Large volume changes and low electronic conductivity limit the advancement of mixed metal vanadate oxides as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, ultrafine Co3V2O8 nanoparticles with a diameter of 7–9 nm are embedded in situ within the walls of hollow carbon combination spheres (HCCSs) through spray drying and calcination process. Each unit sphere of HCCS has an internal cavity of 170 nm and a wall thickness of 12 nm. When tested in lithium-ion half-cells, Co3V2O8/HCCS sustains a high reversible capacity of 1043 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 after 120 cycles, 832 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1 after 580 cycles, and 759 mAh g–1 at 1.0 A g–1 after 800 cycles. Kinetics investigation uncovers a noticeable pseudocapacitive effect. Li+ diffusion coefficient ranges from 1.12 × 10–12 to 6.62 × 10–14 cm2 s–1. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed low Ohmic resistance and charge transfer resistance, confirming efficient Li+ diffusion. The full cell also exhibits excellent cycling performance and rate capability. The exceptional electrochemical performance is associated with the unique hollow carbon combination sphere and the embedded structure of ultrafine Co3V2O8 nanoparticles. The former improves the structural strength, facilitates ion transport and electronic conduction, and prevents Co3V2O8 detachment from the composite. This work systematically studied the corrosion behavior and passivation property of CoCrFeNi high‐entropy alloys (HEAs) in a simulated seawater environment. The results reveal that the addition of CO32−/HCO3− results in the secondary passivation of the HEA in NaCl solution, and secondary passivation film possesses higher dissolution rate in comparison with primary passive film. H+ ions ionized by HCO3− facilitate the charge transfer process, thin the thickness of passive film, and increase the disordered degree of the film. Moreover, the presence of HCO3− promotes the nucleation and growth of metastable pits, and enhances the pitting sensitivity. Furthermore, an increase in CO32− concentration accelerates the dissolution of passive film, weakens the compactness and protective performance of the film, and increases the probability that metastable pitting evolves into stable pitting, as well aggravates the corrosion of the HEA. In addition, the corrosion resistance of the HEA is diminished due to the formation of microgalvanic corrosion cells between matrix and inclusion. Monodispersed and faceted Bi2Fe4O9 micro-cuboid crystals with a mullite-type structure have been successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The single crystalline Bi2Fe4O9 micro-cuboids exhibited a length of 10–20 μm and a square cross-section with a side length of 1–2 μm. The preferential growth of the Bi2Fe4O9 micro-cuboid crystals has been determined to be along 〈001〉 with the dominant (110) and (−110) facets enclosed. These micro-cuboid crystals were probably formed by a dissolution–recrystallization mechanism, where a phase transition from irregular-shaped sillenite Bi25FeO40 agglomerates to perovskite BiFeO3 microspheres occurred and finally resulted in the micro-cuboid crystals. More interestingly, these micro-cuboids demonstrated a remarkable photo-Fenton catalytic degradation activity towards RhB under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm). 90.2% RhB decomposition at 120 min can be achieved and the corresponding apparent rate constant is 0.0175 min−1, 11.67 times and 3.65 times larger than that of Fenton-like oxidation and pure photocatalysis, respectively. The as-prepared Bi2Fe4O9 micro-cuboid crystals also showed intriguing morphology-dependent ferromagnetism at room temperature, possibly allowing the magnetic recollection and reuse of Bi2Fe4O9 samples as well as their magnetic-field-mediated photocatalytic performances. The corrosion behaviour and mechanism of CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA) imposed by alternating current (AC) in HCO3−/CO32− solution with various pH were systematically investigated via a series of corrosion tests. The results showed that with the augment of pH value, the polarisation resistance of the MEA decreased significantly, Ep shifted negatively, and ipI value increased, as well as corrosion rate was enhanced, revealing that the corrosion resistance was weakened. As solution pH increased, the formation of secondary passivation zone became easier, which may be attributed to the reaction conversion process of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) species. Moreover, the increase in pH led to an increase in defect density and a thinning of passivation film, facilitating the corrosion of the MEA. AC interference accelerated the ion exchange process and promoted the formation possibility of stable pitting. Higher iAC and pH inhibited the repassivation of metastable pitting, and increased the pitting susceptibility. Highlights The effect of pH on the corrosion behaviour of CoCrNi MEA with imposed AC was clarified. High pH and iAC accelerated the nucleation and growth of metastable pits. A composite film that features bismuth–antimony alloy nanoparticles uniformly embedded in a 3D hierarchical porous carbon skeleton is synthesized by the