To reduce the cost of small wind turbines, a prototype of a butterfly wind turbine (6.92 m in diameter), a small vertical-axis type, was developed with many parts made of extruded aluminum suitable for mass production. An overspeed control system with movable arms that operated using centrifugal and aerodynamic forces was installed for further cost reduction. Introducing this mechanism eliminates the need for large active brakes and expands the operating wind speed range of the wind turbine. However, although the mechanism involving the use of only bearings is simple, the violent movement of the movable arms can be a challenge. To address this in the present study, dampers were introduced on the movable arm rotation axes to improve the movement of the movable arms. To predict the behavior of a movable arm and the performance of the wind turbine with the mechanism, a simulation method was developed based on the blade element momentum theory and the equation of motion of the movable arm system. A comparison of experiments and predictions with and without dampers demonstrated qualitative agreement. In the case with dampers, measurements confirmed the predicted increase in the rotor rotational speed when the shorter ailerons installed perpendicularly to the movable arms were used to achieve the inclination. Field experiments of the generated power at a wind speed of 6 m/s (10 min average) showed relative performance improvements of 11.4% by installing dampers, 91.3% by shortening the aileron length, and 57.6% by changing the control target data. Many vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) require arms, which generally provide aerodynamic resistance, to connect the main blades to the rotating shaft. Three–dimensional numerical simulations were conducted to clarify the effects of a gap placed at the blade–arm connection portion on VAWT performance. A VAWT with two straight blades (diameter: 0.75 m, height: 0.5 m) was used as the calculation model. Two horizontal arms were assumed to be connected to the blade of the model with or without a gap. A cylindrical rod with a diameter of 1 or 5 mm was installed in the gap, and its length varied from 10 to 30 mm. The arm cross section has the same airfoil shape (NACA 0018) as the main blade; however, the chord length is half (0.04 m) that of the blade. The simulation shows that the power of the VAWT with gaps is higher than that of the gapless VAWT. The longer gap length tends to decrease the power, and increasing the diameter of the connecting rod amplifies this decreasing tendency. Providing a short gap at the blade–arm connection and decreasing the cross–sectional area of the connecting member is effective in increasing VAWT power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To elucidate the wind-direction dependence of the rotor performance in closely spaced vertical-axis wind turbines, wind-tunnel experiments were performed at a uniform wind velocity. In the experiments, a pair/trio of three-dimensional printed model turbines with a diameter of D = 50 mm was used. The experiments were performed systematically by applying incremental adjustments to the rotor gap g and rotational direction of each rotor and by changing the wind direction. For tandem layouts, the rotational speed of the downwind rotor is 75–80% that of an isolated rotor, even at g/D = 10. For the average rotational speed of the rotor pair, an origin-symmetrical and a line-symmetrical distribution are observed in the co-rotating and inverse-rotating configurations, respectively, thereby demonstrating the wind-direction dependence for the rotor pair. The inverse-rotating trio configuration yields a higher average rotational speed than the co-rotating trio configuration for any rotor spacing under the ideal bidirectional wind conditions. The maximum average rotational speed should be obtained for a wind direction of θ = 0° in the inverse-rotating trio configuration. The wind-direction dependence of the rotational speeds of the three turbines was explained via flow visualization using a smoke-wire method and velocity field study using two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics. Recently, wind farms consisting of clusters of closely spaced vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have attracted the interest of many people. In this study, a method using a wake model to predict the flow field and the output power of each rotor in a VAWT cluster is proposed. The method uses the information obtained by the preliminary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) targeting an isolated single two-dimensional (2D) VAWT rotor and a few layouts of the paired 2D rotors. In the method, the resultant rotor and flow conditions are determined so as to satisfy the momentum balance in the main wind direction. The pressure loss of the control volume (CV) is given by an interaction model which modifies the prepared information on a single rotor case and assumes the dependence on the inter-rotor distance and the induced velocity. The interaction model consists of four equations depending on the typical four-type layouts of selected two rotors. To obtain the appropriate