Abstract

Suppliers of metallic components with high-precision surfaces are facing a trend towards zero-defect tolerance regarding their finishing. Because of the lack of standardization and the difficulty of the task, this inspection is generally done manually. This work aims to detect defects on machined metal parts even if their orientation and shape are very similar to the surface finishing. A machine vision system, performing the detection of flaws on textured surfaces is fully described. One of its main devices, the lighting system, has been carefully designed to ensure the imaging of defects. Hence, multiple images are acquired under different lighting conditions, processed separately, and merged into one. Features extracted from this fused image and the former processing steps establish the feature space for a supervised learning classifier based on artificial neural networks. Results of the automated inspection show that the system works effectively with a low value of false rejections, which makes it suitable for industrial applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Dietary nutrient composition is essential for shaping important fitness traits and behaviours. Many organisms are protein limited, and for Drosophila melanogaster this limitation manifests at the level of the single most limiting essential Amino Acid (AA) in the diet. The identity of this AA and its effects on female fecundity is readily predictable by a procedure called exome matching in which the sum of AAs encoded by a consumer's exome is used to predict the relative proportion of AAs required in its diet. However, the exome matching calculation does not weight AA contributions to the overall profile by protein size or expression. Here, we update the exome matching calculation to include these weightings. Surprisingly, although nearly half of the transcriptome is differentially expressed when comparing male and female flies, we found that creating transcriptome-weighted exome matched diets for each sex did not enhance their fecundity over that supported by exome matching alone. These data indicate that while organisms may require different amounts of dietary protein across conditions, the relative proportion of the constituent AAs remains constant. Interestingly, we also found that exome matched AA profiles are generally conserved across taxa and that the composition of these profiles might be explained by energetic and elemental limitations on microbial AA synthesis. 17. Automatic Detection of Olive Tree Canopies for Groves with Thick Plant Cover on the Ground.

Abstract

Marking the tree canopies is an unavoidable step in any study working with high-resolution aerial images taken by a UAV in any fruit tree crop, such as olive trees, as the extraction of pixel features from these canopies is the first step to build the models whose predictions are compared with the ground truth obtained by measurements made with other types of sensors. Marking these canopies manually is an arduous and tedious process that is replaced by automatic methods that rarely work well for groves with a thick plant cover on the ground. This paper develops a standard method for the detection of olive tree canopies from high-resolution aerial images taken by a multispectral camera, regardless of the plant cover density between canopies. The method is based on the relative spatial information between canopies.The planting pattern used by the grower is computed and extrapolated using Delaunay triangulation in order to fuse this knowledge with that previously obtained from spectral information. It is shown that the minimisation of a certain function provides an optimal fit of the parameters that define the marking of the trees, yielding promising results of 77.5% recall and 70.9% precision.

18. Prediction of Fruity Aroma Intensity and Defect Presence in Virgin Olive Oil Using an Electronic Nose.

Abstract

The organoleptic profile of a Virgin Olive Oil is a key quality parameter that is currently obtained by human sensory panels. The development of an instrumental technique capable of providing information about this profile quickly and online is of great interest. This work employed a general purpose e-nose, in lab conditions, to predict the level of fruity aroma and the presence of defects in Virgin Olive Oils. The raw data provided by the e-nose were used to extract a set of features that fed a regressor to predict the level of fruity aroma and a classifier to detect the presence of defects. The results obtained were a mean validation error of 0.5 units for the prediction of fruity aroma using lasso regression; and 88% accuracy for the defect detection using logistic regression. Finally, the identification of two out of ten specific sensors of the e-nose that can provide successful results paves the way to the design of low-cost specific electronic noses for this application.

