The development of more thermally stable vanadia-based SCR catalysts for combined end-of-pipe technologies, i.e. selective catalytic reduction catalysts wash-coated on a particulate filter, has been considered in this study. The impact of thermal aging at 850 °C in wet atmosphere has been investigated on bulk W-doped CeVO4 catalysts. Strong detrimental effect on the specific surface area was observed delayed by the presence of tungsten. Aluminium and iron chloride were added to a biological nutrient removal pilot plant (1,500 population equivalent) treating urban wastewater to investigate the control of Microthrix parvicella bulking and foaming by metallic salts. Monitoring plant performance over two 6-month periods showed a slight impact on the removal efficiencies. Addition of metallic salts (Me; aluminium or aluminium + iron) at a concentration of 41 mmol Me(kg MLSS·d) (MLSS: mixed liquor suspended solids) over 70 days allowed a stabilization of the diluted sludge volume index (DSVI), whereas higher dosages (94 mmol Me(kg MLSS·d) over 35 days or 137 mmol Me(kg MLSS·d) over 14 days induced a significant improvement of the settling conditions. Microscopic observations showed a compaction of biological aggregates with an embedding of filamentous bacteria into the flocs that is not specific to M. parvicella as bacteria from phylum Chloroflexi are embedded too. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction targeting M. parvicella further indicated a possible growth limitation in addition to the flocculation impact at the high dosages of metallic salts investigated. This work critically reviews modeling concepts for standard activated sludge wastewater treatment processes (e.g., hydrolysis, growth and decay of organisms, etc.) for some of the most commonly used models. Based on a short overview on the theoretical biochemistry knowledge this review should help model users to better understand (i) the model concepts used; (ii) the differences between models, and (iii) the limits of the models. The seven analyzed models are: (1) ASM1; (2) ASM2d; (3) ASM3; (4) ASM3 + BioP; (5) ASM2d + TUD; (6) Barker & Dold model; and (7) UCTPHO+. Nine standard processes are distinguished and discussed in the present work: hydrolysis; fermentation; ordinary heterotrophic organisms (OHO) growth; autotrophic nitrifying organisms (ANO) growth; OHO & ANO decay; poly-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) storage; polyphosphate (polyP) storage; phosphorus accumulating organisms PAO) growth; and PAO decay. For a structured comparison, a new schematic representation of these processes is proposed. Each process is represented as a reaction with consumed components on the left of the figure and produced components on the right. Standardized icons, based on shapes and color codes, enable the representation of the stoichiometric modeling concepts and kinetics. This representation allows highlighting the conceptual differences of the models, and the level of simplification between the concepts and the theoretical knowledge. Titania-based hydrodesulfurization catalysts were prepared by using a one-pot sol-gel method with the titanium peroxo complex as titanium precursor and molybdenum and cobalt precursors dissolved in the aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution used during synthesis. Catalysts with MoO3 loadings varying from 5 to 40 wt % and a Co/Mo atomic ratio of 0.5 were prepared. Solids with molybdenum loadings below 20 wt % MoO3 demonstrated poor hydrodesulfurization activity for the model compound thiophene. This was attributed to the presence of a large amount of embedded cobalt and molybdenum species in the titania matrix. A significant increase in the catalytic activity was observed for solids containing 20 and 25 wt % of MoO3 on which active species appeared to be accessible on the titania surface. Furthermore, the highest conversion obtained on these sol-gel solids was superior to the highest conversion obtained on reference catalysts prepared through the impregnation of ammonium heptamolybdate and cobalt nitrate on commercial titania. Oxygen transfer in biological wastewater treatment processes with high sludge concentration, such as membrane bioreactor (MBR), is an important issue. The variation of a-factor versus mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration was investigated in a full scale MBR plant under process conditions, using mass balances. Exhaustive data from the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and from additional online sensors (COD, DO, MLSS) were used to calculate the daily oxygen consumption (OC) using a non-steady state mass balance for COD and total N on a 24-h basis. To close the oxygen balance, OC has to match the total oxygen transfer rate (OTRtot) of the system, which is provided by fine bubble (FB) diffusers in the aeration tank and coarse bubbles (CB) in separate membrane tanks. First assessing OTRCB, then closing the balance OC=OTRtot allowed to calculate OTRFB and to fit an exponential relationship between OTRFB and MLSS. A comparison of the a-factor obtained by this balance method and by direct measurements with the off-gas method on the same plant is presented and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims at