Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are one of the most severe disasters in alpine regions, releasing a large amount of water and sediment that can cause fatalities and economic loss as well as substantial damage to downstream infrastructures. The risk of GLOFs in the Himalayas is exacerbated by glacier retreat caused by global warming. Critical economic corridors, such as the Rongxer Watershed, are threatened by GLOFs, but the lack of risk assessment specific to the watershed hinders hazard prevention. In this study, we propose a novel model to evaluate the risk of GLOF using a combination of remote sensing observations, GIS, and hydrological models and apply this model to the GLOF risk assessment in the Rongxer Watershed. The results show that (1) the area of glacial lakes in the Rongxer Watershed increased by 31.19% from 11.35 km2 in 1990 to 14.89 km2 in 2020, and (2) 18 lakes were identified as potentially dangerous glacial lakes (PDGLs) that need to be assessed for the GLOF risk, and two of them were categorized as very high risk (Niangzongmajue and Tsho Rolpa). The proposed model was robust in a GLOF risk evaluation by historical GLOFs in the Himalayas. Mineral dust aerosol concentrations in the atmosphere varied greatly on glacial–interglacial timescales. The greatest changes in global dust activity occurred in response to changes in orbital parameters (which affect dust emission intensity through glacial activity) and the lifetime of dust in the atmosphere (caused by changes in the global hydrological cycle). Long-term changes in the surface dust deposition rate are registered in geological archives such as loess, peats, lakes, marine sediments, and ice. Data provided by these archives are crucial for guiding simulations of dust and for better understanding the natural global dust cycle. However, the methods employed to derive paleo-dust deposition rates differ markedly between archives and are subject to different sources of uncertainty. Here, we present Paleo ± Dust, an updated compilation of bulk and <10 µ m paleo-dust deposition rates with quantitative 1σ uncertainties that are inter-comparable among archive types. Paleo ± Dust incorporates a total of 285 pre-industrial Holocene (pi-HOL) and 209 Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) dust flux constraints from studies published until December 2022, including, for the first time, peat records. We also recalculate previously published dust fluxes to exclude data from the last deglaciation and thus obtain more representative constraints for the last pre-industrial interglacial and glacial end-member climate states. Based on Paleo ± Dust, the global LGM:pi -HOL ratio of <10 µ m dust deposition rates is 3.1 ± 0.7 (1σ). We expect Paleo ± Dust to be of use for future paleoclimate dust studies and simulations using Earth system models of high to intermediate complexity. Helianthemum songaricum and H. ordosicum are two shrubs disjunctively distributed in Central Asia and northwestern China. For conservation purposes, we used genotyping by sequencing (GBS) to investigate the genetic diversity and genetic structure of their populations. Based on the GBS data, H. songaricum populations showed considerable genetic differences from H. ordosicum populations. Helianthemum songaricum populations also showed a stronger population genetic structure within the isolated valleys in the Tianshan Mountains than was seen in previous studies. We speculated that the two species may represent two cotemporal migration events between the Middle East and Central Asia/Ordos Plateau since the early Pliocene. Due to the intense uplift of the Tianshan Mountains in the late Pliocene, populations of H. songaricum were isolated in different valleys. Subsequently, the cold glacial climate during the Pleistocene intensified the in situ intraspecific differentiation of the species. Based on our single nucleotide polymorphism data, we propose habitat damage by anthropological activities, where the two species inhabit should be urgently prohibited by executive management. The newly developed paleo‐climate calibrated Community Earth System Model, version 2 (pCESM2) simulates a more realistic global temperature response to external forcing compared to the standard CESM2. Here we show that the code modifications in pCESM2 result in increased atmospheric convection and a northward shift of the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zones. These changes are exacerbated under Last Glacial Maximum forcing, resulting in tropical precipitation changes that are inconsistent with both proxy data evidence and simulations with other contemporary models. Similar model‐data disagreements are also present in the standard CESM2. Thus, more work is needed to improve the simulated Last Glacial Maximum hydroclimate response in CESM2. We further suggest that well‐constrained paleo climates should be given a larger emphasis in model development more broadly, as these climates can help identify issues with model parameterizations under altered forcing and thus improve the fidelity of simulations of past, present, and future climates. The realism of any given model is however largely determined by a delicate calibration of the simulated physics in order to capture the observed features of the climate system. A recent study showed that the newly developed paleo‐climate calibrated Community Earth System Model, version 2 greatly improves the global temperature response in simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum compared to the standard model. This was achieved by altering properties of cloud processes in the model code. Here we show that the same changes that improve the overall model sensitivity help exaggerate issues with the distribution of tropical precipitation; similar precipitation issues are also present in the standard model. Eight extant species of pangolins are currently recognized. Recent studies found that two mitochondrial haplotypes identified in confiscations in Hong Kong could not be assigned to any known pangolin species, implying the existence of a species. Here, we report that two additional mitochondrial haplotypes identified in independent confiscations from Yunnan align with the putative species haplotypes supporting the existence of this mysterious species/population. To verify the new species scenario we performed a comprehensive analysis of scale characteristics and 138 whole genomes representing all recognized pangolin species and the cryptic new species, 98 of which were generated here. Our morphometric results clearly attributed this cryptic species to Asian pangolins (Manis sp.) and the genomic data provide robust and compelling evidence that it is a pangolin species distinct from those recognized previously, which separated from the Philippine pangolin and Malayan pangolin over 5 Mya. Our study provides a solid genomic basis for its formal recognition as the ninth pangolin species or the fifth Asian one, supporting a new taxonomic classification of pangolins. The effects of glacial climate changes and recent anthropogenic activities driven by illegal trade are inferred to have caused its population decline with the genomic signatures showing low genetic diversity, a high level of inbreeding, and high genetic load. Our finding greatly expands current knowledge of pangolin diversity and evolution and has vital implications for conservation efforts to prevent the extinction of this enigmatic and endangered species from the wild. Ice core records from Greenland provide evidence for multiple abrupt cold–warm– cold events recurring at millennial time scales during the last glacial interval. Although climate variations resembling Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) oscillations have been identified in climate archives across the globe, our understanding of the climate and ecosystem impacts of the Greenland warming events in lower latitudes remains incomplete. Here, we investigate the influence of DO-cold-to-warm transitions on the global atmospheric circulation pattern. We comprehensively analyze δ18O changes during DO transitions in a globally distributed dataset of speleothems and set those in context with simulations of a comprehensive high-resolution climate model featuring internal millennial-scale variations of similar magnitude. Across the globe, speleothem δ18O signals and model results indicate consistent large-scale changes in precipitation amount, moisture source, or seasonality of precipitation associated with the DO transitions, in agreement with northward shifts of the Hadley circulation. Furthermore, we identify a decreasing trend in the amplitude of DO transitions with increasing distances from the North Atlantic region. This provides quantitative observational evidence for previous suggestions of the North Atlantic region being the focal point for these archetypes of past abrupt climate changes. Under glacial climates, continental ice sheets such as, e.g., the Greenland Ice Sheet, extended onto the continental shelves and often carved out deep cross‐shelf troughs. The sedimentary infill of such troughs commonly is a product of the complex interactions between the ice sheets, largely driving sediment input into the ocean, and the surrounding water masses. Off West Greenland, research has focused on the Disko and Uummannaq troughs, leaving the northerly adjacent Upernavik trough relatively understudied. Hence, neither the chronology of deglaciation nor the details of its postglacial infill are sufficiently well understood. Here, we combine computed tomography image‐derived information with geochemical and granulometric data from four sediment cores recovered from the Upernavik trough that point to (i) deglaciation of the mid‐shelf probably around 13.4 cal. ka BP that was most likely driven by a northward advection of warmer Atlantic waters during the Bølling–Allerød, (ii) the presence of widespread mass wasting around 8 cal. ka BP on the inner shelf and (iii) the complex interplay