqueous iodine adsorption capacities. Temperature-gated DMSO sorption investigations illustrated that the flexible nature of cross-linkers in H C OFs provides positive entropy from the coexistence of multiple conformations to allow for elastic expansion and contraction of the frameworks.

Diastereoselective coordination of racemic secondary phosphines (PHRR') to Cu(I) precursors containing chiral bis(phosphines) (diphos*) was explored as a potential route to P-stereogenic phosphido complexes. Reaction of [Cu(NCMe) 4 ][PF 6 ] with chiral bis(phospholanes) gave [Cu(diphos*) 2 ][PF 6 ] (diphos* = ( R, R)-Me-DuPhos (1), ( R, R)-Et-DuPhos (2), or ( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE) (3)) or the mono(chelates) [Cu(diphos*)(NCMe) n ][PF 6 ] (diphos* = ( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos, n = 2 (4); diphos* = ( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE, n = 1 (5)). Treatment of [Cu(NCMe) 4 ][PF 6 ] with diphos* and PHMe(Is) (Is = 2,4,6-( i-Pr) 3 C 6 H 2 ) gave mixtures of diastereomers of [Cu(( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos)(PHMe(Is))(NCMe)][PF 6 ] (6) and [Cu(( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE)(PHMe(Is))][PF 6 ] (7); two of the three expected isomers of the bis(secondary phosphine) complexes [Cu(( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos)(PhHP(CH 2 ) n PHPh)][PF 6 ] ( n = 2 (8); n = 3 (9)) were formed preferentially in related reactions. Reaction of the halide-bridged dimers [Cu(( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos)(X)] 2 or [Cu(( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE)(I)] 2 with PHMe(Is) gave the labile adducts Cu(( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos)(PHMe(Is))(X) (X = Cl (10), Br (11), I (12)) and Cu(( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE)(PHMe(Is))(I) (13). Complexes 1, 6, and 8-11 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Variable temperature NMR studies of 6 and 8 showed that the secondary phosphine ligands underwent reversible dissociation. Deprotonation of 6 or 7 generated the P-stereogenic phosphido complexes Cu(diphos*)(PMeIs) (diphos* = ( R, R)- i-Pr-DuPhos (14) or ( R, R)-Me-FerroLANE) (17)), observed by 31 P NMR spectroscopy, but decomposition also occurred. Density functional theory calculations were used to characterize the diastereomers of thermally unstable 17 and the inversion barrier in a model copper-phosphido complex. These observations provided structure-property relationships which may be useful in developing catalytic asymmetric reactions involving secondary phosphines and P-stereogenic copper phosphido intermediates.

Strain has been used as a tool to modulate the reactivity (e.g., mechanochemistry) and thermal isomerization kinetics of photochromic compounds. Macrocyclization is used to build-up strain in such systems, and in general the reactivity and rates increase with the decrease in macrocycle size. To ascertain the effect of strain on recently reported bistable hydrazone photoswitches, we incorporated them into macrocycles having varying aliphatic linker lengths (C3-C7), and studied their switching behavior, and effect of macrocycle size on the thermal isomerization rate. Surprisingly, while the systems with C3-C5 linkers behave as expected (i.e., the rate is faster with smaller linkers), the isomerization rate in the systems with larger aliphatic linkers (C6-C8) is enhanced up to 4 orders of magnitude. NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations were used to elucidate this unexpected behavior, which on the basis of our analyses results from the buildup of Pitzer (torsional), Prelog (transannular) and Baeyer (large angle) strain in the longer linkers.

Nucleophilic substitution results in inversion of configuration at the electrophilic carbon center (S N 2) or racemization (S N 1). The stereochemistry of the nucleophile is rarely considered, but phosphines, which have a high barrier to pyramidal inversion, attack electrophiles with retention of configuration at P. Surprisingly, cyclization of bifunctional secondary phosphine alkyl tosylates proceeded under mild conditions with inversion of configuration at the nucleophile to yield P-stereogenic syn-phosphiranes. Today, more than 100 Food and Drug Administration-approved steroidal agents are prescribed daily for indications including heart failure, inflammation, pain and cancer. While triumphs in organic chemistry have enabled the establishment and sustained growth of the steroid pharmaceutical industry, the production of highly functionalized synthetic steroids of varying substitution and stereochemistry remains challenging, despite the numerous reports of elegant strategies for their de novo synthesis. Here, we describe an advance in chemical synthesis that has established an enantiospecific means to access novel steroids with unprecedented facility and flexibility through the sequential use of two powerful ring-forming reactions: a modern metallacycle-mediated annulative cross-coupling and a new acid-catalysed vinylcyclopropane rearrangement cascade. In addition to accessing synthetic steroids of either enantiomeric series, these steroidal products have been selectively functionalized within each of the four carbocyclic rings, a synthetic ent-steroid has been prepared on a multigram scale, the enantiomer of a selective oestrogen has been synthesized, and a novel ent-steroid with growth inhibitory properties in three cancer cell lines has been discovered.

