A momentum resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (qRIXS) experimental station with continuously rotatable spectrometers and parallel detection is designed to operate at different beamlines at synchrotron and free electron laser (FEL) facilities. This endstation, currently located at the Advanced Light Source (ALS), has five emission ports on the experimental chamber for mounting the high-throughput modular soft X-ray spectrometers (MXS) [24]. Coupled to the rotation from the supporting hexapod, the scattered X-rays from 27.5° (forward scattering) to 152.5° (backward scattering) relative to the incident photon beam can be recorded, enabling the momentum-resolved RIXS spectroscopy. The components of this endstation are described in details, and the preliminary RIXS measurements on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) reveal the low energy vibronic excitations from the strong electron-phonon coupling at C K edge around σ* band. The grating upgrade option to enhance the performance at low photon energies is presented and the potential of this spectroscopy is discussed in summary.

Near total reflection regime has been widely used in x-ray science, specifically in grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering and in hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In this work, we introduce some practical aspects of using near total reflection (NTR) in ambient pressure XPS and apply this technique to study chemical concentration gradients in a substrate/photoresist system. Experimental data are accompanied by x-ray optical and photoemission simulations to quantitatively probe the photoresist and the interface with the depth accuracy of ∼1 nm. Together, our calculations and experiments confirm that NTR XPS is a suitable method to extract information from buried interfaces with highest depth-resolution, which can help address open research questions regarding our understanding of concentration profiles, electrical gradients, and charge transfer phenomena at such interfaces. The presented methodology is especially attractive for solid/liquid interface studies, since it provides all the strengths of a Bragg-reflection standing-wave spectroscopy without the need of an artificial multilayer mirror serving as a standing wave generator, thus dramatically simplifying the sample synthesis.

Chirped broadband multilayer mirrors are key components to shape attosecond pulses in the XUV range. Compressing high harmonic pulses to their Fourier limit is the major goal for attosecond physics utilizing short pulse pump-probe experiments. Here, we report about the first implementation of multilayers and diffractive optics fulfilling these requirements in the “water-window” spectral range.

The discovery of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the interfaces of perovskite oxides such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has motivated enormous efforts in engineering interfacial functionalities with this type of oxide heterostructures. However, the fundamental origins of the 2DES are still not understood, e.g., the microscopic mechanisms of coexisting interface conductivity and magnetism. Here we report a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation on the depth profile of 2DES-relevant Ti3d interface carriers using depth- and element-specific techniques like standing-wave excited photoemission and resonant inelastic scattering. We found that one type of Ti 3d interface carriers, which give rise to the 2DES are located within three unit cells from the n-type interface in the SrTiO3 layer. Unexpectedly, another type of interface carriers, which are polarity-induced Ti-on-Al antisite defects, reside in the first three unit cells of the opposing LaAlO3 layer (Gê+10 +à). Our findings provide a microscopic picture of how the localized and mobile Ti 3d interface carriers distribute across the interface and suggest that the 2DES and 2D magnetism at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface have disparate explanations as originating from different types of interface carriers.

A 0.5-NA extreme ultraviolet micro-field exposure tool has been installed and commissioned at beamline 12.0.1.4 of the Advanced Light Source synchrotron facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Commissioning has demonstrated a patterning resolution of 13 nm half-pitch with annular 0.35-0.55 illumination; a patterning resolution of 8 nm half-pitch with annular 0.1-0.2 illumination; critical dimension (CD) uniformity of 0.7 nm 1σ on 16 nm nominal CD across 80% of the 200 um x 30 um aberration corrected field of view; aerial image vibration relative to the wafer of 0.75 nn RMS and focus control and focus stepping better than 15 nm.

We demonstrate that combining standing wave (SW) excitation with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) can lead to depth resolution and interface sensitivity for studying orbital and magnetic excitations in correlated oxide heterostructures. SW-RIXS has been applied to multilayer heterostructures consisting of a superconductor La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 (LSCO) and a half-metallic ferromagnet La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO). Easily observable SW effects on the RIXS excitations were found in these LSCO/LSMO multilayers. In addition, we observe different depth distribution of the RIXS excitations. The magnetic excitations are found to arise from the LSCO/LSMO interfaces, and there is also a suggestion that one of the dd excitations comes from the interfaces. SW-RIXS measurements of correlated-oxide and other multilayer heterostructures should provide unique layer-resolved insights concerning their orbital and magnetic excitations, as well as a challenge for RIXS theory to specifically deal with interface effects.

