In resonance to a recent geometric framework proposed by Douglas and Yang, afunctional model for certain linear bounded operators with rank-oneself-commutator acting on a Hilbert space is developed. By taking advantage ofthe refined existing theory of the principal function of a hyponormal operatorwe transfer the whole action outside the spectrum, on the resolvent of theunderlying operator, localized at a distinguished vector. The wholeconstruction turns out to rely on an elementary algebra body involving analyticmultipliers and Cauchy transforms. A natural field theory interpretation of theresulting resolvent functional model is proposed.

In high-income countries, not completing secondary school often entails a high risk of social exclusion. Using data on young adults born in 1985 who grew up in metropolitan Sweden, we study factors associated with not graduating from upper-secondary school at age 21. Our hypothesis is that if a young person sees examples of people who are not able to earn a living despite having a long education, such negative examples are influential. Results from estimated logistic models are consistent with the hypothesis.

The efficacy of an Oral Whole Cell ETEC Vaccine (OEV) against Travelers' Diarrhea (TD) was reexamined using novel outcome and immunologic measures. More specifically, a recently developed disease severity score and alternative clinical endpoints were evaluated as part of an initial validation effort to access the efficacy of a vaccine intervention for the first time in travelers to an ETEC endemic area. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial followed travelers to Guatemala or Mexico up to 28 days after arrival in the country following vaccination (two doses two weeks apart) with an ETEC vaccine. Fecal samples were collected upon arrival, departure, and during TD for pathogen identification. Serum was collected in a subset of subjects to determine IgA cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) antibody titers upon their arrival in the country. The ETEC vaccine's efficacy, utilizing a TD severity score and other alternative endpoints, including the relationship between antibody levels and TD risk, was assessed and compared to the per-protocol primary efficacy endpoint. A total of 1435 subjects completed 7–28 days of follow-up and had available data. Vaccine efficacy was higher against more severe (≥5 unformed stools/24 h) ETEC-attributable TD and when accounting for immunologic take (PE ≥ 50%; p < 0.05). The vaccine protected against less severe (3 and 4 unformed stools/24 h) ETEC-attributable TD when accounting for symptom severity or change in activity (PE = 76.3%, p = 0.01). Immunologic take of the vaccine was associated with a reduced risk of infection with ETEC and other enteric pathogens, and with lower TD severity. Clear efficacy was observed among vaccinees with a TD score of ≥4 or ≥5, regardless of immunologic take (PE = 72.0% and 79.0%, respectively, p ≤ 0.03). The vaccine reduced the incidence and severity of ETEC, and this warrants accelerated evaluation of the improved formulation (designated ETVAX), currently undergoing advanced field testing. Subjects with serum IgA titers to CTB had a lower risk of infection with ETEC and Campylobacter jejuni/coli. Furthermore, the TD severity score provided a more robust descriptor of disease severity and should be included as an endpoint in future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Moves into and out of privileged neighbourhoods as well as moves into and out of disadvantaged neighbourhoods in metropolitan Sweden are studied using register data on all moves by adults that took place between 2004 and 2006. Based on estimated multivariate models, we find that, for all four types of moves, age, education, household income, household composition and its changes, as well as labour market status and its changes, matter. However, in addition, where the person was born can matter, as, with some exceptions, foreign‐born people are less likely than natives with the same characteristics to move into a privileged neighbourhood. Furthermore, foreign‐born are typically less likely than natives with the same characteristics to move out of the metropolitan regions. However, considerable heterogeneity in probabilities to move between those born in different categories of countries is found. Adults born in high‐income countries are, in many cases, moving similarly to natives with the same characteristics, while this is typically not found among people born in low‐income countries. The latter might be due to fewer assets, lesser social capital, discrimination in the housing market or in housing finance or by choice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores household income per capita for the rural Yi and Manchu ethnic minority groups and the Han majority using data from the China Household Income Project 2002, 2013 and 2018. The disparity between total per capita income for the Yi and Han populations narrowed, while the average per capita income for the Manchu population remained relatively similar to that of the Han population. Decomposing total income to its sources shows that the rapid increase in agricultural income among the Yi was a main reason why the disparity in income, compared to the two other ethnic groups, narrowed. Nevertheless, reliance on agricultural income among the Yi was reduced as wage employment and migration increased. The Manchu group and the Han group also experienced rapid increases in wages and self-employment income. Many European high-income countries face a rapid increase in the number of immigrants from low- and middle-income countries reaching the normal pension age. Thus, it is increasingly relevant to ask: how are older migrants from such countries faring? Here we study poverty rates and determinants of poverty among natives and persons born in Bosnia, Iran, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Turkey living in Denmark or Sweden in 2010. Income data on all such persons aged 65–82 living in the two destination countries are analysed. In both Denmark and Sweden, we report much higher poverty rates among the immigrants studied than among natives. Estimated probability models show that being poor is related to a person's education, family status and age, as well as year of arrival in the destination country and the labour market and his or her residential status at the age of 55. However, the labour market in the destination country at the time of arrival also matter. Persons born in Yugoslavia or Turkey who had immigrated to Denmark during the '70s and '80s were more likely to be in poverty in 2010 that their counterparts with the same characteristics who had immigrated to Sweden.