For investigation of structure-property relationships in copper phosphine halide complexes, treatment of copper(I) halides with chiral bis(phosphines) gave dinuclear [Cu((R,R)-i-Pr-DuPhos)(μ-X)] 2 [X = I (1), Br (2), Cl (3)], [Cu(μ-((R,R)-Me-FerroLANE)(μ-I)] 2 (5), and [Cu((S,S)-Et-FerroTANE)(I)] 2 (6), pentanuclear cluster Cu 5 I 5 ((S,S)-Et-FerroTANE) 3 (7), and the monomeric Josiphos complexes Cu((R,S)-CyPF-t-Bu)(I) (8) and Cu((R,S)-PPF-t-Bu)(I) (9); 1-3, 5, and 7-9 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Treatment of iodide 1 with AgF gave [Cu((R,R)-i-Pr-DuPhos)(μ-F)] 2 (4). DuPhos complexes 1-4 emitted yellow-green light upon UV irradiation at room temperature in the solid state. This process was studied by low-temperature emission spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which assigned the luminescence to (M + X)LCT (Cu 2 X 2 to DuPhos aryl) excited states. Including Grimme's dispersion corrections in the DFT calculations (B3LYP-D3) gave significantly shorter Cu-Cu distances than those obtained using B3LYP, with the nondispersion-corrected calculations better matching the crystallographic data; other intramolecular metrics are better reproduced using B3LYP-D3. A discussion of the factors leading to this unusual observation is presented.

The manuscript reports the synthesis, characterization, and analysis of electronic structure in a series of complexes of small perfluorocarbon ligands with the (PNP)Rh fragment (where PNP is a diarylamido/bis(phosphine) pincer ligand). Reactions of (PNP)Rh(TBE) as the source of (PNP)Rh with CHF 3 and C 2 HF 5 produced perfluoroalkylidene complexes (PNP)Rh[double bond, length as m-dash]CF 2 and (PNP)Rh[double bond, length as m-dash]C(F)(CF 3 ). (PNP)Rh[double bond, length as m-dash]CF 2 could also be obtained via the reaction of (PNP)Rh(TBE) with Me 3 SiCF 3 /CsF, with an admixture of (PNP)Rh(C 2 F 4 ), where TBE = tert -butylethylene. Abstraction of fluoride from these neutral (PNP)RhC x F y complexes was successful, although only abstraction from (PNP)Rh[double bond, length as m-dash]CF 2 allowed unambiguous identification of the Rh product, [(PNP)Rh[triple bond, length as m-dash]CF] + . DFT computational studies allowed comparison of relative energies of (PNP)Rh(C 2 F 4 ) and [(PNP)Rh(C 2 F 3 )] + isomers as well as comparisons between the electronic structure of the [double bond, length as m-dash]CF 2 , C 2 F 4 , and [triple bond, length as m-dash]CF + complexes and their hydrocarbon analogues., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2017.)

Treatment of Ni(0) complexes 1a-e with sub-atmospheric pressures of trifluoroethylene (TrFE) affords hydrofluoronickelacyclopentanes L 2 Ni(C 4 F 6 H 2 ) 2a-e (L = PPh 3 , P(O-o-tol) 3 , PPh 2 Me, PPhMe 2 , PMe 3 ). Fluorine NMR analysis of 2a-e demonstrates predominant formation of three (of the possible six) isomers upon oxidative cycloaddition of TrFE: the cis and trans head-tail isomers and the trans head-head isomer, where the CHF group is defined as the TrFE "head". The respective ratios of L 2 Ni(C 4 F 6 H 2 ) isomers are influenced by the nature of L, with smaller phosphines favoring the thermodynamically preferred (from DFT calculations) trans head-head isomer (cf. 50% with PMe 3 ) and the largest affording small amounts of the tail-tail isomers. Lewis and Brønsted acids induce a surprising double C-F bond activation in 2c-d, affording small functionalized hydrofluoroalkenes. Interestingly, varying the acid employed dictates the organic product obtained from the head-tail isomers: BF 3 ·OEt 2 is selective for 1,1,2,3-tetrafluorocyclobutene, whereas Me 3 SiOTf and N,N-dimethylanilinium bromide yield (Z,E)-1,1,3,4-tetrafluorobutadiene as the major fluorinated product. Reaction intermediates were isolated, and possible pathways are discussed.