A major remaining challenge in the superconducting cuprates is the unambiguous differentiation of the composition and electronic structure of the CuO2 layers and those of the intermediate layers. The large c axis for these materials permits employing soft x-ray (930.3 eV) standing wave (SW) excitation in photoemission that yields atomic layer-by-layer depth resolution of these properties. Applying SW photoemission to Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ yields the depth distribution of atomic composition and the layer-resolved densities of states. We detect significant Ca presence in the SrO layers and oxygen bonding to three different cations. The layer-resolved valence electronic structure is found to be strongly influenced by the atomic supermodulation structure, as determined by comparison to density functional theory calculations, by Ca-Sr intermixing, and by correlation effects associated with the Cu 3d-3d Coulomb interaction, further clarifying the complex interactions in this prototypical cuprate. Measurements of this type for other quasi-two-dimensional materials with large c represent a promising future direction.

Rational design of low-dimensional electronic phenomena at oxide interfaces is currently considered to be one of the most promising schemes for realizing new energy-efficient logic and memory devices. An atomically abrupt interface between paramagnetic LaNiO3 and antiferromagnetic CaMnO3 exhibits interfacial ferromagnetism, which can be tuned via a thickness-dependent metal-insulator transition in LaNiO3. Once fully understood, such emergent functionality could turn this archetypal Mott-interface system into a key building block for the above-mentioned future devices. Here, we use depth-resolved standing-wave photoemission spectroscopy in conjunction with scanning transmission electron microscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, to demonstrate a depth-dependent charge reconstruction at the LaNiO3/CaMnO3 interface. Our measurements reveal an increased concentration of Mn3+ and Ni2+ cations at the interface, which create an electronic environment favorable for the emergence of interfacial ferromagnetism mediated via the Mn4+-Mn3+ ferromagnetic double exchange and Ni2+-O-Mn4+ superexchange mechanisms. Our findings suggest a strategy for designing functional Mott oxide heterostructures by tuning the interfacial cation characteristics via controlled manipulation of thickness, strain, and ionic defect states.

In this study, we determine with improved accuracy the complex index of refraction n = 1 - δ + iβ of sputtered chromium thin films for photon energies ranging from 25 eV to 813 eV. These data include the first absolute measurements of the absorption fine structure near the Cr-L edge. First, we verified by combining Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry and grazing-incidence x-ray reflectometry that the sputtered thin films were pure Cr with a density consistent with tabulated values. Then, we demonstrated that the Cr surface oxide layer remains stable when the samples are exposed to air for up to 4 years. The Cr absorption coefficient β was determined from the transmittance of freestanding Cr thin films with various thicknesses, measured at the ALS synchrotron radiation source. A model is proposed to correct the transmittance data from the spectral contamination of the source. Finally, we used the new β values, combined with theoretical and tabulated data from the literature, in order to calculate the δ values by the Kramers-Kronig relation. The improvement in the accuracy of β values is demonstrated by the f-sum rule. An additional validation of the new Cr optical constants (δ, β) is performed by comparing the simulated and experimental reflectance of a Cr/B4C multilayer mirror near the Cr-L2,3 edge.

A new streaked soft x-ray imager has been designed for use on high energy-density (HED) physics experiments at the National Ignition Facility based at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This streaked imager uses a slit aperture, single shallow angle reflection from a nickel mirror, and soft x-ray filtering to, when coupled to one of the NIF's x-ray streak cameras, record a 4× magnification, one-dimensional image of an x-ray source with a spatial resolution of less than 90 μm. The energy band pass produced depends upon the filter material used; for the first qualification shots, vanadium and silver-on-titanium filters were used to gate on photon energy ranges of approximately 300-510 eV and 200-400 eV, respectively. A two-channel version of the snout is available for x-ray sources up to 1 mm and a single-channel is available for larger sources up to 3 mm. Both the one and two-channel variants have been qualified on quartz wire and HED physics target shots.

We present an experimental study of the effect of layer interfaces on the x-ray reflectance in Cr/B4C multilayer interference coatings with layer thicknesses ranging from 0.7 nm to 5.4 nm. The multilayers were deposited by magnetron sputtering and by ion beam sputtering. Grazing incidence x-ray reflectometry, soft x-ray reflectometry, and transmission electron microscopy reveal asymmetric multilayer structures with a larger B4C-on-Cr interface, which we modeled with a 1-1.5 nm thick interfacial layer. Reflectance measurements in the vicinity of the Cr L2,3 absorption edge demonstrate fine structure that is not predicted by simulations using the currently tabulated refractive index (optical constants) values for Cr.

