Information has been omnipresent and all-powerful for almost two centuries, and now possesses sophisticated and invasive means of imposing itself and creating opinion. It was crucial in the Enlightenment and in the preparation of the French Revolution by the intellectual and bourgeois elites. Its characteristic is to be the opposite of intangible truths, to be moving, malleable and adaptable. It is the new replacing the old. It is bracketed by history, because it ignores tradition and no longer needs the past. The creation of opinion in the 18th century introduced a concept of freedom that in fact conceals totalitarianism. People are told what to think. Information is a weapon against all forms of personal reflection and inner life. It imposes itself and imposes, making it impossible to distance oneself. It even kills the democracy it boasts about.

Prepared by other iconoclasms, French revolutionary vandalism spared nothing and inspired the destruction of successive revolutions throughout the world. The contradiction lies in the fact that, at the same time, the actors of this drama were developing the idea of heritage that is still prevalent in our country today. There was no shortage of decrees and laws, most of which had no effect. Two prominent examples are briefly discussed here: the desecration of the royal basilica of Saint-Denis and the fate of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris. The powerlessness of a few men who were aware of the tragedy unfolding before them shows how the machine that mercilessly crushed human beings was also particularly effective in erasing the traces and roots of a two-thousand-year-old culture founded on God and the King.

This article presents the results of a systematic review of the literature on dialogue-based CALL, resulting in a conceptual framework for research on the matter. Applications allowing a learner to have a conversation in a foreign language with a computer have been studied from various perspectives and under different names (dialogue systems, conversational agents, chatbots…). Considering the fragmentation of what we identify under the term dialogue-based CALL, we attempt to offer a structured overview of these efforts into a conceptual framework. Through a methodical search strategy, we collected a corpus of 343 publications. From this corpus, we formalized an operational definition of dialogue-based CALL, which allowed us to identify 96 relevant systems. Analyzing the type of dialogue they offer, on a continuum of constraints on form and meaning, we propose to classify those systems into four groups. We have called these "branching," "form-focused," "goal-oriented" and "reactive" systems, and we describe their corresponding interactional, instructional and technological traits. We summarize the main results from empirical studies on such systems, distinguishing observational, survey and experimental studies, and discuss the impact of dialogue-based CALL on motivation and L2 development, identifying positive evidence on both outcomes. Finally, we propose two main avenues for future research: relative effectiveness of dialogue-based CALL approaches, and dialogue systems as an environment for testing SLA hypotheses.

L-2-halocid dehalogenases (L-2-HADs) have been mainly characterized from terrestrial polluted environments. By contrast, knowledge is still scarce about their role in detoxification of predominant halocarbons in marine environments. Here, phylogenetic analyses showed a wide diversity of homologous L-2-HADs, especially among those belonging to marine bacteria. Previously characterized terrestrial L-2-HADs were part of a monophyletic group (named group A) including proteins of terrestrial and marine origin. Another branch (named group B) contained mostly marine L-2-HADs, with two distinct clades of Bacteroidetes homologs, closely linked to Proteobacteria ones. This study further focused on the characterization of the only L-2-HAD from the flavobacterium Zobellia galactanivorans DsijT (ZgHAD), belonging to one of these Group B clades. The recombinant ZgHAD was shown to dehalogenate bromo- and iodoacetic acids, and gene knockout in Z. galactanivorans revealed a direct role of ZgHAD in tolerance against both haloacetic acids. Analyses of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic datasets confirmed that L-2-HADs from group A were well-represented in terrestrial and marine bacteria, whereas ZgHAD homologs (group B L-2-HADs) were mainly present in marine bacteria, and particularly in host-associated species. Our results suggest that ZgHAD homologs could be key enzymes for marine Bacteroidetes, by conferring selective advantage for the recycling of toxic halogen compounds produced in particular marine habitats, and especially during interactions with macroalgae.

Carrageenans, major cell wall polysaccharides of red macroalgae, are metabolised by marine heterotrophic bacteria through unclear mechanisms. Here, the authors identify an unusual polysaccharide-utilization locus encoding carrageenan catabolism in a marine bacterium, and characterise the complete pathway.

The verbal prefix de- gives rise to a certain number of polysemic verbs, certain senses of which are found in the simple form, differing only in nuances, while others represent specific developments. Semic analysis enables these differences in meaning to be measured and determines whether there is a syntactic basis, depending on whether the distinction is inherent to the sememes or depends on the construction within which they occur. The polysemy measured in this way can also be explained by the various values or functions of the prefix, which may express direction, difference, inversion of process, or transitivity.

