The sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean heat content in the Korea Waters are gradually increased. Especially the increasing trend of annual mean SST in the Korea Water is higher about 2.6 times than the global mean during past 55 years (1968–2022). Before 2010s, the increasing trend of SST was led by winter season in the Korea Waters. However, this pattern was clearly changed after 2010s. The increasing trend of SST during summer is higher about 3.9 times than during winter after 2010s. We examine the long-term variations of several ocean and climate factors to understand the reasons for the long-term pattern changes of SST between summer and winter in recent. Tsushima warm current was significantly strengthened in summer compare to winter during past 33 years (1986–2018). The long-term patterns of Siberian High and East Asian Winter Monsoon were definitely changed before and after early- or mid-2000s. The intensities of those two climate factors was changed to the increasing trend or weakened decreasing trend from the distinctive decreasing trend. In addition, the extreme weather condition like the heatwave days and cold spell days in the Korea significantly increased since mid- or late-2000s. From these results, we can consider that the occurrences of frequent and intensified marine heatwaves during summer and marine cold spells during winter in the Korea Waters might be related with the long-term pattern change of SST, which should be caused by the long-term change of climate factors and advection heat, in a few decade.

The Korea Strait (KS) is a crucial marine passage for transporting heat, salt, and materials from the South Sea to the East Sea. The Tsushima Warm Water (TWW) and Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW) are major water masses that flow across the strait, but their effects on prokaryotic communities have been unclear. We used high-throughput sequencing to study the impact of TWW and KSBCW on prokaryotic composition and metabolic changes in the upper (0–50m; UL), middle (50–75m; ML), and bottom (75–150m; BL) layers during the fall of 2018 and 2019. The results showed that the UL had a freshwater influence from Changjiang Diluted Water in 2019, altering prokaryotic compositions and metabolic potentials. The KSBCW in the BL transported new bacterial communities with unique metabolic characteristics. Key genes involved in carbon metabolism had water mass impacts, preferring lower saline and temperature environments, and carbon fixation potential shifted from phototrophs in 2018 to chemotrophs in 2019. Temperature changes induced acclimation processes producing heat- and cold-shock genes/proteins. Our findings indicate that the freshwater influence and KSBCW modified the prokaryotic composition and metabolic function differentially. These results are important in understanding the relationship between water masses and ongoing environmental changes in this understudied region.

Using geographic sea surface current data, long-term changes in spatial and temporal variations in the Kuroshio Current 1993–2021 were analyzed, and the relationship between the Kuroshio Current and oceanic conditions, such as water column structure and intensity of East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) in the western part of the East Sea (WES), was investigated. Long-term changes in the Kuroshio Current intensity were positively correlated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and East Asian Winter Monsoon indices. When the Kuroshio Current was strong, its main axis passing around the Ryukyu Islands moved eastward, and the intensity of EKWC separated from the Kuroshio Current and flowed into the WES, indicating weakened conditions. When the intensity of the EKWC was weakened, its main axis moved away from the inshore area of the WES. As a result, the vertical distribution range of the cold and low saline water mass located in the bottom layer extended to shallower depths in the inshore area of the WES with increasing chlorophyll-a.

The western part of East/Japan Sea (WES) is an important area for understanding climate change processes and interactions between atmospheric and oceanic conditions. We analyzed the trends in recent oceanic conditions in the WES after the recent climate regime shift (CRS) that occurred in the late 1990s in the North Pacific. We explored the most important climate factors that affect oceanic conditions and determined their responses to changes in climate change. In the CRS that occurred in the late 1980s, changes in oceanic conditions in the WES were influenced by intensity changes in climate factors, and, in the late 1990s, it was by spatial changes in climate factors. The latitudinal shift of the Aleutian low (AL) pressure influences recent changes in oceanic and atmospheric conditions in the WES. The intensity of the Kuroshio Current and the sea level pressure in the Kuroshio extension region associated with the latitudinal shift of the AL pressure affects the volume of transport of the warm and saline water mass that flows into the WES and its atmospheric conditions. In addition, the fluctuations in the oceanic conditions of the WES affect various regions and depth layers differently, and these variations are evident even within the WES.

