Abstract

BackgroundThe collection of self-reported physical activity using validated questionnaires has known bias and measurement error. ObjectiveAccelerometry, an objective measure of daily activity, increases the rigor and accuracy of physical activity measurements. Here, we describe the methodology and related protocols for accelerometry data collection and quality assurance using the Actigraph GT9X accelerometer data collection in a convenience sample of ovarian cancer survivors enrolled in GOG/NRG 0225, a 24-month randomized controlled trial of diet and physical activity intervention versus attention control. MethodsFrom July 2015 to December 2019, accelerometers were mailed on 1337 separate occasions to 580 study participants to wear at 4 time points (baseline, 6, 12, and 24 months) for 7 consecutive days. Study staff contacted participants via telephone to confirm their availability to wear the accelerometers and reviewed instructions and procedures regarding the return of the accelerometers and assisted with any technology concerns. ResultsWe evaluated factors associated with wear compliance, including activity tracking, use of a mobile app, and demographic characteristics with chi-square tests and logistic regression. Compliant data, defined as ≥4 consecutive days with ≥10 hours daily wear time, exceeded 90% at all study time points. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Low diet quality, diabetes, and chronic inflammation are risk factors of liver cancer and chronic liver disease (CLD), but the extent to which insulinemic and inflammatory diets are independently associated with risk of liver cancer and CLD mortality is unknown. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort analysis among 78,356 postmenopausal women in the Womens Health Initiative Observational Study. Two validated dietary indices, the empirical dietary index for hyperinsulinemia (EDIH) and the empirical dietary inflammation pattern (EDIP), were estimated from a food-frequency questionnaire. Incident cases of liver cancer and CLD mortality were adjudicated via review of medical records and linkage to National Death Index. Multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for age, diabetes, body mass index, and other covariates. RESULTS: During a median 22.1 y of follow-up, we documented 176 primary liver cancer cases and 156 CLD mortality cases. EDIH was positively associated with incident liver cancer (HRQuartile 4 vs. Quartile 1 = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.00, 2.83; P-trend = 0.05) and CLD mortality (HRQ4 vs. Q1 = 2.28; 95% CI: 1.25, 4.15; P-trend = 0.02) in the multivariable model. EDIP was also positively associated with liver cancer (HRQ4 vs. Q1 = 1.88; 95% CI: 1.17, 3.03; P-trend = 0.009) and CLD mortality (HRQ4 vs. Q1 = 1.85; 95% CI: 1.09, 3.15; P-trend = 0.007). Estimates remained significant and robust in sensitivity analyses. Further analyses indicated positive associations for refined grains, processed meat, sugary beverages, and eggs, and inverse associations for coffee/tea and poultry. CONCLUSIONS: Dietary insulinemic and inflammatory potentials were independently associated with higher risk of liver cancer and CLD mortality in U.S. postmenopausal women. These findings suggest a potential role for diet modification to reduce risk of liver cancer and CLD.

13. Two Decades of Computing at the University of Belize

Abstract

Computer science became a distinct academic discipline in the early 1950s. The first computer science degree program was founded in Belize around 45 years later, under the auspices of the nascent University College of Belize, which would subsequently become the University of Belize. We present a twenty-year synopsis of a degree program created in 1998 to build an undergraduate curriculum using the surge of computing in the country of Belize as a catalyst coupled with the recognition of the importance of computing for national development. The four-year undergraduate degree program has resulted in steady student enrolment over the past two decades featuring a female student population consistent with female enrolment in similar computer science programs globally. The study details the origins, development efforts, successes, challenges, and recommendations for the program's future development.

22. 'Dichos' & Diabetes: Literary Devices Used by Mexican-Origin Males to Share Their Perspectives on Type 2 Diabetes and Health

Abstract

The medical literature emphasizes the increasing role of cultural considerations for improved health education among Latinos. Research in Latino culture reveal the inherent function of figurative language devices, such as "dichos," in individual expression and cultural norm transmission. Increased understanding of "dichos" may provide unique insight into the dynamic relationship between collective cultural knowledge and individual health perceptions. "Dichos" related to health and diabetes among Latinos, however, remain entirely unexplored. The present study represents a secondary qualitative analysis of the perspectives on diabetes and health of Mexican-origin males that identified inadequate understanding of disease processes and cultural customs as barriers to health. Spanish language transcriptions from the original study were content analyzed by two Latino researchers fluent in English and Spanish to identify the use of "dichos" by the participants to convey their perspectives on health and diabetes. The results reveal four major categorizations of "dichos:" religiosity, familism, formation, and individuality. Findings from this study provide insight on the utility of "dichos" for the identification of health-related perspectives. "Dichos" may also serve clinicians and health educators as culturally relevant vehicles of communication for encouraging and transformative health discussions. Future diabetes interventions should incorporate "dichos" to explore quantifiable outcomes of culturally tailored programs.

Education Workforce Housing in California: Developing the 21st Century Campus, a new report and companion handbook from cityLAB, Center for Cities + Schools, and the Terner Center for Housing Innovation, provides a comprehensive overview of the potential for land owned by school districts to be designed and developed for teachers and other employees.Developed in collaboration with the California School Boards Association (CSBA) and funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), this research inventories tens of thousands of potential sites, shows a range of housing design strategies, and lays out a roadmap for school districts interested in exploring this transformative opportunity to enable more teachers and staff to live in the communities that they serve.The report also makes important recommendations for state policy reforms to encourage education workforce housing. The report is accompanied by an illustrated Handbook that provides a how-to guide for school boards, administrators, and community members to advocate for and advance the development of education workforce housing on underutilized schools lands in communities across California.
