We study the role of the size distribution of the banking sector for bailout policy and financial fragility in a model of financial intermediation with limited commitment and noisy sunspots. In particular, due to the different costs of mitigating depositors' losses, differences in financial fragility arise endogenously in the sense that the large banking market admits a higher degree of instability. Moreover, the desire to reduce differences in the amount of bailout funding across segments of the banking system leads the fiscal authority to collect less taxes ex‐ante but ends up rendering the scope for run equilibria larger. Objectives: To observe the therapeutic efficacy of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) combined with different pharmacological treatments for adenomyosis. Materials and methods: A total of 126 patients with adenomyosis who underwent HIFU combined with pharmacological treatment were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were treated with either dienogest (DNG) (Group A, N = 38) or GnRH-a (Group B, N = 88) for three months after HIFU, and received levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine systems (LNG-IUS) at the end of the third month. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Pictorial Blood Loss Assessment Chart (PBAC) scores were used for evaluating symptom improvement. Results: After propensity score matching (1:2), 38 patients were included in Group A and 76 in Group B. All patients showed significant improvement in VAS and PBAC scores after HIFU, but the PBAC score of Group A was significantly higher than that of patients in Group B at 18 months [11.50 (1.00, 29.50) vs. 0.00 (0.00, 16.50), p < 0.01] and 24 months [4.00 (0.25, 27.75) vs. 0.00 (0.00, 12.75), p = 0.04] after HIFU. Furthermore, patients in Group B had a greater uterine volume reduction at 24 months after HIFU than that of patients in Group A [51.00 (27.00, 62.00) vs. 30.00 (17.00, 42.75, p = 0.02)]. However, the adverse effects in Group A were lower than those in Group B [7 (15.79) vs. 35 (46.05), p < 0.01]. No significant difference was observed in the recurrence rate between the two groups. Since the first SARS‐CoV‐2 outbreak in late 2019, the SARS‐CoV‐2 genome has harbored multiple mutations, especially spike protein mutations. The currently fast‐spreading Omicron variant that manifests without symptoms or with upper respiratory diseases has been recognized as a serious global public health problem. However, its pathological mechanism is largely unknown. In this work, rhesus macaques, hamsters, and BALB/C mice were employed as animal models to explore the pathogenesis of Omicron (B.1.1.529). Notably, Omicron (B.1.1.529) infected the nasal turbinates, tracheae, bronchi, and lungs of hamsters and BALB/C mice with higher viral loads than in those of rhesus macaques. Severe histopathological damage and inflammatory responses were observed in the lungs of Omicron (B.1.1.529)‐infected animals. In addition, viral replication was found in multiple extrapulmonary organs. Results indicated that hamsters and BALB/c mice are potential animal models for studies on the development of drugs/vaccines and therapies for Omicron (B.1.1.529). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the resolution of remote sensing images, especially aerial images, has become higher and higher, and the spans of time and space have become larger and larger. The phenomenon in which one class of objects can produce several kinds of spectra may lead to more errors in detection methods that are based on spectra. For different convolution methods, downsampling can provide some advanced information, which will lead to rough detail extraction; too deep of a network will greatly increase the complexity and calculation time of a model. To solve these problems, a multifunctional feature extraction model called MSNet (multifunctional feature-sharing network) is proposed, which is improved on two levels: depth feature extraction and feature fusion. Firstly, a residual shuffle reorganization branch is proposed; secondly, linear index upsampling with different levels is proposed; finally, the proposed edge feature attention module allows the recovery of detailed features. The combination of the edge feature attention module and linear index upsampling can not only provide benefits in learning detailed information, but can also ensure the accuracy of deep feature extraction. Background and Purpose: Recent evidence shows that the fractional motion (FM) model may be a more appropriate model for describing the complex diffusion process of water in brain tissue and has shown to be beneficial in clinical applications of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the FM model averaged the anomalous diffusion parameter values, which omitted the impacts of anisotropy. This study aimed to investigate the potential feasibility of anisotropy of anomalous diffusion using the FM model for distinguishing and grading AD patients. Methods: Twenty-four patients with AD and 11 matched healthy controls were recruited, diffusion MRI was obtained from all participants and analyzed using the FM model. Generalized fractional anisotropy (gFA), an anisotropy metric, was introduced and the gFA values of FM-related parameters, Noah exponent (α) and the Hurst exponent (H), were calculated and compared between the healthy group and AD group and between the mild AD group and moderate AD group. The receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and the multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to assess the diagnostic performances of the anisotropy values and the directionally averaged values. Results: The gFA(α) and gFA(H) values of the moderate AD group were higher than those of the mild AD group in left hippocampus. The gFA(α) value of the moderate AD group was significantly higher than that of the healthy control group in both the left and right hippocampus. The gFA(ADC) values of the moderate AD group were significantly lower than those of the mild AD group and healthy control group in the right hippocampus. Compared with the gFA(α), gFA(H), α, and H , the ROC analysis showed larger areas under the curves for combination of α + gFA(α) and the combination of H + gFA(H) in differentiating the mild AD and moderate AD groups, and larger area under the curves for combination of α + gFA(α) in differentiating the healthy controls and AD groups. Conclusion: The anisotropy of anomalous diffusion could significantly differentiate and grade patients with AD, and the diagnostic performance was improved when the anisotropy metric was combined with commonly used directionally averaged values. Most diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) techniques use the mono-exponential model to describe the diffusion process of water in the brain. However, the observed dMRI signal decay curve deviates from the mono-exponential form. To solve this problem, the fractional motion (FM) model has been developed, which is regarded as a more appropriate model for describing the complex diffusion process in brain tissue. It is still unclear in the identification and classification of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients using the FM model. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential feasibility of FM model for differentiating AD patients from healthy controls and grading patients with AD. Twenty-four patients with AD and 11 healthy controls were included. The left and right hippocampus were selected as regions of interest (ROIs). The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values and FM-related parameters, including the Noah exponent (α), the Hurst exponent (H), and the memory parameter (μ = H −1/ α), were calculated and compared between AD patients and healthy controls and between mild AD and moderate AD patients using a two-sample t -test. The correlations between FM-related parameters α, H , μ, and ADC values and the cognitive functions assessed by mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) scales were investigated using Pearson partial correlation analysis in patients with AD. The receiver-operating characteristic analysis was used to assess the differential performance. We found that the FM-related parameter α could be used to distinguish AD patients from healthy controls (P < 0.05) with greater sensitivity and specificity (left ROI, 0.917 and 0.636; right ROI, 0.917 and 0.727) and grade AD patients (P < 0.05) showed higher sensitivity and specificity (right ROI, 0.917, 0.75). The α was found to be positively correlated with MMSE (P < 0.05) and MoCA (P < 0.05) scores in patients with AD, indicating that the α values in the bilateral hippocampus were a potential MRI-based biomarker of disease severity in AD patients. Background: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is a high risk for Alzheimer's disease. The physiological mechanisms of SCD is largely unknown. Most of the existing studies made their observations during the resting state of the brain. How the SCD group performs differently from the normal controls (NC) during functional tasks is less studied. This study compared the responses of SCD and NC evoked by loaded working memory tasks. The results of this study help clarify the underlying hemodynamic mechanisms of SCD. Methods: 15 NC (8 females) and 23 SCD subjects (14 females) participated in the study. Table 1 shows the biographical and behavioral data of the two groups. All subjects participated block‐designed 0‐back, 1‐back, 2‐back and 3‐back working memory tasks. Followed by the N‐back tasks, each subject underwent a hypercapnic challenge during which the subject breathed a gas mixture (5% CO2, 20% O2, 75%N2) through a non‐rebreather mask. A pulse sequence which simultaneously acquires cerebral blood volume (CBV), cerebral blood flow (CBF), blood oxygen‐level dependent (BOLD)‐weighted signals was implemented on a 3.0 T GE MR750 system. At the group level, holding sex, age and education as covariates, a general linear model was applied to compare the above parameters between the two groups, and a partial correlation test was performed to relate the imaging results with the behavior data. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The group averages of δCBV, δCBF, δBOLD and δCMRO2 evoked by 1‐, 2‐ and 3‐back, with respect to 0‐back, in the frontal cortex were displayed in Figure 1. In general, all parameters show a load‐dependent effect, where 1‐back caused minimum signal changes. Among all parameters, δCBF evoked by 3‐back, with respect to 0‐back, was significantly lower (p = 0.04) in the SCD group compared to the NC group. None of the other parameters showed statistical differences between the two groups. In addition, δCBF at 3‐back was found to be significantly correlated with the MoCA (p = 0.04) and AFT (p 0.03) scores of the subjects. Whether the cerebellum is involved in voluntary motor learning or motor performance is the subject of a new debate. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined cerebellar activation in eight volunteers before and after an extended period of training. Activation volume on both sides of cerebellum after learning was significantly reduced compared to that before learning even under the same motor frequency. Remarkably, while motor frequency for the training sequence was significantly higher than the control sequence after 41 d of learning, activation in the cerebellum for both sequences, with respect to activation loci and volumes, was very similar. These results suggest that the cerebellum was involved in motor learning but not motor performance. Changes of cerebellar activation from training thus appear to be associated with learning but not with improvement on task performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gastrointestinal (GI) infection is evidenced with involvement in COVID-19 pathogenesis caused by SARS-CoV-2. However, the correlation between GI microbiota and the distinct pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 Proto and its emerging variants remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to determine if GI microbiota impacted COVID-19 pathogenesis and if the effect varied between SARS-CoV-2 Proto and its variants. We performed an integrative analysis of histopathology, microbiomics, and transcriptomics on the GI tract fragments from rhesus monkeys infected with SARS-CoV-2 proto or its variants. Based on the degree of pathological damage and microbiota profile in the GI tract, five of SARS-CoV-2 strains were classified into two distinct clusters, namely, the clusters of Alpha, Beta and Delta (ABD), and Proto and Omicron (PO). Notably, the abundance of potentially pathogenic microorganisms increased in ABD but not in the PO-infected rhesus monkeys. Specifically, the high abundance of UCG-002 , UCG-005 , and Treponema in ABD virus-infected animals positively correlated with interleukin, integrins, and antiviral genes. Overall, this study revealed that infection-induced alteration of GI microbiota and metabolites could increase the systemic burdens of inflammation or pathological injury in infected animals, especially in those infected with ABD viruses. Distinct GI microbiota and metabolite profiles may be responsible for the differential pathological phenotypes of PO and ABD virus-infected animals. These findings improve our understanding the roles of the GI microbiota in SARS-CoV-2 infection and provide important information for the precise prevention, control, and treatment of COVID-19.

