Developing and testing decadal-scale predictions of soil response to climate change is difficult because there are few long-term warming experiments or other direct observations of temperature response. As a result, spatial variation in temperature is often used to characterize the influence of temperature on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks under current and warmer temperatures. This approach assumes that the decadal-scale response of SOC to warming is similar to the relationship between temperature and SOC stocks across sites that are at quasi steady state; however, this assumption is poorly tested. We developed four variants of a Reaction-network-based model of soil organic matter and microbes using measured SOC stocks from a 4,000-km latitudinal transect. Each variant reflects different assumptions about the temperature sensitivities of microbial activity and mineral sorption. All four model variants predicted the same response of SOC to temperature at steady state, but different projections of transient warming responses. The relative importance of Qmax, mean annual temperature, and net primary production, assessed using a machine-learning algorithm, changed depending on warming duration. When mineral sorption was temperature sensitive, the predicted average change in SOC after 100 years of 5 °C warming was −18% if warming decreased sorption or +9% if warming increased sorption. When microbial activity was temperature sensitive but mineral sorption was not, average site-level SOC loss was 5%. We conclude that spatial climate gradients of SOC stocks are insufficient to constrain the transient response; measurements that distinguish process controls and/or observations from long-term warming experiments, especially mineral fractions, are needed.

Soils contain more carbon than plants or the atmosphere, and sensitivities of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks to changing climate and plant productivity are a major uncertainty in global carbon cycle projections. Despite a consensus that microbial degradation and mineral stabilization processes control SOC cycling, no systematic synthesis of long-term warming and litter addition experiments has been used to test process-based microbe-mineral SOC models. We explored SOC responses to warming and increased carbon inputs using a synthesis of 147 field manipulation experiments and five SOC models with different representations of microbial and mineral processes. Model projections diverged but encompassed a similar range of variability as the experimental results. Experimental measurements were insufficient to eliminate or validate individual model outcomes. While all models projected that CO2 efflux would increase and SOC stocks would decline under warming, nearly one-third of experiments observed decreases in CO2 flux and nearly half of experiments observed increases in SOC stocks under warming. Long-term measurements of C inputs to soil and their changes under warming are needed to reconcile modeled and observed patterns. Measurements separating the responses of mineral-protected and unprotected SOC fractions in manipulation experiments are needed to address key uncertainties in microbial degradation and mineral stabilization mechanisms. Integrating models with experimental design will allow targeting of these uncertainties and help to reconcile divergence among models to produce more confident projections of SOC responses to global changes.

We present a numerical method for solving a class of systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) that arises in modeling environmental processes undergoing advection and biogeochemical reactions. The salient feature of these PDEs is that all partial derivatives appear in linear expressions. As a result, the system can be viewed as a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), albeit each one along a different characteristic. The method then consists of alternating between equations and integrating each one step-wise along its own characteristic, thus creating a customized grid on which solutions are computed. Since the solutions of such PDEs are generally smoother along their characteristics, the method offers the potential of using larger time steps while maintaining accuracy and reducing numerical dispersion. The advantages in efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated in two illustrative examples that simulate depth-resolved reactive transport and soil carbon cycling.

Soil carbon (C) is a critical component of Earth system models (ESMs), and its diverse representations are a major source of the large spread across models in the terrestrial C sink from the third to fifth assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Improving soil C projections is of a high priority for Earth system modeling in the future IPCC and other assessments. To achieve this goal, we suggest that (1) model structures should reflect real-world processes, (2) parameters should be calibrated to match model outputs with observations, and (3) external forcing variables should accurately prescribe the environmental conditions that soils experience. First, most soil C cycle models simulate C input from litter production and C release through decomposition. The latter process has traditionally been represented by first-order decay functions, regulated primarily by temperature, moisture, litter quality, and soil texture. While this formulation well captures macroscopic soil organic C (SOC) dynamics, better understanding is needed of their underlying mechanisms as related to microbial processes, depth-dependent environmental controls, and other processes that strongly affect soil C dynamics. Second, incomplete use of observations in model parameterization is a major cause of bias in soil C projections from ESMs. Optimal parameter calibration with both pool- and flux-based data sets through data assimilation is among the highest priorities for near-term research to reduce biases among ESMs. Third, external variables are represented inconsistently among ESMs, leading to differences in modeled soil C dynamics. We recommend the implementation of traceability analyses to identify how external variables and model parameterizations influence SOC dynamics in different ESMs. Overall, projections of the terrestrial C sink can be substantially improved when reliable data sets are available to select the most representative model structure, constrain parameters, and prescribe forcing fields.

