As freshwater supplies decrease, adopting sustainable practices like water- and energy-efficient irrigation is crucial, particularly in resource-constrained regions. Here, farmers often cannot purchase precision irrigation equipment, which achieves high water and energy efficiencies via full automation. Currently, no irrigation methods exist that combine automatic scheduling of events with manual operation of valves, familiar hardware on low-income farms. This work synthesizes functional requirements for a tool that could address efficiency needs while integrating into current manual practices. Then, a design concept for an automatic scheduling and manual operation (AS-MO) human–machine interaction (HMI) that meets these requirements is proposed. Two design stages of the AS-MO HMI were evaluated by farmers and market stakeholders in three countries. Results show that farmers in Kenya and Jordan valued the proposed AS-MO HMI because they could increase efficiency on their farms without the cost or complexity of automatic valves. In Morocco, a possible market was found, but a majority of participants preferred full automation. Interviewees provided feedback on how to improve the tool's design in future iterations. If adopted at scale, the proposed AS-MO tool could increase efficiency on farms that otherwise cannot afford current precision irrigation technology, improving sustainable agriculture worldwide. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the current study examined the roles of psychological factors and serious games in the promotion of physical activity and wellbeing. The aim was to investigate the use and evaluation of a Webbased application named BehaviourCoach through the following research questions: How do users experience and evaluate this web-application for health promotion? How do elements of serious games and participants' health status relate to intention to use this web-application? Participants (N = 55) engaged with BehaviourCoach for a duration of 45 minutes. Physical activity, psychological wellbeing, user experience, evaluation and intention to use a digital tool for health as well as demographic information were self-reported. On average, participants were sufficiently active as a group to meet the guidelines of 150 minutes per week of activity. They also reported moderate psychological wellbeing. The evaluation of the web application was positive, with participants expressing enjoyment, reporting that they found the game to support social interaction, and that the web application interface's navigation was user-friendly. These factors were found to be positively related to intention to use the digital tool for health promotion in the future. In addition, participants' levels of overall health and subjective wellbeing were predictive of intention to use the web-application for quick results. We examined the performance of a group of people with moderately severe Alzheimer's type dementia on a naming task. We found that functional information plays an important role in determining naming performance on both living and non-living things. Perceptual information may play some role in naming living things. We also found some evidence that the semantic category to which an item belongs may also have some effect on naming performance. We argue that both the sensory-functional and domain-specific knowledge hypotheses may be correct: the brain is to some organized on taxonomic grounds, while the semantic representations of living and non-living things depend differentially on perceptual and functional information. These representations can be differentially disrupted by damage to modality-specific stores. At a moderate level of severity, dementia causes global damage that has the effect of disrupting both the localized taxonomic and the modality-specific stores. Construction project teams require social capital. When present in appropriate forms, it creates the social cohesion through which individuals accept project goals as their own. It lets team members share knowledge when present and reveal when it is missing. In education, social learning helps students appreciate the need for social capital appropriate to team performance. In practice, social capital enables the project team learning that overcomes project-specific challenges. Despite this importance, little is known about how students perceive social capital or the compatibility of that understanding with construction project needs. To characterise this aspect of ‘graduateness,’ collective understanding of social capital was elicited from construction students in a Scottish university by free recall. Analysis was structured around four dimensions of social capital: cohesion, legitimacy & authenticity, sharing, and safety. Notions of friendship were found to dominate student understanding of their social capital even though this understanding derived from settings where the need for capital to support team performance is emphasized. The potential for misalignment between the capital that graduating students bring into practice with that required by project teams was apparent. The European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO) European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) provides power, communications, sensors, and data infrastructure for continuous, high-resolution, (near-)real-time, interactive ocean observations across a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary range of research areas including biology, geology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and computer science, from polar to subtropical environments, through the water column down to the abyss. Eleven deep-sea and four shallow nodes span from the Arctic through the Atlantic and Mediterranean, to the Black Sea. Coordination among the consortium nodes is being strengthened through the EMSOdev project (H2020), which will produce the EMSO Generic Instrument Module (EGIM). Early installations are now being upgraded, for example, at the Ligurian, Ionian, Azores, and Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) nodes. Significant findings have been flowing in over the years; for example, high-frequency surface and subsurface water-column measurements of the PAP node show an increase in seawater pC02 (from 339 patm in 2003 to 353 patm in 2011) with little variability in the mean air-sea C02 flux. In the Central Eastern Atlantic, the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands open-ocean canary node (aka ESTOC station) has a long-standing time series on water column physical, biogeochemical, and acidification processes that have contributed to the assessment efforts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). EMSO not only brings together countries and disciplines but also allows the pooling of resources and coordination to assemble harmonized data into a comprehensive regional ocean picture, which will then be made available to researchers and stakeholders worldwide on an open and interoperable access basis. Drawing on social identity theory and social cognitive theory, this research was designed to investigate the role played by group identification, self-efficacy and outcome expectations in physical activity behavior. Healthy adult participants (N = 130) who identified strongly with an exercise referent group reported higher levels of physical activity, and this relationship was mediated by self-efficacy and outcome expectations. This study adds to the existing literature on the effects of social groups on health and is one of the first to examine the interplay of personal factors and group membership on physical activity. Objectives: To retrospectively establish the nature and frequency of Axis I psychiatric disorders pre- and post-TBI. Participants: One hundred participants who were 0.5 to 5.5 years post mild to severe TBI and 87 informants, each evaluated at a single time point. Main Measure: The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Disorders (SCID-I). Results: Preinjury, 52% received a psychiatric diagnosis, most commonly substance use disorder (41%), followed by major depressive disorder (17%) and anxiety (13%). Postinjury, 65% received a diagnosis, of which major depression became the most common (45%), followed by anxiety (38%) and substance use disorder (21%). Frequency of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and phobias rose from preinjury to postinjury. More than two-thirds of postinjury depression and anxiety cases were novel and showed poor resolution rates. Few novel cases of substance use disorder were noted. Psychotic disorders, somatoform disorders, and eating disorders occurred at frequencies similar to those in the general population. Conclusions: A high frequency of postinjury psychiatric disorders was evident up to 5.5 years postinjury, with many novel cases of depression and anxiety. Individuals with TBI should be screened for psychiatric disorders at various time points post-injury without reliance on history of psychiatric problems to predict who is at risk, so that appropriate intervention can be offered. Critical mutations in the membrane-spanning domains of proteins cause many human diseases. We report the expression in Escherichia coli of helix-loop-helix segments of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) chloride channel domain in milligram quantities. Analysis of gel migration patterns of these constructs, in conjunction with circular dichroism spectroscopy, demonstrate that a neutral-to-charged, CF-phenotypic point mutation of a hydrophobic residue (V232D) in the CFTR transmembrane (TM) helix 4 induces a hydrogen bond with neighboring wild type Gln 207 in TM helix 3. As an electrostatic crosslink within a hydrocarbon phase, such a hydrogen bond could alter the normal assembly and alignment of CFTR TM helices and/or impede their movement in response to substrate transport. Our results imply that membrane proteins may be vulnerable to loss of function through formation of membrane-buried interhelical hydrogen bonds by partnering of proximal polar side chains.