Coastal climate adaptation strategies are needed to build salt marsh resiliency and maintain critical ecosystem services in response to impacts caused by climate change. Although resident microbial communities perform crucial biogeochemical cycles for salt marsh functioning, their response to restoration practices is still understudied. One promising restoration strategy is the placement of sand or sediment onto the marsh platform to increase marsh resiliency. A previous study examined the above- and below-ground structure, soil carbon dioxide emissions, and pore water constituents in Spartina alterniflora-vegetated natural marsh sediments and sand-amended sediments at varying inundation regimes. Here, we analyzed samples from the same experiment to test the effect of sand-amendments on the microbial communities after 5 months. Along with the previously observed changes in biogeochemistry, sand amendments drastically modified the bacterial communities, decreasing richness and diversity. The dominant sulfur-cycling bacterial community found in natural sediments was replaced by one dominated by iron oxidizers and aerobic heterotrophs, the abundance of which correlated with higher CO2-flux. In particular, the relative abundance of iron-oxidizing Zetaproteobacteria increased in the sand-amended sediments, possibly contributing to acidification by the formation of iron oxyhydroxides. Our data suggest that the bacterial community structure can equilibrate if the inundation regime is maintained within the optimal range for S. alterniflora. While long-term effects of changes in bacterial community on the growth of S. alterniflora are not clear, our results suggest that analyzing the microbial community composition could be a useful tool to monitor climate adaptation and restoration efforts.

Flavobacteriia are recognized as key players in the marine carbon cycle, due to their ability to efficiently degrade algal polysaccharides both in the open ocean and in coastal regions. The chemical complexity of algal polysaccharides, their differences between algal groups and variations through time and space, imply that marine flavobacteria have evolved dedicated degradation mechanisms and regulation of their metabolism during interactions with algae. In the present study, we report the first transcriptome-wide gene expression analysis for an alga-associated flavobacterium during polysaccharide degradation. Zobellia galactanivorans DsijT, originally isolated from a red alga, was grown in minimal medium with either glucose (used as a reference monosaccharide) or one selected algal polysaccharide from brown (alginate, laminarin) or red algae (agar, porphyran, ι- or κ-carrageenan) as sole carbon source. Expression profiles were determined using whole-genome microarrays. Integration of genomic knowledge with the automatic building of a co-expression network allowed the experimental validation of operon-like transcription units. Differential expression analysis revealed large transcriptomic shifts depending on the carbon source. Unexpectedly, transcriptomes shared common signatures when growing on chemically divergent polysaccharides from the same algal phylum. Together with the induction of numerous transcription factors, this hints at complex regulation events that fine-tune the cell behavior during interactions with algal biomass in the marine environment. The results further highlight genes and loci that may participate in polysaccharide utilization, notably encoding Carbohydrate Active enZymes (CAZymes) and glycan binding proteins together with a number of proteins of unknown function. This constitutes a set of candidate genes potentially representing new substrate specificities. By providing an unprecedented view of global transcriptomic responses during polysaccharide utilization in an alga-associated model flavobacterium, this study expands the current knowledge on the functional role of flavobacteria in the marine carbon cycle and on their interactions with algae.

Kelps are founding species of temperate marine ecosystems, living in intertidal coastal areas where they are often challenged by generalist and specialist herbivores. As most sessile organisms, kelps develop defensive strategies to restrain grazing damage and preserve their own fitness during interactions with herbivores. To decipher some inducible defense and signaling mechanisms, we carried out metabolome and transcriptome analyses in two emblematic kelp species, Lessonia spicata from South Pacific coasts and Laminaria digitata from North Atlantic, when challenged with their main specialist herbivores. Mass spectrometry based metabolomics revealed large metabolic changes induced in these two brown algae following challenges with their own specialist herbivores. Targeted metabolic profiling of L. spicata further showed that free fatty acid (FFA) and amino acid (AA) metabolisms were particularly regulated under grazing. An early stress response was illustrated by the accumulation of Sulphur containing amino acids in the first twelve hours of herbivory pressure. At latter time periods (after 24 hours), we observed FFA liberation and eicosanoid oxylipins synthesis likely representing metabolites related to stress. Global transcriptomic analysis identified sets of candidate genes specifically induced by grazing in both kelps. qPCR analysis of the top candidate genes during a 48-hours time course validated the results. Most of these genes were particularly activated by herbivore challenge after 24 hours, suggesting that transcriptional reprogramming could be operated at this time period. We demonstrated the potential utility of these genes as molecular markers for herbivory by measuring their inductions in grazed individuals of field harvested L. digitata and L. spicata. By unravelling the regulation of some metabolites and genes following grazing pressure in two kelps representative of the two hemispheres, this work contributes to provide a set of herbivore-induced chemical and molecular responses in kelp species, showing similar inducible responses upon specialist herbivores in their respective ecosystems.