between various modes of sediment input, transport and deposition under hemipelagic sedimentation afterwards. While this interplay complicates provenance studies, we identify two major sediment delivery mechanisms that control transport and deposition from four sediment source areas. Through the Early Holocene the relative contributions of sediments from the various sources changed from a predominantly local origin to more southerly sources, mainly driven by decreasing input from the local sources. The integration of relative sediment source contributions with varying sedimentation rates challenges previous studies postulating intensified sediment delivery from the south through a greater influence of the West Greenland Current and highlights the need for the integration of sediment input and transport mechanisms into provenance studies in the area. During the last glacial interval, the Northern Hemisphere climate was punctuated by a series of abrupt changes between two characteristic climate regimes. The existence of stadial (cold) and interstadial (milder) periods is typically attributed to a hypothesised bistability in the glacial North Atlantic climate system, allowing for rapid transitions from the stadial to the interstadial state – the so-called Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) events – and more gradual yet still fairly abrupt reverse shifts. The physical mechanisms driving these regime transitions remain debated. DO events are characterised by substantial warming over Greenland and a reorganisation of the Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation, which are evident from concomitant shifts in the δ18 O ratios and dust concentration records from Greenland ice cores. Treating the combined δ18 O and dust record obtained by the North Greenland Ice Core Project (NGRIP) as a realisation of a two-dimensional, time-homogeneous, and Markovian stochastic process, we present a reconstruction of its underlying deterministic drift based on the leading-order terms of the Kramers–Moyal equation. The analysis reveals two basins of attraction in the two-dimensional state space that can be identified with the stadial and interstadial regimes. The drift term of the dust exhibits a double-fold bifurcation structure, while – in contrast to prevailing assumptions – the δ18 O component of the drift is clearly mono-stable. This suggests that the last glacial's Greenland temperatures should not be regarded as an intrinsically bistable climate variable. Instead, the two-regime nature of the δ18 O record is apparently inherited from a coupling to another bistable climate process. The community stability is the main ability to resist and be resilient to climate changes. In a world of climate warming and melting glaciers, alpine gravel encroachment was occurring universally and threatening hillside grassland ecosystem. Gravel encroachment caused by climate warming and glacial melting may alter community structure and community stability in alpine meadow. Yet, the effects of climate warming-induced gravel encroachment on grassland communities are unknown. Here, a 1-year short-term field experiment was conducted to explore the early stage drive process of gravel encroachment on community structure and stability at four different gravel encroachment levels 0%, 30%, 60%, and 90% gravel coverage at an alpine meadow on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau, by analyzing the changes of dominant species stability and species asynchrony to the simulated gravel encroachment processes. Gravel encroachment rapidly changed the species composition and species ranking of alpine meadow plant community in a short period of time. Specifically, community stability of alpine meadow decreased by 61.78–79.48%, which may be due to the reduced dominant species stability and species asynchrony. Species asynchrony and dominant species stability were reduced by 2.65–17.39% and 46.51–67.97%, respectively. The results of this study demonstrate that gravel encroachment presents a severe negative impact on community structure and stability of alpine meadow in the short term, the longer term and comprehensive study should be conducted to accurate prediction of global warming-induced indirect effects on alpine grassland ecosystems. Effective moisture (EM) distribution in the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) region is strongly related to regional topography. An understanding of climate change and the interactions between climate variables can help predict future climate variations. Here, we reconstruct a stack EM record for Southwest China over the past 90 kyr using environmental magnetism in lake sediment. The EM in Southwest China at the orbital scale was closely linked to precession‐induced change in North Hemisphere solar insolation, as well as the ISM variability. However, at the glacial‐interglacial scale, it was decoupled with ISM intensity, being wetter during glacial periods (weakened ISM) and drier during interglacial periods (enhanced ISM). Combined with modern meteorological observations, we suggest that the topographical barrier effect and temperature induced dryness are responsible for the decoupling between ISM intensity and EM. The terrestrial topography and temperature strongly influence EM distribution by altering the dynamics of onshore airflow and evapotranspiration. We found that the variation of precession (shifts in the rotational axis of the Earth) and solar insolation are the key contributors to the EM variability at the orbital scale. Unusually, a wetter climate during the glacial period and relatively drier interglacial periods were observed in our records, which is opposite to those found in previous studies (arid glacial and humid interglacial) in monsoon regions, indicating a decoupling pattern between monsoon intensity and EM in study region. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the modern meteorological observations, we conclude that the topography and temperature exert a considerable role in modulating EM distribution and response to the decoupling pattern. Climatic warming following the Last Glacial Maximum caused the southern Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) to begin ∼2,000‐year cycles of retreat and readvance whose cause remains ambiguous. By developing a marine‐calibrated chronology of southern LIS position, we counterintuitively demonstrate that between 17.6 and 11.3 ka, ice advanced during times of northern‐hemisphere warming and retreated during times of northern‐hemisphere cooling. Here we propose a cyclical feedback: Meltwater from ice retreat cooled the northern hemisphere by weakening the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This eventually lead to ice‐sheet readvance, which reduced and rerouted meltwater discharge, and thereby allowed the AMOC to strengthen and the northern hemisphere to warm. Our data suggest that this antiphased ice–climate interaction, paced by ice‐sheet response time, was initiated by synchronous warming and ice retreat ∼18.7–17.6 ka (corresponding to the Erie "Interstade") and reached its apex during the Younger Dryas. Plain Language Summary: Twenty thousand years ago, a colder climate allowed glacial ice to flow from northern and eastern Canada into the Great Lakes region. But when climate began to warm, instead of simply melting from south to north, the margin of this ice front repeatedly retreated and re‐advanced in 2,000‐year cycles. First, we track these advances and retreats using records of ancient Gulf of Mexico water, stored in plankton shells retrieved from a sediment cores. Ice advance redirected water bearing "light" oxygen, with fewer neutrons, from Canada and the Great Lakes into the Mississippi River. When ice retreated, these waters found other courses to the sea, shifting Gulf of Mexico chemistry toward heavier oxygen (carrying more neutrons). Next, we ask why these ice‐margin cycles occurred during a time of monotonically increasing solar radiation to the northern hemisphere. We propose that ice‐sheet melt (during retreat) slowed Atlantic Ocean circulation, causing the northern hemisphere to cool and the ice sheet to gradually regrow. However, this same regrowth reduced meltwater flow to the ocean, causing the northern hemisphere to re‐warm and eventually leading the ice margin to retreat once more. This cycle persisted from approximately 17,600 to 11,300 years ago, until North American ice became too small to sustain this feedback. Damage to speleothems is a common phenomenon in mid-latitude caves, and multiple causes have been proposed. Here we report on one of such type of damage, namely stalagmites that are broken and partially sheared near their base but are still in upright position. Such stalagmites occur in the Obir Caves (Austria) associated with cryogenic cave carbonates, demonstrating the former presence of cave ice. 230Th dating suggests damage to the speleothems during the Last Glacial Maximum. Numerical modelling combined with laboratory measurements demonstrates that internal deformation within a cave ice body cannot fracture stalagmites, even on a steep slope. Instead, temperature changes lead to thermoelastic stresses within an ice body that reach values equaling to and exceeding the tensile strength of even large stalagmites. Differences in thermal expansion coefficients cause a sharp vertical jump in stress between the stalagmite and the surrounding ice body, and the ice lifts the stalagmite as it expands with increasing temperature. This study refutes the previously accepted model that flow of ice breaks stalagmites, and suggests a link between glacial climate variability and corresponding cooling and warming cycles in the subsurface that weaken and eventually fracture stalagmites due to the opposing thermoelastic properties of calcite and ice. Changes in convective activity and hydroclimate over Northeastern Kalimantan are key features to understand glacial to interglacial climate evolution in the center of the