polyacrylonitrile-spreading method. The dissolved polystyrene is used as a soft template. The average diameter of the bismuth–antimony alloy nanoparticles is ~34.5 nm. The content of the Bi-Sb alloy has an impact on the electrochemical performance of the composite film. When the content of the bismuth–antimony alloy is 45.27%, the reversible capacity and cycling stability of the composite film are the best. Importantly, the composite film outperforms the bismuth–antimony alloy nanoparticles embedded in dense carbon film and the cube carbon nanobox in terms of specific capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability. The composite film can provide a discharge capacity of 322 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g−1, 292 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g−1, and 185 mAh g−1 after 2000 cycles at 10 A g−1. The carbon film prepared by the spreading method presents a unique integrated composite structure that significantly improves the structural stability and electronic conductivity of Bi-Sb alloy nanoparticles. The 3D hierarchical porous carbon skeleton structure further enhances electrolyte accessibility, promotes Na+ transport, increases reaction kinetics, and buffers internal stress. The corrosion behavior and mechanism of CoCrFeNi HEA under AC application were systematically studied in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution containing different concentrations of NaHSO3. The results showed that the existence of HSO3− increased the defect density within the passivation film on the surface of the HEA. With the increase of HSO3− concentration, the passivation zone became narrow, Ep shifted negatively, and ip increased, which indicated that the corrosion resistance of the HEA was weakened. When the HSO3− concentration increased to 0.1 M, a clear transition zone appeared, indicating that the increase in concentration reduced the passivity of the HEA, and its corrosion behavior changed from the typical passivation characteristic to the activation state with increasing iAC. The imposed AC promoted the nucleation of metastable pitting, which was indicated by a remarkable increase in the average pitting number density (Navg) from 5 to 17 mm−2 with the enhancement of iAC. To develop marine simulators of Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) ships and gain a better understanding of the maneuverability of the SWATH, a mathematical model with five Degree of Freedom(DOF)for SWATH has been established, in which the surge, sway, yaw, roll and pitch motions are all considered. The characteristics of the SWATH ship form and the hydrodynamic interaction among the twin bodies, twin propellers and twin rudders are taken into consideration on the basis of the three DOF maneuvering mathematical model. To verify the effectiveness of the modeling and ensure the use of the model in marine handling simulators, a detailed model is tentatively established on the basis of empirical formulas. Based on the acquired results, tests were performed to simulate the steady turning and zigzag motions of the ship. The results are in accordance with regular pattern and trend of motion of SWATH ships. This verifies the effectiveness of the mathematical model of the turning movement.

The corrosion behaviour of equiatomic CoCrFeNi and CoCrFeNiMn high entropy alloys manufactured by the vacuum arc melting were studied in 3.5 wt-% NaCl solution. And the reasons for the differences in corrosion resistance were investigated in terms of microstructure, electrochemical behaviour and oxide film. The results show that the two alloys exhibit different corrosion characteristics, with CoCrFeNi alloy displaying typical passivation characteristics and CoCrFeNiMn alloy exhibiting activation behaviour. The CoCrFeNi HEA with compact and protective passive film has lower corrosion current density, larger film resistance and polarisation resistance, meaning a lower corrosion rate and superior corrosion resistance compared with those of CoCrFeNiMn alloy. Moreover, CoCrFeNiMn alloy forms a discontinuous and loose corrosion product film with higher Mn content and lower contents of Cr, Fe and Co compared to the matrix, which decreases its protection performance. The addition of Mn changes the electrochemical behaviour, and higher Mn oxides/hydroxides within oxide film are unfavourable to forming a stable passive film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MnS has been explored as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, but low electronic conductivity and severe volume change induce low reversible capacity and poor cycling performance. In this work, the nanocapsule consisting of MnS nanopolyhedrons confined in independent, closed and conductive hollow polyhedral nanospheres is prepared by embedding MnCO3 nanopolyhedrons into ZIF-67, followed by coating of RF resin and gaseous sulfurization/carbonization. Benefiting from the unique nanocapsule structure, especially inner CoS/C shell and outer pure C shell, the MnS@CoS/C@C composite as anode material presents excellent cycling performance (674 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 300 cycles; 481 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 after 300 cycles) and superior rate capability (1133.3 and 650.6 mAh g−1 at 0.1 and 4 A g−1), compared to the control materials (MnS and MnS@CoS/C) and other MnS composites. Kinetics measurements further reveal a high proportion of the capacitive effect and low reaction impedance of MnS@CoS/C@C. SEM and TEM observation on the cycled electrode confirms superior structural stability of MnS@CoS/C@C during long-term cycles. The effect of different annealing temperatures on the corrosion behavior of CoCrNi medium entropy alloy (MEA) was investigated in an alkaline soil simulation solution. The results show the corrosion resistance of the MEA gradually increases with increasing annealing temperature. The corrosion behavior of the MEA is correlated with grain size, oxide inclusions, and surface passive film. With an increasing grain size, the proportion of grain boundaries decreases, which improves its corrosion resistance. The micro‐galvanic corrosion cell exists between the oxide and its surrounding matrix, which promotes the occurrence of pitting corrosion. As the annealing temperature increases, the film formed on the MEA surface becomes more complete and dense, greatly increasing the corrosion resistance of the MEA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The tribological properties of SnO2 nanofluids were investigated using ball-on-plate reciprocating sliding wear tests. It was found that the coefficient of friction was reduced by 34.9% using 3 wt% SnO2 nanoparticles. The wear width and wear depth were reduced by 42% and 50.1%, respectively, using 2 wt% SnO2 nanoparticles. In the orthogonal tests, the frequency had the greatest influence on the friction and wear loss. Additionally, the optimal working conditions were a normal load of 50 N, a motion frequency of 1 Hz, and a surface roughness of 500–600 nm. Additionally, the excellent tribological performance of SnO2 nanofluids could be attributed to the formation of a tribo-film with a low shearing resistance due to the oleic acid and a protective layer due to the embedment of SnO2 nanoparticles. To overcome two main drawbacks of SnO2 as anode material in lithium‐ion batteries, low conductivity and poor cycling stability, SnO2/Sn@TiO2@C composite is prepared via one‐pot hydrothermal reaction to synthesize SnO2/C precursor‐assembled hollow nanospheres and then coated with TiO2 and resorcinol‐formaldehyde resin. After calcination, multi‐shelled hollow nanospheres of SnO2/Sn@TiO2@C are formed. When used as anode material in lithium‐ion batteries, the as‐prepared composite exhibits high discharge capacity of 1565 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. After 300 cycles at 1 A g−1, the discharge capacity still reaches 961 mAh g−1 with capacity fading rate of just 0.11 % per cycle. The average discharge capacity reaches 395 mAh g−1 even at 5 A g−1. The superior lithium storage performance mainly benefits from the unique multi‐shelled hollow nanosphere structure. The coating TiO2 and amorphous carbon increase structural and cycling stabilities of SnO2/Sn hollow nanospheres. The outermost carbon shell further enhances electronic conductivity of the composite. The hollow nanosphere structure also endows SnO2/Sn nanoparticles with high electrochemical activity. In this work, octahedral shaped PbTiO3-TiO2 nanocomposites have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, where perovskite ferroelectric PbTiO3 nanooctahedra were employed as substrate. The microstructures of the composites were investigated systemically by using XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was revealed that anantase TiO2 nanocrystals with a size of about 5 nm are dispersed on the surface of the {111} facets of the nanooctahedron crystals. Photocatalytic hydrogen production of the nanocomposites has been evaluated in a methanol alcohol-water solution under UV light enhanced irradiation. The H2 evolution rate of the nanocomposites increased with an increased loading of TiO2 on the nanooctahedra. The highest H2 evolution rate was 630.51 μmol/h with the highest concentration of TiO2 prepared with 2 mL tetrabutyl titanate, which was about 36 times higher than that of the octahedron substrate. The enhanced photocatalytic reactivity of the nanocomposites is possibly ascribed to the UV light absorption of the nanooctahedral substrates, efficient separation of photo-generated carriers via the interface and the reaction on the surface of the TiO2 nanocrystals. Nanoparticles acting as additives to improve the tribological performance of base fluids have attracted much attention in the last several decades to lower wear loss, reduce the frictional force, enhance the service performance and extend the service life of sliding components. Different nanoparticles with various concentrations, mixing methodologies, surfactants and surface modifications have been frequently studied for in-depth understanding. The present research reviews the applications of nanoparticles as lubricant additives and their tribological properties. The common nano-sized materials, production processes, classifications of surfactants, surface modifications, friction reduction and anti-wear behavior of various nanolubricants are summarized. The potential mechanisms which can result in excellent tribological properties of nanolubricants