Abstract

Aim: This cross-sectional case-control study aimed to determine if salivary levels of lipoxin A4 (LXA4), protectin D1 (PD1), resolvin E1 (RvE1) and maresin 1 (MaR1) might constitute a reflection of periodontal health/disease status., Materials and Methods: One hundred and two periodontitis patients and 61 healthy controls were recruited. Periodontal clinical status was determined by criteria based on full-mouth clinico-radiographical data. Salivary concentration of the analytes was calculated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The association between the biomarkers with disease status was assessed individually and adjusted for confounding using multivariate binary logistic regression models., Results: Significantly decreased LXA4 and increased PD1/MaR1 salivary levels were detected in periodontitis patients in comparison with healthy controls. However, no significant differences were observed for RvE1 levels between clinical groups. Clinical parameters such as probing depth, clinical attachment loss and extent were negatively correlated with LXA4, positively correlated with PD1/MaR1 and not correlated with RvE1 salivary levels. Logistic regression analyses revealed a strong/independent association of LXA4, PD1 and MaR1 salivary levels regarding disease status. Interaction effects between demographic predictor variables and salivary concentration of LXA4, PD1 and MaR1 were also identified., Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated a strong/independent association between reduced LXA4 and increased PD1/MaR1 salivary levels with periodontitis suggesting an imbalance in the specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) in periodontal disease., (© 2019 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Abstract

The presence of minor compounds in virgin olive oils has been proven to play multiple positive roles in health protection, encouraging its production. The key factors that influence the oil quality are ripening stages and the state of health of the fruit. For this reason, at the oil mill's reception yard, fruits are visually inspected and separated according to their external appearance. In this way, the process parameters can be better adjusted to improve the quantity and/or quality of olive oil. This paper presents a proposal to automatically determine the oil quality before being produced from a previous inspection of the incoming fruits. Expert assessment of the fruit conditions guided the image processing. The proposal has been validated through the analysis of 74 batches of olives coming from an oil mill. Best correlation results between the image processing and the analytical data were found in the acidity index, peroxide values, ethyl ester, polyphenols, chlorophylls, and carotenoids.

21. Expert System for Monitoring the Malaxing State of the Olive Paste Based on Computer Vision † .

Abstract

The malaxing of olive paste is one of the most important sub-processes in the virgin olive oil production process. The master continuously supervises the olive paste inside the themomixer to assess the preparation state of the olive paste and he acts manually over the process variables. The viscosity, granularity, and the presence of olive oil over the paste are the main indicators of the olive paste state. Furthermore, the temperature, time, coadjuvant addition and the shovel speeds are the process variables in the thermomixer. In this work, different image-processing parameters have been proposed to automatically assess the aforementioned indicators and they have been used as inputs in the designed fuzzy controller. Also, the outputs of this controller have been evaluated according to a sequence of images obtained inside the thermomixer and during the malaxing process in a real olive mill.

22. Non-Invasive Methodology to Estimate Polyphenol Content in Extra Virgin Olive Oil Based on Stepwise Multilinear Regression.

Abstract

Normally the olive oil quality is assessed by chemical analysis according to international standards. These norms define chemical and organoleptic markers, and depending on the markers, the olive oil can be labelled as lampante, virgin, or extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), the last being an indicator of top quality. The polyphenol content is related to EVOO organoleptic features, and different scientific works have studied the positive influence that these compounds have on human health. The works carried out in this paper are focused on studying relations between the polyphenol content in olive oil samples and its spectral response in the near infrared spectra. In this context, several acquisition parameters have been assessed to optimize the measurement process within the virgin olive oil production process. The best regression model reached a mean error value of 156.14 mg/kg in leave one out cross validation, and the higher regression coefficient was 0.81 through holdout validation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Abstract

The quality of virgin olive oil is related to the agronomic conditions of the olive fruits and the process variables of the production process. Nowadays, food markets demand better products in terms of safety, health and organoleptic properties with competitive prices. Innovative techniques for process control, inspection and classification have been developed in order to to achieve these requirements. This paper presents a review of the most significant sensing technologies which are increasingly used in the olive oil industry to supervise and control the virgin olive oil production process. Throughout the present work, the main research studies in the literature that employ non-invasive technologies such as infrared spectroscopy, computer vision, machine olfaction technology, electronic tongues and dielectric spectroscopy are analysed and their main results and conclusions are presented. 24. Sorting Olive Batches for the Milling Process Using Image Processing.