synthesizing experiences in the practical application of ASM type models. The information is made easily accessible to model users by creating a database of modelling projects. This database includes answers to a questionnaire that was sent out to model users in 2008 to provide inputs for a Scientific and Technical Report of the IWA Task Group on Good Modelling Practice - Guidelines for use of activated sludge models, and a literature review on published modelling projects. The database is analysed to determine which biokinetic model parameters are usually changed by modellers, in which ranges, and what values are typically used for seven selected activated sludge models. These results should help model users in the calibration step, by providing typical parameter values as a starting point and ranges as a guide. However, the proposed values should be used with great care since they are the result of averaging practical experience and not taking into account specific parameter correlations. The first objective of this work was to evaluate the ability of the long-term BOD tests to provide the total biodegradable COD (BCOD) for domestic wastewaters. Results show that the method is repeatable (using two different volume samples, 97 and 164 mL) and that the fractions of BCOD determined were not statistically different from the one obtained by respirometry (at low S/X ratio). Respirometric tests were also repeatable. They were shown to be sensitive to the origin of the sludge. The results obtained are in the range of literature data. But they later indicated that long-term bioassays (>20 days) give higher biodegradable fractions than the other methods (BOD and respirometry). The second objective was to compare soluble fractions obtained with raw and pre-flocculated samples. Flocculated filtered COD is significantly lower than filtered COD, even if a pore size of 0.1 mm is used. The comparison to literature values shows that physicochemical RBCOD fractions are significantly higher than the ones obtained using bioassays. Comparison with the fractions used in calibrated models would help the choice of the more suitable method for modelling purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quality of simulation results can be significantly affected by errors in the published model (typing, inconsistencies, gaps or conceptual errors) and/or in the underlying numerical model description. Seven of the most commonly used activated sludge models have been investigated to point out the typing errors, inconsistencies and gaps in the model publications: ASM1; ASM2d; ASM3; ASM3+ Bio-P; ASM2d+ TUD; New General; UCTPHO+. A systematic approach to verify models by tracking typing errors and inconsistencies in model development and software implementation is proposed. Then, stoichiometry and kinetic rate expressions are checked for each model and the errors found are reported in detail. An attached spreadsheet (see http://www.iwaponline.com/wst/06104/0898.pdf) provides corrected matrices with the calculations of all stoichiometric coefficients for the discussed biokinetic models and gives an example of proper continuity checks. The Good Modelling Practice Task Group (GMP-TG) of the International Water Association (IWA) is developing guidelines for the use of Activated Sludge Models (ASM). As part of this work the group created and sent out a questionnaire to current and potential activated sludge model users in 2007. The objectives of the questionnaire were (i) to better define the profile of ASM users, (ii) to identify the tools and procedures that are actually used and (iii) to highlight the main limitations while building and using ASM-type models. Ninety-six answers were received from all over the world, from several types of organisation. The results were analysed to identify the modellers' perceptions of models depending on their profile. The results also highlighted the main topics of interest for improving modelling procedures which are standardisation of the available modelling guidelines and better experience and knowledge transfer. This paper serves as a problem statement of the issues surrounding uncertainty in wastewater treatment modelling. The paper proposes a structure for identifying the sources of uncertainty introduced during each step of an engineering project concerned with model-based design or optimisation of a wastewater treatment system. It briefly references the methods currently used to evaluate prediction accuracy and uncertainty and discusses the relevance of uncertainty evaluations in model applications. The paper aims to raise awareness and initiate a comprehensive discussion among professionals on model prediction accuracy and uncertainty issues. It also aims to identify future research needs. Ultimately the goal of such a discussion would be to generate transparent and objective methods of explicitly evaluating the reliability of model results, before they are implemented in an engineering decision-making context. The present study aims at optimising the nitrification and denitrification phases at intermittently aerated process (activated sludge) removing nitrogen from municipal wastewater. The nitrogen removal performance recorded at 22 intermittently aerated plants was compared to the