West Pacific Warm Pool during the Late Pleistocene to Holocene. We use high-resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanner-derived elemental ratios in sediment Core SO217-18522 (1º 24.106' N, 119º 4.701'E, 975 m water depth) recovered from the northern Makassar Strait to reconstruct changes in precipitation-related weathering and erosion over Northeastern Kalimantan over the last 50 kyr. Enhanced seasonality of rainfall and an extended dry season during Heinrich Stadials (HS4 to HS1) and the Younger Dryas (YD) suggest weakening of the tropical convection associated with a southward shift of the tropical rain belt and the annual mean position of the Intertropical Tropical Convection Zone. Increasing sediment discharge and intensification of convective activity occurred during the early to mid-Holocene during an interval of high Northern Hemisphere insolation, elevated atmospheric pCO2 levels and global warming. Our reconstructions in comparison with regional terrestrial and marine records highlight the high spatial variability of Kalimantan hydroclimate on millennial to glacial-interglacial timescales. In the French north‐western Alps, several lakes of glacial origin, such as Aiguebelette and La Thuile, present some mass‐transport deposits within their sedimentary sequences. These event layers can result from lake sediment destabilization eventually triggered by earthquakes. On Lake Aiguebelette, based on sedimentological, geochemical and magnetic analyses, and high‐resolution seismic and bathymetric surveys a ca 1 m thick event layer was identified in the deepest lake basin and a synchronous ca 2 cm thick deposit in the shallow basin. Age‐depth models based on radiocarbon ages reveal that both mass‐transport deposits in Lake Aiguebelette occurred around the Younger Dryas – Early Holocene climatic transition (i.e. 11 700 cal bp) time range. In Lake La Thuile, located 30 km away, unique mass‐transport deposits (translational slide type) were recorded at the same time range in sedimentary records. Additionally, high‐resolution seismic profiles previously acquired in Lake Annecy and Lake Bourget support the hypothesis of significant mass‐transport deposits occurring at the Younger Dryas – Early Holocene time range. These outcomes on four north‐western peri‐Alpine and Alpine lakes highlight the regional occurrence of mass‐transport deposits in the Younger Dryas – Early Holocene time range. Seismic and rockfall events are discussed as potential sources of these significant and similarly aged mass‐transport deposits. Based on this study and a literature review, the authors suggest that mechanisms induced by rapid climate change and glacial retreat, such as crustal rebound and erosional unloading, could favour the triggering of earthquakes and rockfall events. In the case of mass‐transport deposits archived in north‐western Alpine lakes during this time period, this study favours the hypothesis of increased seismicity as the primary source driving process involved. During abrupt climate changes of the last glacial period paleorecords show large amplitude changes in the dust cycle. We use Earth System model simulations to evaluate processes operating across these events. Idealized Heinrich stadial‐like simulations show a southwards migration of tropical rainfall that dries the Sahel and reduces wet deposition causing a widespread enhancement of tropical dust loading. However, several discrepancies with marine core dust deposition reconstructions are evident. Simulations with a more limited freshwater forcing (0.4 Sv instead of 1.0 Sv) and weaker cooling over the North Atlantic (less than 3°C) show a switch in sign of the stadial dust deposition anomaly in several regions, improving agreement with paleorecords. The simulated dust cycle therefore displays in places a non‐linear response to abrupt change. The global‐mean stadial dust radiative forcing in the more realistic simulations is around −0.2 to −0.6 W m−2 and so could represent an amplifying feedback during these events. The amount and geographical spread of this dust in the atmosphere is sensitive to environmental conditions such as drought. Paleoclimate records show that rapid cooling events centered on the North Atlantic during the last ice‐age also saw large increases in the rate of dust deposited over the ocean. Earth System models are a computational tool that can be used to understand the links between climate and the dust cycle. Using a series of such simulations we found that abrupt cooling events in the North Atlantic can lead to a massive increase in dust over the equatorial (tropical) regions. However, the model's response is in many places non‐linear, meaning that the change in dust is very sensitive to the magnitude of the climate changes occurring. This non‐linearity is mostly due to interactions between changes in the water cycle and the dust. We show that a less severe cooling produces a more realistic dust response when evaluated against paleo‐dust records. Since dust scatters incoming sunlight, increased atmospheric dust during these events may have amplified and even extended the cold phases. Holocene environmental and climate change on the Tibetan Plateau is intensively studied and discussed with the aim to better understand the factors controlling the hydrology of individual river catchments and especially the availability of water which is of utmost significance for the communities downstream in times of rapid climate change. Thus, a late glacial and Holocene sediment record from Lake Heihai in the Kunlun-Pass region was investigated using ostracod and geochemical analyses. Cold and dry conditions were inferred between ca. 12.9 and 12.3 cal ka BP and higher temperatures before and afterwards. The cold spell probably corresponds to the Younger Dryas (YD) event in the North Atlantic region. Warmer and wetter conditions with highest lake levels and decreased lake-water salinity were recorded from ca. 10.8 to 7.0 cal ka BP when the summer monsoon was strengthened. The cold 8.2 cal ka BP event is not significantly recorded in the region probably due to the predominance of the summer monsoon over the westerlies. A declined lake level and increased lake-water salinity as the result of cold and dry conditions are inferred from ca. 7.0 to 4.5 cal ka BP when the strengthening of the mid-latitude westerly circulation probably triggered glacier advances in the catchment. An even lower lake level existed during cold conditions with glacier advances from ca. 4.5 to 1.2 cal ka BP. The level of Lake Heihai rose again after ca. 1.2 cal ka BP due to warmer conditions, causing the retreat of glaciers and higher runoff. Our record from the Kunlun Pass region provides further evidence for the catchment-specific response of hydrographical systems which are partly controlled by glaciers as major water sources. Seed and soil microbiomes strongly affect plant performance, and these effects can scale-up to influence plant community structure. However, seed and soil microbial community composition are variable across landscapes, and different microbial communities can differentially influence multiple plant metrics (biomass, germination rate), and community stabilizing mechanisms. We determined how microbiomes inside seeds and in soils varied among alpine plant species and communities that differed in plant species richness and density. Across 10 common alpine plant species, we found a total of 318 bacterial and 128 fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) associated with seeds, with fungal richness affected by plant species identity more than sampling location. However, seed microbes had only marginally significant effects on plant germination success and timing. In contrast, soil microbes associated with two different plant species had significant effects on plant biomass, and their effect depended both on the plant species and the location the soils were sampled from. This led to significant changes in plant-soil feedback at different locations that varied in plant density and richness, such that plant-soil feedback favored plant species coexistence in some locations and opposed coexistence at other locations. Importantly, we found that coexistence-facilitating feedback was associated with low plant species richness, suggesting that soil microbes may promote the diversity of colonizing plants during the course of climate change and glacial recession. Ice cores from the northwestern Tibetan Plateau (NWTP) contain long records of regional climate variability, but refrozen meltwater and dust in these cores has hampered development of robust timescales. Here, we introduce an approach to dating the ice via the isotopic composition of atmospheric O2 in air bubbles (δ18Oatm), along with annual layer counting and radiocarbon dating. We provide a robust chronology for water isotope records (δ18Oice and d-excess) from three ice cores from the Guliya ice cap in the NWTP. The measurement of δ18Oatm, although common in polar ice core timescales, has rarely been used on ice cores from low-latitude, high-altitude glaciers due to (1) low air pressure, (2) the common presence of refrozen melt that adds dissolved gases and reduces the amount of air available for analysis, and (3) the respiratory consumption of molecular oxygen (O2) by micro-organisms in the ice, which fractionates the δ18O of O2 from the atmospheric value. Here, we make corrections for melt and respiration to address these complications. The resulting records of water isotopes from the Guliya ice cores reveal climatic variations over the last 15,000 y, the timings of which correspond to those observed in independently dated lake and speleothem records and confirm that the Guliya ice cap existed before the Holocene. The millennial-scale drivers of δ18Oice are complex and temporally variable; however, Guliya δ18Oice values since the mid-20th century are the highest since the beginning of the Holocene and have increased with regional air temperature. Sea ice decline in