Abstract

The quality of virgin olive oil obtained in the milling process is directly bound to the characteristics of the olives. Hence, the correct classification of the different incoming olive batches is crucial to reach the maximum quality of the oil. The aim of this work is to provide an automatic inspection system, based on computer vision, and to classify automatically different batches of olives entering the milling process. The classification is based on the differentiation between ground and tree olives. For this purpose, three different species have been studied (Picudo, Picual and Hojiblanco). The samples have been obtained by picking the olives directly from the tree or from the ground. The feature vector of the samples has been obtained on the basis of the olive image histograms. Moreover, different image preprocessing has been employed, and two classification techniques have been used: these are discriminant analysis and neural networks. The proposed methodology has been validated successfully, obtaining good classification results.

Abstract

Unlabelled: Autoimmune hepatitis is a generally progressive, chronic hepatitis of unknown cause but with an autoimmune background. In fact, one clue to diagnosis autoimmune hepatitis is the presence of other diseases with autoimmune features like thyroiditis, ulcerative colitis or type 1 diabetes. Although non-specific hematologic abnormalities have been described during the course of autoimmune hepatitis we have not found agranulocytosis in association in a review of the literature. We describe a case of agranulocytosis which appeared simultaneously associated with a flare of autoimmune hepatitis. A possible autoimmune origin of the neutropenia could be extrapolated to explain the association on the basis of the nature of the underlying liver disease, temporal association, sex, positive anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibodies, and the successful and dose-dependent effect of corticoids on both processes., Conclusion: We report on for the first time a case of concurrent severe autoimmune hepatitis and agranulocytosis. An autoimmune common mechanism could explain both processes.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to apply the in vitro keratinocyte culture techniques and the tissue engineering principles to human urothelium, to reconstruct an in vitro three-dimensional human bladder mucosa, suitable for grafting., Material and Methods: Biopsy specimens of human bladder mucosa were obtained from patients undergoing suprapubic prostatectomy, in vitro cultured and finally, an immunohistochemical study was made., Results: A three-dimensional in vitro tissue was obtained, composed of a bio-artificial submucosa (fibrin gel and fibroblast) where the uroepithelial cells were seeding. We used a biodegradable polyglycolic acid mesh to facilitate the tissue manipulation and implantation. An immature epithelium was obtained with a weak immunostaining to cytokeratins. The immunohistochemical study could not demonstrate the development of basement membrane., Conclusions: In vitro keratinocyte culture techniques could be applied to other epithelial tissues like the urothelium. We obtained a three-dimensional in vitro tissue suitable for grafting in a relatively short time, which needs the matrix interactions in order to mature.

We present an alternative treatment of the intraepithelial neoplasms of penis (Bowen's disease), the topical application of imiquimod 5% cream. It was applied 3 times weekly for 5 weeks. Imiquimod is an imidazoquinolone immune response modifier that has been shown to have indirect antiviral and antitumor effects with few adverse effects. Imiquimod 5% cream may represent an alternative treatment option for Bowen's disease.

Abstract

We report a new case of inverted papilloma of the ureter, with an uncommon clinic manifestation as a obstructive uropathy. In spite of the bening nature the inverted papilloma of the urinary tract, it can be multifocal and relapsing and it may be associated with low rate urothelial carcinomas. A precise pre-operative diagnosis is necessary for a conservative or endourologic treatment. The followup of these cases with periodic urography and cystoscopy is mandatory.

Abstract

We report the case of a 27 year old man who presented a nodule in the ventral face of the penis, which increased in volume and turned painful during erection so a vascular lesion was suspected, later confirmed with a Doppler study. A complete excision of the lesion was carried out with local anaesthesia. The pathological specimen was informed as "angiolimphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia" in its intravascular form. This is the third communication of this kind of lesion in the penis but no other adopted the intravascular variant like the present case. We discuss about this exceptional entity and make review of the most relevant literature.