The trapping of a phosphinidene (R-P) in an NCN pincer is presented. Stabilized phosphinidene 1 was characterized by 31 P{ 1 H}, 1 H, and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR spectroscopy, exhibiting an averaged C 2v symmetry in solution between -60 and 60 °C. In the solid state, the phosphinidene is coordinated by one adjacent N atom featuring a formal P-N bond (1.757(2) Å) to give a five-membered ring with some aromatic character, confirmed by DFT calculations (B3LYP-D3/6-311G**++) to be the ground-state structure. Equilibration of the two N ligands occurs rapidly in solution via a "bell-clapper"-type process through an associative symmetric transition state calculated to lie 4.0 kcal mol -1 above the ground state., (© 2016 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Contributions of the active site metal to the stability of carbonic anhydrase (CA) were quantified by differential scanning calorimetry and complementary unfolding measurements of CA substituted with Co(2+), Cd(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+) and Mn(2+). The metal ions stabilize the protein to different extent, with the highest stability provided by the native Zn(2+). This additional stability does not correlate with the enthalpy of the three metal-imidazole (His) bonds at the active site or other properties of the metal ions (charge density, hydration enthalpy). However, DFT calculations reveal an energetic penalty associated with metal coordination at the active site, and the magnitude of this penalty correlates inversely with metal contributions to the stability of the protein. While the affinity of CA for metal ions generally reflects the Irving-Williams series, the additional thermal stability provided by metal ions is modulated by the rigid His3 coordination that is imposed at the protein site.

Reductive activation of an α-fluorine in the perfluoroalkyl complexes Cp*(L)(i)Ir-CF2RF using Mg/graphite leads to perfluorocarbene complexes Cp*(L)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFRF (L = CO, PMe3; RF = CF3, C2F5, C6F5). New complexes E-Cp*(PMe3)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFC2F5 and E-Cp*(CO)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFC6F5 have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and a comparison of metric parameters with previously reported analogues is reported. Experimental NMR and computational DFT (B3LYP/LACV3P**++) studies agree that for Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFRF complexes (RF = CF3, CF2CF3) the thermodynamic preference for the E or Z isomer depends on the steric requirements of ligand L; when L = CO the Z-isomer (F cis to Cp*) is preferred and for L = PMe3 the E-isomer is preferred. When reduction of the precursors is carried out in the dark the reaction is completely selective to produce E- or Z-isomers. Exposure of solutions of these compounds to ambient light results in slow conversion to a photostationary non-equilibrium mixture of E and Z isomers. In the dark, these E/Z mixtures convert thermally to their preferred E or Z equilibrium geometries in an even slower reaction. A study of the temperature dependent kinetics of this dark transformation allows ΔG(‡)298 for rotation about the Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFCF3 double bond to be experimentally determined as 25 kcal mol(-1); a DFT/B3LYP/LACV3P**++ calculation of this rotation barrier is in excellent agreement (27 kcal mol(-1)) with the experimental value. Reaction of HCl with toluene solutions of Cp*(L)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFRF (L = CO, PMe3) or Cp*(CO)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CF3)2 at low temperature resulted in regiospecific addition of HCl across the metal carbon double bond, ultimately yielding Cp*(L)Ir(CHFRF)Cl and Cp*(CO)Ir[CH(CF3)2]Cl. Reaction of HCl with single E or Z diastereomers of Cp*(L)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFRF gives stereospecific cis-addition to give single diastereomers of Cp*Ir(L)(CHFRF)Cl; addition of HCl to several different E/Z ratios of Cp*(L)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFRF affords ratios of diastereomeric products Cp*(L)Ir(CHFRF)Cl identical to the original ratio of starting material isomers. The addition of HCl is therefore demonstrated to be unambiguously regio- and stereo-specific. The observed product regiochemistry of addition of HCl to Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CF2, Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFRF, and Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CF3)2 ligands is the same and is not dependent on the ground state energy preference (singlet or triplet) for the free perfluorocarbene. DFT calculations on model HCl addition reactions indicate that this regiochemistry is strongly preferred thermodynamically, but predict that in H(δ+)-Cl(δ-) addition to Cp(PH3)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CF2, H(δ+) attack at Ir has a lower energy transition state, while for Cp(PH3)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFCF3 and Cp(PH3)Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CF3)2, H(δ+) attack at C is the kinetically preferred pathway. The carbene carbon atoms in Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CFCF3 and Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CF3)2 complexes are unambiguously basic towards HCl, while in the Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]CF2 analogues the carbene carbon is less basic than its Ir partner, and the eventual regiochemistry of HCl addition arises from thermodynamic control.

The (pentafluoroethyl)(trifluoromethyl)carbene complex Cp*Ir(CO)[[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CF3)(C2F5)] was synthesized by the reductive activation of the α-C-F bond in the perfluoro-sec-butyl-iridium complex Cp*Ir(CO)[CF(CF3)(C2F5)](I) with Na/Pb alloy. This compound exists as two geometric isomers in solution; the structure of one isomer has been determined by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study and contains two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. Further reduction of this carbene complex with Na/Pb alloy afforded the perfluoro-2-butyne iridium complex Cp*Ir(CO)(η(2)-CF3C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCF3) by an overall 2-electron reduction and elimination of two β-fluorides. When magnesium graphite was utilized as the reducing agent for the further reduction, Cp*Ir(CO)(η(2)-CF3C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCF3) was produced as a minor product and the major product was the perfluoroiridacyclobutene complex Cp*Ir(CO)(η(2,4)-CF3CCFCF2) resulting from a γ-C-F bond activation. Direct reduction of the precursor Cp*Ir(CO)[CF(CF3)(C2F5)](i) with magnesium graphite generated the tetrafluorobutatriene iridium complex Cp*Ir(CO)(η(2,3)-CF2[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]CF2) along with the perfluoro-2-butyne complex and perfluoroiridacyclobutene complexes in a ratio of 1 : 2 : 6. These reductive inner-sphere pathways to unsaturated fluorocarbon ligands illustrate that carbon-fluorine bond activation can take place at α-, β- and γ-carbons but that selectivity in these heterogeneous reductions is difficult to control, with a variety of fluoride eliminations possible for complex perfluoroalkyl ligands. Density Functional Theory (DFT/B3LYP-D3/LACV3P**++) is used to explore the relative energetics of products and intermediates in these reactions.