circulation of each rotor, the searching range of the circulation is limited according to the distribution of other rotors around the rotor at issue. The method can predict the rotor powers in a 2D-VAWT cluster including a few rotors in an incomparably shorter time than the CFD analysis using a dynamic model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The phase-synchronized rotation of a pair of closely spaced vertical-axis wind turbines has been found in wind tunnel experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. During phase synchronization, the two wind turbine rotors rotate inversely at the same mean angular velocity. The blades of the two rotors pass through the gap between the turbines almost simultaneously, while the angular velocities oscillate with a small amplitude. A pressure drop in the gap region, explained by Bernoulli's law, has been proposed to generate the interaction torque required for phase synchronization. In this study, an analytical model of the interaction torques was developed. In our simulations using the model, (i) phase synchronization occurred, (ii) the angular velocities of the rotors oscillated during the phase synchronization, and (iii) the oscillation period became shorter and the amplitude became larger as the interaction became stronger. These observations agree qualitatively with the experiments and CFD simulations. Phase synchronization was found to occur even for a pair of rotors with slightly different torque characteristics. Our simulation also shows that the induced flow velocities influence the dependence of the angular velocities during phase synchronization on the rotation directions of the rotors and the distance between the rotors. This research investigates the cause of lifetime reduction properties of a crystalline defect layer introduced by the plasma process such as reactive plasma deposition (RPD). The plasma irradiation damage to silicon substrate with the different oxygen and carbon concentrations were evaluated. Minority carrier lifetime of the silicon substrate after the RPD process has been significantly reduced by plasma irradiation. Furthermore, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy revealed that the cause of the lifetime degradation on the silicon substrate is Ci–Oi defect generation originated in the plasma irradiation during the RPD process. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) are unaffected by changes in wind direction, and they have a simple structure and the potential for high efficiency due to their lift driving force. However, VAWTs are affected by changes in wind speed, owing to effects originating from the moment of inertia. In this study, changes in the rotational speed of a small VAWT in pulsating wind, generated by an unsteady wind tunnel, are investigated by varying the wind cycle and amplitude parameters. It is shown that the responses observed experimentally agree with simulations based on torque characteristics obtained under steady rotational conditions. Additionally, a simple equation expressing the relationship between the rotational change width and amplitude of the pulsating wind is presented. The energy efficiency in a pulsating wind remains constant with changes in both the moment of inertia and the wind cycle; however, the energy efficiency decreases when the wind amplitude is large. This study aimed to determine the optimal rotor spacing of two vertical-axis wind turbines, which are simulated by miniature models arranged side-by-side with a relatively low aspect ratio. Wind tunnel experiments with a pair of 3-D printed model rotors were conducted at a uniform velocity. A series of experiments were conducted involving both incremental adjustments to the rotor gaps, g, and the rotational direction of each rotor. Increases in the power and the related flow patterns were observed in all three arrangements: Co-Rotating (CO), Counter-Up (CU), and Counter-Down (CD). The maximum phase-synchronized rotational speed occurs at the narrowest gap in the CD arrangement. Meanwhile, local maxima arise in the CO and CU arrangements at g/D < 1, where D is the rotor diameter. From an engineering perspective, the optimal rotor spacing is g/D = 0.2 with the CO arrangement, using the same two rotors rotating in the same direction. Based on flow visualization using a smoke-wire method at a narrower gap opening of 0.2D, the wake width in the case of the CU arrangement was remarkably narrower than those obtained in the CO and CD arrangements. In the CU arrangement, a movement towards the center of the rotor pair of the nominal front-stagnation point of each rotor was confirmed via flow visualization. The fact that outdoor light environment is an important suppressive factor against myopia led us to invent violet light-transmitting eyeglasses (VL glasses) which can transmit violet light (VL), 360–400 nm in wavelength, for the suppression of myopia, and can meanwhile block harmful ultraviolet waves from sunlight. The current study is a double-blinded randomized clinical trial to investigate the myopia-suppressive effect of VL glasses compared to conventional eyeglasses (placebo glasses) that