The hole-boring by intense laser is one of the key issues for fast ignition laser fusion, laser radiation pressure ion acceleration, generation of high energy radiations, and so on. In the hole-boring, laser pulse propagation and generation of relativistic electrons and magnetic fields are critical phenomena. When the laser intensity is higher than 1020W/cm2 and a0 is larger than 10, the self-generated quasi-static magnetic fields reaches Giga Gauss to play important roles in the electron dynamics and the laser propagation. We explore the hole-boring by a linearly and a circularly polarized laser-pulses with the 3 dimensional (3D) PIC simulations. It is found that strong longitudinal magnetic fields are generated in front of the hole-boring driven by a circular polarization laser. The circularly polarized laser is converted into spiral electromagnetic waves which include both radially polarized wave and azimuthally polarized wave in the hole. The radially polarized spiral wave generates a spiral electron beam which induces the longitudinal magnetic field. Those spiral structure-formations are essentially 3D-phenomena which are investigated in details in the first time. The spiral structure-formations may play important roles in fast ignition, radiation pressure ion acceleration, and so on.

A new fuel compression method for a fast ignition scheme is discussed. To form a high areal density fuel plasma for the ignition condition, homogenous isentropic compression (HIC) with solid spherical target is effective. We improve a multi-step pulse shape method that uses progressive shockwaves and reflected shockwaves for the compression, where a precisely controlled step-pulse laser drives the shockwaves to compress the fuel and suppress entropy increase. Another advantage of this approach is the relatively smooth high dense fuel is distributed at maximum compression time, compared to our previous design based on Kidder’s HIC method. In addition, we insert a power dip as a preconditioning before the last pulse step to reduce the electron and ion temperature near critical density. As a result, an optimum implosion is designed using 245 kJ of implosion laser energy to meet the ignition condition.

Laser plasma instabilities, such as stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and two-plasmon decay (TPD), are basic phenomena in intense laser science and applications. In direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) where a fuel capsule is imploded by high-power lasers, SRS and TPD are generally problematic because hot electrons (HEs) generated by SRS and TPD cause fuel preheating, whereas HEs with acceptable energy are expected to contribute to ablation pressure enhancement. In all cases, it is necessary to clarify the occurrence of SRS, TPD, and subsequent HE generation. The ablator of a fuel capsule in direct-drive ICF typically consists of carbon with a variable amount of hydrogen (H). We investigated the H effects in the ablator on SRS, TPD, and HEs under direct-drive ICF conditions at the GEKKO laser facility in planer geometry. The experimental results showed an increase in SRS, TPD, and HEs when H was present in the ablator. The analysis indicated that the variations in plasma inhomogeneity and plasma temperature obtained by H addition were insufficient to explain the observed results. Thus, the enhancement is mainly attributed to the high ion acoustic wave damping driven by the H ions into the plasmas, suggesting that Langmuir decay instability caused SRS saturation, whereas other mechanisms, such as cavitation, could overwhelm the TPD saturation. These results suggest that a suitable choice of H concentration in the ablator is critical for mitigating and controlling the extent of SRS, TPD, and HEs to achieve robust and efficient implosion in direct-drive ICF.

Fast ignition is an interesting scheme for nuclear fusion reaction. Here the authors show electron generation using intense short laser pulses and energy transport by coupling the laser energy to the imploded plasma core as in the ICF conditions.