the North Atlantic and Nordic Seas has been proposed to contribute to the repeated abrupt atmospheric warmings recorded in Greenland ice cores during the last glacial period, known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events. However, the understanding of how sea ice changes were coupled with abrupt climate changes during D-O events has remained incomplete due to a lack of suitable high-resolution sea ice proxy records from northwestern North Atlantic regions. Here, we present a subdecadal-scale bromine enrichment (Brenr) record from the NEEM ice core (Northwest Greenland) and sediment core biomarker records to reconstruct the variability of seasonal sea ice in the Baffin Bay and Labrador Sea over a suite of D-O events between 34 and 42 ka. Our results reveal repeated shifts between stable, multiyear sea ice (MYSI) conditions during cold stadials and unstable, seasonal sea ice conditions during warmer interstadials. The shift from stadial to interstadial sea ice conditions occurred rapidly and synchronously with the atmospheric warming over Greenland, while the amplitude of high-frequency sea ice fluctuations increased through interstadials. Our findings suggest that the rapid replacement of widespread MYSI with seasonal sea ice amplified the abrupt climate warming over the course of D-O events and highlight the role of feedbacks associated with late-interstadial seasonal sea ice expansion in driving the North Atlantic ocean-climate system back to stadial conditions. Tertiary relicts often show evolutionary stasis in morphology and ecology and have been hypothesized to retain stable population sizes in refugia. However, recent studies have reported that some relicts evolutionarily shifted their physiology, ecology, and morphology and experienced various patterns of demography. To understand the historical survival of relict plants, a multidimensional study investigating the evolution of ecological and morphological traits as well as population demographic history is needed. The genus Tanakaea (Saxifragaceae) comprises two species in China and Japan. These species share most vegetative characteristics and are sometimes treated as a single species. The distribution pattern is relictual, as the populations are confined to small areas in mesic warm temperate forests less influenced by Quaternary glacial climates. Focusing on the relictual plant group, this study tested the hypotheses of evolutionary stasis and population stability in long‐term refugia. Genetic analyses using plastome sequences and genome‐wide single‐nucleotide polymorphisms revealed divergence of the two species approximately 6.8 million years ago and strong genetic differentiation of the regional populations. Demographic analysis revealed that almost all populations retained stable population sizes during glacial–interglacial climate changes, supporting the traditional view. However, morphological assessments revealed a simultaneous shift in breeding systems (from hermaphrodite to dioecy/non‐clonal to clonal reproduction) in Japanese species and intraspecific differentiation of leaf traits. Therefore, the relict species do not show evolutionary stasis in every aspect. Changes in reproductive characteristics may have contributed to their long‐term in situ survival. Asplenium scolopendrium is distributed in northern temperate forests with many global biogeographic disjunctions. The species complex of A. scolopendrium has been generated by spatial segregation coupled with divergent evolution. We elucidated the biogeographic history of the A. scolopendrium complex by exploring its origin, dispersal and evolution, thus providing insights into the evolutionary history of the Tertiary floras with northern pan-temperate disjunct distributions. The results revealed that all infraspecific taxa descended from a widely distributed common ancestor in the Northern Hemisphere. This pan-temperate ancestral population formed by unidirectional westward dispersal from European origins primarily during the Early Eocene when the Earth's climate was much warmer than today. The splitting of European, American and East Asian lineages occurred during the Early Miocene due to geo-climatic vicariances. Polyploidy events in the American ancestral populations created additional reproductive barriers. The star-shaped haplotypes in each continent indicated that local disjunctions also led to derived genotypes with potential to diverge into different taxa. This intracontinental lineage splitting is likely related to latitudinal range shift and habitat fragmentation caused by glacial cycles and climate change during the Pleistocene. At present, the Basin and Range of the western USA is arid, but geologic studies show evidence of past wetness. The timing of these wetter conditions reveals a close association with glacial conditions. This association has led to the hypothesis of a causal link between glacial climate and regional wetness, but poor age control on the onset of regional wetness thwarts a test of this hypothesis. Here we determine the start of the most recent interval of persistent wetness in the Mono Basin, which is a hydrologically closed depression that sits at the west-central edge of the Basin and Range. The most recent emergence of persistent wetness in the Mono Basin is stratigraphically correlated with the depositional age of Ash 19--a rhyolitic ash bed that represents the oldest tephra of the Wilson Creek Formation and one of the earliest-known products of explosive volcanic activity from the Mono Craters. We constrain the depositional age of Ash 19 by using the U/Th disequilibrium dating method to date carbonates that are younger and older than Ash 19. Our U/Th dating results show that Ash 19 was deposited before the formation of a cross-cutting carbonate bed dated to 69.2 ± 0.3 ka but after an underlying carbonate tufa dated to 67.4 ± 3.5 ka, which suggests that the start of wetness in the Mono Basin was contemporary with the inception of the Last Glaciation--the beginning of Marine Isotope Stage 4--at ca. 70 ka. A unique regional climate progression, ca 14.2-11.5 cal ka BP, in the eastern Great Lakes region of North America is suggested by subfossil logs, high-resolution 14C dates, and established proxy records in New York, USA. The progression began with a northern boreal-type climate ca. 14.2-13.1 ka coeval with the expansion of Lake Iroquois, a transition to a southern boreal-type climate 13.1-12.9 ka that coincided with the transition of Lake Iroquois into progressively lower lake levels, and a continuation of the southern boreal-type climate 12.9-11.5 ka. These conditions and changes are evident in the tree rings and relative dominance of tamarack (Larix laricina) and spruce species (Picea spp.) plus the presence of black ash (Fraxinus nigra) as the only thermophilous species. Together they suggest variations in atmospheric moisture levels, surface winds, temperature extremes, and/or an enhanced seasonality over time. Here we propose that the evolution of the glacial Great Lakes and their interactions with ice sheets, meltwater, winds, and regional topography created a regional glacial lake-effect climate, 14.2-11.5 cal ka BP, that was opposite to the established warming Bølling-Allerød-cold Younger Dryas climate progression. Spectral analysis of the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) δ18O record has been interpreted to show a 1/(1470 yr) spectral peak that is highly statistically significant (p < 0.01). The presence of such a peak, if accurate, provides an important clue about the mechanisms controlling glacial climate. As is standard, however, statistical significance was judged relative to a null model, H0, consisting of an autoregressive order one process, AR(1). In this study, H0 is generalized using an autoregressive moving-average process, ARMA(p, q). A rule of thumb is proposed for evaluating the adequacy of H0 involving comparing the expected and observed variances of the logarithm of a spectral estimate, which are generally consistent insomuch as removal of the ARMA structure from a time series results in an approximately level spectral estimate. An AR(1), or ARMA(1, 0), process is shown to be an inadequate representation of the GISP2 δ18O structure, whereas higher-order ARMA processes result in approximately level spectral estimates. After suitably leveling GISP2 δ18O and accounting for multiple hypothesis testing, multitaper spectral estimation indicates that the 1/(1470 yr) peak is insignificant. The seeming prominence of the 1/(1470 yr) peak is explained as the result of evaluating a spectrum involving higher-order ARMA structure and the peak having been selected on the basis of its seeming anomalous. The proposed technique for evaluating the significance of spectral peaks is also applicable to other geophysical records. Significance Statement: A suitable null hypothesis is necessary for obtaining accurate test results, but a means for evaluating the adequacy of a null hypothesis for a spectral peak has been lacking. A generalized null model is presented in the form of an autoregressive, moving-average process whose adequacy can be gauged by comparing the observed and expected variance of log spectral density. Speleothems from cold high-elevation (and high-latitude) caves are sensitive paleoenvironmental archives, because they form close to the freezing point of water, and Alpine or Arctic soils – the source of carbon dioxide for carbonic-acid dissolution – are thin and experience a short vegetation period. Climatic cooling is therefore likely to disrupt the growth of these speleothems. However, growth hiatuses may paradoxically be overcome when atmospheric cooling leads to lowering of the equilibrium-line altitude and expansion of temperate glaciers over the karst system, which prevents the latter from freezing. Caves in mountain regions of the mid to high latitudes had a much higher chance of being covered by glaciers during cold climatic periods than caves at lower elevations, which