Herein, we report the first examples of the synthesis of pyrroloindolines by means of (3 + 2) dearomative annulation reactions between 3-substituted indoles and highly reactive azaoxyallyl cations. Computational studies using density functional theory (DFT) (B3LYP-D3/6-311G**++) support a stepwise reaction pathway in which initial C-C bond formation takes place at C3 of indole, followed by ring closure to give the observed products. Insights gleaned from these calculations indicate that the solvent, either TFE or HFIP, can stabilize the transition state through H-bonding interactions with oxygen of the azaoxyallyl cation and other relevant intermediates, thereby increasing the rates of these reactions.

Increasing the electron density in BF2-coodinated azo compounds through para-substitution leads to a bathochromic shift in their activation wavelength. When the substituent is dimethyl amine, or the like, the trans/cis isomerization process can be efficiently modulated using near infrared light. The electron donating capability of the substituent also controls the hydrolysis half-life of the switch in aqueous solution, which is drastically longer for the cis isomer, while the BF2-coodination prevents reduction by glutathione.

A diastereoselective (3 + 2) dearomative annulation of 3-substituted indoles with α-haloketones has been developed. Significant regiochemical control was observed. This methodology provides easy access to highly functionalized cyclopenta- or cyclohexa-fused indoline compounds, which are common structures of many natural products. The synthetic potential of this reaction was demonstrated in the concise syntheses of the core structures of vincorine, isocorymine, and aspidophylline A. DFT studies (B3LYP-D3/6-311++G**/MeOH) on cyclization mechanisms involving the 2-hydroxyallyl cation and its deprotonated oxyallyl cation have been performed. Under the reaction conditions, with a sparingly soluble Na2CO3 base, both species may be present and both pathways are viable. Both pathways support the formation of the experimentally observed O-bound intermediate, its transformation to the final product, the regiochemical and eventual stereochemical outcome of the kinetic cyclization product, and the thermodynamic preference for formation of the final stereoisomer.

The distinct experimentally observed regiochemistries of the reactions between mesoionic münchnones and β-nitrostyrenes or phenylacetylene are shown by DFT/BDA/ETS-NOCV analyses of the transition states to be dominated by steric and reactant reorganization factors, rather than the orbital overlap considerations predicted by Frontier Molecular Orbital (FMO) Theory.

A triazolopyridinium salt chemodosimeter has been developed that displays a 60-fold enhancement in fluorescence upon reaction with cyanide. The novel, fast, selective and sensitive reaction-based indicator relies on the pseudopericyclic ring opening of the bridgehead nitrogen-containing detector.

Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a BF(2)-azo complex that can be induced to isomerize without the need of deleterious UV light. The complexation of the azo group with BF(2), coupled with the extended conjugation of the N═N π-electrons, increases the energy of the n-π* transitions and introduces new π-nonbonding (π(nb)) to π* transitions that dominate the visible region. The well separated π(nb)-π* transitions of the trans and cis isomers enable the efficient switching of the system by using only visible light. The complexation also leads to a slow cis → trans thermal relaxation rate (t(1/2) = 12.5 h). Theoretical calculations indicate that the absorption bands in the visible range can be tuned using different Lewis acids, opening the way to a conceptually new strategy for the manipulation of azo compounds using only visible light.

Imidazole, a subunit of histidine, plays a crucial role in proton-relay processes that are important for various biological activities, such as metal efflux, viral replication and photosynthesis. We show here how an imidazolyl ring incorporated into a rotary switch based on a hydrazone enables a switching cascade that involves proton relay between two different switches. The switching process starts with a single input, zinc(II), that initiates an E/Z isomerization in the hydrazone system through a coordination-coupled proton transfer. The resulting imidazolium ring is unusually acidic and, through proton relay, activates the E/Z isomerization of a non-coordinating pyridine-containing hydrazone switch. We hypothesize that the reduction in the acid dissociation constant of the imidazolium ring results from a combination of electrostatic and conformational effects, the study of which might help elucidate the proton-coupled electron-transfer mechanism in photosynthetic bacteria.