results obtained from the simulations given by the widely used ASM1. It is shown that simulations with a single value for the heterotrophic yield with any electron acceptor over-predict the nitrate concentration in the effluent of treatment plants. The reduction of this coefficient by 20% for anoxic conditions reduces the nitrate concentration by 10 g N·m-3. It significantly improves the accuracy of the predictions of nitrate concentrations in treated effluents compare to real data. Simulations with dual values (aerobic and anoxic conditions) for heterotrophic yield (modified ASM1) were then used to determine the practical daily aerobic time interval to meet a given nitrogen discharge objective. Finally, to support design decisions, the relevance of a pre-denitrification configuration in front of an intermittently aerated tank was studied. It is shown that when the load of BOD5 is below the conventional design value, a small contribution of the anoxic zone to nitrate removal occurs, except for over-aerated plants. When plants receive a higher load of BOD5, the modified ASM1 suggests that the anoxic zone has a higher contribution to nitrogen removal, for both correctly and over-aerated plants. The objective of this work was to analyse the impact of different geometric and operating parameters on the alpha factor value for fine bubble aeration systems equipped with EPDM membrane diffusers. Measurements have been performed on nitrifying plants operating under extended aeration and treating mainly domestic wastewater. Measurements performed on 14 nitrifying plants showed that, for domestic wastewater treatment under very low F/M ratios, the alpha factor is comprised between 0.44 and 0.98. A new composite variable (the Equivalent Contact Time, ECT) has been defined and makes it possible for a given aeration tank, knowing the MCRT, the clean water oxygen transfer coefficient and the supplied air flow rate, to predict the alpha factor value. Increasing energy demands combined with local scarcities and rising prices make the valorisation of energy from domestic wastewater seen as a valuable resource. Chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) enables an increased redirection of organic compounds into sludge in the primary stage of a wastewater treatment for a transformation into biogas (carbon capture). Traditionally used coagulants consist of metallic salts, but in the last two decades, the development of polymers, based on petroleum or synthesized from renewable sources such as plants, has been intensified. However, a direct comparison of the effectiveness of these products is missing. In this paper, we analysed data of peer-reviewed research from jar tests to full-scale studies, highlighting key parameters for successful carbon capture. More than 100 studies were identified, with a majority presenting results from tests under static conditions (jar tests), while data on full-scale applications are scarce. Overall, for TSS and COD, a clear correlation between inflow concentration and removal efficiency was found, irrespective of the product used. Comparison between the effectiveness of the different types of products is difficult, but bio-based coagulants need to be generally added in higher product concentrations for a considerable removal efficiency. While CEPT seems to increase the general sludge and biogas output, future studies should focus on harmonising laboratory analysis to make results comparable. This review compiles information on sidestream characteristics that result from anaerobic digestion dewatering (conventional and preceded by a thermal hydrolysis process), biological and primary sludge thickening. The objective is to define a range of concentrations for the different characteristics found in literature and to confront them with the optimal operating conditions of sidestream processes for nutrient treatment or recovery. Each characteristic of sidestream (TSS, VSS, COD, N, P, Al 3+ , Ca 2+ , Cl - , Fe 2+/3+ , Mg 2+ , K + , Na + , SO 4 2- , heavy metals, micro-pollutants and pathogens) is discussed according to the water resource recovery facility configuration, wastewater characteristics and implications for the recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus based on current published knowledge on the processes implemented at full-scale. The thorough analysis of sidestream characteristics shows that anaerobic digestion sidestreams have the highest ammonium content compared to biological and primary sludge sidestreams. Phosphate content in anaerobic digestion sidestreams depends on the type of applied phosphorus treatment but is also highly dependent on precipitation reactions within the digester. Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) mainly impacts COD, N and alkalinity content in anaerobic digestion sidestreams. Surprisingly, the concentration of phosphate is not higher compared to conventional anaerobic digestion, thus offering more attractive recovery possibilities upstream of the digester rather than in sidestreams. All sidestream processes investigated in the present study (struvite, partial nitrification/anammox, ammonia stripping, membranes, bioelectrochemical system, electrodialysis, ion exchange system and algae production) suffer from residual TSS in sidestreams. Above a certain threshold, residual COD and ions can also deteriorate the performance of the process or the purity of the final nutrient-based product. In response to the growing global resource scarcity, wastewater is increasingly seen as a valuable resource to recover and valorise for the benefit of the society rather than another waste that needs treatment before disposal. Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) oxidise most of the organic matter present in wastewater, instead of recovering it as a feedstock for biomaterials or to produce energy in the form of biogas. In contrast, an A-Stage is capable of producing a concentrated stream of organic matter ready for valorisation, ideally suited to retrofit existing large plants. This technology is based on the principle of high-rate activated sludge process that favours biosorption and storage over oxidation. In this paper, we summarize peer-reviewed research of both pilot-scale and full-scale studies of A-Stage process under real conditions, highlighting key operational parameters. In the majority of published studies, the sludge retention time (SRT) was identified as a key operational parameter. An optimal SRT of 0.3 days seems to maximize the redirection of influent COD - up to 50% to the sludge flux, while simultaneously keeping mineralization under 25% of total influent COD. Other key optimal parameters are a hydraulic residence time of 30 min and dissolved oxygen levels of 0.5 mg⋅L - 1 . In addition, nutrient removal efficiencies of 15-27% for total nitrogen and 13-38% for total phosphorus are observed. Influence of mixing on settling efficiencies remain largely underexplored, as well as impact of wet weather flow and temperature on overall recovery efficiencies, which hinders to provide recommendations on these aspects. Evolution of modelling efforts of A-Stage process are also critically reviewed. The role of extracellular polymeric substances remain unclear and measures differ greatly according to the different studies and protocols. Better understanding the settling processes by adding Limit of Stokesian and Threshold of Flocculation measures to Sludge Volume Index could help to reach a better understanding of the A-Stage process. Mobile group II introns are site-specific retrotransposable elements abundant in bacterial and organellar genomes. They are composed of a large and highly structured ribozyme and an intron-encoded reverse transcriptase that binds tightly to its intron to yield a ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particle. During the first stage of the mobility pathway, the intron RNA catalyses its own insertion directly into the DNA target site. Recognition of the proper target rests primarily on multiple base-pairing interactions between the intron RNA and the target DNA, while the protein makes contacts with only a few target positions by yet-unidentified mechanisms. Using a combination of comparative sequence analyses and in vivo mobility assays we demonstrate the existence of a new base-pairing interaction named EBS2a-IBS2a between the intron RNA and its DNA target site. This pairing adopts a Watson-Crick geometry and is essential for intron mobility, most probably by driving unwinding of the DNA duplex. Importantly, formation of EBS2a-IBS2a also requires the reverse transcriptase enzyme which stabilizes the pairing in a non-sequence-specific manner. In addition to bringing to light a new structural device that allows subgroup IIB1 and IIB2 introns to invade their targets with high efficiency and specificity our work has important implications for the biotechnological applications of group II introns in bacterial gene targeting., (© The Author(s) 2021. Gas-liquid mass transfer in wastewater treatment processes has received considerable attention over the last decades from both academia and industry. Indeed, improvements in modelling gas-liquid mass transfer can bring huge benefits in terms of reaction rates, plant energy expenditure, acid-base equilibria and greenhouse gas emissions. Despite these efforts, there is still no universally valid correlation between the design and operating parameters of a wastewater treatment plant and the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficients. That is why the current practice for oxygen mass transfer modelling is to apply overly simplified models, which come with multiple assumptions that are not valid for most applications. To deal with these complexities, correction factors were introduced over time. The most uncertain of them is the α-factor. To build fundamental gas-liquid mass transfer knowledge more advanced modelling paradigms have been applied more recently. Yet these come with a high level of complexity making them impractical for rapid process design and optimisation in an industrial setting. However, the knowledge gained from these more advanced models can help in improving the way the α-factor and thus gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient should be applied. That is why the presented work aims at clarifying the current state-of-the-art in gas-liquid mass transfer modelling of oxygen and other gases, but also to direct academic research efforts towards the needs of the industrial practitioners.