The radiation from laser created plasma with applied electric field is studied numerically and experimentally. We experimentally observed short terahertz radiation with frequency of 0.2 THz forward direction in air using the THz time domain spectroscopy system. The two-dimensional particle in cell simulation shows that the radiation frequency is inversely proportional to the plasma diameter and is good agreement with experimental data. For the fast ignition of laser fusion, a reliable target design is required for an ignition scale target. This paper shows the first optimized target design for the implosion phase of fast ignition, which is scalable to larger targets. The requirements from the heating process are taken account. In conclusion, a target can be highly compressed using multi-step laser pulse irradiation to a solid spherical target with an inserted gold cone. In an 8 kJ scale implosion, the maximum areal density of deuterium–tritium fuel reaches 0.39 g cm−2 according to 2D simulation results, which is 62% of the case without the cone. Based on the similarity rule, we estimate that the requirement of the implosion laser energy for ignition scale targets (ρRmax  =1.0 g cm−2) is 135 kJ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the compression and heating of cone-inserted spherical, solid CD shell and DT ice layer targets in strong external magnetic fields using the fast ignition integrated interconnecting simulation system (FI3). The simulation results show that the compression of these spherical targets is stable and that it has the potential to produce a high-areal-density core plasma. In a compressed plasma in an external magnetic field, the magnetic mirror ratio is less than four, which does not reflect the hot electrons needed for core heating. To enhance the core heating efficiency in fast ignition laser fusion, the concept of relativistic electron beam guiding by external magnetic fields was evaluated by integrated simulations for FIREX class targets. For the cone-attached shell target case, the core heating performance deteriorates by applying magnetic fields since the core is considerably deformed and most of the fast electrons are reflected due to the magnetic mirror formed through the implosion. On the other hand, in the case of a cone-attached solid ball target, the implosion is more stable under the kilo-tesla-class magnetic field. In addition, feasible magnetic field configuration is formed through the implosion. As a result, the core heating efficiency doubles by magnetic guiding. The compression of an external magnetic field by a laser-driven implosion is studied by using the two-dimensional resistive magneto-radiation hydrodynamic simulation code for electron-beam guiding in fast ignition. The simulation results show that it is possible to compress the magnetic field to 1 kT (107 G); however, the strong magnetic field affects the implosion dynamics because of the suppression of the electron heat flux that crosses the strong magnetic field lines. This result suggests that care must be taken to design a target and the initial conditions for fast ignition with an external magnetic field not only to control the hot electron transport but also to form the high-density plasma. To enhance the core heating efficiency in electron-driven fast ignition, we propose fast-electron beam guiding using externally applied longitudinal magnetic fields. Based on particle-in-cell simulations for FIREX-class experiments, we demonstrate sufficient beam guiding performance in collisional dense plasma by kilotesla-class external magnetic fields for the case with moderate mirror ratio (⩽10). Boring of the mirror field was found through the formation of magnetic pipe structure due to the resistive effects, which indicates a possibility of beam guiding in high mirror field for higher laser intensity and/or longer pulse duration. TRIC-A and TRIC-B proteins form homotrimeric cation-permeable channels in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and nuclear membranes and are thought to contribute to counterionic flux coupled with store Ca 2+ release in various cell types. Serious mutations in the TRIC-B (also referred to as TMEM38B) locus cause autosomal recessive osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), which is characterized by insufficient bone mineralization. We have reported that Tric-b-knockout mice can be used as an OI model; Tric-b deficiency deranges ER Ca 2+ handling and thus reduces extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis in osteoblasts, leading to poor mineralization. Here we report irregular cell death and insufficient ECM in long-bone growth plates from Tric-b-knockout embryos. In the knockout growth plate chondrocytes, excess pro-collagen fibers were occasionally accumulated in severely dilated ER elements. Of the major ER stress pathways, activated PERK/eIF2α (PKR-like ER kinase/ eukaryotic initiation factor 2α) signaling seemed to inordinately alter gene expression to induce apoptosis-related proteins including CHOP (CCAAT/enhancer binding protein homologous protein) and caspase 12 in the knockout chondrocytes. Ca 2+ imaging detected aberrant Ca 2+ handling in the knockout chondrocytes; ER Ca 2+ release was impaired, while cytoplasmic Ca 2+ level was elevated. Our observations suggest that Tric-b deficiency directs growth plate chondrocytes to pro-apoptotic states by compromising cellular Ca 2+ -handling and exacerbating ER stress response, leading to impaired ECM synthesis and accidental cell death., (© 2023. Image-based deep learning (IBDL) is an advanced technique for predicting the surface irradiation conditions of laser surface processing technology. In pulsed-laser surface processing techniques, the number of superimposed laser shots is one of the fundamental and essential parameters that should be optimized for each material. Our primary research aims to build an adequate dataset using laser-irradiated surface images and to successfully predict the number of superimposed shots using the pre-trained deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models. First, the laser shot experiments were performed on copper targets using a nanosecond YAG laser with a wavelength of 532 nm. Then, the training data were obtained with the different superimposed shots of 1 to 1024 in powers of 2. After that, we used several pre-trained deep CNN models to predict the number of superimposed laser shots. Based on the dataset with 1936 images, VGG16 shows a high validation accuracy, higher sensitivity, and more than 99% precision than other deep CNN models. Utilizing the VGG16 model with high sensitivity could positively impact the industries' time, efficiency, and overall production.

