A method was developed to analytically distinguish between the ventilated (v) and nonventilated (nv) fractions of water‐soluble ions in deposits of particle indoors. The indicative method was based on low‐cost passive outdoor and indoor sampling of the particle and ion deposits and NO2 gas and analysis of the regression values and residuals of the correlations between these parameters. The method was applied to measurements in the Pieskowa Skała Castle Museum in Poland. A dominating source of "soil and building dust" was indicated all year round, probably partly from renovation works of the castle, with larger total infiltration in the winter–spring (W‐S) but with a higher proportion of ventilation ingress in the summer–autumn (S‐A). About 60%–80%, by mass, of the water‐soluble ions in the soil and building dust were calcium and probably some magnesium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO3)2, Mg(HCO3)2) and about 10%–20% sulfates (SO4−−) with calcium (Ca++) and several other cations. The other main source of the ion deposits was indicated to be air pollution, with chloride (Cl−), sulfate (SO4−−), and nitrate (NO3−), from outdoor combustion sources, like traffic, residential heating, and industry. These were mainly v from outdoors in the colder parts of the year, but also to the more open locations in the S‐A. A small source of nv sulfate (SO4−−) was identified inside two showcases in the S‐A. The study showed good enclosure protection of the museum objects against exposure to particle pollution, but also the need to avoid the trapping of particle pollution inside showcases or closed rooms. Pollutant gases pose a significant risk to some cultural heritage objects, and surveys have shown that the professionals involved consider themselves to lack knowledge to fully assess risk. Three approaches towards risk assessment, research results, standards and damage functions have been considered. An assessment tool has been developed, collating over 4000 research reports into a scheme for the impact on 22 materials of acetic and formic acids, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and reduced sulphur gases. HERIe was used to model the effect of changes to indoor climate on the risk of humidity-induced mechanical damage (cracking and plastic deformation) to wooden panels painted with stiff gesso in two Norwegian medieval stone churches: Kinn (mean relative humidity (RH, %) = 79%) on the humid west coast, and Ringsaker (mean RH = 49%) in the drier eastern part of the country. The risk involved in moving cultural heritage objects (paint on wood) between the churches and a conservation studio with more "ideal", stable conditions was also modeled. A hypothetical reduction in RH to ~65% and, proportionally, of the climate fluctuations in Kinn, and an increase in the RH in Ringsaker to a more stable value of ~63% via conservation heating, were found to improve (Kinn) and uphold (Ringsaker) the conformity to relevant standards and significantly reduce the risk of damage, except in the scenario of moving objects from Ringsaker to a conservation studio, when the risk would increase. The use of conservation heating could save ~50% of the heating cost. The estimated risk reductions may be less relevant for objects kept in situ, where cracks in the original paint and gesso have developed historically. The aim of this work was to assess how improvements to the indoor environment could affect the future condition, frequency and costs of major conservation-cleaning campaigns on the monumental paintings (1909-1916) by Edvard Munch, centrally located in the Aula assembly hall of the University of Oslo. A lower soiling rate is expected to reduce the need for frequent and major cleaning campaigns. Estimations were performed using the freely available NILU-EnvCul web-model. The conservation of these large, mostly unvarnished, oil paintings is challenging, and it is important to understand the potential benefits of preventive conservation measures. The results from the model suggested benefits from preventive conservation in protecting the paintings, and as a cost-efficient strategy to reduce the soiling and cleaning frequency. The model results indicated that an improvement in the indoor air quality in the Aula, of 50-80% as compared to the 1916-2009 average, would increase the time until the next similar major conservation cleaning campaign from approximately 45 years to between about 85 and 165 years. This should give a 45-70% reduction in the respective conservation costs. This saving was probably initiated by improvements in the recent past, before the last Aula campaign in 2009-11. The article discusses a research study conducted into the evaluation of microclimate conditions in the environment withing museum enclosures for art objects. Topics discussed include the use of lead-based piezolectric quartz crystal (PQC) as the material for monitoring museum enclosures, the experiments conducted using dosimeters, and their use on test frames. The article also includes the results of the performed research tests using L-PQC crystals and the conclusion derived from the research project.