were often in the permafrost zone. These periods without frost in caves covered by temperate glacier ice can be recorded by so-called subglacial speleothems if the host rock contains disseminated pyrite. Widely present in impure limestones, dolostones, and marbles, oxidation of this sulfide mineral gives rise to sulfuric-acid dissolution of the host rock, replacing the carbonic-acid dissolution that operates during warm climate periods. This review summarizes the research history of subglacial speleothems, beginning with seminal studies of Castleguard Cave, which extends beneath the Columbia Icefield in Western Canada. Subsequent work on a number of caves in the Eastern and Western Alps in Europe has shown that speleothems from such subglacial environments are widespread and provide unprecedented opportunities to obtain records of environmental change covering the long glacial periods. However, the proxy system behavior of these settings has yet to be fully developed. We therefore propose a suite of diagnostic criteria, some untested, by which to identify and interpret subglacial speleothems, with recommendations for future research. The combination of high δ13C (at or above host rock values) and low δ18O provide a robust first-order proxy for subglacial environments, while trace-element and sulfate stable-isotope (δ34S and δ18O) data can elucidate the dissolution pathway and redox conditions resulting from ice cover. When studies of subglacial speleothems are combined with conventional warm-climate speleothems controlled by soil dynamics, as well as locally present cryogenic cave carbonates (an indicator of the presence of paleo-cave ice accumulations), the possibility of exploiting the full paleoclimate potential of Alpine and Arctic caves on glacial-interglacial timescales opens up. Limited understanding of how Indigenous people have created and managed the Australian landscape continues to have repercussions on how landscapes are culturally interpreted and managed today. Addressing this is critically important as climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires, whilst challenging the objectives, methods and efficacy of contemporary landscape management practices. Here we compare the palaeoecology of vegetation changes across glacial to interglacial states before (Termination II) and after (Termination I) human occupation of the cool temperate rainforests of western Lutruwita (Tasmania). Sediment from Darwin Crater (Termination II) and Lake Selina (Termination I) were analysed using radiometric dating, fossil pollen, charcoal, geochemical, environmental magnetic and sedimentary methods to produce a comprehensive reconstruction of vegetation and landscape dynamics. Results show marked differences in the rainforest response to the transition from glacial to interglacial climates before and after human arrival at c. 43,000 years ago (ka). In the absence of human disturbance, Phyllocladus aspleniifolius-Nothofagus cunninghamii lowland rainforest taxa dominated the last interglacial period (∼77% of the pollen sum) but was reduced in the current interglacial (∼41%) and largely replaced by Gymnoschoenus sphaerocephalus buttongrass moorland (10–23%). This demonstrates the legacy of Indigenous Palawa managed landscapes, primarily using fire to promote landscape openness and prevent the dominance of an ecologically climax rainforest community, until their forced removal via invasion and colonisation ca. 1806. • We conducted multi-proxy analysis on pre-Palawa lake sediments from western Tasmania. • Cold-resistant glacial vegetation dominated in the Darwin Crater vegetation record, preceding Termination II (ca. With a rich sequence of floral and faunal remains spanning the past >65,000 years, Boomplaas Cave is among the more important paleoenvironmental archives from South Africa's southern Cape. However, over the last several decades, its paleoenvironmental records have been the subject of conflicting interpretations, fueling uncertainty over fundamental aspects of Quaternary climate change in the region. Most significantly, researchers have variably interpreted the fossil plant and animal assemblages dating to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) as indicating harsh and arid or humid and productive conditions. This review critically examines the paleoenvironmental evidence from Boomplaas Cave, focusing on its LGM deposits and how they relate to the contentious problem of moisture availability through time. We show that interpretations of aridity during the LGM either (i) lack robust ecological links between the evidence and the paleoenvironmental interpretation, or (ii) are based on spurious patterns arising from sampling effects. In contrast, interpretations of relatively humid conditions during the LGM are grounded in present-day ecological observations and are consistent with both local and regional paleoenvironmental datasets. Overall, the evidence strongly supports the characterization of the LGM as a time of relatively humid conditions, with the transition to the Holocene characterized by increasing aridity. The Last Glacial Termination (T1) featured major changes in global circulation systems that led to a shift from glacial to interglacial climate. While polar ice cores attest to an antiphased thermal pattern at millennial timescales, recent well-dated moraine records from both hemispheres suggest in-phase fluctuations in glaciers through T1, which is inconsistent with the bipolar see-saw paradigm. Here, we present a glacier chronology based on 30 new 10Be surface exposure ages from well-preserved moraines in the Lago Palena/General Vintter basin in northern Patagonia (~ 44°S). We find that the main glacier lobe underwent profound retreat after 19.7 ± 0.7 ka. This recessional trend led to the individualization of the Cerro Riñón glacier by ~ 16.3 ka, which underwent minor readvances at 15.9 ± 0.5 ka during Heinrich Stadial 1, during the Antarctic Cold Reversal with successive maxima at 13.5 ± 0.4, 13.1 ± 0.4, and 13.1 ± 0.5 ka, and a minor culmination at 12.5 ± 0.4 ka during Younger Dryas time. We conclude that fluctuations of Patagonian glaciers during T1 were controlled primarily by climate anomalies brought by shifts in the Southern Westerly Winds (SWW) locus. We posit that the global covariation of mountain glaciers during T1 was linked to variations in atmospheric CO2 (atmCO2) promoted by the interplay of the SWW-Southern Ocean system at millennial timescales. The Eastern Pacific Warm Pool (EPWP) modulates global climate through its connection with tropical Pacific circulation, but sparse paleoceanographic data from this region limits our understanding of its role in past climate variability. We present a 144 kyr alkenone‐sea surface temperature (SST) reconstruction from core NH22P, located in the northern EPWP, that shows local warming occurred during periods of global cooling. Climate model simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum indicate that both ice sheet and greenhouse gas forcing slowed wind speeds over the EPWP, which attenuated glacial cooling of local SST via the wind‐evaporation‐SST feedback. Spectral analysis further suggests precessional pacing of the warming spikes. Vernal equinox insolation could explain this pacing as direct shortwave heating during boreal spring would have contributed to the early seasonal intensification of the EPWP. This work provides crucial constraints on tropical Pacific glacial climate variability and highlights the unique response of the EPWP to global climate forcings. Our understanding of SST variability in the EPWP in the past, however, is limited by a lack of paleoceanographic data. In this study, we present a new record of past changes in EPWP SST based on abundances of algal lipids called alkenones. We use climate models to understand how lower greenhouse gases and increased ice volume affected SST in the EPWP and atmospheric circulation in the ETP. We find that both of these factors result in less evaporation from the EPWP, which limits the amount of cooling the region underwent despite widespread global cooling during the last ice age. Natural forcing from solar and volcanic activity contributes significantly to climate variability. The post‐eruption cooling of strong volcanic eruptions was hypothesized to have led to millennial‐scale variability during Glacials. Cooling induced by volcanic eruption is potentially weaker in the warmer climate. The underlying question is whether the climatic response to natural forcing is state‐dependent. Here, we quantify the response to natural forcing under Last Glacial and Pre‐Industrial conditions in an ensemble of climate model simulations. We evaluate internal and forced variability on annual to multicentennial scales. The global temperature response reveals no state dependency. Small local differences result mainly from state‐dependent sea ice changes. Variability in forced simulations matches paleoclimate reconstructions significantly better than in unforced scenarios. Considering natural forcing is therefore important for model‐data comparison and future projections. [Display omitted] With ongoing global warming and permafrost thawing, weathering processes will change on the Yukon River, with risks for water quality and ecosystem sustainability. Here, we explore the relationship between weathering processes and permafrost cover using elemental concentration and strontium and lithium isotopic data in the dissolved load of 102 samples collected during the summer across most major tributaries of the Yukon River. The Yukon River basin is dominated by silicate weathering with a high contribution from young volcanic rock units. In glaciated mountainous zones, we observe higher carbonate weathering contribution, low Li/Na ratios and low δ 7Li values (<15‰). In these areas, the high denudation rate and high supply of fresh minerals associated with alpine glaciers favor congruent silicate weathering, and sulfide oxidation accelerates carbonate weathering. In