PurposeUreteral access sheaths (UAS) pose the risk of severe ureteral injury. Our prior studies revealed forces ≤6 Newtons (N) prevent ureteral injury. Accordingly, we sought to define the force urologists and residents-in-training typically use when placing a UAS.Materials & methodsAmong urologists and urology residents attending two annual urological conferences in 2022, 121 individuals were recruited for the study. Participants inserted 12Fr, 14Fr, and 16Fr ureteral access sheaths into a male genitourinary model containing a concealed force sensor; they also provided demographic information. Analysis was completed using t-tests and Chi-square tests to identify group differences when passing a 16Fr sheath UAS. Participant traits associated with surpassing or remaining below a minimal force threshold were also explored via polychotomous logistic regression.ResultsParticipant force distributions were: ≤4N (29%), >6N (45%), and >8N (32%). More years of practice were significantly associated with exerting >6N relative to forces between 4-6N; results for >8N relative to 4N-8N were similar. Compared to high-volume ureteroscopists (those performing >20 ureteroscopies/month), physicians performing ≤20 ureteroscopies/month were significantly less likely to exert forces ≤4N (p=0.017 and p=0.041). Of those surpassing 6N and 8N, 15% and 18% respectively were high-volume ureteroscopists.ConclusionsDespite years of practice or volume of monthly ureteroscopic cases performed, most urologists failed to pass 16Fr access sheaths within the ideal range of 4N-6N (74% of participants) or within a predefined safe range of 4N-8N (61% of participants).

ABSTRACT Introduction: Urethral stricture is a common, albeit complex, condition that predominantly affects men. The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Patient-Reported Outcome Measure questionnaire for patients undergoing urethroplasty (USS-PROM) into Brazilian Portuguese using validated psychometric criteria. Materials and Methods: The process involved translating and culturally adapting the original USS-PROM into Brazilian Portuguese (USS-PROMbr), synthesizing, back-translating, cross-culturally adapting, and analyzing the pre-final version with experts from our committee. This pre-version was administered to 10 patients who had undergone urethroplasty by the Reconstructive Urology team at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre for face validation, linguistic, and semantic adjustments, resulting in the final USS-PROMbr version. Subsequently, well-established psychometric criteria, including content validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reproducibility, were assessed after administering the questionnaire to a total of 56 patients, with 50 of them responding to the test and retest. Results: Evaluation of the pre-final version identified 15 questions as clear, and only one question was considered somewhat unclear necessitating modifications based on patient suggestions and subsequent reassessment by the research team. Psychometric criteria demonstrated good content validity, with a content validity index exceeding 0.80 for all questions; good internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha of 0.77, ranging from 0.70 to 0.78 with the exclusion of any item, and item-total correlations ranging from 0.33 to 0.67. The test-retest intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.74 for the lower urinary tract symptoms construct (Q1-Q6). Conclusion: The USS-PROMbr demonstrated acceptable cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric properties, making it a valid and useful tool for evaluating patients undergoing urethroplasty.

Fission and gamma decay probabilities of 237U and 239Np have been measured, for the first time simultaneously in dedicated experiments, via the surrogate reactions 238U(3He, 4He) and 238U(3He,d), respectively. While a good agreement between our data and neutron-induced data is found for fission probabilities, gamma decay probabilities are several times higher than the corresponding neutron-induced data for each studied nucleus. We study the role of the different spin distributions populated in the surrogate and neutron-induced reactions. The compound nucleus spin distribution populated in the surrogate reaction is extracted from the measured gamma-decay probabilities, and used as input parameter in the statistical model to predict fission probabilities to be compared to our data. A strong disagreement between our data and the prediction is obtained. Preliminary results from an additional dedicated experiment confirm the observed discrepancies, indicating the need of a better understanding of the formation and decay processes of the compound nucleus.