Although the pyramidal inversion barriers in diphosphines (R(2)P-PR(2)) are similar to those in phosphines (PR(3)), P-stereogenic chiral diphosphines have rarely been exploited as building blocks in asymmetric synthesis. The synthesis, reactivity, and resolution of the benzodiphosphetane trans-1,2-(P(t-Bu))(2)C(6)H(4) are reported. Alkylation with MeOTf followed by addition of a nucleophile gave the useful C(2)-symmetric P-stereogenic ligand BenzP* and novel analogues.

A family of group 6 transition metal complexes M(C(5)R(5))(CO)(2)(CF) [M = Cr, Mo, W; R = H, Me] with terminal fluoromethylidyne ligands have been synthesized through the reduction of the corresponding trifluoromethyl precursors with potassium graphite or magnesium graphite. They have been characterized spectroscopically and in some cases crystallographically, although the structures show disorder between the CO and CF ligands. The M[triple bond]CF subunit reacts as a triple bond to form cluster complexes containing μ(3)-CF ligands on reaction with Co(2)(CO)(8). Computational (DFT/NBO/NRT) studies on M(C(5)H(5))(CO)(2)(CF) [M = Cr, Mo, W] and the corresponding cationic fragments M(CO)(2)(XY)(+) illustrate significant differences in the metal-ligand bonding between CF and its isoelectronic analogue NO, as well as with its hydrocarbon analogue CH.

Cu(I) catalysts for alkylation of diphenylphosphine were developed. Treatment of [Cu(NCMe)(4)][PF(6)] (1) with chelating ligands gave [CuL(NCMe)][PF(6)] (2; L = MeC(CH(2)PPh(2))(3) (triphos), 3; L = 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)xanthene (XantPhos)). These complexes catalyzed the alkylation of PHPh(2) with PhCH(2)Br in the presence of the base NaOSiMe(3) to yield PPh(2)CH(2)Ph (4). The precursors Cu(dtbp)(X) (dtbp =2,9-di-t-butylphenanthroline, X = Cl (5) or OTf (6)), CuCl, and 1 also catalyzed this reaction, but dtbp dissociated from 5 and 6 during catalysis. Both 2 and 3 also catalyzed alkylation of PHPh(2) with PhCH(2)Cl/NaOSiMe(3), but XantPhos dissociation was observed when 3 was used. When CH(2)Cl(2) was used as the solvent for alkylation of PhCH(2)Cl with precursors 2 or 3, or of PhCH(Me)Br with 2, it was competitively alkylated to yield PPh(2)CH(2)Cl (7), which was formed exclusively using 2 in the absence of a benzyl halide. Cu(triphos)-catalyzed alkylation of PhCH(Me)Br gave mostly PPh(2)CHMePh (8), along with some Ph(2)P-PPh(2) (9), which was also formed in attempted alkylation of dibromoethane with this catalyst. The phosphine complexes [Cu(triphos)(L')][PF(6)] (L' = PH(2)Ph (10), PH(2)CH(2)Fc (Fc = C(5)H(4)FeC(5)H(5), 11), PHPh(2) (12), PHEt(2) (13), PHCy(2) (Cy = cyclo-C(6)H(11), 14), PHMe(Is) (Is = 2,4,6-(i-Pr)(3)C(6)H(2), 15), PPh(2)CH(2)Ph (16), PPh(2)CH(2)Cl (17)), and [Cu(XantPhos)(L')][PF(6)] (L' = PHPh(2) (18), PPh(2)CH(2)Ph (19)) were prepared by treatment of 2 and 3 with appropriate ligands. Similarly, treatment of dtbp complexes 5 or 6 with PHPh(2) gave [Cu(dtbp)(PHPh(2))(X)] (X = OTf (20a) or Cl (20b)), and reaction of PPh(2)CH(2)Ph (4) with 1 formed [Cu(PPh(2)CH(2)Ph)(3)][PF(6)] (21). Complexes 2, 3, 11-14, 16, 17, 19, and 21 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Deprotonation of diphenylphosphine complex 12 in the presence of benzyl bromide gave diphenylbenzylphosphine complex 16, while deprotonation of 12 in CD(2)Cl(2) gave 17 containing a PPh(2)CD(2)Cl ligand. Low-temperature deprotonation of the soluble salt 12-[B(Ar(F))(4)] (Ar(F) = 3,5-(CF(3))(2)C(6)H(3)) in THF-d(8) gave the phosphido complex Cu(triphos)(PPh(2)) (22). Thermally unstable 22 was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and, in comparison to 12, by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which showed it contained a polarized Cu-P bond. The ligand substitution step required for catalytic turnover was observed on treatment of 16 or 17 with PHPh(2) to yield equilibrium mixtures containing 12 and the tertiary phosphines 4 or 7; equilibrium constants for these reactions were 8(2) and 7(2), favoring complexation of the smaller secondary phosphine in both cases. These observations are consistent with a proposed mechanism for catalytic P-C bond formation involving deprotonation of the cationic diphenylphosphine complex [Cu(triphos)(PHPh(2))][PF(6)] (12) by NaOSiMe(3) to yield the phosphido complex Cu(triphos)(PPh(2)) (22). Nucleophilic attack on the substrate (benzyl halide or CH(2)Cl(2)) then yields the tertiary phosphine complex [Cu(triphos)(PPh(2)CH(2)X)][PF(6)] (X = Ph (16) or Cl (17)), and ligand substitution with PHPh(2) regenerates 12.