floodplains covered by continuous permafrost, we observe a high carbonate weathering contribution, relatively high Li/Na ratios, and low δ 7Li values (∼18‰). We argue that the minimal water–rock interactions in this setting inhibit silicate weathering and favor congruent weathering of easily weatherable minerals (i.e., carbonates). Conversely, in areas with discontinuous or sporadic permafrost, we observe a dominance of silicate weathering, with higher and more variable Li/Na ratios and high δ 7Li values (11–33‰). In this setting, longer water–rock interactions combined with the high supply of fresh minerals from mountain zones favor more incongruent weathering. The unique history of Pleistocene glaciations on the Yukon River basin also influences weathering processes. Many areas of the basin were never glaciated during the Pleistocene, and rivers draining those regions have higher δ 7Li values suggesting more incongruent weathering associated with deeper flow paths and longer water residence time in the regolith. Our work underlines that water–rock interactions, including active layer weathering and groundwater inputs, are highly dependent on climate conditions and glacial processes across the Yukon River basin, with key implications for future water quality in this warming basin. The Himalayan, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush (HKH-TMHA) are the three main mountain ranges in the high-mountain Asia region, covering the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). In this study, we identified glacial lakes in the HKH-TMHA region based on multitemporal Landsat images taken from 1990 to 2020. We analyzed the spatial distribution and evolution of glacial lakes in the HKH-TMHA region from the perspective of their elevation, size, and terrain aspect; then, we described their temporal changes. The results showed that approximately 84.56% of the glacial lakes (84.1% of the total lake area) were located at elevations between 4000 m and 5500 m, and glacial lakes with areas ranging from 0.01–0.5 km2 accounted for approximately 95.21% of the number and 63.01% of the total area of glacial lakes. The number (38.64%) and area (58.83%) of south-facing glacial lakes were largest in HKH-TMHA and expanded significantly over time. There were 5835 (664.84 ± 89.72 km2) glacial lakes in 1990; from 1990 to 2020, the number of glacial lakes in the HKH-TMHA region increased by 5974 (408.93 km2) in total; and the annual average increase in the area of glacial lakes reached 13.63 km2 (11.15%). In 2020, the total number of glacial lake reached to 9673 (899.66 ± 120.63 km2). In addition, most glacial lakes were located in the Eastern Himalayan, China, and the Indus Basin. Based on the precipitation and temperature analyses performed in our study area, we found inconsistent climate characteristics and changes in the three mountain ranges. In general, the daily precipitation (temperature) increased by 1.0766 mm (1.0311 °C), 0.8544 mm (0.8346 °C), and 0.8245 mm (−0.1042 °C) on the yearly, summer, and winter scales, respectively. Glacial melting and climate change are common contributors to glacial lake expansion. The investigation of glacial lakes in this region can provide basic supporting data for research on glacial lake-related disasters, land cover, and climate change in the high-mountain Asia region. Evaporites were deposited in every saline lake in the western Qaidam Basin (QB) during the late Quaternary, but the role of the Quaternary glacial environment in the formation of evaporite deposits remains to be clarified. In this paper, five upper Quaternary evaporite-bearing profiles in the western QB are studied. Uranium-thorium (U–Th) dating was applied to obtain the depositional ages of these profiles, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis was applied to identify the evaporite minerals. The U–Th dating results indicate that halite (NaCl)-dominated profile D08 and mirabilite (Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O)-dominated profile MXK were deposited between 146.1 ± 53.4 ka and 171.3 ± 27.2 ka, mainly corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6; the bloedite (Na 2 Mg(SO 4) 2 ·4H 2 O)-dominated profiles WMX1 and WMX2 were deposited between 182.1 ± 2.5 ka and 206.7 ± 7.0 ka, mainly corresponding to the late period of MIS7; and the mirabilite and halite-dominated salt layers in profile D30 were deposited between 9.0 ± 0.7 ka and 14.3 ± 1.6 ka, with mirabilite deposit ages corresponding to MIS2 and early MIS1. The minerals in the profiles identified by XRD analyses are mirabilite, thenardite (Na 2 SO 4), bloedite, gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O), starkeyite (MgSO 4 ·4H 2 O), hexahydrite (MgSO 4 ·6H 2 O) and halite. This study, combined with those of previously reported evaporite deposits in the western QB, indicates that MIS7, MIS6 and MIS2 were important evaporite deposition periods in the late Quaternary. Evaporite depositions in the QB during MIS6 and MIS2 were attributed to a decrease in temperature and shrinkage of the saline lake hydrosphere. The cold glacial climate during MIS6 and MIS2 was conducive to mirabilite deposition in the western QB, while the relatively warm climate of the late period MIS7 was conducive to bloedite deposition. Global biosphere productivity is the largest uptake flux of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), and it plays an important role in past and future carbon cycles. However, global estimation of biosphere productivity remains a challenge. Using the ancient air enclosed in polar ice cores, we present the first 800,000-year record of triple isotopic ratios of atmospheric oxygen, which reflects past global biosphere productivity. We observe that global biosphere productivity in the past eight glacial intervals was lower than that in the preindustrial era and that, in most cases, it starts to increase millennia before deglaciations. Both variations occur concomitantly with CO2 changes, implying a dominant control of CO2 on global biosphere productivity that supports a pervasive negative feedback under the glacial climate. After the Elatina glaciation of Snowball Earth, at least four distinct glacial advances and sea-level retreats punctuated Ediacaran time: Gaskiers glaciation (580 Ma), Fauquier glaciation (571 Ma), Bou-Azzer glaciation (566 Ma) and Hankalchough glaciation (551 Ma). Tillites or diamictites are commonly controversial, but periglacial paleosols with distinctive physical structure and degree of chemical weathering offer supporting evidence of glaciation and sea-level change useful for stratigraphic correlation. This paper reviews glacial advances of the Ediacaran stratotype and other sequences, and also reveals the value of paleosols and chemical index of alteration to understand the upper Squantum and Brookline members of the Roxbury Conglomerate near Boston, Massachusetts. The Boston Bay ice wedges are periglacial paleosols, and evidence of maritime glacial climate like that of modern coastal Greenland and Arctic Canada. Simple discoidal vendobiont fossils (Aspidella terranovica) in the Dorchester Member of the Roxbury Conglomerate and in the Cambridge Argillite are in heterolithic shale–siltstone facies that are interpreted as intertidal to shallow marine environments. Local marine transgressions and other paleosols showing significant chemical weathering represent temperate interglacial paleoclimates. Short glacial advances affecting climate and sea-level enable subdivision of the Ediacaran Period. While the impact of dust on climate and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) during the interglacial period such as the mid‐Holocene has been studied extensively, its impact during the glacial period is unclear. Here we investigate how the climate and AMOC would change if there had been no dust during the Last Glacial Maximum. Model simulations show that the dust removal leads to a global cooling of over 2.4°C and a weakening of AMOC by ∼30%. Such temperature change is opposite in sign to that for the MH. The cooling is attributed to the increase of snow and ice albedo and weakening of AMOC when dust is removed, and is amplified through a positive feedback between sea ice and AMOC. Our results indicate that the climate and AMOC are more sensitive to dust change during the glacial than the interglacial period. Plain Language Summary: Dust in the atmosphere reflects and absorbs sunlight, reducing the shortwave radiation reaching the surface, while the dust deposited on snow and ice reduces the surface albedo and increases the shortwave radiation received at the surface. High‐latitude glacierized coastal catchments of the Gulf of Alaska (GoA) are undergoing rapid hydrologic changes in response to climate change and glacial recession. These catchments deliver important nutrients in the form of both inorganic and organic matter to the nearshore marine environment, yet are relatively understudied with respect to characterization of the sediment and solute generation processes and total yields. Using multiple linear regression informed by Bayesian Information Criterion analysis we empirically demonstrate how watershed characteristics affect suspended sediment and solute generation as represented by concentration‐discharge relationships. We find that watershed mean slope and relief control solute generation and that solute yields are influenced most by glacier coverage. We contribute a new flux and concentration‐discharge based conceptualization for understanding solute cycles across a hydroclimatic gradient of GoA watersheds that can be used to better understand future watershed responses to rapid hydrologic change. The influences on climate in the Northwest Tibetan Plateau (NwTP) have changed on millennial to precessional timescales and have been dependent on the size of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets, Northern Hemisphere summer insolation, and the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). All these