Topography and geology are factors to characterize the distribution of natural vegetation. Topographic contour is particularly influential on the living conditions of plants such as soil moisture, sunlight, and windiness. Vegetation associations having similar characteristics are present in locations having similar topographic conditions unless natural disturbances such as landslides and forest fires or artificial disturbances such as deforestation and man-made plantation bring about changes in such conditions. We developed a vegetation map of Japan using an object-based segmentation approach with topographic information (elevation, slope, slope direction) that is closely related to the distribution of vegetation. The Great East Japan Earthquake (magnitude 9.0; occurred on 11th March 2011) and subsequent huge tsunami caused widespread damage along the Pacific Ocean coast of eastern Honshu, Japan. This research utilizes multi-resolution remote sensing images to clarify the impact on landscapes caused by this disaster, and also to monitor the subsequent survival and recovery process in the Sendai Bay region. The coastal landscape in the target area features a narrow strip of coastal sand barrier, historically stabilized by planted pine groves; backed by a low-lying plain that has traditionally been diked and converted to irrigated rice paddies. Farmsteads on the flat alluvial plain are surrounded by groves called "Igune", consisting primarily of conifers. MODIS data (250 m resolution) were employed to map the overall extent of inundation and damage on the regional landscape scale. The major damage caused by the tsunami, destruction of coastal pine forests and inundation or rice paddies on the plain, was identified at this level. Progressively finer scale analysis were then implemented using SPOT/HRG-2 (10 m resolution) data; GeoEye-1 fine resolution data (0.5 m) and very fine resolution aerial photographs (10 cm) and LiDAR. These results demonstrated the minute details of the damage and recovery process. Some patches of pine forest, for example, were seen to have survived, and some coastal plant communities were already recovering only a year after the disaster. Continuous monitoring using field work and remote sensing is required for balanced regional strategies that provide for economic and social recovery and as well as restoration of vegetation, biodiversity and vital ecosystem services. Vegetation and land cover in Japan are rapidly changing. Abandoned farmland in 2010, for example, was 396,000 ha, or triple that of 1985. Efficient monitoring of changes in land cover is vital to both conservation of biodiversity and sustainable regional development. The Ministry of Environment is currently producing 1/25,000 scale vegetation maps for all of Japan, but the work is not yet completed. Traditional research is time consuming, and has difficulty coping with the rapid nature of change in the modern world. In this situation, classification of various scale remotely sensed data can be of premier use for efficient and timely monitoring of changes in vegetation.. In this research Terra/MODIS data is utilized to classify land cover in all of eastern Japan. Emphasis is placed on the Tohoku area, where large scale and rapid changes in vegetation have occurred in the aftermath of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011. Large sections of coastal forest and agricultural lands, for example, were directly damaged by the earthquake or inundated by subsequent tsunami. Agricultural land was also abandoned due to radioactive contamination from the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. The classification results are interpreted within the framework of a Landscape Transformation Sere model developed by Hara et al (2010), which presents a multi-staged pattern for tracking vegetation changes under successively heavy levels of human interference. The static spin structure factor S ( Q ) of CuGeO 3 was determined above its spin-Peierls transition temperature by inelastic neutron scattering. At 20 K, S ( Q ) has a Lorentzian line shape centered at the antiferromagnetic (AF) zone center. With increasing temperature, however, it splits into two peaks with their centers at incommensurate wave vectors at higher temperatures (70 and 120 K). The observed results are consistent with the prediction by recent numerical studies on the S =1/2 Heisenberg AF chain with competing spin interactions [I. Harada and Y. Recent progress of the theoretical interpretation for the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the rare-earth (RE) L2,3 absorption edges is reviewed. We discuss the XMCD spectra of RFe2 (R = RE) in the Laves phase based on the tight-binding approximation for RE 5d and Fe 3d conducting states. A variety of the XMCD spectra can be attributed to (i) the electric dipole and (ii) the electric quadrupole transitions. For (i), the polarization of the RE 5d electrons, being indispensable for XMCD, is dominated by the RE intra-atomic exchange interaction, which also yields the enhancement of the 2p–5d dipole matrix element. In addition, the hybridization with the spin-polarized Fe 3d states plays a distinctive role. For (ii), the multiplet couplings among the 4f electrons and the 2p core hole determine the XMCD spectra. We also consider XMCD in the mixed valence compound CeFe2, taking many-body interactions into account based on the impurity Anderson model combined with a cluster approximation. We applied microsatellite analysis to prenatal diagnosis of Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy (FCMD), an autosomal recessive severe muscular dystrophy associated with brain malformations. Recent identification of the FCMD gene locus at 9q31-q33 provided the basis for prenatal diagnosis and carrier detection. We recently developed new microsatellite markers which are closer to the FCMD gene and improved the phenotype probability. Nine fetuses in eight unrelated FCMD families, including a twin pregnancy, were analysed using the newly developed markers. Four fetuses showed over 99% probability of being healthy either as normal homozygote (n = 1) or heterozygote carrier (n = 3) and were born without signs of FCMD. The other five fetuses were diagnosed with a probability of FCMD of 99% or greater; all of the latter parents decided to terminate the pregnancies. Brain malformations characteristic of FCMD in one of the aborted fetuses confirmed the diagnosis of FCMD at 19 weeks of gestation. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The diagnosis is often difficult because of the morphological similarity to a partial mole, but is crucial to management in the postmolar course. We present a case of molar pregnancy coexisting with a fetus in which DNA polymorphism analysis revealed a different genetic origin for the fetal and molar parts. This is the only known case of a complete mole in a twin pregnancy complicated by pre-eclampsia followed by maternal pulmonary oedema. During follow-up, the patient developed a clinically invasive mole which was successfully treated with chemotherapy. Japan, with over 75% forest cover, is one of the most heavily forested countries in the world. Various types of climax forest are distributed according to latitude and altitude. At the same time, human intervention in Japan has historically been intensive, and many forest habitats show the influence of various levels of disturbance. Furthermore, Japanese landscapes are changing rapidly, and a system of efficient monitoring is needed. The aim of this research was to identify major historical trends in Japanese landscape change and to develop a system for identifying and monitoring patterns of landscape change at the national level. To provide a base for comparison, Warmth Index (WI) climatic data was digitalized and utilized to map potential climax vegetation for all of Japan. Extant Land Use Information System (LUIS) data were then modified and digitalized to generate national level Land Use/Land Cover (LU/LC) distribution maps for 1900, 1950 and 1985. In addition, MODIS data for 2001 acquired by the Tokyo University of Information Sciences were utilized for remote LU/LC classification using an unsupervised method on multi-temporal composite data. Eight classification categories were established using the ISODATA (cluster analyses) method; alpine plant communities, evergreen coniferous forest, evergreen broad-leaved forest, deciduous broad-leaved forest, mixed forest, arable land (irrigated rice paddy, non-irrigated, grassland), urban area, river and marsh. The results of the LUIS analyses and MODIS classifications were interpreted in terms of a Landscape Transformation Sere model assuming that under increasing levels of human disturbance the landscape will change through a series of stages. The results showed that overall forest cover in Japan has actually increased over the century covered by the data; from 72.1% in 1900 to 76.9% in 2001. Comparison of the actual vegetation and the potential vegetation as predicted by WI, however, indicated that in many areas the climax vegetation has been replaced by secondary forests such as conifer timber plantations. This trend was especially strong in the warm and mid temperate zones of western Japan. This research also demonstrated that classification of moderate resolution remote sensing data, interpreted within a LTS framework, can be an effective tool for efficient and repeat monitoring of landscape changes at the national level. In the future, the authors plan to continue utilizing this approach to track rapidly occurring changes in Japanese landscapes at the national level.