We examined various methods to enhance the accessibility of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) technology to more users by making the technique easier, more efficient, and practical. First, the methods for artificially removing the mouse sperm tail were evaluated. Trypsin treatment was found to efficiently remove the sperm tails. The resultant sperm cells had a lower oocyte activation capacity; however, the use of activated oocytes resulted in the same fecundity as that of fresh, untreated sperm. Pre-activated oocytes were more resistant to physical damage, showed higher survival rates, and required less time per injection. Testing this method in rats yielded similar results, although the oocyte activation method was different. Remarkably, this method resulted in higher birth rates of rat progeny than with conventional methods of rat ICSI. Our method thereby streamlines mouse and rat ICSI, making it more accessible to laboratories across many disciplines.

SPG80 is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a pure type of juvenile-onset hereditary spastic paraplegia and is caused by a heterozygous mutation of the UBAP1 (ubiquitin-associated protein 1) gene. UBAP1 is one of the subunits of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport I and plays a role in endosome sorting by binding to ubiquitin-tagged proteins. In this study, we generated novel Ubap1 +/E176Efx23 knock-in mice, in which the SOUBA domain of Ubap1 was completely deleted with the UMA domain being intact, as an animal model of SPG80. The knock-in mice with this heterozygous Ubap1 truncated mutation appeared normal at birth, but they developed progressive hind limb dysfunction several months later. Molecular pathologically, loss of neurons in the spinal cord and accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins were observed in Ubap1 +/E176Efx23 knock-in mice. In addition, changes in the distributions of Rab5 and Rab7 in the spinal cord suggest that this mutation in Ubap1 disturbs endosome-mediated vesicular trafficking. This is the first report of a mouse model that reproduces the phenotype of SPG80. The growth plates are cartilage tissues found at both ends of developing bones, and vital proliferation and differentiation of growth plate chondrocytes are primarily responsible for bone growth. C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) stimulates bone growth by activating natriuretic peptide receptor 2 (NPR2) which is equipped with guanylate cyclase on the cytoplasmic side, but its signaling pathway is unclear in growth plate chondrocytes. We previously reported that transient receptor potential melastatin-like 7 (TRPM7) channels mediate intermissive Ca 2+ influx in growth plate chondrocytes, leading to activation of Ca 2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) for promoting bone growth. In this report, we provide evidence from experiments using mutant mice, indicating a functional link between CNP and TRPM7 channels. Our pharmacological data suggest that CNP-evoked NPR2 activation elevates cellular cGMP content and stimulates big-conductance Ca 2+ -dependent K + (BK) channels as a substrate for cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG). BK channel-induced hyperpolarization likely enhances the driving force of TRPM7-mediated Ca 2+ entry and seems to accordingly activate CaMKII. Indeed, ex vivo organ culture analysis indicates that CNP-facilitated bone growth is abolished by chondrocyte-specific Trpm7 gene ablation. Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) in astrocytes is a key molecule for controlling synapse remodeling. Although mGluR5 is abundant in neonatal astrocytes, its level is gradually down-regulated during development and is almost absent in the adult. However, in several pathological conditions, mGluR5 re-emerges in adult astrocytes and contributes to disease pathogenesis by forming uncontrolled synapses. Thus, controlling mGluR5 expression in astrocyte is critical for several diseases, but the mechanism that regulates mGluR5 expression remains unknown. Here, we show that adenosine triphosphate (ATP)/adenosine-mediated signals down-regulate mGluR5 in astrocytes. First, in situ Ca 2+ imaging of astrocytes in acute cerebral slices from post-natal day (P)7-P28 mice showed that Ca 2+ responses evoked by (S)-3,5-dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG), a mGluR5 agonist, decreased during development, whereas those evoked by ATP or its metabolite, adenosine, increased. Second, ATP and adenosine suppressed expression of the mGluR5 gene, Grm5, in cultured astrocytes. Third, the decrease in the DHPG-evoked Ca 2+ responses was associated with down-regulation of Grm5. Interestingly, among several adenosine (P1) receptor and ATP (P2) receptor genes, only the adenosine A 2B receptor gene, Adora2b, was up-regulated in the course of development. Indeed, we observed that down-regulation of Grm5 was suppressed in Adora2b knockout astrocytes at P14 and in situ Ca 2+ imaging from Adora2b knockout mice indicated that the A 2B receptor inhibits mGluR5 expression in astrocytes. Furthermore, deletion of A 2B receptor increased the number of excitatory synapse in developmental stage. Ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth was investigated to elucidate the fundamental physics of thermal conduction suppression in a magnetic field. Experiments found that unstable modulation growth is faster in an external magnetic field. This result was reproduced by a magnetohydrodynamic simulation based on a Braginskii model of electron thermal transport. An external magnetic field reduces the electron thermal conduction across the magnetic field lines because the Larmor radius of the thermal electrons in the field is much shorter than the temperature scale length. Thermal conduction suppression leads to spatially nonuniform pressure and reduced thermal ablative stabilization, which in turn increases the growth of ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Histone lysine-to-methionine (K-to-M) mutations have been identified as driver mutations in human cancers. Interestingly, these 'oncohistone' mutations inhibit the activity of histone methyltransferases. Therefore, they can potentially be used as versatile tools to investigate the roles of histone modifications. In this study, we generated a genetically engineered mouse line in which an H3.3K36M mutation could be induced in the endogenous H3f3b gene. Since H3.3K36M has been identified as a causative mutation of human chondroblastoma, we induced this mutation in the chondrocyte lineage in mouse embryonic limbs. We found that H3.3K36M causes a global reduction in H3K36me2 and defects in chondrocyte differentiation. Importantly, the reduction of H3K36me2 was accompanied by a collapse of normal H3K27me3 distribution. Furthermore, the changes in H3K27me3, especially the loss of H3K27me3 at gene regulatory elements, were associated with the mis-regulated expression of a set of genes important for limb development, including HoxA cluster genes. Thus, through the in vivo induction of the H3.3K36M mutation, we reveal the importance of maintaining the balance between H3K36me2 and H3K27me3 during chondrocyte differentiation and limb development.