Results from the international cooperative programme on effects on materials including historic and cultural monuments are presented from the period 1987-2014 and include pollution data (SO2, NO2, O3, HNO3 and PM10), corrosion data (carbon steel, weathering steel, zinc, copper, aluminium and limestone) and data on the soiling of modern glass for nineteen industrial, urban and rural test sites in Europe. Both one-year and four-year corrosion data are presented. Corrosion and pollution have decreased significantly and a shift in the magnitude is generally observed around 1997: from a sharp decrease to a more modest decrease or to a constant level without any decrease. SO2 levels, carbon steel and copper corrosion have decreased even after 1997, which is more pronounced in urban areas, while corrosion of the other materials shows no decrease after 1997, when looking at one-year values. When looking at four-year values, however, there is a significant decrease after 1997 for zinc, which is not evident when looking at the one-year values. This paper also presents results on corrosion kinetics by comparison of one- and four-year values. For carbon steel and copper, kinetics is relatively independent of sites while other materials, especially zinc, show substantial variation in kinetics for the first four years, which needs to be considered when producing new and possibly improved models for corrosion. Air pollution is one of the environmental influences that degrade cultural heritage objects situated indoors. Other essential influences, such as temperature, relative humidity, and light are often well monitored. The presence of air pollutants is less often measured or included in risk assessment. The MEMORI®technology presented in this paper was developed as a tool for easy measurement and assessment of the general risk of degradation of heritage objects situated indoors due to indoor exposure to air pollutants. MEMORI dosimetry was performed in locations belonging to English Heritage and Tate (both located in London) and the National Archives of Norway in Oslo, to assess air quality. The related damage risk for collection objects and the protection offered by display and storage designs was assessed. A high level of acidic effect was observed inside a number of showcases, and a high level of oxidizing effect was observed in some room locations. Relatively simple mitigation measures, such as constructing tightly sealed showcases using low emitting materials, installing active carbon absorbing media inside a ‘microclimate’ frame, and using cardboard storage boxes for paper, significantly improved air quality. Overall, implementation of such measures is likely to improve the preservation of objects and reduce conservation costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A modelling tool was developed, as a tutorial and for research purposes, to predict the future condition, lifetime, and time before repeated conservation intervention for cultural heritage objects, depending on their historical condition, present conservation and changes in the environment. Model application was illustrated for a locomotive exposed outdoor at the Warsaw Railway Museum, Poland, and for the Oseberg Viking ship in the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, Norway. The modelling suggested, tentatively, that the lifetime without future conservation of the locomotive surface would be from 6 to 30 years, but that the object could last many hundred (~800) years. To maintain the locomotive in the present condition conservation intervention would be needed every seven to 14 years. Shielding of the locomotive from precipitation could increase its lifetime, and time between conservation interventions, with 40%. One present conservation intervention could increase the lifetime with 20%. The lifetime of the Viking ship was suggested to be from 74 to 234 years. Conservation intervention was suggested every 15 to 66 years. Improvement of the air quality in the museum could increase its total lifetime, and time between conservation interventions, with 6%. One present conservation intervention could increase the lifetime with 26%. The most critical risk factor for the future preservation of the objects, excluding possible risks for sudden catastrophic events, was found to be to rate of any accelerating degradation processes. This paper investigates the effects of inorganic (NO2 and O3) and volatile organic acid (acetic acid) pollutants on the degradation of dammar varnish in museum environments. Model paint varnish samples based on dammar resin were investigated by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Dammar is a natural triterpenoid resin, commonly used as a paint varnish. Samples were subjected to accelerated ageing by different levels of pollutants (NO2 and O3 and acetic acid) over a range of relative humidities (RH) and then analysed. The results revealed that as the dose of the pollutant was increased, so did the degree of oxidation and cross-linking of the resin. Most interestingly, it was shown for the first time that exposure to acetic acid vapour resulted in the production of an oxidised and cross-linked resin, comparable to the resin obtained under exposure to NO2 and O3. These conclusions were supported by the analyses of model varnishes exposed for about two years in selected museum environments, where the levels of pollutants had been previously measured. Exposures were performed both within and outside the selected microclimate frames for paintings. Results showed that varnishes placed within the microclimate frames were not always better preserved than those exposed outside the frames. For some sites, the results highlighted the protective effects of the frames from outdoor generated pollutants, such as