Diabetes-aggravated myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MI/R) injury remains an urgent medical issue, and the molecular mechanisms involved with diabetes and MI/R injury remain largely unknown. Previous studies have shown that inflammation and P2X7 signaling participate in the pathogenesis of the heart under individual conditions. It remains to be explored if P2X7 signaling is exacerbated or alleviated under double insults. We established a high-fat diet and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mouse model, and we compared the differences in immune cell infiltration and P2X7 expression between diabetic and nondiabetic mice after 24 h of reperfusion. The antagonist and agonist of P2X7 were administered before and after MI/R. Our study showed that the MI/R injury of diabetic mice was characterized by increased infarct area, impaired ventricular contractility, more apoptosis, aggravated immune cell infiltration, and overactive P2X7 signaling compared with nondiabetic mice. The major trigger of increased P2X7 was the MI/R-induced recruitment of monocytes and macrophages, and diabetes can be a synergistic factor in this process. Administration of P2X7 agonist eliminated the differences in MI/R injury between nondiabetic mice and diabetic mice. Both 2 wk of brilliant blue G injection before MI/R and acutely administered A438079 at the time of MI/R injury attenuated the role of diabetes in exacerbating MI/R injury, as evidenced by decreased infarct size, improved cardiac function, and inhibition of apoptosis. Additionally, brilliant blue G blockade decreased the heart rate after MI/R, which was accompanied by downregulation of tyrosine hydroxylase expression and nerve growth factor transcription. Background: There is growing evidence about the effect of bilateral superior cervical sympathectomy on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Studies have increasingly found that the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) plays a protective role in myocardial I/R injury. However, the precise mechanism is unknown. The present study explored the bilateral superior cervical sympathectomy's effect and potential mechanism in mice myocardial I/R injury., Methods: The left heart I/R injury model was created by ligating the anterior descending branch of the coronary artery for 30 min followed by reperfusion. Bilateral superior cervical sympathectomy was performed before myocardial I/R injury. To evaluate the effect of bilateral superior cervical sympathectomy on the myocardium, we examined the myocardial infarct size and cardiac function. Then, myocardial apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress were detected on the myocardium. Furthermore, the expression of STAT3 signal in myocardial tissue was measured by western blotting. To further examine the cardioprotective effect of STAT3 after bilateral superior cervical sympathectomy, the STAT3 inhibitor (static) was utilized to inhibit the phosphorylation of STAT3., Results: The results showed that the myocardial I/R injury decreased and the cardiac function recovered in the myocardial I/R injury after cervical sympathectomy. Meanwhile, cervical sympathectomy reduced the myocardial distribution of the sympathetic marker tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and systemic sympathetic tone. And levels of oxidative stress, inflammatory markers, and apoptosis were reduced in myocardial tissue. We also found that the STAT3 signal was activated in myocardial tissue after cervical sympathectomy. STAT3 inhibitor can partially reverse the myocardial protective effect of cervical sympathectomy., Conclusion: Bilateral superior cervical sympathectomy significantly alleviated myocardial I/R injury in mice. Contemporary models of episodic memory posit that remembering involves the reenactment of encoding processes. Although encoding-retrieval similarity has been consistently reported and linked to memory success, the nature of neural pattern reinstatement is poorly understood. Using high-resolution fMRI on human subjects, our results obtained clear evidence for item-specific pattern reinstatement in the frontoparietal cortex, even when the encoding-retrieval pairs shared no perceptual similarity. No item-specific pattern reinstatement was found in the ventral visual cortex. Importantly, the brain regions and voxels carrying item-specific representation differed significantly between encoding and retrieval, and the item specificity for encoding-retrieval similarity was smaller than that for encoding or retrieval, suggesting different nature of representations between encoding and retrieval. Moreover, cross-region representational similarity analysis suggests that the encoded representation in the ventral visual cortex was reinstated in the frontoparietal cortex during retrieval. Together, these results suggest that, in addition to reinstatement of the originally encoded pattern in the brain regions that perform encoding processes, retrieval may also involve the reinstatement of a transformed representation of the encoded information. These results emphasize the constructive nature of memory retrieval that helps to serve important adaptive functions. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Episodic memory enables humans to vividly reexperience past events, yet how this is achieved at the neural level is barely understood. A long-standing hypothesis posits that memory retrieval involves the faithful reinstatement of encoding-related activity. We tested this hypothesis by comparing the neural representations during encoding and retrieval. We found strong pattern reinstatement in the frontoparietal cortex, but not in the ventral visual cortex, that represents visual details. Critically, even within the same brain regions, the nature of representation during retrieval was qualitatively different from that during encoding.
