In the last decade, great attention was placed on insects to increase feed-food production without negatively affecting the environment. In this research study we compare three different insect species (Alphitobius diaperinus, Tenebrio molitor, and Zophobas morio - lesser mealworm, mealworm, and superworm), fed the same substrate, on the chemical composition, fatty acid (FA) profile, antioxidant content, and microbiological loads. Superworm larvae show higher dry matter (38.06%) and ether extract (17.65%) contents followed by mealworm and lesser mealworm larvae (32.77%, 27.11% and 13.86%, 10.78%, respectively). No differences were detected in the crude protein and ash content. Superworm larvae showed the highest content of SFA (41.43% vs 39.16% and 28.52% of total FA, in lesser mealworm and mealworm, respectively), while mealworm larvae were the richest in MUFA (40.61% vs 34.38% and 32.98% of total FA, in super and lesser mealworm, respectively) and PUFA (29.05% vs 22.29% and 21.21% of total FA in super and lesser mealworm, respectively). Anyhow, in all the larvae the three more representative fatty acids were oleic acid, linoleic acid, and palmitic acid. The least beneficial ratio of n-6/n-3 was detected in Alphitobius diaperinus larvae (53.84), while Zophobas morio larvae showed the healthier ratio (16.04). The antioxidant contents determination revealed a linkage to the fatty acids content. Low differences were determined in microbiological loads of the larvae. The characteristics of the insects revealed the great potential of these three species highlighting the capacities to respond to different requests derived from the food and feed sectors.Highlights Superworm larvae showed the highest content of SFA Mealworms larvae were the richest in PUFA The fat-soluble vitamin content followed the fatty acids content

Augmented Reality (AR) allows the real world to be enhanced through the overlapping of digital information generated by an algorithm or software amplifying the user's perception. In this research, the potential of AR is exploited by applying it to the problem of air pollution visualization to raise awareness of the issue. It is well known that the principal sources of air pollution include industry, domestic heating, traffic, production processes and more others. According to European Environment Agency, air pollution is the largest environmental health risk in Europe in 2022 affecting respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and premature deaths. A suitable combination of GIS-based procedures for data analysis and georeferencing, AR systems for the visualization and exploitation of the results, can be a strategic driver. The research presented in this paper has been experimented in the Marche Region, in the central part of Italy, and in particular the city of Ancona. The pollutant data collected come from 17 Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione Ambientale delle Marche (ARPAM) meteorological ground-based stations located in Marche Region. The data processing have been executed using the software ArcGis Pro instead of a 3D City Model has been acquired from the online 3D ArcGIS platform. According to the Dlgs.155/2010 regulation, the AQI index (Air Quality Index) has been provided by the interpolation of the meteorological ground stations data. The visualization phase has been tackled exploiting in a WebGIS platform and an APP by AR. A 3D immersive visualization is made using five AQI level of air quality (excellent, good, fair, poor, bad) in order to increase the urban sensing.

This study presents the first results from the analysis of water mites collected in Portugal as part of the Biodiversity Genomics Europe project. 307 COI DNA barcodes clustered into 75 BINs are provided, with 38 BINs being unique and deposited for the first time in the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD). 65 species have been identified, of which 36 are new to the water mite fauna of Portugal. Two species, Torrenticola soniae Pešić, sp. nov. and T. elisabethae Pešić, sp. nov. (Torrenticolidae), are described as new to science. 47% of the water mite species currently known from Portugal now have reference barcodes in BOLD. High intraspecific distances were recorded for some species, suggesting the presence of cryptic diversity and species complexes that needs further study. Our results improve the DNA barcode reference database for Portuguese water mites, enhancing species identification accuracy and stimulating future investigation.

In an era dominated by the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance, it is increasingly important to look for alternatives to synthetic antibiotics. In light of these considerations, the synergistic use of essential oils and Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) seems a viable strategy. In this study, we assessed the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) and Fractional Inhibitory Concentration (FIC) of three Essential Oils (EOs): winter savory (Satureja montana), bergamot (Citrus bergamia) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) and of the insect antimicrobial peptide Cecropin A (CecA), alone and in combination with EOs, against two Gram-negative ATCC bacterial strains: Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The MIC results showed that winter savory EO (SmEO) and cinnamon EO (CzEO) exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity against both bacterial strains, whereas bergamot EO (CbEO) and CecA demonstrated comparatively lower antibacterial efficacy. These results were also confirmed by the MBC values. The FIC Indices (FICI) revealed that the most effective synergies were observed with the combinations SmEO/CzEO and SmEO/CbEO against E. coli, while against S. enterica Typhimurium the best combinations were CbEO/CzEO and SmEO/CzEO. Regarding CecA, although it was not the most efficient agent either individually or in combination, it is noteworthy that, when combined, it exhibited antibacterial activity even at a 1:64 dilution.