Treatment of 2 equiv of Au(THT)Cl (THT = tetrahydrothiophene) with the bis(secondary) phosphines HP(R) approximately PH(R) (linker approximately = (CH(2))(3), R = Mes = 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2) (1), R = Is = 2,4,6-(i-Pr)(3)C(6)H(2) (2), R = Ph (4); approximately = (CH(2))(2), R = Is (3); HP(R) approximately PH(R) = 1,1'-(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)PHPh)(2)Fe (5)), gave the dinuclear complexes (AuCl)(2)(mu-HP(R) approximately PH(R)) (6-10). Dehydrohalogenation with aqueous ammonia gave the phosphido complexes [(Au)(2)(mu-P(R) approximately P(R))](n) (11-15). Ferrocenyl- and phenylphosphido derivatives 15 and 14 were insoluble; the latter was characterized by solid-state (31)P NMR spectroscopy. Isitylphosphido complexes 12 and 13 gave rise to broad, ill-defined NMR spectra. However, mesitylphosphido complex 11 was formed as a single product, which was characterized by multinuclear solution NMR spectroscopy, solid-state (31)P NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. Mass spectrometry suggested that this material contained eight gold atoms (n = 4). A structure proposed on the basis of the (1)H NMR spectra, containing a distorted cube of phosphorus atoms, was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic structure determination. NMR spectroscopy, including measurement of the hydrodynamic radius of 11 by (1)H NMR DOSY, suggested that this structure was maintained in solution. Density functional theory (DFT) structural calculations on 11 were also in good agreement with the solid-state structure.

Cp*Mo(CO)3CF3 undergoes two-electron reduction using potassium graphite or magnesium graphite to give Cp*Mo(CO)2(CF), the first example of a transition metal complex containing a terminal fluoromethylidyne ligand, which has been characterized spectroscopically, crystallographically, and computationally.

Reactions of iridium(fluoroalkyl)hydride complexes CpIr(PMe(3))(CF(2)R(F))Y (R(F) = F, CF(3); Y = H, D) with LutHX (Lut = 2,6-dimethylpyridine; X = Cl, I) results in C-F activation coupled with hydride migration to give CpIr(PMe(3))(CYFR(F))X as variable mixtures of diastereomers. Solution conformations and relative diastereomer configurations of the products have been determined by (19)F{(1)H}HOESY NMR to be (S(C), S(Ir))(R(C), R(Ir)) for the kinetic diastereomer and (R(C), S(Ir))(S(C), R(Ir)) for its thermodynamic counterpart. Isotope labeling experiments using LutDCl/CpIr(PMe(3))(CF(2)R(F))H and CpIr(PMe(3))(CF(2)R(F))D/LutHCl) showed that, unlike a previously studied system, H/D exchange is faster than protonation of the alpha-CF bond, giving an identical mixture of product isotopologues from both reaction mixtures. The kinetic rate law shows a first-order dependence on the concentration of iridium substrate, but a half-order dependence on that of LutHCl; this is interpreted to mean that LutHCl dissociates to give HCl as the active protic source for C-F bond activation. Detailed kinetic studies are reported, which demonstrate that lack of complete diastereoselectivity is not a function of the C-F bond activation/H migration steps but that a cationic intermediate plays a double role in loss of diastereoselectivity; the intermediate can undergo epimerization at iridium before being trapped by halide and can also catalyze the epimerization of kinetic diastereomer product to thermodynamic product. A detailed mechanism is proposed and simulations performed to fit the kinetic data.

Primary perfluoroalkyl compounds of iridium undergo facile two-electron reduction to afford a simple route to difluorocarbene and perfluoroalkylidene complexes, two of which have been crystallographically characterized. Low-temperature protonation reactions illustrate that the thermodynamic site of protonation depends on the nature of the fluorinated carbene; the difluorocarbene complex undergoes protonation at iridium, while its perfluoroethylidene congener undergoes protonation at carbon.