Microbes influence soil organic matter decomposition and the long-term stabilization of carbon (C) in soils. We contend that by revising the representation of microbial processes and their interactions with the physicochemical soil environment, Earth system models (ESMs) will make more realistic global C cycle projections. Explicit representation of microbial processes presents considerable challenges due to the scale at which these processes occur. Thus, applying microbial theory in ESMs requires a framework to link micro-scale process-level understanding and measurements to macro-scale models used to make decadal- to century-long projections. Here we review the diversity, advantages, and pitfalls of simulating soil biogeochemical cycles using microbial-explicit modeling approaches. We present a roadmap for how to begin building, applying, and evaluating reliable microbial-explicit model formulations that can be applied in ESMs. Drawing from experience with traditional decomposition models, we suggest the following: (1) guidelines for common model parameters and output that can facilitate future model intercomparisons; (2) development of benchmarking and model-data integration frameworks that can be used to effectively guide, inform, and evaluate model parameterizations with data from well-curated repositories; and (3) the application of scaling methods to integrate microbial-explicit soil biogeochemistry modules within ESMs. With contributions across scientific disciplines, we feel this roadmap can advance our fundamental understanding of soil biogeochemical dynamics and more realistically project likely soil C response to environmental change at global scales.

To better understand sources of uncertainty in projections of terrestrial carbon cycle feedbacks, we present an approach to separate the controls on modeled carbon changes. We separate carbon changes into four categories using a linearized, equilibrium approach: those arising from changed inputs (productivity-driven changes), and outputs (turnover-driven changes), of both the live and dead carbon pools. Using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) simulations for five models, we find that changes to the live pools are primarily explained by productivity-driven changes, with only one model showing large compensating changes to live carbon turnover times. For dead carbon pools, the situation is more complex as all models predict a large reduction in turnover times in response to increases in productivity. This response arises from the common representation of a broad spectrum of decomposition turnover times via a multi-pool approach, in which flux-weighted turnover times are faster than mass-weighted turnover times. This leads to a shift in the distribution of carbon among dead pools in response to changes in inputs, and therefore a transient but long-lived reduction in turnover times. Since this behavior, a reduction in inferred turnover times resulting from an increase in inputs, is superficially similar to priming processes, but occurring without the mechanisms responsible for priming, we call the phenomenon "false priming", and show that it masks much of the intrinsic changes to dead carbon turnover times as a result of changing climate. These patterns hold across the fully coupled, biogeochemically coupled, and radiatively coupled 1 % yr-1 increasing CO2 experiments. We disaggregate inter-model uncertainty in the globally integrated equilibrium carbon responses to initial turnover times, initial productivity, fractional changes in turnover, and fractional changes in productivity. For both the live and dead carbon pools, inter-model spread in carbon changes arising from initial conditions is dominated by model disagreement on turnover times, whereas inter-model spread in carbon changes from fractional changes to these terms is dominated by model disagreement on changes to productivity in response to both warming and CO2 fertilization. However, the lack of changing turnover time control on carbon responses, for both live and dead carbon pools, in response to the imposed forcings may arise from a common lack of process representation behind changing turnover times (e.g., allocation and mortality for live carbon; permafrost, microbial dynamics, and mineral stabilization for dead carbon), rather than a true estimate of the importance of these processes.