do not transmit VL. The subjects were children aged from 6 to 12 years old, the population in which myopia progression is generally accelerated, and the myopia suppressive effect was followed up for two years in a city in Japan. Periodical ophthalmic examinations, interviews, and measurements of reflection and axial length under mydriasis were performed at the initial visit (the baseline) and at 1, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. The mean change in axial length in the VL glasses group was significantly smaller than in the placebo glasses group when time for near-work was less than 180 min and when the subjects were limited to those who had never used eyeglasses before this trial (p < 0.01); however, this change was not significant without subgrouping. To investigate the optimum layouts of small vertical-axis wind turbines, a two-dimensional analysis of dynamic fluid body interaction is performed via computational fluid dynamics for a rotor pair in various configurations. The rotational speed of each turbine rotor (diameter: D = 50 mm) varies based on the equation of motion. First, the dependence of rotor performance on the gap distance (gap) between two rotors is investigated. For parallel layouts, counter-down (CD) layouts with blades moving downwind in the gap region yield a higher mean power than counter-up (CU) layouts with blades moving upwind in the gap region. CD layouts with gap/D = 0.5–1.0 yield a maximum average power that is 23% higher than that of an isolated single rotor. Assuming isotropic bidirectional wind speed, co-rotating (CO) layouts with the same rotational direction are superior to the combination of CD and CU layouts regardless of the gap distance. For tandem layouts, the inverse-rotation (IR) configuration shows an earlier wake recovery than the CO configuration. For 16-wind-direction layouts, both the IR and CO configurations indicate similar power distribution at gap/D = 2.0. Most vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) need arms connecting the blades with the rotational axis. The arms increase the power loss of VAWTs; however, the distribution between the pressure and friction influences and their degrees of influence have not yet been investigated in detail in past research. We applied computational fluid dynamics (CFD) targeting a small-sized straight-bladed VAWT to elucidate the effects of arms on turbine performance. In the analysis, three kinds of arms with different cross-sections (NACA 0018 airfoil, 18% rectangular, circular) with the same height were added to an armless rotor. The tangential forces and resistance torques caused by the added arms were recalculated by dividing the pressure and friction influences based on the surface pressure and friction distributions obtained by the CFD on an arm or a blade. The pressure-based tangential force of an arm, regardless of the cross-section, had a tendency to increase near the connection part between the arm and a blade. Though the value was small, the friction on the rectangular arm generated a driving force, whereas the friction on the other arms generated resistance forces. The pressure-based tangential force of a blade increased for a wide region around the connection part. The friction-based tangential force of a blade dropped around the connection part of every arm-equipped rotor. The arm resistance torque added to a VAWT by the existence of arms was larger than the added blade resistance torque in the cases of rectangular and circular arm rotors. Purpose: To assess the alterations of the tear film lipid layer and tear functions in patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) and to compare the results with healthy control subjects., Methods: Seventy-eight eyes of 39 consecutive patients diagnosed as SAC (mean age 32.6 years; 11 male, 28 female) as well as 20 eyes of 10 healthy control subjects (mean age 32.5 years; 6 male, 4 female) underwent slit-lamp examinations, tear film breakup time measurements (BUT), corneal fluorescein stain scoring, Schirmer test, and tear film lipid layer interferometry. The 2 groups were then compared for the examined parameters. RAST and serum IgE level evaluations were also carried out in the patients to confirm the diagnosis of allergy., Results: The mean BUT was 3.4 +/- 1.5 seconds in patients with SAC compared with the mean value of 12.4 +/- 2.4 seconds in the controls (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in relation to Schirmer test values between the 2 groups; 78% of the patients with SAC had grade 3 or above dry eye change in tear film lipid layer interferometry, whereas none of the controls had an interferometry grade greater than 3 (grade 1-2 normal; grade 3-4 dry eye; grade 5 severe dry eye). Eyes with SAC had significantly higher tear film lipid layer thickness ranges compared with the control eyes (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: SAC was associated with advanced tear instability and thickening of the tear film lipid layer. Evaluation of the tear film lipid layer thickness might be useful in the assessment of the extent of dry eye disease and the treatment outcomes in patients with allergy.