Prior laser studies have demonstrated that as the temperature of a medium increases, the amount of energy delivered to the target increases. We sought to investigate the role of irrigation fluid temperature on Thulium fiber laser (TFL) urolith ablation. 360 calculi were divided in vitro according to chemical composition: calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM), cystine (CYS), struvite (STR), calcium phosphate (CAP), uric acid (UA), and calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD). A 200 μm TFL was placed directly on each stone, while immersed in 0.9% NaCl at four different temperatures (25 C, 37 C, 44 C, 60 C) and a single laser pulse administered at distinct energy settings (0.1 J, 0.5 J, 1.5 J). Optical coherence tomography assessed the resulting ablation cone volume. Mean stone volume and porosity were evaluated through ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc analysis. A multivariate generalized model for each composition accounted for the impact of fluid temperature and laser energy on stone ablation. Warmer fluid temperatures yielded greater ablation cone volumes for most energy settings, excluding UA stones. When accounting for chemical composition, higher tensile strength stones (COM, CYS) benefited most from warmer fluid in comparison to frangible stones (CAP, STR). The effects of increasing fluid temperature are modest relative to laser pulse energy as a large temperature increase (i.e. 7ºC) is equivalent to a minor energy increase (i.e. 0.1 J). For non-UA stones, TFL ablation efficiency increases with warmer irrigation fluid. The effect, albeit modest compared to laser pulse energy, was most notable for COM and CYS stones. • Preoperative biopsy is standard of care for other solid organ systems. • Renal mass biopsy (RMB) accuracy and safety matches other solid organ biopsies. • RMB should be performed in any patient with a SRM seeking treatment. • RMB for small renal masses (SRM) reduces surgeries for benign renal masses. Current guidelines do not mandate routine preoperative renal mass biopsy (RMB) for small renal masses (SRMs), which results in a considerable rate (18%–26%) of needless nephrectomy/partial nephrectomy for benign renal tumors. In light of this ongoing practice, a narrative review was conducted to examine the role of routine RMB for SRM. First, arguments justifying the current non-biopsy approach to SRM are critically reviewed and contested. Second, as a standalone procedure, RMB is critically assessed; RMB was found to have higher sensitivity, specificity, and an equal or lower complication rate when compared with other commonly preoperatively biopsied solid organ tumors (e.g., breast, prostate, lung, pancreas, thyroid, and liver). Based on the foregoing information, we propose a paradigm shift in SRM management, advocating for an updated policy in which partial nephrectomy or nephrectomy for SRM invariably occurs only after a preoperative biopsy confirms that a SRM is indeed malignant. Nature of science is defined as one of the directions of scientific literacy. The main aim of this study was to investigate both secondary school social and science branch post-graduate (non-thesis master) teacher candidates attitudes about the Nature of Science (NOS) and compare their attitudes towards NOS. A 12-item Likert type scale for teacher candidates was used, based on responses of 207 participants. The results indicated that teachers had low positive attitudes towards NOS, but found some significant understanding differences against scaled items between social and science teacher candidates. There was no relationship between the attitudes to the NOS, and the scientific disciplines. (Contains 2 tables.)

An electronic growth mode has been reported to occur in several noble metals on MoS2 but has not been observed on other layered semiconductors. In this work, the experiments show that Au(111) islands initially follow an electronic growth mode on WS2, matching the quantization seen in Au/MoS2. However, while epitaxial nanostructures with similar features are observed on WSe2, there is no sign of electronic growth. Binding energy calculations show that multiple bonding sites have nearly the same energy on both WS2 and MoS2, while Au strongly prefers a single bonding site on WSe2. Having multiple sites with the same energy gives flexibility in interfacial bonding that can alleviate strain from the 9+% lattice mismatch in these systems, which would, otherwise, easily suppress quantum size effects from electronic growth modes. These results should be useful in predicting which systems undergo quantized electronic growth on layered semiconductors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Euroball-IV γ-detector array, equipped with the ancillary charged particle detector array DIAMANT was used to study the residues of the fusion reaction 64Ni ⇒ 128Ba at Ebeam = 255 and 261 MeV, in an attempt to reach the highest anguar momentum and verify the existence of predicted hyperdeformed rotational bands. No discrete hyperdeformed bands were identified, but nevertheless a breakthrough was obtained a systematic search for rotational ridge structure with very large moments of inertia J (2) ≥ 100 ℏ2 MeV(-1), in agreement with theoretical predictions for hyperdeformed shapes. Evidence for hyperdeformiation was obtained by charged particle + γ-ray gating, selectiong triple correlated ridge structures in the continuum of each of the nuclei, 118Te, 124Xe and 124,125Cs. In 7 additional nuclei, rotational ridges were also identified with J(2) = 71-77ℏ2Mev(-1), which most probably correspond to surperdeformed shape. The angular distributions of the emitted charged particles show an excess in forward direction over expectations from pure compound evaporation, which may indicate that in-complete fusion plays an important role in the population of very elongated shapes.

The effect of the decoupled h11/2 orbital on this vibration-to-rotational evolution is demonstrated by an extension of the "E-GOS" prescription to include odd-A nuclei. The experimental results are also compared with self-consistent Total Routhian Surface calculations which also highlight the polarising role of the highly aligned neutron h11/2 orbital in these nuclei.

Near surface defects can significantly impact the quality of metallic interconnects and other interfaces necessary to create device structures incorporating two-dimensional materials. Furthermore, the impact of such defects can strongly depend on their organization. In this study, we present scanning tunneling microscopy images and tunneling spectroscopy of point and linear defects near the surface of natural MoS2. The point defects share similar structural and electronic characteristics and occur with comparable frequency as subsurface sulfur vacancies observed previously on natural MoS2. The linear defects observed here occur less frequently than the point defects but share the same depth profile and electronic structure. These data indicate that the linear defects are actually a one-dimensional organization of subsurface sulfur vacancies. Our density functional calculations agree with this assessment in that, for sufficient local defect concentrations, it is energetically more favorable for the defects to be organized in a linear fashion rather than as clusters or even isolated single point defects. Given these measurements were taken from naturally formed MoS2, this organization likely occurs during crystal formation. Considering the impact of one-dimensional organization on the local properties of layered materials, and the potential for them to be introduced purposefully during crystal formation, research into the formation mechanism and properties of these defects could enable new paths for defect engineering in MoS2-based systems.