We introduce and study a new search-type problem with (n + 1)-robots on a disk. The searchers (robots) all start from the center of the disk, have unit speed, and can communicate wirelessly. The goal is for a distinguished robot (the queen) to reach and evacuate from an exit that is hidden on the perimeter of the disk in as little time as possible. The remaining n robots (servants) are there to facilitate the queen's objective and are not required to reach the hidden exit. We provide upper and lower bounds for the time required to evacuate the queen from a unit disk. Namely, we propose an algorithm specifying the trajectories of the robots which guarantees evacuation of the queen in time always better than 2 + 4 (2 − 1) π n for n ≥ 4 servants. Organic semiconductors are a promising platform for ambient polaritonics. Several applications, such as polariton routers, and many-body condensed matter phenomena are currently hindered due to the ultra-short polariton lifetimes in organics. Here, we employ a single-shot dispersion imaging technique, using 4 ns long non-resonant excitation pulses, to study polariton lasing in a λ / 2 planar organic microcavity filled with BODIPY-Br dye molecules. At a power threshold density of 1.5 MW / cm 2 , we observe the transition to a quasi-steady state, 1.2 ns long-lived, single-mode polariton lasing and the concomitant superlinear increase in photoluminescence, spectral line-narrowing, and energy blueshift. Rapid excited-state quenching in the solid state is a widespread limitation for organic chromophores. Even when molecules are dispersed in neutral host matrices, photoluminescence quantum yields decrease sharply with increased concentration, pointing to efficient intermolecular non-radiative decay pathways that remain poorly understood. Here we study the nature of the intermolecular states formed in dispersions of the prototypical BODIPY dyes. Using temperature-dependent and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, we describe the processes of energy transfer into excimer states and, in materials with suitable chemical structure, excitonically coupled dimers. Introduction The aims of the project were to intervene early on admission, by taking a collateral history for patients with confusion; to improve the quality and detail of collateral history being taken to better establish certain clinically important specks of information. These include triggers for delirium, the patient's baseline cognition, any patterns in the change of a patient's cognition to help determine if a patient was displaying aspects of a certain type of dementia prior to admission, baseline mobility and housing situation, baseline continence, history of substance misuse and alcohol etc. Ultimately, this project aims to identify next of kin from which collateral history can be obtained, but also to establish a firm communication platform to facilitate future discussions on behalf of patients undergoing delirium. This will ultimately, improve care but also making sure family members are involved early on in admission, exploring their ideas, concerns, and expectations. Methods We created a collateral history template booklet that was introduced to a geriatric ward. Specific parameters were set and measured, pre-intervention and post-intervention. A second round of post-intervention data collection was performed with an improved collateral history sheet outlook. We measured the outcome of 22 collateral histories for each round. Results We found that in both rounds, post intervention, there was an improved outcome compared to pre-intervention in almost all the parameters that were measured. For example, in 100% of the collateral histories there was documentation of the patient's baseline concentrations and attention, issues with orientation, issues with expressive and receptive dysphasia and the main concerns of the next of kin, any problems with executive functioning and the baseline functional status of the patients. Conclusion The collateral history, both improved the overall quality and the quantity of the information gathered in patients with confusion and, contributed to a structured management. In 2007, serological evidence for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) infection was found as a result of differential diagnostic testing of Cypriot sheep suspected to be infected with bluetongue or contagious ecthyma. Seropositive sheep and goats were subsequently uncovered on ten geographically clustered flocks, while cattle and pigs in neighbouring