This study examined the dietary patterns of walleye pollock, Gadus chalcogrammus, off the middle eastern coast of Korea between January 2016 and December 2017 to determine the influences of various predictors on dietary changes. Based on stomach content analyses, walleye pollock was found to be a demersal carnivore that mainly consumes carid shrimps, euphausiids, mysids, teleosts, and cephalopods. The main prey species identified in the diets of walleye pollock were Euphausia pacifica (euphausiids), Themisto japonicus (amphipods), Neomysis spp. (mysids), Neocrangon communis, Pandalus borealis (carid shrimps), Watasenia scintillans (cephalopods), and Bothrocara hollandi (teleosts), which are hyper-benthic and bentho-pelagic organisms. Dietary analyses based on the weight contributions of different prey taxa to the diets revealed significant variations in dietary composition in terms of fish size, water depth, and season, implying intraspecific dietary segregation. This paper presents the relations between total length and weight for ten demersal fishes from eastern Korean waters: Alcichthys alcicornis (Steindachner 1881); Cleisthenes pinetorum Jordan et Starks, 1904; Dasycottus setiger Bean, 1890; Gadus macrocephalus Tilesius, 1810; Glyptocephalus stelleri (Schmidt, 1904); Gymnocanthus herzensteini Jordan et Starks, 1904; Gymnocanthus intermedius (Temminck et Schlegel, 1843); Liparis punctulatus (Tanaka, 1916); Lycodes tanakae Jordan et Thompson, 1914; and Pseudopleuronectes herzensteini (Jordan et Snyder, 1901). Fish samples were collected seasonally between 2011 and 2017 using bottom gill net and trammel net. The values of exponents a and b from the weight-length relations (WLRs) were estimated. The WLRs for A. alcicornis, G. herzensteini, G. intermedius, and L. punctulatus were estimated for the first time, and new maximum lengths were recorded for G. herzensteini and L. punctulatus. All the relations between total length and weight were statistically significant (all r2 > 0.937). The walleye pollock, Gadus chalcogrammus (Pallas, 1814), is one of the most commercially and ecologically valuable species in the Northwestern Pacific. However, combined pressures of overfishing and environmental changes have led to a substantial decline in its production in Japan and Russia since the 1990s, and a collapse in Korea since the 2000s. The objective of this study was to comprehensively examine its genetic diversity and population structure with an extensive sampling effort of 16 populations across the Northwestern Pacific including South Korea, Japan, and Russia. A multiplex PCR assay composed of seven microsatellite markers revealed a moderate level of observed heterozygosity (Ho = 0.369–0.599), which is lower than that reported in previous studies of this species. All loci were highly polymorphic, with the mean PIC ranging from 0.608 to 0.793. The structure of the 16 populations was characterized by heterozygote deficiency, a modest effective allele number (Ne = 4.551–7.969), low genetic differentiation (FST = 0.000–0.054), a weak population structure, a genetic admixture, and no significant correlation between the genetic and geographic distance. These characteristics are typical of pelagic marine species with large population sizes due to a consistent gene flow among populations when there are no physical boundaries in the open ocean. The seasonal and country-specific genetic structure indicated that G. chalcogrammus populations in the Northwestern Pacific region should be managed as a single management unit. The findings from this study provide critical information for future genetic monitoring, conservation management, and the development of strategies aimed at restoring the populations of this species.

This study assessed variations in demersal fish assemblages with respect to the study site and water depth. Seasonal samplings from May 2018 to March 2019 were conducted along the northern (Ayajin, Goseong) and southern (Hupo, Uljin) sites of the East Sea off the Korean coast, using commercial gill nets. Samples were collected at depths of ~50, ~80, ~150 m across the study sites, with concurrent monitoring of water column structures. A total of 73 species and 6250 specimens were collected. Distinctive fish species compositions were observed according to the study site and depth. Although Glyptocephalus stelleri was the most abundant fish species in both Ayajin and Hupo, Gadus macrocephalus, Icelus cataphractus, and Alcichthys elongatus were most predominant in Ayajin, whereas Cleisthenes pinetorum, Hippoglossoides dubius, and Gymnocanthus herzensteini were more prevalent in Hupo. In terms of depth layer, in Ayajin, G. stelleri dominated in both intermediate and deeper layers, with Hemilepidotus gilberti, A. elongatus, Enophrys diceraus common in shallower depths. Conversely, in Hupo, G. stelleri, C. pinetorum, and A. nadeshnyi dominated across all depth layers, whereas Dasycottus setiger and G. herzensteini dominated in deeper and shallower depths, respectively. Significant influences of the study site and water depth on fish assemblage structures were observed due to variations in water temperature at the seasonal thermocline boundary.