NO2 and O3. For other sites, the results showed that the microclimate frames acted as traps for the volatile organic acids emitted by the wooden components of the mc-frames, which damaged the varnish. Surface deposition velocities of O3, NO2 and SO2 were measured in chamber experiments at relative air humidity ranging from 0% to 90% and obtained from literature screening, for a range of material surfaces typically found indoors. The data were compiled in tables comprising 24 material classes and five values of relative air humidity for each gas. Interpolation between data points and extrapolation based on measurements on similar materials were used to fill in the tables where values from measurement were lacking. The tabulated values should be useful in estimating indoor concentrations of these gases when outdoor concentrations are known and there are no indoor sources. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study assesses changes since 1980 in the maintenance cost of the façades of the historical 17th to 19th century buildings of the Oslo Quadrature, Norway, due to atmospheric chemical wear, including the influence of air pollution. Bottom up estimations by exposure–response functions for an SO2 dominated situation reported in the literature for 1979 and 1995 were compared with calculations for the present (2002–2014) multi-pollutant situation. The present maintenance cost, relative to the total façade area, due to atmospheric wear and soiling was found to be about 1.6 Euro/m2 per year. The exposure to local air pollution, mainly particulate matter and NOx gases, contributed to 0.6 Euro/m2 (38%), of which the cost due to wear of renderings was about 0.4 Euro/m2 (22%), that due to the cleaning of glass was 0.2 Euro/m2 (11%), and that due to wear of other façade materials was 0.07 Euro/m2 (5%). The maintenance cost due to the atmospheric wear was found to be about 3.5%, and that due to the local air pollution about 1.1% of the total municipal building maintenance costs. The present (2002–2014) maintenance costs, relative to the areas of the specific materials, due to atmospheric wear are probably the highest for painted steel surfaces, about 8–10 Euro/m2, then about 2 Euro/m2 for façade cleaning and the maintenance of rendering, and down to 0.3 Euro/m2 for the maintenance of copper roofs. This paper reports estimated maintenance-cleaning costs, cost savings and cleaning interval increases for structural surfaces and windows in Europe obtainable by reducing the air pollution. Methodology and data from the ICP-materials project were used. The average present (2018) cleaning costs for sheltered white painted steel surfaces and modern glass due to air pollution over background, was estimated to be ~2.5 Euro/m2∙year. Hypothetical 50% reduction in the air pollution was found to give savings in these cleaning costs of ~1.5 Euro/m2∙year. Observed reduction in the air pollution, from 2002–2005 until 2011–2014, have probably increased the cleaning interval for white painted steel with ~100% (from 12 to 24 years), representing reductions in the single intervention cleaning costs from 7 to 4%/year (= % of one cleaning investment, per year during the cleaning interval) and for the modern glass with ~65% (from 0.85 to 1.3 years), representing reductions in the cleaning cost from 124 to 95%/year. The cleaning cost reductions, obtainable by 50% reduction in air pollution, would have been ~3 %/year for white painted steel and ~60%/year for the modern glass, representing ~100 and 50% additional cleaning interval increases. The wood rot decay of structures and buildings in Norway represents high costs. This paper reports the observed trends for the potential rot decay of Norwegian wood structures in the cities of Oslo and Bergen over the recent 55 years, calculated as the "wood rot climate index" developed by Scheffer, and compares the reports with previous reported values based on climate change modelling. The observed change in the wood rot climate index was close to the modelling result. Bergen is exposed directly to the westerly Atlantic winds and has among the highest rain amounts in Norway, whereas Oslo is shielded by the Scandinavian mountain chain and has much less rain. The change in the wood rot climate index since 1961 was about 20% in both cities, but the trend in the index (climate index change per year) was about 80% stronger in Bergen. The absolute index changes were largest in the summer; then spring (50 to 60% of the summer increase); and small, zero, or even negative (autumn in Oslo) in the remaining seasons. The relative changes were higher in the spring than summer and very high in Bergen in the winter from a low value. The change to positive index values in the spring and winter indicates temperature and humidity conditions favoring the growth of wood rot and, thus, extended the rot duration through the year. The expected increase in the future wood rot decay potential in Norway shows the need for increased focus on adaption measures to reduce the related damages and costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports 1 year of monthly average NO 2 indoor to outdoor (I/O) concentrations measured in 10 European museums, and a simple steady-state box model that explains the annual variation. The measurements were performed in the EU FP5 project Master (EVK-CT-2002-00093). The work provides extensive documentation of the annual variation of NO 2 I/O concentration ratios, with ratios above unity in the summer, in situations with no indoor emissions of NO 2 . The modelling included the most relevant production and removal processes of NO 2 and showed that the outdoor photolysis was the probable main explanation of the annual trends in the NO 2 I/O concentration ratios., (© 2022 The Authors.