Interactions between large-amplitude laser light and strongly magnetized dense plasma have been investigated by one- and two-dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations. Since whistler waves have no critical density, they can propagate through plasmas beyond the critical density in principle. However, we have found the propagation of whistler waves is restricted significantly by the stimulated Brillouin scattering. It is confirmed that the period during which the whistler wave can propagate in overcritical plasmas is proportional to the growth time of the ion-acoustic wave via the Brillouin instability. The allowable pulse duration of the whistler wave has a power-law dependence on the amplitude of the whistler wave and the external magnetic field.

Space radiation may cause DNA damage to cells and concern for the inheritance of mutations in offspring after deep space exploration. However, there is no way to study the long-term effects of space radiation using biological materials. Here, we developed a method to evaluate the biological effect of space radiation and examined the reproductive potential of mouse freeze-dried spermatozoa stored on the International Space Station (ISS) for the longest period in biological research. The space radiation did not affect sperm DNA or fertility after preservation on ISS, and many genetically normal offspring were obtained without reducing the success rate compared to the ground-preserved control. The results of ground x-ray experiments showed that sperm can be stored for more than 200 years in space. Here we report on the effects of material strength factors on the generation of surface structure due to nonuniform laser irradiation. The influence of material strength on the generation of perturbation on a diamond surface subjected to nonuniform laser irradiation was experimentally investigated. Our previous investigations suggested that stiffer and denser materials reduce surface perturbation due to spatially nonuniform laser irradiation, which was reproduced well by calculations with multi-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation code. In this work, we found that local fractures due to yield strength failure are generated by high degrees of irradiation non-uniformity. A characteristic crack-like surface structure was observed, which was not reproduced by the 2D simulation code calculations at all. The 2D simulations showed that the pressure at the diamond surface locally exceeds the Hugoniot elastic limit due to nonuniform irradiation, implying the potential for development of surface perturbations. We also measured the areal-density distribution of perturbations for single-crystal diamond and diamond with a thin high atomic number (high-Z) coating on its surface. The experimental results imply that the combination of a stiff material and thin high-Z coating can suppress the solid-strength effects caused by large irradiation non-uniformity. The knowledge given here is applicable to inertial confinement fusion target design, laser material processing, and universal problems involving solids and high-energy-density plasmas.