herds were all seronegative. These antibodies were specific for serotype-O FMD virus, reacting with both structural and non-structural (NS) FMD viral proteins. However, no FMD virus could be recovered from the seropositive flocks. FMD had not been recorded in Cyprus since 1964 and there has been no vaccination programme since 1984. Since all the seropositive animals were at least 3 years old and home-bred, it was concluded that infection had occurred approximately 3 years previously had passed un-noticed and died out spontaneously. It therefore appears that antibodies to FMD virus NS proteins can still be detected around 3 years after infection of small ruminants, but that virus carriers cannot be detected at this time. This unusual situation of finding evidence of historical infection in a FMD-free country caused considerable disruption and alarm and posed questions about the definition of what constitutes a FMD outbreak. Abstract: We estimated the prevalence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infected sheep and goats, older than 2 years, reared in the region effectively controlled by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, in September 2005. The sera collected from 8011 animals (3429 sheep and 4582 goats) from 83 flocks, non-vaccinated against MAP, were examined for antibodies with a commercially available enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Pourquier® paratuberculosis antibody screening ELISA). The true prevalence of MAP infection was calculated, in a Bayesian framework, separately in sheep and goats, with models that adjusted for the misclassification of animals because of the imperfect accuracy of the ELISA. The within-flock mean seroprevalence in sheep and goats was 9.9% (95% CI: 8.9; 10.9%) and 7.9% (7.2; 8.7%), respectively. There was at least one seropositive sheep in 52% (38; 66%) of flocks with sheep and one seropositive goat in 50% (39; 62%) of flocks with goats. Within the seropositive flocks the mean seroprevalence was 12.1% (10.9; 13.4%) and 10.3% (9.3; 11.4%) in sheep and goats, respectively. The calculated mean true prevalence of infected sheep and goats was 15.0 and 11.1%, respectively. There was at least one infected sheep in 60.8% (95% credible interval: 42.3; 78.8%) and at least an infected goat in 48.6% (30.4; 68.5%) of the flocks. In the infected flocks, the mean within flock true prevalence of infection in sheep and goats was estimated at 24.6% (16.3; 33.3%) and 23.1% (15.5; 33.6%), respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) affects the fate and storage of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems, but its global importance remains uncertain. Accurately modeling and predicting CUE on a global scale is challenging due to inconsistencies in measurement techniques and the complex interactions of climatic, edaphic, and biological factors across scales. The link between microbial CUE and soil organic carbon relies on the stabilization of microbial necromass within soil aggregates or its association with minerals, necessitating an integration of microbial and stabilization processes in modeling approaches. In this perspective, we propose a comprehensive framework that integrates diverse data sources, ranging from genomic information to traditional soil carbon assessments, to refine carbon cycle models by incorporating variations in CUE, thereby enhancing our understanding of the microbial contribution to carbon cycling., (© 2024. Molecular vibrations that bear information about intrinsic properties of chemical compounds are challenging to detect at submonolayer densities. Surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy has been proven to be a viable approach to enhance and detect weak vibration signals. Here, we report a SEIRA sensor based on mid-infrared surface plasmon resonances supported by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Due to the 1D nature of SWCNTs, their plasmon modes are highly polarized with the electromagnetic fields spatially confined to nanometer scales. Leveraging these characteristics of SWCNTs, we observe a polarization selective coupling between their surface plasmons and vibrational modes of chemical bonds introduced onto their surfaces. A maximum modulation of ∼15% to the plasmon resonance peak is obtained for a submonolayer chemical group coverage. These findings suggest that SWCNTs may potentially serve as a highly sensitive SEIRA platform for revealing intricate information about molecular compositions and bond orientations.