are discussed. The limitations and challenges in applications and commercialization of nanolubricants are introduced. Finally, the recommendations for the development and the directions of future studies related to nanolubricants are provided. Abstract: Samarium ions doped strontium molybdate (SrMoO4:Sm3+) nanofibers (NFs) were fabricated by a simple electrospinning process. The obtained SrMoO4:Sm3+ NFs are composed of scheelite-type tetragonal SrMoO4 phase, and the NFs have an average diameter of ca. 90nm. Under 275nm ultraviolet (UV) excitation, the NFs show an orange-red fluorescent property symbolized by a characteristic emission (606nm) resulting from the 4G5/2 → 6H7/2 energy level transition of Sm3+. And the photoluminescence (PL) emissi on intensity of the SrMoO4:Sm3+ NFs is superior to that of the nanoparticles (NPs) counterpart under the same doping concentrations. The effect of Sm3+ concentrations on the 4G5/2 → 6H7/2 emission intensity was also investigated. The result reveals that the concentration quenching will occur when the Sm3+ content exceeds 2 at.%. In other words, the SrMoO4:Sm3+ NFs have an optimal luminescent performance under such a doping concentration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Novel TiO2/ZnO core–sheath nanofibers (NFs) film was fabricated through an extraordinary coaxial electrospinning technique. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were assembled using the TiO2/ZnO NFs film as photoanode. FESEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS and UV–vis were used to characterize the NFs electrode film. Photocurrent–voltage (I–V) characteristic, incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectrum, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were performed to evaluate the DSSCs performance. The results reveal that the DSSCs based on the TiO2/ZnO core–sheath NFs are superior to their bare TiO2 NFs-based counterparts. Compared with the latter, the overall energy conversion efficiency was enhanced from 4.47 to 5.17%. And the possible mechanism for this enhancement was discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: YBO3:Eu3+ micro-spheres were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Moderate particle sizes, perfect surfaces, and a spherical morphology were achieved by co-addition of Li ion and alkaline-earth metal ions. Phase identification, morphology observation and photoluminescence performance of the YBO3:Eu3+ micro-spheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and photoluminescence spectrophotometer (PL), respectively. The results showed significant improvement of the PL emission of YBO3:Eu3+. The emission intensity doubled when the hydrothermal reaction was carried out at 220°C. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Multiple families of detoxification genes, including the increasingly recognized family of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, work together to influence the toxicity of synthetic insecticides and thus their resistance. Effective management of insecticide resistance requires identification of all toxicity-affecting members from each family of toxicity-related genes., Results: Here, we used emamectin benzoate (EB), ABC transporters and Spodoptera frugiperda as a working case to test whether the strategy of 'from the model insect Drosophila melanogaster to agricultural pests' can identify all or most ABC transporter members related to EB tolerance in S. frugiperda. After confirming the involvement of ABC transporters in the toxicity of EB against fruit fly with the ABC inhibitor verapamil, four ABC transporter genes (DmCG3327, DmCG11147, DmCG4822, and DmCG7627) were found to be involved in EB tolerance using RNA interference-based family-wide functional screening. A combination of phylogenic analysis and a reciprocal TBLASTN search identified five S. frugiperda ABC transporter members as homologs (SfABCC4, SfABCG1, and SfABCG23) or one-way best hits (SfABCG4 and SfABCG20) of the four fly ABC genes. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis found that all five S. frugiperda ABC transporter genes were inducible by EB, and expressed in all the developmental stages and larval tissues, but with significant quantitative differences among stages and tissues. A cytotoxicity assay of ABC-overexpressing Sf9 cell lines showed that all the five S. frugiperda ABC transporter genes made Sf9 cells tolerant to EB., Conclusions: This study not only identifies nine ABC transporter genes related to EB tolerance from D. melanogaster (four genes) and S. frugiperda (five genes), but also demonstrates the utility and effectiveness of the 'model to pests' strategy to identify most toxicity-affecting members from a given family of toxicity-related genes. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of a patient-specific algorithm which we developed for predicting changes in sagittal pelvic tilt after total hip arthroplasty (THA)., Methods: This retrospective study included 143 patients who underwent 171 THAs between April 2019 and October 2020 and had full-body lateral radiographs preoperatively and at one year postoperatively. We measured the pelvic incidence (PI), the sagittal vertical axis (SVA), pelvic tilt, sacral slope (SS), lumbar lordosis (LL), and thoracic kyphosis to classify patients into types A, B1, B2, B3, and C. The change of pelvic tilt was predicted according to the normal range of SVA (0 mm to 50 mm) for types A, B1, B2, and B3, and based on the absolute value of one-third of the PI-LL mismatch for type C patients. The reliability of the classification of the patients and the prediction of the change of pelvic tilt were assessed using kappa values and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), respectively. Validity was assessed using the overall mean error and mean absolute error (MAE) for the prediction of the change of pelvic tilt., Results: The kappa values were 0.927 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.861 to 0.992) and 0.945 (95% CI 0.903 to 0.988) for the inter- and intraobserver reliabilities, respectively, and the ICCs ranged from 0.919 to 0.997. The overall mean error and MAE for the prediction of the change of pelvic tilt were -0.3° (SD 3.6°) and 2.8° (SD 2.4°), respectively. The overall absolute change of pelvic tilt was 5.0° (SD 4.1°). Objective: To assess the midterm follow-up outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) for the treatment of patients with juvenile-onset ankylosing spondylitis (JAS)., Methods: The clinical data of 81 patients (127 hips) with JAS (age≤16 years, JAS group) and 267 patients (391 hips) with adult onset ankylosing spondylitis (AAS) (age>16 years, AAS group) between January 2004 and March 2018 were retrospectively analysed. The baseline demographics, clinical, radiographic, and laboratory parameters were collected. Before operation and at last follow-up, the overall disease activity [Bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI)] and function status [Bath ankylosing spondylitis functional index (BASFI)], hip subjective score [Harris hip score (HHS)] and objective score [12-item short form health survey (SF-12), including physical component score (PCS) and mental component score (MCS)], and patient satisfaction for THA were reviewed. The major orthopedic complications, including periprosthetic infection, dislocation, periprosthetic fractures, and poor incision healing, were also recorded during the follow-up period., Results: The comparison of preoperative baseline parameters showed that the body mass, body mass index, age of onset, age of surgery, disease duration, and the proportion of combined smoking history in the JAS group were significantly lower than those in the AAS group ( P <0.05), the proportion of bilateral surgeries, proportion of uveitis, proportion of combined family history, C-reactive protein, albumin, and preoperative BASFI were significantly higher than those in the AAS group ( P <0.05). Both groups were followed up. The follow-up time in the JAS group was 29-199 months, with an average of 113 months; in the AAS group was 35-199 months, with an average of 98 months. Incisions in both groups healed by first intention. During the follow-up period, there were 1 case of periprosthetic fracture, 1 case of dislocation, and 1 case of ceramic fragmentation in the JAS group, 1 case of periprosthetic infection and 6 cases of periprosthetic fracture in the AAS group. There was no significant difference in the incidence of complications between the two groups ( P >0.05). At last follow-up, the BASDAI, BASFI, SF-12 MCS, SF-12 PCS, and HHS score of the two groups were significantly improved when compared with those before operation ( P <0.05); but there was no significan difference in the difference of the above parameters before and after operation and the patient satisfaction between the two groups ( P >0.05)., Conclusion: The midterm follow-up outcomes of THA for the treatment of JAS patients were reliable. A low age at disease onset did not exert a significant negative effect on THA reconstruction for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.

Hollow mesoporous nanospheres MoO 2 /C are successfully constructed through metal chelating reaction between molybdenum acetylacetone and glycerol as well as the Kirkendall effect induced by diammonium hydrogen phosphate. MoO 2 nanoparticles coupled by amorphous carbon are assembled to unique zigzag-like hollow mesoporous nanosphere with large specific surface area of 147.7 m 2 g -1 and main pore size of 8.7 nm. The content of carbon is 9.1%. As anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the composite shows high specific capacity and excellent cycling performance. At 0.2 A g -1 , average discharge capacity stabilizes at 1092 mAh g -1 . At 1 A g -1 after 700 cycles, the discharge capacity still reaches 512 mAh g -1 . Impressively, the composite preserves intact after 700 cycles. Even at 5 A g -1 , the discharge capacity can reach 321 mAh g -1 , exhibiting superior rate capability. Various kinetics analyses demonstrate that in electrochemical reaction, the proportion of the surface capacitive effect is higher, and the composite has relatively high diffusion coefficient of Li ions and fast faradic reaction kinetics. Excellent lithium storge performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of zigzag-like hollow mesoporous nanosphere and amorphous carbon, which improves reaction kinetics, structure stability and electronic conductivity of MoO 2 .