Human hands have over 20 degrees of freedom, enabled by a complex system of bones, muscles, and joints. Hand differences can significantly impair dexterity and independence in daily activities. Accurate assessment of hand function, particularly digit movement, is vital for effective intervention and rehabilitation. However, current clinical methods rely on subjective observations and limited tests. Smart gloves with inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors have emerged as tools for capturing digit movements, yet their sensor accuracy remains underexplored. This study developed and validated an IMU-based smart glove system for measuring finger joint movements in individuals with hand differences. The glove measured 3D digit rotations and was evaluated against an industrial robotic arm. Tests included rotations around three axes at 1°, 10°, and 90°, simulating extension/flexion, supination/pronation, and abduction/adduction. The IMU sensors demonstrated high accuracy and reliability, with minimal systematic bias and strong positive correlations (p > 0.95 across all tests). Agreement matrices revealed high agreement (10°) in only 4 trials. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) ranged from 1.357 to 5.262 for the 90° tests, 0.094 to 0.538 for the 10° tests, and 0.129 to 0.36 for the 1° tests. Likewise, mean absolute error (MAE) ranged from 0.967 to 4.679 for the 90° tests, 0.073 to 0.386 for the 10° tests, and 0.102 to 0.309 for the 1° tests. The sensor provided precise measurements of digit angles across 0–90° in multiple directions, enabling reliable clinical assessment, remote monitoring, and improved diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation for individuals with hand differences.

ABSTRACT The paper proposes a brief analysis of the main elements that, on a theoretical, normative and situational basis, affect the value of properties placed as collateral for loans, with particular reference to the value they assume in the event that they are affected by an enforced procedure instead of being subject to normal sale, in free market conditions. Starting from the classic analytical estimate of the fair market value of a real estate asset in free market conditions, the paper will quantify the value that the asset should have when the appraiser has to indicate the value from which to start the judicial auction. Considering the regulatory mechanisms in place in Italy, the paper will put in evidence how a value calculated for an execution sale of a property occurring in a foreclosure process is considerably far from its fair market value and even more from its final judicial value, considered as the amount that will be recovered at the end of the sale of the property by judicial auction. For both debtors and creditors, the significant differences between fair market, execution and judicial values become an increasingly topical issue in the face of the growing number of default and distress of loans.

A key challenge in the production of high-grade automotive aluminum components through the High-Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) process is the imperative to minimize imperfection. In addressing this concern, this study utilizes friction stir processing (FSP), a widely recognized intense plastic deformation technique. FSP is applied to systematically alter the microstructure of HPDC Al-4Mg-2Fe, a prominent alloy extensively used in the die-casting sector. By using the pass strategy to incorporate both one-pass and two-pass approaches, the microstructure is selectively altered to establish a defect-free processed zone. The utilization of FSP demonstrates its efficacy in breaking aluminum dendrites and acicular silicon particles, leading to a uniformly dispersed arrangement of equiaxed silicon particles within the aluminum-based matrix. In addition, FSP eradicates porosity and disintegrates needle-like Fe particles, resulting in a more refined and homogeneously distributed structure. Subsequently, the material's mechanical properties processed by FSP were assessed in the longitudinal direction concerning the processing axis and then compared with those of the original base material.The microstructural refinement and reduction in porosity induced by FSP result in a notable enhancement in hardness, with an increase of 23 % after one pass and 37 % after two passes. The substantial improvement in mechanical properties during the FSP process is predominantly attributed to modifications in the morphology, refinement, and dispersion of intermetallic particles within the matrix. This improvement is further complemented by the ultrafine dispersion of casting defects.This study underscores the efficacy of FSP as a valuable tool for modifying microstructures and improving mechanical properties in HPDC Al-4Mg-2Fe alloys. Such advancements align with the lightweighting objectives pursued by the automotive industry.