The decline in walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) stocks in Korean waters is a major concern for fishery conservation and management. However, the causes and mechanisms of this collapse remain unclear. This study investigated the complex dynamics influencing the abundance of walleye pollocks in the East Sea of Korea over several decades, by analyzing data from long-term changes in biological factors including composition of length and sex, catch, and oceanographic condition. Prior to the mid-1980s, the catch ratio of juveniles was higher than that of adults, with a higher proportion of females in both juvenile and adult catches compared to males. Especially, high fishing pressure on female individuals can be an important factor contributing to declining reproduction. Consequently, after the mid-1980s, there was a sudden decline in juvenile pollock catches. In the late 1980s, there was a rapid increase in sea surface temperature (SST) in the spawning grounds, resulting in a decrease in both the duration of suitable temperature for spawning and the regional proportion for suitable spawning conditions. Consequently, the decline in pollock stocks after the late 1980s due to overfishing of pollock in the mid-1980s was further exacerbated by the effects of SST warming after the late 1980s. These findings highlight the impact of overfishing and environmental factors on pollock stocks and indicate the need for appropriate fishery management practices to ensure the sustainable use of fishery resources.

Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) exhibit a remarkable ability to adapt to changes in salinity during their life cycle. However, the fertilized egg stages are sensitive to salinity, affecting ontogeny and hatching. This study investigated the effect of salinity (0, 1, 3, and 5 PSU) on the survival of two developmental stages (6.9 PSU) with the frequency of high waves. Overall, the function of the lower river in spawning and hatching is weakening. This study enhances our understanding of the effects of climate change, including increased wave activity, on salmon spawning grounds.

Typhoons disturb the upper ocean, weaken the physical stratification, and induce temporal and spatial changes in primary production, which rapidly alter the distribution and diversity of fishery resources. This study analyzed the response of oceanic conditions and fishery resources on the sea area of the typhoon pathway in the East/Japan Sea (Type A: typhoon passed from southwest to northeast; Type B: typhoon dissipated in the southwest; Type C: typhoon passed from southeast to northeast; and Type D: typhoons passed from southwest to northwest). For Types A and B, the sea surface temperature (SST) decreased in all areas, and Chl-a showed the largest fluctuations in the southwest. For Type C, the SST variation was reduced in the eastern part, stratification was strengthened, and Chl-a did not differ significantly in each area. For Type D, SST and Chl-a showed significant variations in the western part. The biomass of fishery resources increased along the typhoon path for each type, and the diversity increased for Types A and D but decreased for Type B; however, the diversity and catch of fishery resources increased in the northeast for Type C. This study contributes to understanding the impact of typhoon pathway changes on the marine environment and ecosystem.

Walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogramma) caught in the Korean fishing area dramatically decreased in the late 1980s. To investigate the potential impact of the late 1980s climate regime shift on the collapse of the pollock catch, we developed a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model with data assimilation and a particle tracking model. Data-assimilated reanalysis showed that sea surface temperature increased by approximately 2°C in the spawning area of pollock in the late 1980s. The suitable spawning area in the East Korean Bay decreased due to warming in the late 1980s. Spawned eggs of walleye pollock were tracked using a particle tracking model for 30 days in January and February during 1983–1992. The number of individuals transported to the nursery within the Korean fishing area from the spawning area was reduced by 74% in the late 1980s. The intensified East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) could be responsible for the decreased number of individuals transported to the southern area in the late 1980s. Warming in the Korean fishing area could also cause a decrease in pollock. These oceanic changes might be linked to climate regime shifts in the late 1980s. The warming regime with positive Arctic Oscillation and weakened monsoon intensified the northward flow of the EKWC and accelerated the warming of the spawning and fishing areas in the late 1980s.

Recent global climate change often leads to poleward expansions of habitat range of marine organisms in response to increasing water temperature at high latitude. This study investigated latitudinal distribution patterns of Turbo sazae from 2009 to 2018 along the southern and eastern coasts of Korea to verify whether gradual increases in seawater temperature in the East Sea/Sea of Japan (hereafter East/Japan Sea) accelerate changes in the geographic distribution of T. sazae. Between 2009 and 2018, underwater SCUBA surveys were conducted at 19 subtidal rocky shore habitats from the southern and eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula, including Jeju Island. Additionally, long-term seawater temperature records over the last 40 years (between 1980s and 2010s) from the East/Japan Sea were analyzed to verify how changes of water temperature corresponded to geographical distributions of T. sazae. The habitat range of T. sazae was found to have extended from latitude 34°02′ N to latitude 37°06′ N from 2009 to 2018. Although seawater temperature has gradually increased since the 1990s in the East/Japan Sea, habitat expansion was particularly evident during the rapid rise of coastal seawater temperature in the 2010s. Because the strong northward expansion of the Tsushima Current can accelerate the rise of seawater temperature in the East/Japan Sea, studies of the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems of the Korean Peninsula should include data from monitoring the dynamics of the Tsushima Current.
