Neutrophils and eosinophils are known to be key players in COPD. Recently, neutrophil extracellular trap cell death (NETosis), a mechanism due to decondensation and extrusion of chromatin to form extracellular traps, has been demonstrated in COPD. However, there is limited knowledge about eosinophil extracellular trap cell death (EETosis) and its role in the pathogenesis of COPD. The aim of this study was to evaluate EETosis in stable COPD. Induced sputum obtained from healthy smokers and low exacerbation risk COPD A or B group patients or high exacerbation risk COPD C or D group patients were included. Samples were examined using electron microscopy and immunofluorescence. Healthy smokers (n=10) and COPD A (n=19) group exhibited neutrophilic or paucigranulocytic phenotypes, with NETosis being absent in these patients. In contrast, COPD B (n=29), with eosinophilic or mixed phenotypes, showed EETosis and incipient NETosis. COPD C (n=18) and COPD D groups (n=13) were differentiated from low exacerbation rate-COPD group by the abundant cellular debris, with COPD C group having an eosinophilic pattern and numerous cells undergoing EETosis. A hallmark of this group was the abundant released membranes that often appeared phagocytosed by neutrophils, which coincidentally exhibited early NETosis changes. The COPD D group included patients with a neutrophilic or mixed pattern, with abundant neutrophil extracellular trap-derived material. This study is the first to demonstrate EETosis at different stages of stable COPD. The results suggest a role for eosinophils in COPD pathophysiology, especially at the beginning and during the persistence of the disease, regardless of whether the patient quit smoking, with EETosis debris probably triggering uncontrolled NETosis. Abstract

A series of organotin heterocycles of general formula [{Me2C(C6H3CH2)2O}SnR2] [R = methyl (Me, 4), n‐butyl (n‐Bu, 5), benzyl (Bn, 6) and phenyl (Ph, 7)] was easily synthesized by a Barbier‐type reaction assisted by the sonochemical activation of metallic magnesium. The 119Sn{1H} NMR data for all four compounds confirm the presence of a central Sn atom in a four‐coordinated environment in solution. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction studies for 17,17‐dimethyl‐7,7‐diphenyl‐15‐oxa‐7‐stannatetracyclo[11.3.1.05,16.09,14]heptadeca‐1,3,5(16),9(14),10,12‐hexaene, [Sn(C6H5)2(C17H16O)], 7, at 100 and 295 K confirmed the formation of a mononuclear eight‐membered heterocycle, with a conformation depicted as boat–chair, resulting in a weak Sn...O interaction. The Sn and O atoms are surrounded by hydrophobic C—H bonds. A Hirshfeld surface analysis of 7 showed that the eight‐membered heterocycles are linked by weak C—H...π, π–π and H...H noncovalent interactions. The pairwise interaction energies showed that the cohesion between the heterocycles are mainly due to dispersion forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two series of dinuclear organotin macroheterocycles of general formula [R2Sn{Ch(C6H4CH2)2}2SnR2] [Ch = O with R = n-Bu (2a), Bn (3a), Ph (4a) and Ch = S with R = n-Bu (2b), Bn (3b), Ph (4b)] were easily synthetized by a Barbier-type reaction assisted by sonochemical activation of metallic magnesium. The 119Sn{1H} NMR data for all compounds and the X-ray single-crystal diffraction studies for 2a and 4a confirmed the presence of a central Sn atom in a four-coordinate environment. The molecular structures of 2a and 4a showed puckered 16-membered macroheterocycles. The tin and oxygen atoms are in the interior of the cavity of the macrocycle, surrounded by hydrophobic C–H bonds. A Hirshfeld surface analyses of 2a and 4a showed that the macrocycles are linked by weak C–H···π, C···C, and H···H non-covalent interactions. The pairwise interaction energies showed that the cohesion between the macrocycles are mainly due to dispersion forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The central nervous system (CNS) is one of the most frequent metastatic sites of various cancers, including lung cancer, breast cancer and melanoma. The development of brain metastases requires a specific therapeutic approach and is associated with high mortality and morbidity in cancer patients. Advances in precision medicine and the introduction in recent years of new drugs, such as immunotherapy, have made it possible to improve the prognosis of these patients by improving survival and quality of life. New diagnostic techniques such as liquid biopsy allow real-time monitoring of tumor evolution, providing molecular information on prognostic and predictive biomarkers of response to treatment in blood or other fluids. In this review, we perform an exhaustive update of the clinical trials that demonstrate the utility of immunotherapy in patients with brain metastases and the potential of circulating biomarkers to improving the results of efficacy and toxicity in this subgroup of patients. Abstract