Motile cilia and flagella require ATP for their formation and function. Although glycolytic enzymes are components of flagellar proteomes, how they translocate to flagella is unknown. Here we show that the expression pattern of the functionally nonannotated gene 4833427G06Rik (C11orf88), which is found only in vertebrates and is designated here as Hoatzin (Hoatz), suggests a functional association of its product with motile cilia and flagella. Hoatz knockout (KO) mice developed hydrocephalus and male infertility in an autosomal recessive manner, and the ependymal cilia frequently showed disorganized axonemes, reducing motility associated with collapsed spermatid flagella during cytodifferentiation. HOATZ was associated with certain proteins, including the flagellar glycolytic enzyme ENO4. In the testes of the Hoatz KO mice, the immature form of ENO4 accumulated in abnormal cytoplasmic puncta of developing spermatids. Fast isochoric laser heating is a scheme to heat matter with a relativistic intensity (>10^{18}  W/cm^{2}) laser pulse for producing an ultrahigh-energy-density (UHED) state. We have demonstrated an efficient fast isochoric heating of a compressed dense plasma core with a multipicosecond kilojoule-class petawatt laser and an assistance of externally applied kilotesla magnetic fields for guiding fast electrons to the dense plasma. A UHED state of 2.2 PPa is achieved experimentally with 4.6 kJ of total laser energy that is one order of magnitude lower than the energy used in the conventional implosion scheme. A two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation confirmed that diffusive heating from a laser-plasma interaction zone to the dense plasma plays an essential role to the efficient creation of the UHED state.

Fast ignition (FI) is a promising approach for high-energy-gain inertial confinement fusion in the laboratory. To achieve ignition, the energy of a short-pulse laser is required to be delivered efficiently to the pre-compressed fuel core via a high-energy electron beam. Therefore, understanding the transport and energy deposition of this electron beam inside the pre-compressed core is the key for FI. Here we report on the direct observation of the electron beam transport and deposition in a compressed core through the stimulated Cu Kα emission in the super-penetration scheme. Simulations reproducing the experimental measurements indicate that, at the time of peak compression, about 1% of the short-pulse energy is coupled to a relatively low-density core with a radius of 70 μm. Analysis with the support of 2D particle-in-cell simulations uncovers the key factors improving this coupling efficiency. Our findings are of critical importance for optimizing FI experiments in a super-penetration scheme.

Fast isochoric heating of a pre-compressed plasma core with a high-intensity short-pulse laser is an attractive and alternative approach to create ultra-high-energy-density states like those found in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition sparks. Laser-produced relativistic electron beam (REB) deposits a part of kinetic energy in the core, and then the heated region becomes the hot spark to trigger the ignition. However, due to the inherent large angular spread of the produced REB, only a small portion of the REB collides with the core. Here, we demonstrate a factor-of-two enhancement of laser-to-core energy coupling with the magnetized fast isochoric heating. The method employs a magnetic field of hundreds of Tesla that is applied to the transport region from the REB generation zone to the core which results in guiding the REB along the magnetic field lines to the core. This scheme may provide more efficient energy coupling compared to the conventional ICF scheme.