The landscape of an area is not only made up of natural elements but also of man-made elements represented by civil and agricultural artefacts and much more. These elements used to blend aesthetically and harmoniously with the landscape itself thanks to the use of local building materials. Particularly, this contribution examines the use of the travertine in the architecture of the Tuscany region from the Etruscan time to the contemporary age. In Tuscany, travertine is a remarkable example of an identity stone of the territory, so rich in thermal springs that favoured the formation of large deposits of this stone widely used in public and private buildings both in interior design and urban furnishing. The work was carried out through a survey in the Tuscan territory and collection of bibliographic information on the architectural web sites. The survey made it possible to collect a photographic documentation and to assess the state of conservation through the empirical observation of the morphologies of decay when present. Indeed, this stone material in the Mediterranean climate, which characterises Tuscany, shows a good durability against atmospheric agents but may be affected by a chromatic alteration that tends to give the surfaces a greyish appearance. This aesthetic issue is more evident in the Tuscan travertine due to is classic whitish colour.

The upper part of the frequency spectrum (millimeter waves, MMW) applied by modern communications technologies (5G and beyond), makes skin the dominantly exposed tissue to electromagnetic fields. In this work, a methodology for murine skin dosimetry evaluation is presented, intended to contribute to animal studies with mice exposed to MMW radiation, in particular 27.5 GHz. A stratified skin model is proposed and the variations of the skin layers’ thicknesses during a hair cycle are measured in mice. The variations of skin layers’ dielectric properties due to age, based on the changes of total body water, are also evaluated. The impact of these variations in dosimetric metrics (i.e., mean absorbed power density, APD, and power loss) within each layer is assessed and found to be significant. Changes in the skin layers’ thicknesses throughout a hair cycle considerably affect the APD, resulting in a two-fold increase, compared to changes in the dielectric properties due to aging or due to hair presence inside the skin.

Abstract Background Evidence of correlation between genome size, the nuclear haploid DNA content of a cell, environmental factors and life-history traits have been reported in many animal species. Genome size, however, spans over three orders of magnitude across taxa and such a correlation does not seem to follow a universal pattern. In squamate reptiles, the second most species-rich order of vertebrates, there are currently no studies investigating drivers of genome size variability. We run a series of phylogenetic generalized least-squares models on 227 species of squamates to test for possible relationships between genome size and ecological factors including latitudinal distribution, bioclimatic variables and microhabitat use. We also tested whether genome size variation can be associated with parity mode, a highly variable life history trait in this order of reptiles. Results The best-fitting model showed that the interaction between microhabitat use and parity mode mainly accounted for genome size variation. Larger genome sizes were found in live-bearing species that live in rock/sand ecosystems and in egg-laying arboreal taxa. On the other hand, smaller genomes were found in fossorial live-bearing species. Conclusions Environmental factors and species parity mode appear to be among the main parameters explaining genome size variation in squamates. Our results suggest that genome size may favour adaptation of some species to certain environments or could otherwise result from the interaction between environmental factors and parity mode. Integration of genome size and genome sequencing data could help understand the role of differential genome content in the evolutionary process of genome size variation in squamates.

The reshaping of End-of-Life (EoL) components by means of the sheet metal forming process has been considered largely attractive, even from the social and economic point of view. At the same time, EoL parts can often be characterized by non-uniform thicknesses or alternation of work-hardened/undeformed zones as the result of the manufacturing process. Such heterogeneity can hinder a proper reshaping of the EoL part, and residual marks on the reformed blanks can still be present at the end of the reshaping step. In a previous analysis, the authors evaluated the effectiveness of reshaping a blank with a deep-drawn feature by means of the Sheet Hydroforming (SHF) process: it was demonstrated that residual marks were still present if the deep-drawn feature was located in a region not enough strained during the reshaping step. Starting from this condition and adopting a numerical approach, additional investigations were carried out, changing the profile of the load applied by the blank holder and the maximum oil pressure. Numerical results were collected in terms of overall strain severity and residual height of the residual marks from the deep-drawn feature at the end of the reshaping step. Data were then fitted by accurate Response Surfaces trained by means of interpolant Radial Basis Functions and anisotropic Kriging algorithms, subsequently used to carry out a virtual optimization managed by multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOGA-II and NSGA-II). Optimization results, subsequently validated via experimental trials, provided the optimal working conditions to achieve a remarkable reduction of the marks from the deep-drawn feature without the occurrence of rupture.

