Compelling evidence is presented that Glauber worked as a laborator (laboratory assistant) for Landgrave Georg of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1632/33 till he was appointed apothecary in Giessen in 1635. During this time, he was also used as laborator by the landgrave's personal physician, Helwig Dieterich. Glauber became a famous chemist, whose alchemical secrets were keenly solicited by King Frederik III of Denmark, Queen Christina of Sweden, and, according to the 1662 diary of Ole Borch, King Charles II of England. A 1689 letter to Queen Christina contains detailed descriptions of Glauber's alkahest, his decomposition and redintegration of saltpeter, and his 'most secret sal armoniacum', which is interpreted here for the first time. The so-called 'redintegration experiment' is traditionally at the center of the comments on the supposed Boyle/Spinoza controversy. A. Clericuzio influentially argued (criticizing R.A. & M.B. Hall's interpretation) in his publications that, in De nitro, Boyle accounted for the 'redintegration' of saltpeter on the grounds of the chemical properties of corpuscles and "did not make any attempt to deduce them from mechanical principles". By way of contrast, this paper argues that with his De nitro Boyle wanted to illustrate and promote his new corpuscular or mechanical philosophy, and that he made significant attempts to explain the phenomena in terms of mechanical qualities. Boyle had borrowed the 'redintegration experiment' from R. Glauber and used it in an attempt to demonstrate that his philosophy was superior to the Peripatetic and Paracelsian theory. Consequently, Clericuzio's characterization of the Boyle/Spinoza controversy as a discussion between a strict mechanical philosopher and a chemist is problematic and a wider view of Spinoza's interpretation and its context gives a fairer picture. El propósito del ensayo consiste en un acercamiento entre Glauber Rocha y Jorge Luis Borges. Para tanto, se considerarán las dimensiones críticas y reflexivas de sus respectivas obras, inclusive las artísticas, sobre todo las de Glauber, en el cuadro de la producción de pensamiento en la América Latina y sobre ella, en el siglo veinte, para mostrar la importáncia de los diálogos supranacionales e interartísticos, que en ella ocurren, sobre todo entre el cine y la literatura. En este texto también se identifica la importancia de la (auto)ficción crítica y de la ironía en Rocha, como características que su obra comparte con la de Borges.

Esse artigo tem como proposta analisar a trajetória intelectual de Glauber Rocha, partindo de suas experiências políticas e culturais ao longo dos anos 1970 até se tornar apresentador de televisão. Em sua produção cinematográfica feita no exterior é possível perceber uma aproximação com a linguagem televisiva, numa espécie de preparação inconsciente para atividade que viria desenvolver. Além dos filmes, foram motivo de análise a produção intelectual expressa em livros, jornais e revistas. Em 1979, o cineasta baiano teve uma experiência de apresentador no programa Abertura veiculado pela Rede Tupi de televisão. Apesar de ficar apenas 9 meses no ar, sua participação foi intensa, configurando um dos momentos mais significativos da televisão brasileira da década de 70.

There is a bundle of texts that have become known as the Boyle/Spinoza correspondence, yet Boyle and Spinoza never directly communicated. How did this so-called correspondence start? Why did Boyle invite the philosopher Spinoza to comment on his scientific experiments? How can we interpret the central experiment of the controversy in a modern way? Is there any real controversy between the two philosophers? An analysis of the context, the letters and De Nitro reveals that, according to Boyle at least, Spinoza never really understood what was really at stake in Boyle's important book. Furthermore, I argue, contrary to most commentators, that the philosophers actually had a kind of correspondence based on an implicit agreement regarding their doctrines of the qualities of bodies. And finally, I show that the international network which was important for the understanding of the context as well as for the content of the Boyle/Spinoza correspondence was the Hartlib circle rather than the Royal Society. Abstract: Low energy interaction is considered taking into account the polarization of both particles. The corresponding cross sections are obtained using the Nijmegen nucleon–antinucleon optical potential with shadowing effects taken into account. Double-scattering effects are calculated within the Glauber approach and found to be about . The cross sections are applied to the analysis of the polarization buildup which is due to the interaction of stored antiprotons with a polarized target. It is shown that, at realistic parameters of a storage ring and a target, the filtering mechanism may provide a noticeable polarization in a time comparable with the beam lifetime. The energy dependence of the polarization rate for deuterium target is similar to that for hydrogen one. However, the time of polarization for deuterium is much smaller than that for hydrogen. The new data of the elastic scattering of 6He+12C at about 40 MeV/nucleon are analyzed in the eikonal approximation. The 6He+12C phase-shift function is evaluated completely without any ad hoc assumption by a Monte Carlo integration, which makes it possible to use a realistic 6-nucleon wave function for a halo nucleus 6He. The effect of the breakup of 6He on the elastic differential cross sections as well as the optical potential is studied at different energies from 40 to 800 MeV/nucleon. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