Platelets participate in not only thrombosis and hemostasis but also other pathophysiological processes, including tumor metastasis and inflammation. However, the putative role of platelets in the development of solid organs has not yet been described. Here, we report that platelets regulate lung development through the interaction between the platelet-activation receptor, C-type lectin-like receptor-2 (Clec-2; encoded by Clec1b ), and its ligand, podoplanin, a membrane protein. Clec-2 deletion in mouse platelets led to lung malformation, which caused respiratory failure and neonatal lethality. In these embryos, α-smooth muscle actin-positive alveolar duct myofibroblasts (adMYFs) were almost absent in the primary alveolar septa, which resulted in loss of alveolar elastic fibers and lung malformation. Our data suggest that the lack of adMYFs is caused by abnormal differentiation of lung mesothelial cells (luMCs), the major progenitor of adMYFs. In the developing lung, podoplanin expression is detected in alveolar epithelial cells (AECs), luMCs, and lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs). LEC-specific podoplanin knockout mice showed neonatal lethality and Clec1b -/- -like lung developmental abnormalities. Notably, these Clec1b -/- -like lung abnormalities were also observed after thrombocytopenia or transforming growth factor-β depletion in fetuses. The first segregation at the blastocyst stage is the symmetry-breaking event to characterize two cell components; namely, inner cell mass (ICM) and trophectoderm (TE). TEA domain transcription factor 4 (TEAD4) is a well-known regulator to determine TE properties of blastomeres in rodent models. However, the roles of bovine TEAD4 in blastocyst development have been unclear. We here aimed to clarify the mechanisms underlining TE characterization by TEAD4 in bovine blastocysts. We first found that the TEAD4 mRNA expression level was greater in TE than in ICM, which was further supported by TEAD4 immunofluorescent staining. Subsequently, we examined the expression patterns of TE-expressed genes; CDX2 , GATA2 and CCN2 , in the TEAD4 -knockdown (KD) blastocysts. These expression levels significantly decreased in the TEAD4 KD blastocysts compared with controls. Of these downregulated genes, the CCN2 expression level decreased the most. We further analyzed the expression levels of TE-expressed genes; CDX2 , GATA2 and TEAD4 in the CCN2 KD blastocysts. Strikingly, the CCN2 KD blastocysts showed the downregulation of CDX2 , GATA2 and TEAD4 Furthermore, the ratio of TE-to-ICM cell numbers in the CCN2 KD blastocysts significantly decreased compared to controls. Oocytes without a zona pellucida (ZP) often occur as a result of congenital or operational effects, but they are difficult to handle, and embryonic survival is low. Such zona-free (ZF) oocytes are therefore not used in clinics or laboratories. Furthermore, in the laboratory, removal of the ZP is often necessary for genetic manipulation by viral infection or twin production by blastomere separation, but adverse effects on development have been reported. It would therefore be extremely valuable if the embryo could be covered with a structure similar to that of the ZP. In this study, we sought to determine whether an agarose capsule could serve as a substitute for the ZP. Our results indicate that embryos derived from these agarose capsules were able to develop normally, and could be transplanted to obtain viable offspring, without having to remove the agarose capsule. Furthermore, before compaction, the agarose capsule embryos exhibited good freezing tolerance, and survival rate was extremely high compared to ZF embryos. Thus, agarose capsules represent a valuable tool for utilizing oocytes and embryos that lack a ZP, both in a clinical and livestock setting.

Recently, it has become possible to generate cloned mice using a somatic cell nucleus derived from not only F1 strains but also inbred strains. However, to date, all cloned mice have been generated using F1 mouse oocytes as the recipient cytoplasm. Here, we attempted to generate cloned mice from oocytes derived from the ICR-outbred mouse strain. Cumulus cell nuclei derived from BDF1 and ICR mouse strains were injected into enucleated oocytes of both strains to create four groups. Subsequently, the quality and developmental potential of the cloned embryos were examined. ICR oocytes were more susceptible to damage associated with nuclear injection than BDF1 oocytes, but their activation rate and several epigenetic markers of reconstructed cloned oocytes/embryos were similar to those of BDF1 oocytes. When cloned embryos were cultured for up to 4 days, those derived from ICR oocytes demonstrated a significantly decreased rate of development to the blastocyst stage, irrespective of the nuclear donor mouse strain. However, when cloned embryos derived from ICR oocytes were transferred to female recipients at the two-cell stage, healthy cloned offspring were obtained at a success rate similar to that using BDF1 oocytes. The ICR mouse strain is very popular for biological research and less expensive to establish than most other strains. Infrared (IR) heating processes have been studied to form a deuterium layer in an inertial confinement fusion target. To understand the relationship between the IR intensity and the fuel layering time constant, we have developed a new method to assess the IR intensity during irradiation. In our method, a glass flask acting as a dummy target is filled with liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) and is then irradiated with 2-μm light. The IR intensity is subsequently calculated from the time constant of the LH 2 evaporation rate. Although LH 2 evaporation is also caused by the heat inflow from the surroundings and by the background heat, the evaporation rate due to IR heating can be accurately determined by acquiring the time constant with and without irradiation. The experimentally measured IR intensity is 0.66 mW/cm 2 , which agrees well with a value estimated by considering the IR photon energy balance. Our results suggest that the present method can be used to measure the IR intensity inside a cryogenic system during IR irradiation of laser fusion targets.