Rats can condition cephalic-phase insulin responses (CPIRs) to specific sounds or times of the day that predict food availability. The present study asked whether mice can condition a CPIR to the flavor of sapid solutions that produce postoral glucose stimulation. To this end, we subjected C57BL/6 mice to one of six experimental protocols. We varied both the duration of the five training sessions (i.e., 23 h or 1 h) and the nature of the training solution. In Experiment 1, consumption of a 0.61% saccharin solution was paired with IG co-infusion of a 16% glucose solution. In Experiments 2-6, the mice consumed a training solution containing a mixture of 0.61% saccharin + 16% glucose, 32% sucrose, 32% maltodextrin, flavored 32% maltodextrin, or 16% maltodextrin. We subsequently asked whether consumption of any of these fluids conditioned a CPIR to a test solution that produced a similar flavor, but which did not elicit a CPIR in naïve mice. The mice did condition a CPIR, but only to the solutions containing 32% maltodextrin. We attribute this conditioning to postoral actions of the concentrated maltodextrin solutions.

It has recently been proposed that the study of microbial dynamics in humans may gain insights from island biogeographical theory. Here, we test whether the diversity of the intratumoral microbiota of colorectal cancer tumors (CRC) follows a power law with tumor size akin to the island species-area relationship. We confirm a direct correlation between the quantity of Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs) within CRC tumors and tumor sizes, following a (log)power model, explaining 47% of the variation. Background: Stress during the early ERCP learning curve may interfere with acquisition of skills during training. The purpose of this study was to compare stress biomarkers in the saliva of trainees before and after familiarisation with ERCP exercises on a virtual simulator., Methods: Altogether 26 endoscopists under training, 14 women and 12 men, completed the three phases of this study: Phase 1. Three different ERCP procedures were performed on the simulator. Saliva for α-amylase (sAA), Chromogranin A (sCgA), and Cortisol (sC) were collected before (baseline), halfway through the exercise (ex.), and 10 min after completion of the exercise (comp.); Phase 2. A three-week familiarisation period where at least 30 different cases were performed on the virtual ERCP simulator; and Phase 3. Identical to Phase 1 where saliva samples were once again collected at baseline, during, and after the exercise. Percentage differences in biomarker levels between baseline and exercise (Diff ex ) and between baseline and completion (Diff comp ) during Phase 1 and Phase 3 were calculated for each stress marker., Results: Mean % changes, Diff ex and Diff comp , were significantly positive ( p  < 0.05) for all markers in both Phase 1 and Phase 3. Diff ex in Phase 1 was significantly greater than Diff ex in Phase 3 ( p  < 0.05) for sAA and sCgA. Diff comp for sAA in Phase 1 was significantly greater than Diff comp in Phase 3 ( p  < 0.05). No significant differences were found in sC concentration between Phases 1 and 3., Conclusion: This study shows that familiarisation with the ERCP simulator greatly reduced stress as measured by the three saliva stress biomarkers used with sAA being the best. Strong light-matter interactions have attracted much attention as a means to control the physical/chemical properties of organic semiconducting materials with light-matter hybrids called polaritons. To unveil the processes under strong coupling, studies on the dynamics of polaritons are of particular importance. While highly condensed molecular materials with large dipole density are ideal to achieve strong coupling, the emission properties of such films often become a mixture of monomeric and excimeric components, making the role of excimers unclear. Here, we use amorphous neat films of a new bis(phenylethynyl anthracene) derivative showing only excimer emission and investigate the excited-state dynamics of a series of strongly coupled microcavities, with each cavity being characterised by a different exciton-photon detuning. A time-resolved photoluminescence study shows that the excimer radiatively pumps the lower polariton in the relaxation process and the decay profile reflects the density of states. The delayed emission derived from triplet-triplet annihilation is not sensitive to the cavity environment, possibly due to the rapid excimer formation. Our results highlight the importance of controlling intermolecular interactions towards rational design of organic exciton-polariton devices, whose performance depends on efficient polariton relaxation pathways.

One of the largest uncertainties in the terrestrial carbon cycle is the timing and magnitude of soil organic carbon (SOC) response to climate and vegetation change. This uncertainty prevents models from adequately capturing SOC dynamics and challenges the assessment of management and climate change effects on soils. Reducing these uncertainties requires simultaneous investigation of factors controlling the amount (SOC abundance) and duration (SOC persistence) of stored C. We present a global synthesis of SOC and radiocarbon profiles (n Profile  = 597) to assess the timescales of SOC storage. We use a combination of statistical and depth-resolved compartment models to explore key factors controlling the relationships between SOC abundance and persistence across pedo-climatic regions and with soil depth. This allows us to better understand (i) how SOC abundance and persistence covary across pedo-climatic regions and (ii) how the depth dependence of SOC dynamics relates to climatic and mineralogical controls on SOC abundance and persistence. We show that SOC abundance and persistence are differently related; the controls on these relationships differ substantially between major pedo-climatic regions and soil depth. For example, large amounts of persistent SOC can reflect climatic constraints on soils (e.g., in tundra/polar regions) or mineral absorption, reflected in slower decomposition and vertical transport rates. In contrast, lower SOC abundance can be found with lower SOC persistence (e.g., in highly weathered tropical soils) or higher SOC persistence (e.g., in drier and less productive regions). We relate variable patterns of SOC abundance and persistence to differences in the processes constraining plant C input, microbial decomposition, vertical C transport and mineral SOC stabilization potential. This process-oriented grouping of SOC abundance and persistence provides a valuable benchmark for global C models, highlighting that pedo-climatic boundary conditions are crucial for predicting the effects of climate change and soil management on future C abundance and persistence., (© 2024 The Authors. Malnutrition is a major issue in gastrointestinal perioperative situations, as only 40% of malnourished patients are finally treated. This literature review investigates the inconsistencies regarding the diagnostic approach to both preoperative and postoperative patients and the various underlying causes, as well as the efficiency of the various therapeutic regimens. A literature search was conducted until August 2023 in MEDLINE and Scopus. Clinical studies involving perioperative nutritional assessment in adult gastrointestinal surgery patients during the last 10 years were included in the present review. Finally, 19 articles were included in the study. Preoperative nutritional therapy is increasingly recognized as a key component of surgical care. Malnourished patients who are hospitalized and operated on, have significantly worse clinical results. Gastrointestinal postoperative malnutrition coexists with metabolic stress, as patients usually suffer from minor chronic inflammations; therefore, postoperative malnutrition is the result of a combination of the effects of inflammation and a lack of food intake. Postoperative malnutrition leads to prolonged hospitalizations and hospital complications and therefore the need to treat it is essential. There are many recognized tools for detecting malnutrition. However, all tools showed inconsistent results regarding their validity. Per os feeding after surgery, and dietary supplements when necessary, have been recommended.