As marine sessile organisms, seaweeds must respond efficiently to biotic and abiotic challenges in their natural environment to reduce the fitness consequences of wounds and oxidative stress. This study explores the early steps of the defense responses of a large marine brown alga (the tangle kelp Laminaria digitata) and investigates its ability to transmit a warning message to neighboring conspecifics. We compared the early responses to elicitation with oligoguluronates in laboratory-grown and harvested wild individuals of L. digitata. We followed the release of H₂O₂ and the concomitant production of volatile organic compounds. We also monitored the kinetics of expression of defense-related genes following the oxidative burst. Laboratory-grown algae were transplanted in kelp habitats to further evaluate their responses to elicitation after a transient immersion in natural seawater. In addition, a novel conditioning procedure was established to mimic field conditions in the laboratory. Our experiments showed that L. digitata integrates waterborne cues present in the kelp bed and/or released from elicited neighboring plants. Indeed, the exposure to elicited conspecifics changes the patterns of oxidative burst and volatile emissions and potentiates this kelp for faster induction of genes specifically regulated in response to oligoguluronates. Thus, waterborne signals shape the elicitor-induced responses of kelps through a yet unknown mechanism reminiscent of priming in land plants.

The French colonial city of Saint-Louis du Senegal, declared as World Heritage by UNESCO, is built on a sandbank island in the estuary of the Senegal River (west coast of Africa). On the west side of Saint-Louis, a long and narrow sandspit, the Barbary Tongue (Langue de Barbarie), protects the town from marine submersions. Until the end of 2003, the island of Saint-Louis was located approximately thirty kilometers upstream from the river’s mouth. Therefore, the town was subjected to recurring flood events, often occurring towards the end of the rainy season, due to low discharge conditions of river water into the ocean. To reduce the problem, a breach was opened in the Barbary Tongue in early October 2003, about 7 km southward from the city. After a few months, the gap has widened dramatically and there is now a considerable increase in marine influence in the hydrological regime. The aim of our study is to analyze consequences of such event on flood hazards evolution, knowing that Saint-Louis has not experienced further significant flooding, river waters being rapidly drains off during flood events. As the city of Saint-Louis is lying slightly above the level of actual high seas, it might be vulnerable to rising sea level, even moderate. In this context, we try to discuss what could be the consequences of sea level rise on the city, if marine influence should persist in the regime of Senegal river in the years to come. A model was developed to simulate flood propagation in the city for various scenarios, made from estimates of rising sea level by the end of the century (IPCC, 2007; Rahmstorf et al, 2007; Grinsted et al, 2009). It shows that the town of Saint-Louis could be flooded during the highest annual water during the 21st century.