The structural and electronic properties of Gd2(Ti1-yZry)2O7 (y=0–1) pyrochlores following a 2.0-MeV Au2+ ion-beam irradiation (∼5.0×1014 Au2+/cm2) have been investigated by Ti 2p and O 1s near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). The irradiation of Gd2(Ti1-yZry)2O7 leads to the phase transformation from the ordered pyrochlore structure (Fd3m) to the defect fluorite structure (Fm3m) regardless of Zr concentration. Irradiated Gd2(Ti1-yZry)2O7 with y<=0.5 are amorphous, although significant short-range order is present. Contrasting to this behavior, compositions with y>=0.75 retain crystallinity in the defect fluorite structure following irradiation. The local structures of Zr4+ in the irradiated Gd2(Ti1-yZry)2O7 with y>=0.75 determined by NEXAFS are the same as in the cubic fluorite-structured yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y–ZrO2), thereby providing conclusive evidence for the phase transformation. The TiO6 octahedra present in Gd2(Ti1-yZry)2O7 are completely modified by ion-beam irradiation to TiOx polyhedra, and the Ti coordination is increased to eight with longer Ti–O bond distances. The similarity between cation sites and the degree of disorder in Gd2Zr2O7 facilitate the rearrangement and relaxation of Gd, Zr, and O ions/defects. This inhibits amorphization during the ion-beam-induced phase transition to the radiation-resistant defect fluorite structure, which is in contrast to the ordered Gd2Ti2O7. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of a nearly defect-free reticle blank is an important challenge facing extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL). The core element of an EUVL reticle blank is the reflective Mo/Si multilayer film, and deposition of Mo/Si on very small substrate defects can result in critical Mo/Si phase defects. In this article we present a method for repairing Mo/Si multilayer film phase defects in EUVL reticle blanks. An electron beam is used to deposit energy in the immediate vicinity of the defect, producing a small local contraction of the layer thicknesses due to silicide formation at the Mo/Si interfaces. We show in simulations that this contraction can significantly reduce the original structural deformation. We also present experimental results showing that it is possible to use an electron beam to controllably produce depressions in Mo/Si with nanometer-scale depths, and that this can be achieved without significantly impairing the reflective properties of the Mo/Si multilayer films. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. Samples of trans-polyacetylene, (CH)x, were doped with the magnetic ion, FeCl-4, by immersion in nitromethane solutions of FeCl3. The resulting dopant levels ranged over two orders of magnitude. ESR spectra and spin–lattice relaxation times, T1, were measured for the undoped polymer and lightly doped polymer over the temperature range 1.5–120 K. The ESR spectra of trans-(CH)x lightly doped (<1 mol % Fe-4 ) with FeCl-4 exhibit a narrow (ΔH≊5–10 G at 4.2 K) g=2.003 signal which decreases in relative amplitude with increasing dopant level, and broad signals at g=2 (ΔH≊500 G), which increases with increasing dopant level, and at g=4.3 (ΔH≊200 G). The narrow signal is the intrinsic trans-(CH)x signal; the broad signals are attributable to iron. T1 for the narrow signal is approximately one-half of the value of undoped trans-(CH)x at 4.2 K. dc susceptibilities for all of the doped samples were measured over the temperature range of 1.5–300 K. The magnetically doped samples all exhibit Curie law behavior, and an analysis of the magnetization data yields an effective moment, Jeff, equal to 2.77, close to the value 5/2 expected for Fe(III). We employ X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy at the boron K-edge and the phosphorus L2,3-edge to study the structural properties of cubic boron phosphide (c-BP) samples. The X-ray absorption spectra are modeled from first-principles within the density functional theory framework using the excited electron core-hole (XCH) approach. A simple structural model of a perfect c-BP crystal accurately reproduces the P L2,3-edge, however it fails to describe the broad and gradual onset of the B K-edge. Simulations of the spectroscopic signatures in boron 1s excitations of intrinsic point defects and the hexagonal BP crystal phase show that these additions to the structural model cannot reproduce the broad pre-edge of the experimental spectrum. Calculated formation enthalpies show that, during the growth of c-BP, it is possible that amorphous boron phases can be grown in conjunction with the desired boron phosphide crystalline phase. In combination with experimental and theoretically obtained X-ray absorption spectra of an amorphous boron structure, which have a similar broad absorption onset in the B K-edge spectrum as the cubic boron phosphide samples, we provide evidence for the presence of amorphous boron clusters in the synthesized c-BP samples. Recent theoretical work has shown for the first time how the experimentally observed property of “self-healing” of the superhard semiconductor boron subphosphide (B12P2) arises through a process of mediated defect recombination. Experimental verification of the proposed mechanism would require a method that can detect and distinguish between the various defect populations that can exist in B12P2. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) is such a method and in this work we present experimentally collected spectra of B12P2 samples with varying crystalline qualities. By simulating the X-ray spectroscopic signatures of potential crystallographic point defects from first-principles within the density functional theory framework, the presence of defect populations can be determined through spectroscopic fingerprinting. Our results find an increasing propensity for the presence of phosphorus vacancy defects in samples deposited at lower temperatures but no evidence for comparable populations of boron vacancies in all the samples that have been studied. The absence of large amounts of boron vacancies is in line with the “self-healing” property of B12P2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The icosahedral boride B12P2 has been reported to exhibit "self-healing" properties, after transmission electron microscopy recordings of sample surfaces, which were exposed to highly energetic particle beams, revealed little to no damage. In this work, employing calculations from first-principles within the density functional theory (DFT) framework, the structural characteristics of boron interstitial and vacancy defects in B12P2 are investigated. Using nudged elastic band simulations, the diffusion properties of interstitial and vacancy defects and their combination, in the form of Frenkel defect pairs, are studied. We find that boron icosahedra maintain their structural integrity even when in a degraded state in the presence of a vacancy or interstitial defect and that the diffusion activation energy for the recombination of an interstitial vacany pair can be as low as 3 meV, in line with the previously reported observation of "self-healing". Recently several experimental transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies have reported the observation of nanoscale triangular defects in mono- and multilayer hexagonal boron nitride (A-BN). First-principles calculations are employed to study the thermodynamical stability and spectroscopic properties of these triangular defects and the chemical nature of their edge termination. Oxygen-terminated defects are found to be significantly more stable than defects with nitrogen-terminated edges. Simulated x-ray absorption spectra of the boron K edge for oxygen-terminated defects show excellent agreement with experimental x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) measurements on defective h-BN films with oxygen impurities. Finally, we show that the structural model for oxygen defects in A-BN as deduced from the simulated core-level spectroscopy is intrinsically linked to the equilateral triangle shape of defects as observed in many recent electron microscopy measurements. A graded and broadband Mo/Si multilayer mirror for EUV spectroscopy is demonstrated. This mirror has an average reflectivity profile of 16% in the wavelength region from 15 nm to 17 nm and an effective area of 1100-1500 mm². This reflectivity is about 4 times larger than that of a standard Mo/Si multilayer mirror on a 1 in. diameter substrate, showing that the mirror can be used for measuring EUV fluorescence at wavelengths in the region around 15 nm to 17 nm. We describe a new in operando approach for the investigation of heterogeneous processes at solid/liquid interfaces with elemental and chemical specificity which combines the preparation of thin liquid films using the meniscus method with standing wave ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy [Nemšák et al., Nat. Commun., 5, 5441 (2014)]. This technique provides information about the chemical composition across liquid/solid interfaces with sub-nanometer depth resolution and under realistic conditions of solution composition and concentration, pH, as well as electrical bias. A novel multilayer material system consisting of lanthanum and molybdenum nano-layers for both broadband and highly reflecting multilayer mirrors in the energy range between 80 and 130 eV is presented. The simulation and design of these multilayers were based on an improved set of optical constants, which were recorded by extreme ultraviolet (XUV)/soft-x-ray absorption measurements on freestanding lanthanum nano-films between 30 eV and 1.3 keV. Lanthanum-molybdenum (La/Mo) multilayer mirrors were produced by ion-beam sputtering and characterized through both x-ray and XUV reflectivity measurements.We demonstrate the ability to precisely simulate and realize aperiodic stacks. Their stability against ambient air conditions is demonstrated. Finally, the La/Mo mirrors were used in the generation of single attosecond pulses from high-harmonic cut-off spectra above 100 eV. Isolated 200 attosecond-long pulses were measured by XUV-pump/IR-probe streaking experiments and characterized using frequency-resolved optical gating for complete reconstruction of attosecond bursts (FROG/CRAB) analyses. We present a variable line-space grating spectrometer for soft x-rays that covers the photon energy range between 130 and 650 eV. The optical design is based on the Hettrick–Underwood principle and tailored to synchrotron-based studies of radiation-sensitive biological samples. The spectrometer is able to record the entire spectral range in one shot, i.e., without any mechanical motion, at a resolving power of 1200 or better. Despite its slitless design, such a resolving power can be achieved for a source spot as large as (30×3000) μm2, which is important for keeping beam damage effects in radiation-sensitive samples low. The high spectrometer efficiency allows recording of comprehensive two-dimensional resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS) maps with good statistics within several minutes. This is exemplarily demonstrated for a RIXS map of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, which was taken within 10 min. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diffractive optics play an important role in a variety of fields such as astronomy, microscopy, and lithography. In the extreme ultraviolet region of the spectrum they have been difficult to make due to the extremely precise control required of their surface structure. We have developed a robust fabrication technique that achieves the required topographic control through the deposition of a thin film of Si on a Cr etch stop. We have fabricated binary phase gratings using this approach that have an efficiency of 80% of the theoretical maximum. The performance of CsI photocathodes has been characterized for use with grazing incidence soft x rays. The total electron yield and pulsed quantum efficiency of a CsI photocathode has been measured in a reflection geometry as a function of photon energy (100 eV to 1 keV), angle of incidence, and the electric field between the anode and photocathode. The total electron yield and pulsed quantum efficiency increase as the x-ray penetration depth approaches the secondary electron escape depth. Unit quantum efficiency in a grazing incidence geometry is demonstrated. A weak electric-field dependence is observed for the total yield measurements; while no significant dependence is found for the pulsed quantum efficiency. The effect of the pulse height distribution on the detective quantum efficiency is discussed. Theoretical predictions agree accurately with experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of highly reflective multilayer mirrors for use in the wavelength region around 6 nm is desired for X-ray photoemission spectroscopy for inner-shell excitation using a Schwarzschild objective. For this application, reflectivity is the most critical parameter determining the performance of multilayer mirrors, because the reflectivity of multilayers in the 6 nm region is generally very low. We have designed CoCr/C multilayer mirrors with a comparatively high reflectivity at around normal incidence and have fabricated them by magnetron sputtering. Solid-based surface high-harmonic generation from a tape is experimentally studied. By operating at mildly relativistic normalized laser strengths a0<=0.2, harmonics up to the 17th order are efficiently produced in the coherent wake emission (CWE) regime. CWE pulse properties, such as divergence, energy, conversion efficiency, and spectrum, are investigated for various tape materials and drive laser conditions. A clear correlation between surface roughness and harmonic beam divergence is found. At the measured pulse properties for the 15th harmonic (conversion efficiency ∼6.5×10-7, divergence ∼7-15 mrad), the 100-mJ-level drive laser produces several MWs of extreme ultra-violet pulses. The spooling tape configuration enables multi-Hz operation over thousands of shots, making this source attractive as a seed to the few-Hz laser-plasma-accelerator-driven free-electron laser (FEL). We demonstrate the utility of resonant soft x-ray scattering in characterizing heterogeneous chemical structure at nanometer length scales in polymer films and nanostructures. Resonant enhancements near the carbon K edge bring bond specific contrast and increased sensitivity to bridge a gap between x-ray absorption contrast in chemical sensitive imaging and higher spatial resolution hard x-ray and neutron small-angle scattering. Chemical bond sensitivity is illustrated in the scattering from latex spheres of differing chemistry and size. Resonant enhancements are then shown to yield sensitivity to heterogeneity in two-phase polymer films for which hard x-ray and nondeuterated neutron scattering lack sensitivity due to low contrast. Deposition of multilayers on saw-tooth substrates is a key step in the fabrication of multilayer blazed gratings (MBG) for extreme ultraviolet and soft x-rays. Growth of the multilayers can be perturbed by shadowing effects caused by the highly corrugated surface of the substrates, which results in distortion of the multilayer stack structure and degradation of performance of MBGs. To minimize the shadowing effects, we used an ion-beam sputtering machine with a highly collimated atomic flux to deposit Mo/Si multilayers on saw-tooth substrates. The sputtering conditions were optimized by finding a balance between smoothening and roughening processes in order to minimize degradation of the groove profile in the course of deposition and at the same time to keep the interfaces of a multilayer stack smooth enough for high efficiency. An optimal value of energy of 200 eV for sputtering Kr+ ions was found by deposition of test multilayers on flat substrates at a range of ion energies. Two saw-tooth substrates were deposited at energies of 200 eV and 700 eV for the sputtering ions. It was found that reduction of the ion energy improved the blazing performance of the MBG and resulted in a 40% gain in the diffraction efficiency due to better replication of the groove profile by the multilayer. As a result of the optimization performed, an absolute diffraction efficiency of 28.8% was achieved for the 2nd blaze order of the MBG with a groove density of 7350 lines/mm at a wavelength of 13.5 nm. Details of the growth behavior of the multilayers on flat and saw-tooth substrates are discussed in terms of the linear continuous model of film growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