influences control the position and intensity of the westerlies over Central Asia and the Tibetan Plateau and of the Asian Monsoon over South Asia. The top 187.4 m of a 309.7-m ice core (2015GP) drilled on the plateau of the Guliya ice cap contains a 41-kyr climate history of the NwTP, a region where information on past climate and environment is limited. The oxygen isotope ratio (δ18O), and ammonium (NH 4 +) and dust concentration records from 2015GP show that during the glacial (41–17.5 ka BP) temperature and precipitation in the NwTP were primarily influenced on the precessional timescale by summer insolation, while at millennial resolution the climate was linked to the North Atlantic temperature via the westerlies. During the deglaciation (17.5–12 ka BP) summer insolation remained an important temperature forcing, but the influence of the North Atlantic climate on the NwTP climate weakened as the westerlies shifted northward. The Guliya Holocene δ18O record shows that NwTP climate was no longer in phase with decreasing summer insolation or with North Atlantic climate, perhaps as the moisture source and pathways were more determinative factors in isotopic fractionation than temperature, and/or incoming solar radiation (insolation) forcing was replaced by rising greenhouse gas concentrations as the primary driver of warming in NwTP. • An ice core from the western Kunlun Mts shows orbital to millennial climate changes. • Summer insolation and westerlies influenced glacial stage climate in western Kunlun. • Ice core δ18O variations in NW Tibet and Greenland were similar in last glacial. • Ice core δ18O variations in NW Tibet and Greenland were opposite after 17.5 ka BP. • Mechanisms influencing δ18O in NW Tibet may vary with changing climatic conditions. The multiple equilibrium behavior of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is related to the mode transition of the AMOC, which played an important role in abrupt glacial climate changes. However, the difference between modern and glacial climates is not well understood. Here, we examined the structure of the multiple equilibria of the AMOC under the modern and glacial climates through hysteresis experiments using an earth system model of intermediate complexity. The glacial AMOC exhibited a shallower AMOC mode but not the off mode, and a narrower range of multiple equilibria than the modern AMOC. This glacial hysteresis behavior occurred associated with a shift of deep water formation due to changes in surface air temperature and sea ice, whereas that of the modern AMOC is attributed to the basin‐scale salinity feedback. These features were commonly found in two glacial simulations with different strengths of the AMOC at the Last Glacial Maximum. In the glacial climate, however, a stable shallow‐AMOC mode appears because of the changes in the deep water formation site caused by atmospheric cooling. Quaternary palynology in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) was initiated in the 1960s to meet the needs of economic development in western China. Pollen analysis was conducted for the first time on a 200-m long core of Quaternary lacustrine sediments taken from the main body of the TP in order to study pollen assemblages as well as vegetation and climate changes of glacial (cold)/interglacial (warm) periods. Pollen analysis of alpine snow and ice began at the first scientific expedition to the TP in the 1970s. After the 1980s, a series of international collaborative programs were carried out under Sino-French, Sino-German, Sino-Australian, and Sino-American cooperation, marking the integration of Chinese Quaternary palynology society with the international community. New methods for Quaternary palynology were gradually promoted and applied, changing the vegetational and climatic interpretation of Quaternary palynology from qualitative to quantitative. Since the 1990s, many palynologists have carried out extensive Quaternary palynological studies on fossil pollen sites of more than 60 lakes/sections and alpine glaciers in the TP to discuss the spatiotemporal vegetation changes and climatic and environmental evolution of the TP since the Pleistocene. Over the past half-century, Quaternary palynology in the TP has contributed to the establishment of the Chinese Quaternary pollen database and the study of vegetation and climate evolution since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the TP. Currently available pollen records revealed the spatial and temporal distribution of vegetation in the TP since the LGM, exhibiting expansions and shrinkages of forest, meadow, grassland and desert in different periods such as the LGM, the last deglaciation, and Holocene optimum period. The paleomonsoon reflected by paleovegetation since the LGM has undergone the changes of weak-strengthening-strong-weakening but still active-shrinking, which is mainly affected by solar insolation. Climate has been viewed as a primary control on the rates and patterns of glacial erosion, yet our understanding of the mechanisms by which climate influences glacial erosion is limited. We hypothesize that climate controls the patterns of glacial erosion by altering the basal thermal regime of glaciers. The basal thermal regime is a first-order control on the spatial patterns of glacial erosion. Polythermal glaciers contain both cold-based portions that protect bedrock from erosion and warm-based portions that actively erode bedrock. In this study, we model the impact of various climatic conditions on glacier basal thermal regimes and patterns of glacial erosion in mountainous regions. We couple a sliding-dependent glacial erosion model with the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) to simulate the evolution of the glacier basal thermal regime and glacial erosion in a synthetic landscape. We find that both basal thermal regimes and glacial erosion patterns are sensitive to climatic conditions, and glacial erosion patterns follow the patterns of the basal thermal regime. Cold temperature leads to limited glacial erosion at high elevations due to cold-based conditions. Increasing precipitation can overcome the impact of cold temperature on the basal thermal regime by accumulating thick ice and lowering the melting point of ice at the base of glaciers. High precipitation rates, therefore, tend to cause warm-based conditions at high elevations, resulting in intensive erosion near the peak of the mountain range. Previous studies often assessed the impact of climate on the spatial patterns of glacial erosion by integrating climatic conditions into the equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) of glaciers, and glacial erosion is suggested to be maximal around the ELA. However, our results show that different climatic conditions produce glaciers with similar ELAs but different patterns of basal thermal regime and glacial erosion, suggesting that there might not be any direct correlation between ELAs and glacial erosion patterns. Northern Asia (here, the Russian Federation east of the Urals) played a key role in the spread of anatomically modern humans (AMH) across the Eurasian continent during the Upper Palaeolithic (UP). This time interval witnessed the climatically harshest and most variable part of the last glacial epoch when AMH spread to all continents, with the exception of ice-covered Antarctica, thus raising questions about how humans and environments interacted. Our review of available proxy records shows that the study region was largely dominated by productive steppe and tundra plant communities, which promoted a diverse small- to mega-scale fauna throughout the UP. While this rich fauna was an ideal food resource for AMH populations, its possible influence on the growth of woody plants through grazing is less well resolved. Another non-climatic factor that may have impacted on the spread of woody taxa are human activities (e.g. setting fires to facilitate hunting). Evidence that small populations of woody taxa were distributed in climatically favourable habitats comes from plant macroremains from sediment sequences and archaeological sites and from aDNA data. Contrary to the long-standing view of a generally colder-than-present last glacial climate, these proxy records reveal evidence that summers were warmer than today by several degrees Celsius, providing additional advantages for human activities. Another benefit for large herbivores, and thus human subsistence, were the generally low winter precipitation levels (similar to those of the modern steppe regions of Mongolia), which sustained year-round grazing grounds. These factors apparently outweighed the harsh colder-than-present winter conditions and promoted habitation of AMH in Northern Asia even during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ca. 30‒18 cal kyr BP. While our understanding of qualitative climate trends, mainly based on fossil pollen records, has substantially improved, quantification of climate parameters is still a challenging task. In a period of ongoing climate changes, identifying drivers of overall and endemic species diversity is a key element in constructing new ecological patterns and determining the main goals of conservation. Such studies are especially crucial if they concern biodiversity hotspot areas. In this study, we explore patterns and drivers of plant endemism (the proportion of endemic plant species to overall plant species richness; PE) in Tajikistan. We used three groups of climatic measures featuring the contemporary and glacial climates as well as climatic changes since the Last Glacial Maximum in the Pleistocene (LGM). To explore relationships between PE and climatic groups, and the most important climatic variables, we applied the Generalised Additive Model and regression trees method respectively. Glacial climate predicted PE variation the most (74.3%), followed by climate stability (55.4%) and current climate (62.4%). The most important variables represented change in precipitation of driest