Nitrifying biologically active filters (BAFs) have been found to be high emitters of nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a powerful greenhouse gas contributing to ozone layer depletion. While recent models have greatly improved our understanding of the triggers of N 2 O emissions from suspended-growth processes, less is known about N 2 O emissions from full-scale biofilm processes. Tertiary nitrifying BAFs have been modeled at some occasions but considering strong simplifications on the description of gas-liquid exchanges which are not appropriate for N 2 O prediction. In this work, a tertiary nitrifying BAF model including the main N 2 O biological pathways was developed and confronted to full-scale data from Seine Aval, the largest wastewater resource recovery facility in Europe. A mass balance on the gaseous compounds was included in order to correctly describe the N 2 O gas-liquid partition, thus N 2 O emissions. Preliminary modifications of the model structure were made to include the gas phase as a compartment of the model, which significantly affected the prediction of nitrification. In particular, considering gas hold-up influenced the prediction of the hydraulic retention time, thus nitrification performances: a 3.5% gas fraction reduced ammonium removal by 13%, as the liquid volume, small in such systems, is highly sensitive to the gas presence. Ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) are main effectors of messenger RNA (mRNA) decoding, peptide-bond formation, and ribosome dynamics during translation. Ribose 2'-O-methylation (2'-O-Me) is the most abundant rRNA chemical modification, and displays a complex pattern in rRNA. 2'-O-Me was shown to be essential for accurate and efficient protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells. However, whether rRNA 2'-O-Me is an adjustable feature of the human ribosome and a means of regulating ribosome function remains to be determined. Here we challenged rRNA 2'-O-Me globally by inhibiting the rRNA methyl-transferase fibrillarin in human cells. Using RiboMethSeq, a nonbiased quantitative mapping of 2'-O-Me, we identified a repertoire of 2'-O-Me sites subjected to variation and demonstrate that functional domains of ribosomes are targets of 2'-O-Me plasticity. Using the cricket paralysis virus internal ribosome entry site element, coupled to in vitro translation, we show that the intrinsic capability of ribosomes to translate mRNAs is modulated through a 2'-O-Me pattern and not by nonribosomal actors of the translational machinery. Aeration is an essential component of aerobic biological wastewater treatment and is the largest energy consumer at most water resource recovery facilities. Most modelling studies neglect the inherent complexity of the aeration systems used. Typically, the blowers, air piping, and diffusers are not modelled in detail, completely mixed reactors in a series are used to represent plug-flow reactors, and empirical correlations are used to describe the impact of operating conditions on bubble formation and transport, and oxygen transfer from the bubbles to the bulk liquid. However, the mechanisms involved are very complex in nature and require significant research efforts. This contribution highlights why and where there is a need for more detail in the different aspects of the aeration system and compiles recent efforts to develop physical models of the entire aeration system (blower, valves, air piping and diffusers), as well as adding rigour to the oxygen transfer efficiency modelling (impact of viscosity, bubble size distribution, shear and hydrodynamics). As a result of these model extensions, more realistic predictions of dissolved oxygen profiles and energy consumption have been achieved. Finally, the current needs for further model development are highlighted.

A full-scale nitrifying biofilter was continuously monitored during two measurement periods (September 2014; February 2015) during which both gaseous and liquid N2O fluxes were monitored on-line. The results showed diurnal and seasonal variations of N2O emissions. A statistical model was run to determine the main operational parameters governing N2O emissions. Modification of the distribution between the gas phase and the liquid phase was observed related to the effects of temperature and aeration flow on the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa). With similar nitrification performance values, the N2O emission factor was twice as high during the winter campaign. In this study, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from a full-scale denitrifying biofilter plant were continuously monitored over two periods (summer campaign in September 2014 and winter campaign in February 2015). Results of the summer campaign showed that the major part (>99%) of N2O flux was found in the liquid phase and was discharged with the effluent. N2O emissions were highly variable and represented in average 1.28±1.99% and 0.22±0.31% of the nitrate uptake rate during summer and winter campaigns, respectively. Denitrification was able to consume a large amount of dissolved N2O coming from the upstream nitrification stage. In the absence of methanol injection failure and with an influent BOD/NO3-N ratio higher than 3, average reduction of N2O was estimated to be of 93%. Increasingly stringent effluent limits and an expanding scope of model system boundaries beyond activated sludge has led to new modelling objectives and consequently to new and often more detailed modelling concepts. Nearly three decades after the publication of Activated Sludge Model No1 (ASM1), the authors believe it is time to re-evaluate wastewater characterisation procedures and targets. The present position paper gives a brief overview of state-of-the-art methods and discusses newly developed measurement techniques on a conceptual level. Potential future paths are presented including on-line instrumentation, promising measuring techniques, and mathematical solutions to fractionation problems. This is accompanied by a discussion on standardisation needs to increase modelling efficiency in our industry.