Medulloblastoma (MB) is a common primary brain cancer in children. The sonic hedgehog (SHH) pathway is indispensable for the normal development of the cerebellum, and MB is often caused by persistent SHH activation owing to mutations in pathway components. Patched1 (PTCH1) is the primary receptor for the SHH ligand and a negative regulator of the SHH signal transduction pathway. Mice heterozygous for the Ptch1 gene (Ptch1+/−) are predisposed to MB development. Irradiation of newborn Ptch1+/− mice dramatically increases MB occurrence. A genetic background carrying the Ptch1 mutation significantly influences the risk of developing MB. This study aims to investigate the genetic background-related mechanisms that regulate radiation-induced cellular response and oncogenesis in the cerebellum. We employed multiple approaches, including: (a) analysis of cellular radiosensitivity in granule cell precursors (GCPs), the MB cells of origin, derived from Ptch1 mice with a genetic background that is sensitive (CD1) or resistant (C57Bl/6) to the induction of radiogenic MB; (b) identification of genes differentially expressed in spontaneous and radiation-induced MBs from these two mouse strains; (c) bioinformatic analysis to correlate the expression of radiation-induced genes with survival in MB patients; and (d) examining the expression of these genes in ex vivo MBs induced by single or repeated radiation doses. We have identified a potential gene expression signature—Trp53bp1, Bax, Cyclin D1, p21, and Nanog—that influences tumor response. In ex vivo cultured spontaneous MBs, the expression levels of these genes increase after irradiation in CD1 mice, but not in mice with a C57Bl/6 genetic background, suggesting that this signature could predict tumor response to radiation therapy and help develop strategies for targeting DNA damage repair in tumors. A detailed understanding of the mechanisms behind genetic background-related susceptibility to radiation-induced oncogenic responses is crucial for translational research.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a zoonotic disease with consequences for public health as well as the economy. In the EU, compulsory eradication programmes have been applied, and most territories in Italy have been reported as disease-free (FTs). However, outbreaks (OBs), i.e., an officially confirmed occurrence of bTB in one or more animals in an establishment, have continued to be reported. In this study we provide an overview of bTB in terms of OB numbers in cattle from Italian FTs. Legislative sources were collected to find the FTs, the relevant declaration of free status year (FSY), and regional control and surveillance plans. Then, descriptive and statistical analyses were applied to the collected OBs. A total of 12 regions and 19 provinces were declared FTs in the 20 years from 2003 to 2023. Differences in regional plans were observed with respect to the percentages of herds that were annually controlled (control frequency). Overall, 370 OBs were recorded. A non-statistically significant decrease in the OB incidence rate after the FSY was declared. However, a notable increase in OBs detected at slaughterhouses after the FSY suggests that control systems (serological tests) at the herd level are not completely effective. Differences in the herds’ control frequencies among FTs seem to not have had a significant influence on the observed OB number. The Tuscany region was the most affected FT based on the OB numbers after the FSY (especially in the last year). Epidemiologically relevant primary determinants seem to be the farming system (semi-extensive and adjacent herds) and the cattle movements from positive incidence areas (trade and animal fairs). The role of wild boars in the disease maintenance cannot be excluded. The results of this study stress the need to revise bTB eradication and surveillance plans based on risk analysis.

Studies on short- and long-term memory and their decline with aging in horses are still limited. This research aimed to assess the learning and short- and long-term memory abilities of adult and senior horses. A total of 21 adult horses (5–15 years) and 23 senior horses (16 years and older) were subjected to a behavioral test (Target Touch Test), which was repeated three times each for the initial test (T1) and again after 10 days (T10). Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences between adult and senior horses in the three tests conducted at T1. However, a significant difference was observed at T10 (χ2 = 42.1; p < 0.001). In fact, senior horses took longer to complete the test than adults. A significant difference between males and females, adults and seniors, at T1 and T10 (χ2 = 56.3; p < 0.001) was found, but no difference between male and female adult and senior horses in completing the three single tests at T1 and T10 was evidenced. In conclusion, even senior horses are capable of associative learning, maintaining the memory of this learning even after 10 days. However, they show slower recovery times for recalling memorized information compared to animals under 16 years of age.

Doped organic semiconductors are critical to emerging device applications, including thermoelectrics, bioelectronics, and neuromorphic computing devices. It is commonly assumed that low conductivities in these materials result primarily from charge trapping by the Coulomb potentials of the dopant counterions. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study rebutting this belief. Using a newly developed doping technique based on ion exchange, we prepare highly doped films with several counterions of varying size and shape and characterize their carrier density, electrical conductivity, and paracrystalline disorder. In this uniquely large data set composed of several classes of high-mobility conjugated polymers, each doped with at least five different ions, we find electrical conductivity to be strongly correlated with paracrystalline disorder but poorly correlated with ionic size, suggesting that Coulomb traps do not limit transport. A general model for interacting electrons in highly doped polymers is proposed and carefully parametrized against atomistic calculations, enabling the calculation of electrical conductivity within the framework of transient localization theory. Theoretical calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental data, providing insights into the disorder-limited nature of charge transport and suggesting new strategies to further improve conductivities.
