The Willwood Formation of the Bighorn Basin (Wyoming, USA) is a thick succession of upper Paleocene and lower Eocene fluvial-floodplain sandstones and mudstones. Reddish paleosols, formed on the floodplain mudstones, alternate rhythmically on various scales with heterolithic intervals of small-channel sandstones and mudstones showing weak pedogenesis. Spectral analysis of redness in the Willwood successions at Polecat Bench and Red Butte reveals significant spectral peaks corresponding to cycle thicknesses of ~8 and ~3 m. The ~8 m cycle reflects distinct clusters of 3-5 paleosols. Age constraints show that the period of this cycle closely matches the ~21 k.y. climatic precession cycle. The ~3 m cycle corresponds to individual paleosols, with a period of 7-8 k.y. This period is similar to millennial-scale sub-Milankovitch cycles found in marine and lacustrine successions of Pliocene-Pleistocene age. Precession and millennial-scale climate variations probably affected paleosol development through cyclic changes from predominantly overbank to predominantly channel-avulsion deposition, with the latter periodically halting soil formation because of high sediment accumulation. A new age model was developed for the Paleocene-Eocene carbon isotope excursion (CIE) at Polecat Bench, based on the precessional origin of paleosol clusters. The main body of the CIE spans ~5.5 precession cycles, or ~115 k.y., and the recovery tail of the CIE spans 2 precession cycles, or ~42 k.y. This outcome is consistent with, and independently confirms, recent estimates of CIE duration based on deep-sea cores. Cyclic sedimentary patterns in the marine record of the Mediterranean Sea have been consistently correlated with orbitally‐driven shifts in climate. Freshwater input driven by the African summer monsoon is thought to be the main control of such hydrological changes, where the runoff signal is transferred from the eastern to the western Mediterranean. The geological record from the Atlantic margin also contains precession‐driven dilution cycles that have been correlated with the sedimentary sequences in the western and eastern Mediterranean despite the lack of a direct connection with the basin. In these regions, Atlantic winter storms have also been invoked to explain the wet phases. In the absence of seasonally‐resolved proxy data, climate simulations at high temporal resolution can be used to investigate the drivers of Mediterranean hydrologic changes both on precessional and seasonal timescales. Here, we use the results of 22 ocean‐atmosphere‐vegetation simulations through an entire late Miocene precession cycle. These show that the African summer monsoon drives the hydrologic budget in the Eastern Mediterranean during precession minima, while the western marginal basins are generally dominated by local net evaporative loss. During precession minima, the western Mediterranean and the Atlantic margin are also influenced by enhanced winter precipitation from the Atlantic storm tracks. We can, therefore, identify two different moisture sources affecting the circum‐Mediterranean area, characterized by the same phasing with respect to precession, but with opposite seasonality. This supports the interregional correlation of geological sections in these areas, as we show for the Messinian and speculate for other time periods. Astronomical tuning of sediment sequences requires both unambiguous cycle pattern recognition in climate proxy records and astronomical solutions, as well as independent information about the phase relationship between these two. Here we present two different astronomically tuned age models for the Oligocene-Miocene transition (OMT) from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1334 (equatorial Pacific Ocean) to assess the effect tuning has on astronomically calibrated ages and the geologic timescale. These alternative age models (roughly from ~ 22 to ~ 24 Ma) are based on different tunings between proxy records and eccentricity: the first age model is based on an aligning CaCO3 weight (wt%) to Earth's orbital eccentricity, and the second age model is based on a direct age calibration of benthic foraminiferal stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) to eccentricity. To independently test which tuned age model and associated tuning assumptions are in best agreement with independent ages based on tectonic plate-pair spreading rates, we assign the tuned ages to magnetostratigraphic reversals identified in deep-marine magnetic anomaly profiles. Subsequently, we compute tectonic plate-pair spreading rates based on the tuned ages. The resultant alternative spreading-rate histories indicate that the CaCO3 tuned age model is most consistent with a conservative assumption of constant, or linearly changing, spreading rates. The CaCO3 tuned age model thus provides robust ages and durations for polarity chrons C6Bn.1n-C7n.1r, which are not based on astronomical tuning in the latest iteration of the geologic timescale. Furthermore, it provides independent evidence that the relatively large (several 10 000 years) time lags documented in the benthic foraminiferal isotope records relative to orbital eccentricity constitute a real feature of the Oligocene-Miocene climate system and carbon cycle. The age constraints from Site U1334 thus indicate that the delayed responses of the Oligocene-Miocene climate-cryosphere system and (marine) carbon cycle resulted from highly nonlinear feedbacks to astronomical forcing. Our results prove that glacio-eustatic sea level oscillations in the early Oligocene were dominantly obliquity controlled with additional influence of the ∼100- and 405-kyr eccentricity cycles. This was derived from spectral analysis of resistivity records from an extended downhole section of the Boom Clay succession in Belgium, that reveals a prevailing obliquity control on the laterally persistent metre-scale alternations of shallow marine silt- and claystones in the Rupelian historical stratotype succession. These direct measurements of sea level variations in a shallow marine setting corroborate that variations with similar frequencies in benthonic oxygen isotope records from the open ocean indeed reflect, at least partly, ice volume change. A very tentative astronomical tuning has been established for the Boom Clay succession which awaits future confirmation with the addition of more accurate age calibration points.