Xylotrechus arvicola is an invasive insect on Vitis vinifera in the main wine-producing regions of the Iberian Peninsula. X. arvicola larvae bore into the grapevine wood and make galleries, which cause structural damages to the plant. The aim of this study was to investigate how grapevine wood infested by larvae affects the mechanical properties of the plant in comparation with those of uninfested wood. Samples of grapevine wood uninfested and infested by larvae were collected from vineyards. Compression and flexural strengths as well as simulated structures of grapevine wood in field, in relation to harvest weight by variety, were used to quantify the wood mechanical properties. Infested wood endured a lower strength and normal tension, and exhibited a reduction in the structural capacities in the simulation of harvest weight of 'Cabernet-Sauvignon' variety (up to 62.0%). 'Tempranillo' (despite its high mechanical slenderness values) and 'Cabernet-Sauvignon', were the varieties that showed a higher resistance on trunks and branches, respectively. A lower bending moment was observed on the infested branches of all varieties. Changes in the mechanical properties of infested wood suggest a decrease in mechanical resistance of wood attacked by larvae that could contribute to the rupture of the infested grapevine over time. Grapevine wood attacked by X. arvicola larvae could be more sensitive to mechanical external factors in vineyards such as strong winds, harvest weight and vibration exerted by harvesting machines. 41. Reconcilement of VHE γ -ray/X-ray correlation studies in Mrk 421 and break-down at high fluxes.

Abstract

Multiwavelength campaigns have been carried out to study the correlation between the very high-energy (VHE) γ-ray and the X-ray emissions in blazars but no conclusive results have been achieved yet. In this paper, we add Milagro data to the existing VHE γ-ray data from HEGRA-CT1 and Whipple and test the consistency and robustness of the reported correlation between VHE γ-ray and X-ray fluxes in Mrk 421. We found that on a monthly time-scale the correlation is robust, consistent between instruments, and described as a linear function. Furthermore, most of the fluxes on shorter time-scales are consistent with the correlation within 3σ A even, where σ A is an estimated intrinsic scatter. However, a break-down of the correlation becomes clearly evident at high states of activity with fluxes |$\rm \gtrsim \! 2.5\times 10^{-10}\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}$| at energies above 400 GeV independently of the time-scale, observational period, or instrument; even for single flares, the X-ray and VHE γ-ray emissions lie on the correlation until the VHE γ-ray flux reaches values higher than the one mentioned above. We have interpreted our results within the one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. We found that describing a single and unique γ-ray/X-ray correlation strongly narrows the range of possible values of the magnetic field B when a constant value of the spectral index along the correlation is assumed. Abstract

Background: Many researchers have pointed out the strong relationship between maternal psychological well-being and fetal welfare during pregnancy. The impact of music interventions during pregnancy should be examined in depth, as they could have an impact on stress reduction, not only during pregnancy but also during the course of delivery, and furthermore induce fetal awareness.Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of music on maternal anxiety, before and after a non-stress test (NST), and the effect of music on the birthing process.Material and Method: The four hundred and nine pregnant women coming for routine prenatal care were randomized in the third trimester to receive either music (n = 204) or no music (n = 205) stimulation during an NST. The primary outcome was considered as the maternal state anxiety score before and after the NST, and the secondary outcome was the birthing process.Results: Before their NST, full-term pregnant women who had received music intervention were found to have a similar state-trait anxiety score to those from the control group, with 38.10 ± 8.8 and 38.08 ± 8.2, respectively (p = .97). After the NST, the mean state-trait anxiety score of each group was recorded, with results of 30.58 ± 13.2 for those with music intervention, and 43.11 ± 15.0 for those without music intervention (p < .001). In the control group, the NST was followed by a statistically significant increase in the state-trait anxiety score (38.08 ± 8.2 versus 43.11 ± 15.0, p < .001). However, listening to music during the NST resulted in a statistically significant decrease in the state-trait anxiety score of the study group (38.10 ± 8.8 versus 30.58 ± 13.2, OR = 0.87, p < .001). Furthermore, the first stage of labor was shorter in women who received music stimulation (OR = 0.92, p < .004). They also presented a more natural delivery beginning (spontaneous) and less medication (stimulated and induced) than those who were not stimulated musically, with statistically significant differences (p < .01).Conclusions: Prenatal music intervention could be a useful and effective tool to reduce anxiety in full-term pregnant women during an NST and improve the delivery process by reducing the first stage of labor in nulliparous women. Abstract