The iridium(perfluoropropyl)(vinyl) complex CpIr(PMe(3))(n-C(3)F(7))(CH=CH(2)) (5) has been prepared. It has been characterized by X-ray crystallography, and its ground state conformation in solution has been determined by (19)F{(1)H} HOESY NMR studies. It reacts with the weak acid lutidinium iodide to afford the eta(1)-allylic complex CpIr(PMe(3))((Z)-CH(2)CH=CFC(2)F(5))I (6), which has also been characterized crystallographically. The mechanism of C-F bond activation and C-C bond formation leading to 6 has been elucidated in detail by studying the reaction of 5 with lutidinium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate [LutH(+)B(ArF)(4)(-)], containing a weakly coordinating counteranion. The main kinetic product of this reaction, determined by (19)F{(1)H} HOESY studies at -50 degrees C, is the endo-CpIr(PMe(3))(anti-eta(3)-CH(2)CHCFCF(2)CF(3))[B(ArF)(4)] diastereomer 9, along with a small amount of the exo-syn-isomer 8. Isomer 9 rearranges at -20 degrees C to its exo-anti isomer 7, and subsequently to the thermodynamically favored exo-syn-isomer 8, which has been isolated and crystallographically characterized. Complex 8 reacts with iodide to afford complex6. On the basis of the unambiguously defined kinetically controlled stereochemistry of 9 and 8, a detailed mechanism for the C-F activation/C-C coupling reaction is proposed, the principal conclusion of which is that C-F activation is completely diastereoselective.

A series of palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes possessing pentafluorophenyl ligands of the general formula [M(L-L)(C6F5)Cl][space](M = Pd 3; L-L=tmeda (N,N,N',N',-tetramethylethylenediamine) a; 1,2-bis(2,6-dimethylphenylimino)ethane) b; dmpe (1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) c; dcpe (1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane) d; Pt ; L-L=tmeda a; 1,2-bis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylimino]-1,2-dimethylethane b; dmpe c; dcpe d) were readily synthesized from the dimer [M(C6F5)(tht)(mu-Cl)2] (M=Pd 1b, Pt 2b; tht=tetrahydrothiophene) and the corresponding bidentate ligand. In the case of palladium, the corresponding iodo analogues (6a-c) were readily synthesized in a one-pot reaction from [Pd2(dba)3], iodopentafluorobenzene, and the appropriate ligand. The platinum complexes 4c-d were then converted to the water complexes [Pt(L-L)(C6F5)(OH2)]OTf (L-L =dmpe 7a; dcpe 7b)via reaction with AgOTf in the presence of water. Attempts to convert the palladium complexes 3c-d to the corresponding water complexes resulted in the disproportionation of the intermediate water complex to form [Pd(L-L)(C6F5)2] (L-L=dmpe 8) or [Pd(L-L)2][OTf]2(L-L=dcpe 9). Upon standing in solution for prolonged periods, complex 7a undergoes an identical disproportionation reaction to the Pd analogues to form [Pt(L-L)(C6F5)2] (L-L=dmpe 10). Complexes 4c and 4d were converted to the corresponding hydrides (11b-c, respectively) using two different hydride sources: 11a was formed by the reaction of with NaBH4 in refluxing THF, while 11b was synthesized in near quantitative yield using [Cp2ZrH2] in refluxing THF. Attempts to synthesize eta2-tetrafluorobenzyne complexes [Pt(L-L)(C6F4)] (L-L=dmpe, dcpe) from reaction of 11a-b with butyllithium were unsuccessful. The molecular structures of 3a,4a, 4c, 4d, 6b, 7a, 8, 11b and have been determined by X-ray crystallographic studies, and are discussed.

Solution conformations about the metal-carbon bond of the secondary fluoroalkyl ligands in iridium complexes [IrCp(PMe(3))(R(F))X] [Cp* = C(5)Me(5); R(F) = CF(CF(3))(2), X = I (1), CH(3) (2); R(F) = CF(CF(3))(CF(2)CF(3)), X = I (4), CH(3) (5)] have been determined using (19)F[(1)H] HOESY techniques. The molecules adopt the staggered conformation with the tertiary fluorine in the more hindered sector between the PMe(3) and X ligands, with CF(3) (and CF(2)CF(3)) substituents lying in the less hindered regions between PMe(3) and Cp or X and Cp. In molecules containing the CF(CF(3))(2) ligand, these conformations are identical to those adopted in the solid state. For compound 4, containing the CF(CF(3))(CF(2)CF(3)) ligand, two diastereomers are observed in solution. Solution conformations and relative stereocenter configuration assignments have been obtained using (19)F[(1)H] HOESY and correlated with the X-ray structure for the major diastereomer of 4, which has the (S(Ir), S(C)) or (R(Ir), R(C)) configuration. Relative stereocenter configurations of analogue 5, for which no suitable crystals could be obtained, were assigned using (19)F[(1)H] HOESY and proved to be different from 4, with 5 preferring the (S(Ir), R(C)) or (R(Ir), S(C)) configuration.

Six-electron reduction of the perfluoro-sec-butyl ligand in Cp*Ir(PMe3)I(C4F9) with sodium naphthalenide affords the first known example of a transition metal complex of tetrafluorobutatriene, Cp*Ir(PMe3)(C4F4). The free ligand is a highly unstable compound. The compound has been completely characterized by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study; the center coordinated double bond shows significant elongation, and the flanking fluoroalkenes show significant shortening, as compared to the dimensions in the free ligand.