quarter, glacial mean annual temperature and current annual precipitation. LGM climate and its change to date have the greatest influence on contemporary PE patterns in Tajikistan, revealing the evolutionary dependencies between limited-range plants and past climate. Accordingly, annual temperature and precipitation regimes have been the most crucial drivers of PE since the LGM until today. The study revealed the dependence of the PE on a stabilized water-energy supply. The changing temperature and precipitations regimes during the ongoing climate warming may, therefore, increases the threat to geographically isolated cryophilous plants of Tajikistan, while their escape potential to suitable cold habitats is highly topographically limited. The Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) is an essential global ocean water mass at intermediate depths. Coupled climate models in isotope‐enabled (δ18O, δD), fully coupled Community Earth System Model and Paleoclimate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 3 consistently show shallower AAIW depth at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) due to the northward shift of AAIW. More importantly, modeling results suggest that the northward shift of AAIW can be caused by sea ice expansion and the weakened hydrological cycle under the glacial climate. On the contrary, the AAIW under global warming tends to shift poleward compared to the pre‐industrial period driven by the retreating sea ice and strengthened hydrological cycle. However, the AAIW depth will shallow in response to the ongoing warming, likely due to the overwhelming effects of enhanced stratification and shallowing mixed layer. In a conservation and sustainable management perspective, we identify the ecological, climatic, and demographic factors responsible for the genetic diversity patterns of the European silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) at its southwestern range margin (Pyrenees Mountains, France, Europe). We sampled 45 populations throughout the French Pyrenees and eight neighboring reference populations in the Massif Central, Alps, and Corsica. We genotyped 1,620 individuals at three chloroplast and ten nuclear microsatellite loci. We analyzed within‐ and among‐population genetic diversity using phylogeographic reconstructions, tests of isolation‐by‐distance, Bayesian population structure inference, modeling of demographic scenarios, and regression analyses of genetic variables with current and past environmental variables. Genetic diversity decreased from east to west suggesting isolation‐by‐distance from the Alps to the Pyrenees and from the Eastern to the Western Pyrenees. We identified two Pyrenean lineages that diverged from a third Alpine–Corsica–Massif Central lineage 0.8 to 1.1 M years ago and subsequently formed a secondary contact zone in the Central Pyrenees. Population sizes underwent contrasted changes, with a contraction in the west and an expansion in the east. Glacial climate affected the genetic composition of the populations, with the western genetic cluster only observed in locations corresponding to the coldest past climate and highest elevations. The eastern cluster was observed over a larger range of temperatures and elevations. All demographic events shaping the current spatial structure of genetic diversity took place during the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition, long before the onset of the Holocene. The Western Pyrenees lineage may require additional conservation efforts, whereas the eastern lineage is well protected in in situ gene conservation units. Due to past climate oscillations and the likely emergence of independent refugia, east–west oriented mountain ranges may be important reservoir of genetic diversity in a context of past and ongoing climate change in Europe. We analyze the past 67,000 years of climate using Antarctic ice‐core records to constrain the mechanisms involved in (a) the "bipolar seesaw" relationship between Greenland and Antarctic surface temperature variations, and (b) mechanisms of millennial‐scale atmospheric CO2 concentration variations. Specifically, we determine for each Greenland Stadial the rate of Antarctic temperature and atmospheric CO2 rise. We find that Antarctic warming rates significantly decrease as the climate cools during the glacial period, whereas the rate of atmospheric CO2 rise does not significantly change. Also, we find that the rates of Antarctic warming and atmospheric CO2 rise are both insensitive to whether a given stadial contains a Heinrich event. These results challenge the view that a single Southern‐Ocean‐based mechanism dominates the observed glacial variability in Antarctic temperature and atmospheric CO2. Instead, our results are consistent with an important contribution of low‐ and mid‐latitude processes to millennial‐scale atmospheric CO2 changes. Here, using ice‐core data, we show that the rate of Antarctic warming reduces as the glacial climate cools. In contrast, the rate of atmospheric CO2 rise is insensitive to glacial cooling. Neither the warming rate nor the rate of atmospheric CO2 rise are affected by iceberg discharge events. Our result is in contrast with a simple common Southern Ocean control on atmospheric CO2 and Antarctic temperature and suggests that the millennial‐scale atmospheric CO2 changes include significant contributions from mid‐to‐low latitudes and processes independent of the background climate. The Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene were time periods of significant transitions between glacial and warm climate states. In this contribution, a study of changes of diatom assemblage compositions in recurrence plots, rarefaction models, and their rank abundance distributions (Fisher's alpha) in the Southeast Baltic is presented. Three sites were studied for this purpose: Lake Kamyshovoye (Kaliningrad Region, Russia), Lake Kašučiai (W Lithuania), and Lake Petrešiūnai (NE Lithuania). The recurrence plots revealed a compositionally stable interval at the end of the Pleistocene and a subsequent continuous and directional turnover (compositional trend) of local diatom communities throughout the Early Holocene. An analysis of rank abundance distributions and rarefaction analysis revealed a persistent long-term increase in the diversity of diatoms which started after the Younger Dryas cold episode; additional data suggest possible effects of the multi-centennial scale "9.3" Ka BP cold event. The close correlation between diatom diversity changes and geographically widespread climatic trends shows strong potential for this algae group in the regional analyses of climatic perturbations. The Qaidam Basin marks a crucial boundary between the Westerlies and the Asian summer monsoons. Previous studies in the Qaidam Basin have advanced our knowledge of the paleoclimate over glacial to interglacial cycles. However, our understanding of the paleoclimatic sensitivity of the Qaidam Basin to the relative strength of these two climatic driving forces remains limited due to the lack of regional paleoclimatic reconstructions. The Qaidam Basin is proposed as a regional and global eolian dust source during the glacial periods, during which a cold, dry climate is associated with the equatorward shift of the jet stream. On the contrary, paleoshoreline records suggest that a highstand lake stage prevailed in late Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) and lasted until 15 ka. To address this conundrum, we have applied an integrated approach to reconstructing the regional paleoclimatic history by combining compound-specific isotope analysis, lake temperature reconstruction, and numerical modeling. Our results show varying paleoclimate associated with the dynamic climate boundary since 45 ka: (1) a wet climate during late MIS 3, when the Asian summer monsoons are strengthened under high summer insolation and penetrate further into Central Asia; (2) a general cold, dry but wetter than at present climate in the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), when the Asian summer monsoons retreat and the Westerlies become dominant; and (3) three short periods of extreme aridity corresponding to the Younger Dryas and Heinrich 2 and 4 events, when the normal moisture transport via the Westerlies and Asian summer monsoons is interrupted. The numerical modeling supports an increase in the effective precipitation during the LGM due to reduced evaporation under low summer insolation. These results suggest that the Westerlies and Asian summer monsoons alternately controlled the climate in the Qaidam Basin in response to precessional forcing during the late Pleistocene. Northern Australia is a region where limited information exists on environments at the last glacial maximum (LGM). Girraween Lagoon is located on the central northern coast of Australia and is a site representative of regional tropical savanna woodlands. Girraween Lagoon remained a perennial waterbody throughout the LGM, and as a result retains a complete proxy record of last-glacial climate, vegetation and fire. This study combines independent palynological and geochemical analyses to demonstrate a dramatic reduction in both tree cover and woody richness, and an expansion of grassland, relative to current vegetation at the site. The process of tree decline was primarily controlled by the cool-dry glacial climate and CO2 effects, though more localised site characteristics restricted wetland-associated vegetation. Fire processes played less of a role in determining vegetation than during the Holocene and modern day, with reduced fire activity consistent with significantly lower biomass available to burn. Girraween Lagoon's unique and detailed palaeoecological record provides the opportunity to explore and assess modelling studies of vegetation distribution during the LGM, particularly where a number of different global vegetation and/or climate simulations are inconsistent for northern Australia, and at a range of resolutions.