This paper studies the impact of voltage source converter (VSC) losses on the solution of the optimal power flow (OPF) of hybrid AC/DC systems with a multi-terminal configuration. The motivation of this analysis is that the expected development of high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems will entail an increase of the number of converter stations, and consequently, converter losses might not be negligible when compared with conventional transmission losses of AC and DC lines. Towards this end, an extended OPF model is proposed considering a combination of VSC based multi-terminal HVDC grids (VSC-MTDC) and AC systems. The OPF model represents converter losses according to the state-of-the art modeling where different expressions are used when the converter functions as an inverter or as a rectifier. Three simpler alternative approaches are also implemented and the obtained OPF solutions are assessed. In order to compare the OPF solutions, a comparison metric is proposed. Obtained results show that modeling the converter losses in a simplified way could lead to very different power flow solutions, especially for the DC branches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Previous studies showed development of daptomycin non-susceptibility (DNS: MIC >4 mg/L) in Enterococcus faecalis infections. However, no studies have assessed the efficacy of the combination of daptomycin/ampicillin against E. faecalis strains developing DNS in the experimental endocarditis (EE) model.Objectives: To assess the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of daptomycin at 10 mg/kg/day, daptomycin/ampicillin and ampicillin/ceftriaxone against two high-level aminoglycoside-resistant E. faecalis strains, one developing DNS after in vitro exposure to daptomycin and another that did not (DS).Methods: Subculture of 82 E. faecalis strains from patients with endocarditis with daptomycin MICs, time-kill and in vivo experiments using the EE model.Results: 33% of the strains (27 of 82) displayed DNS after subculture with daptomycin. Daptomycin MIC rose from 0.5-2 to 8-16 mg/L. In time-kill experiments, when using a high inoculum (10 8 cfu/mL), daptomycin/ampicillin was synergistic for one-third of DS strains and none of DNS strains, while ampicillin/ceftriaxone retained synergy in all cases. In the EE model, daptomycin did not significantly reduce cfu/g from vegetations compared with control against either strain, while daptomycin/ampicillin reduced significantly more cfu/g than daptomycin against the DS strain, but not against the DNS strain [2.9 (2.0-4.1) versus 6.1 (4.5-8.0); P  =   0.002]. Ampicillin/ceftriaxone was synergistic and bactericidal against both strains, displaying the same activity as daptomycin/ampicillin against the DS strain.Conclusions: Performance of an Etest for daptomycin MIC after subculture with daptomycin inhibitory doses on strains of high-level aminoglycoside-resistant E. faecalis endocarditis may be an easy test to predict the in vivo efficacy of daptomycin/ampicillin. Abstract

We present far-infrared (FIR) 70-500?μm imaging observations obtained with Herschel/Photodetector Array Camera (PACS) and Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) of 33 nearby (median distance of 30 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies from the Revised Shapley-Ames (RSA) catalogue. We obtain the FIR nuclear (r = 1?kpc and r = 2?kpc) and integrated spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We estimate the unresolved nuclear emission at 70?μm and we fit the nuclear and integrated FIR SEDs with a grey body model. We find that the integrated FIR emission of the RSA Seyferts in our sample is dominated by emission from the host galaxy, with dust properties similar to those of normal galaxies (non-AGN). We use four criteria to select galaxies whose nuclear 70?μm emission has a significant AGN contribution: (1) elevated 70/160?μm flux ratios, (2) spatially resolved, high dust temperature gradient, (3) 70?μm excess emission with respect to the fit of the FIR SEDs with a grey body, and (4) excess of nuclear SFR obtained from 70?μm over SFR from mid-infrared indicators. 16 galaxies (48 per cent of the initial sample) satisfy at least one of these conditions, whereas 10 satisfy half or more. After careful examination of these, we select six bona fide candidates (18 per cent of the initial sample) and estimate that ~40-70 per cent of their nuclear (r = 1-2?kpc) 70?μm emission is contributed by dust heated by the AGN.