Reaction of Pd(TMEDA)(CH(3))(2) [TMEDA = tetramethylethylenediamine] with fluoroalkyl iodides R(F)I affords a series of square planar Pd(II) complexes Pd(TMEDA)(CH(3))(R(F)) [R(F) = CF(2)CF(3) (9), CFHCF(3) (10), CH(2)CF(3) (11)], presumably by oxidative addition followed by reductive elimination of CH(3)I. The solid-state structures of each compound have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, allowing the effect of increasing alpha-fluorination on the structural trans-influence of alkyl ligands to be examined. In these compounds there is no significant difference observed in the trans-influence of the three fluorinated alkyl ligands toward the trans-N atom, although a significant cis-influence on the neighboring methyl ligand is apparent. Oxidative addition of the same series of fluoroalkyl ligands to the corresponding Pt(TMEDA)(CH(3))(2) affords octahedral Pt(IV) complexes trans-Pt(TMEDA)(CH(3))(2)(R(F))I [R(F) = CF(2)CF(3) (12), CFHCF(3) (13), CH(2)CF(3) (14)] as the kinetic products. In each case, subsequent isomerization to the corresponding all cis-isomers is observed; in the case of 13, the stereocenter at the alpha-carbon results in two diastereomeric cis-isomers, which are formed at different rates. The molecular structures of 13 and its more stable all cis-isomer 16b have been crystallographically determined. Kinetic studies of the trans-cis isomerization reactions show the mechanism to involve a polar transition state, presumably involving iodide dissociation, followed by rearrangement of the cation, and iodide recombination. High dielectric solvents increase the rate, but solvent coordinating ability has no effect. Dissolved salts (LiI, LiOTf) show normal accelerative salt effects, with no inhibition in the case of added iodide, consistent with the formation of an intimate ion pair intermediate. The kinetic parameters show that the trans-effects of fluoroalkyl ligands in these compounds follow the order expected from the relative sigma-donor properties of the ligands, with CF(2)CF(3) < CFHCF(3) < CH(2)CF(3).

The molybdenum(II) and tungsten(II) complexes [MCp(2)L] (Cp = eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl; L = C(2)H(4), CO) react with perfluoroalkyl iodides to give a variety of products. The Mo(II) complex [MoCp(2)(C(2)H(4))] reacts with perfluoro-n-butyl iodide or perfluorobenzyl iodide with loss of ethylene to give the first examples of fluoroalkyl complexes of Mo(IV), MoCp(2)(CF(2)CF(2)CF(2)CF(3))I (8) and MoCp(2)(CF(2)C(6)F(5))I (9), one of which (8) has been crystallographically characterized. In contrast, the CO analogue [MoCp(2)(CO)] reacts with perfluorobenzyl iodide without loss of CO to give the crystallographically characterized salt, [MoCp(2)(CF(2)C(6)F(5))(CO)](+)I(-) (10), and the W(II) ethylene precursor [WCp(2)(C(2)H(4))] reacts with perfluorobenzyl iodide without loss of ethylene to afford the salt [WCp(2)(CF(2)C(6)F(5))(C(2)H(4))](+)I(-) (11). These observations demonstrate that the metal-carbon bond is formed first. In further contrast the tungsten precursor [WCp(2)(C(2)H(4))] reacts with perfluoro-n-butyl iodide, perfluoro-iso-propyl iodide, and pentafluorophenyl iodide to give fluoroalkyl- and fluorophenyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl complexes WCp(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)R(F))(H)I (12, R(F) = CF(2)CF(2)CF(2)CF(3); 15, R(F) = CF(CF(3))(2); 16, R(F) = C(6)F(5)); the Mo analogue MoCp(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)R(F))(H)I (14, R(F) = CF(CF(3))(2)) is obtained in similar fashion. The tungsten(IV) hydrido compounds react with iodoform to afford the corresponding diiodides WCp(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)R(F))I(2) (13, R(F) = CF(2)CF(2)CF(2)CF(3); 18, R(F) = CF(CF(3))(2); 19, R(F) = C(6)F(5)), two of which (13 and 19) have been crystallographically characterized. The carbonyl precursors [MCp(2)(CO)] each react with perfluoro-iso-propyl iodide without loss of CO, to afford the exo-fluoroalkylated cyclopentadiene M(II) complexes MCp(eta(4)-C(5)H(5)R(F))(CO)I (21, M = Mo; 22, M = W); the exo-stereochemistry for the fluoroalkyl group is confirmed by an X-ray structural study of 22. The ethylene analogues [MCp(2)(C(2)H(4))] react with perfluoro-tert-butyl iodide to yield the products MCp(2)[(CH(2)CH(2)C(CF(3))(3)]I (25, M = Mo; 26, M = W) resulting from fluoroalkylation at the ethylene ligand. Attempts to provide positive evidence for fluoroalkyl radicals as intermediates in reactions of primary and benzylic substrates were unsuccessful, but trapping experiments with CH(3)OD (to give R(F)D, not R(F)H) indicate that fluoroalkyl anions are the intermediates responsible for ring and ethylene fluoroalkylation in the reactions of secondary and tertiary fluoroalkyl substrates.
