Pegmatitic deposits of critical metals (e.g., Li, Ta, Be) are becoming increasingly significant, with growing interest in understanding metal enrichment processes and potential vectors to aid the discovery of new resources. In southeast Ireland, the Leinster pegmatite belt comprises several largely concealed Li-Cs-Ta albite-spodumene-type pegmatites. We carried out detailed mineralogical characterization and whole-rock geochemical analyses of six drill cores intersecting pegmatite bodies and their country rocks. Exomorphic halos 2–6 m thick, enriched in Li, Rb, Be, B, Cs, Sn and Ta, are identified in both mica schists and granitic rocks adjacent to spodumene pegmatites. Metasomatism in wall rocks visible to the naked eye is restricted to a few tens of centimeters, suggesting country rock permeability plays a key role in the dispersion of these fluids. We propose that halos result from the discharge of rare element-rich residual fluids exsolved near the end of pegmatite crystallization. Halo geochemistry reflects the internal evolution of the crystallizing pegmatite system, with residual fluid rich in incompatible elements accumulated by geochemical fractionation (Be, B, Cs, Sn, Ta) and by auto-metasomatic resorption of spodumene and K-feldspar (Li, Rb). The possibility of identifying rare-element enrichment trends by analysis of bedrock, stream sediments and soils brings opportunities for mineral exploration strategies in Ireland and for similar albite-spodumene pegmatites worldwide. Interrupted time series analysis involves repeated observations on a single unit both preceding and following an intervention. Recently developed statistical procedures permit inferential statements about the degree and pattern of the intervention effect. Five different software packages appropriate for interrupted time series analysis were evaluated: TSX, GENTS, BMDP, SAS, and ITSE. Simulated data was generated from 44 types of series representing eleven different ARIMA models, two types of intervention, and two different series' lengths. The five programs are compared with respect to the accuracy of estimation of the error variance, pre-intervention level, post-intervention level, and slope estimates (where appropriate). Three programs produced generally satisfactory results (TSX, GENTS, and SAS), one was generally inaccurate across a wide range of models (ITSE), and one produced some inaccuracies and occasionally failed to complete the analysis (BMDP). Authors say that the analyst J. Timothy Stocks has carefully examined their recent report on trends in family violence and has pointed to some important methodological issues and problems. The presentation and publication of the results of both their first and second National Family Violence Surveys raised a storm of comment and controversy. A sample of this size was necessary because, if it had been smaller, even an increase or decrease of 20% in the violence rate would not have been statistically significant. However, from a practical point of view, anyone who has attempted to interview low-income, inner-city residents knows that the completion rate for face-to-face interviews is low. Thus, there is little practical evidence that the sampling frames in the two surveys were different. The category of house-holds excluded from the second survey were in all likelihood not reached in the first survey either-even though they were theoretically available in the sampling frame.

The most widely employed procedure for interrupted time series analysis consists of a two-step procedure: (1) determining the ARIMA model by examining the pattern of autocorrelations and partial autocorrelations; and (2) employing a general linear model solution after the effect of dependency has been removed. In order to determine the reliability and accuracy of model identification, 12 extensively trained subjects were each asked to identify 32 different computer generated time series. Six commonly occurring models were employed with different levels of dependency (high, medium, or low) and different numbers of data points (N=40 and N=100). On April 7, 1919, almost exactly two years after the United States had entered World War I, the Vieux-Colombier theatre gave its final performance in New York, where it had spent the last eighteen months of the war presenting two seasons of repertory. The rather surprising presence of Jacques Copeau's troupe in New York at this time can be largely attributed to the war itself. Copeau had first been dispatched on a lecture tour in January of 1917 by the French Ministry of Fine Arts, with the aim of “countering German propaganda in the realm of culture,” strengthening ties between France and the United States, and stemming the tide of pro-German feeling then running in America. Though Copeau had already performed a similar task in Switzerland and was aware of the significance of his brief, his approach was subtle. Clayton Hamilton tells us that in the six lectures he delivered Copeau “talked to us of art and Molière, and said no word about the war … talked to us only about Truth and Beauty in the midst of many things succumbing momentarily to death. Background: Clinical assessment of vitamin D status often relies on measuring total circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3), but much of each vitamin D metabolite is bound to plasma vitamin D-binding protein (DBP), such that the percentage of free vitamin is very low. We hypothesized that measurement of free rather than total 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] and 25OHD3 may provide better assessment of vitamin D status. We therefore aimed to assess vitamin D status in men with idiopathic osteoporosis, in whom possible secondary causes of osteoporosis had been excluded, and to determine the extent of change in biologically active "free" vitamin D caused by variation in plasma DBP concentrations., Methods: We measured 1,25(OH)2D3 and 25OHD3 in plasma samples from 56 men with idiopathic osteoporosis [mean (SD) age, 59.6 (13.6) years; range, 21-86 years] and 114 male controls [62.4 (10.4) years; range, 44-82 years]., Results: Mean total plasma 25OHD3 in the 56 men with osteoporosis and the 114 controls was 44.7 (21) and 43.3 (17) nmol/L, respectively; total plasma 1,25(OH)2D3 measured in randomly selected men with osteoporosis (n = 50) and controls (n = 50) was 90 (37) and 103 (39) pmol/L, respectively. Mean plasma DBP was significantly higher (P <0.001) in men with osteoporosis [224 (62) mg/L; n = 56] than in the controls [143 (34) mg/L; n = 114], but calculated free plasma 25OHD3 and 1,25(OH)2D3 were significantly lower in the osteoporotic men than in controls [6.1 (3.1) vs 9.1 (4.4) pmol/L (P <0.00001) and 77 (37) vs 142 (58) fmol/L (P <0.00001), respectively]., Conclusions: Measurement of total vitamin D metabolites alone, although providing a crude assessment of vitamin D status, may not give an accurate indication of the free (biologically active) form of the vitamin. The ratio of total 25OHD3 and 1,25(OH)2D3 to plasma DBP, rather than total circulating vitamin D metabolites, may provide a more useful index of biological activity. Further studies are required to substantiate this hypothesis.