The Activated Sludge Model number 1 (ASM1) is the main model used in simulation projects focusing on nitrogen removal. Recent laboratory-scale studies have found that the default values given 20 years ago for the decay rate of nitrifiers and for the heterotrophic biomass yield in anoxic conditions were inadequate. To verify the relevance of the revised parameter values at full scale, a series of simulations were carried out with ASM1 using the original and updated set of parameters at 20 degrees C and 10 degrees C. The simulation results were compared with data collected at 13 full-scale nitrifying-denitrifying municipal treatment plants. This work shows that simulations using the original ASM1 default parameters tend to overpredict the nitrification rate and underpredict the denitrification rate. The updated set of parameters allows more realistic predictions over a wide range of operating conditions.

The objective of this paper is to compare the following four methods of measuring oxygen transfer in wastewater treatment plants under process conditions: the offgas, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), reaeration, and in situ oxygen uptake rate (OUR) methods. Comparative tests were performed under controlled conditions in a pilot column and in six full-scale oxidation ditches equipped with fine-bubble diffusers and slow-speed mixers. The offgas and H2O2 methods give similar results (differences between the oxygen-transfer coefficients under field conditions [k(L)a(f)] from each method lower than 10%). The reaeration procedure gives more random results (differences from -5 to -43% compared with values obtained using the offgas method). The in situ OUR method, in the presence of a horizontal flow of mixed liquor, leads to an estimate of k(L)a(f) to within 15% of the offgas value.

This note presents and compares two models to predict the equilibrium temperature in aerated basins. They differ by their degree of complexity and therefore by the input data they require. Both models were able to estimate the temperature of an industrial aerated lagoon, the more complex model giving, in addition, a complete breakdown of the heat exchanges.

At the first symptoms of organisation of the silkgland in the embryo, mitoses stop and nuclei start to grow. Through autoradiographic studies, performed after sequenced labeling with [3H] and [14C] thymidine, the durations of the different phases of DNA synthesis cycles (T = 42 to 48 h, S = 22 to 25 h, G = 20 to 23 h) are established. These durations are in fact identical during the second and the third instar, and the same, whatever region is concerned : posterior, middle or anterior parts. A model has been established to account for the distribution of the S phases during the second and third instars. The DNA synthesis in all nuclei of a given region has been followed during the first four instars by labelling with [3H]thymidine. The activity goes through maxima and minima, depending on the percent of nuclei synthesizing DNA and their synchronism, both being characteristic of each region; long resting periods are observed during the molting stages of the first three instars in the middle and the anterior parts. The coincidence is obvious between the maxima and minima and respectively the S and G phases of the model. DNA assays agree with the distribution of cycles established by autoradiography if one admits that each cycle does lead to a doubling of the amount of DNA. The overall DNA synthesis from the diploid value is estimated to correspond to 18-19 endomitoic cycles in the nucleic of the posterior part, 19-20 cycles of those of the middle part and 13 in those of the anterior part. The analysis of chromosome structures, by squashing the nuclear content, shows that existence of a complete endomitotic cycle: the doubling of chromosomes is associated with condensed structures, alternating with a decondensed state of chromatin, responsible for the DNA synthesis. The female heterochromatin undergoes a restricted morphological cycle delayed with respect to bulk chromatin. It is characterized by a late DNA duplication and by non dispersed daughter chromosomes. Some of these aspects are, to a lesser extent, reproduced in groups of autosomic chromosomes.