Reading comprehension and fluency are crucial for successful academic learning and achievement. Yet, a rather large percentage of children still have enormous difficulties in understanding a written text at the end of primary school. In this context, the aim of our study was to investigate whether text simplification, a process of reducing text complexity while keeping its meaning unchanged, can improve reading fluency and comprehension for children learning to read. Furthermore, we were interested in finding out whether some readers would benefit more than others from text simplification as a function of their cognitive and language profile. To address these issues, we developed an iBook application for iPads, which allowed us to present normal and simplified versions of informative and narrative texts to 165 children in grade 2. Reading fluency was measured for each sentence, and text comprehension was measured for each text using multiple-choice questions. The results showed that both reading fluency and reading comprehension were significantly better for simplified than for normal texts. Results showed that poor readers and children with weaker cognitive skills (nonverbal intelligence, memory) benefitted to a greater extent from simplification than good readers and children with somewhat stronger cognitive skills. This study’s objective is to present an overview of experimental applications of Concept-Based Instruction (CBI) for Second Language Acquisition. CBI aims to describe complex grammatical notions in a thorough manner in order to facilitate their acquisition. Even though CBI is still considered as a recent domain in language teaching, the growing body of research makes it timely to present a systematic review, which is currently lacking. In the present paper, we will first describe the theoretical background upon which CBI is grounded. Then, we will carry out an analysis of 29 CBI studies in which a classroom experiment was performed, with the objective of considering the strengths and limits of this teaching method. Although many different mechanisms for subduction initiation have been proposed, only few of them are viable in terms of consistency with observations and reproducibility in numerical experiments. In particular, it has recently been demonstrated that intra‐oceanic subduction triggered by an upwelling mantle plume could greatly contribute to the onset and operation of plate tectonics in the early and, to a lesser degree, modern Earth. On the contrary, the initiation of intra‐continental subduction still remains underappreciated. Here we provide an overview of 1) observational evidence for upwelling of hot mantle material flanked by downgoing proto‐slabs of sinking continental mantle lithosphere, and 2) previously published and new numerical models of plume‐induced subduction initiation. Numerical modeling shows that under the condition of a sufficiently thick (>100 km) continental plate, incipient downthrusting at the level of the lowermost lithospheric mantle can be triggered by plume anomalies of moderate temperatures and without significant strain‐ and/or melt‐related weakening of overlying rocks. This finding is in contrast with the requirements for plume‐induced subduction initiation within oceanic or thinner continental lithosphere. As a result, plume‐lithosphere interactions within continental interiors of Paleozoic‐Proterozoic‐(Archean) platforms are the least demanding (and thus potentially very common) mechanism for initiation of subduction‐like foundering in the Phanerozoic Earth. Our findings are supported by a growing body of new geophysical data collected in various intra‐continental areas. A better understanding of the role of intra‐continental mantle downthrusting and foundering in global plate tectonics and, particularly, in the initiation of "classic" ocean‐continent subduction will benefit from more detailed follow‐up investigations. Plain Language Summary: Subduction zones, areas where tectonic plates sink into the Earth mantle, are a vital component of the plate tectonic cycle and result in the opening and closure of oceans over geologic time. Despite major advances in the study of plate tectonics and geodynamics during the last decades, the causes for triggering subduction are still not well understood. In this paper, we review observations and insights from geodynamic models and show that upwelling inside the mantle (i.e., "mantle plumes or hot spots") offer a viable mechanism that takes lithospheric plates back into the deep mantle, thus initiating subduction. However, subduction initiated by mantle plumes within oceanic tectonic plates has rarely been observed in the Phanerozoic history of Earth (541‐0 Ma). In contrast, thick and old continental segments of tectonic plates appear to provide optimal conditions for their participation in plume‐induced sinking (subduction) into the interior of modern Earth in a mode detectable by geophysical imaging in different regions (Europe, Asia, North America). The role of such intra‐continental mantle sinking in global plate tectonics warrants thorough further examination in forthcoming studies. Coastal floods are commonly associated to meteorological local storm conditions and well-known storm surge phenomenon resulting from both reversed barometric effect and wind driven setup. The wave breaking plays a major role too in water level variation on the beach. It causes two kinds of water level changes: a static component called wave setup and an instantaneous one called swash or uprush. Those to phenomenon are responsible in certain case for more than 2/3 of total level rises above mean sea level. During Lenny and Omar hurricane circulation, the Martinique island west coast was considerably affected. Water levels reached during the two hurricanes circulation was reconstituted (hindcasting method) for North West Coast of de island, particularly for the district of St Pierre. Variation factors was decomposed and modeled with nesting method using ADCIRC hydrodynamic model for tide and meteorological surge. The propagation model SWAN and breaking wave model pCOULWAVE, was used to estimate wave setup and swash components. This work about decomposition of sea water variation level associated to reconstitution of floods limits by field inquest and evidences, point up the district vulnerability in front of strong hurricane swell. It also shows the necessity to consider all sea level variation factors in flood risk studies in terms of preventive documents and actions.

An introduction is presented in which the editor discussed various articles within the issue on topics including various aspect of readability, text simplification, and ways to enrich web technologies with readability metadata.

Abstract: Why some Archean cratons survived for billions of years while the rest of the lithosphere has been reworked, probably for several times, is both enigmatic and fundamental for plate tectonics. Craton longetivity is mainly explained by their buoyancy and analyzed by testing gravitational stability of hardly detectable cratonic mantle “keels” as a function of a hypothesized thermo-rheological structure. Destruction of some cratons suggests that buoyancy is not the only factor of their stability, and many previous studies show that their mechanical strength is equally important. The upper bounds on the integrated strength of cratons are provided by flexural studies demonstrating that T e values (equivalent elastic thickness) in cratons are highest in the world (110–150km). Yet, the lower bounds on the integrated strength of stable cratons are still a matter of debate, as well as the question on how this strength is partitioned between crust and mantle, and which set of rheological parameters is most pertinent. We show that primary observed cratonic features – flat topography and “frozen” heterogeneous crustal structure – represent the missing constraints for understanding of craton longevity. The cratonic crust is characterized by isostatically misbalanced density heterogeneities, suggesting that the lithosphere has to be strong enough to keep them frozen through time without developing major gravitational instabilities and topographic undulations. Hence, to constrain thermo-rheological properties of cratons one should investigate the stability of their topography and internal structure. Our free-surface thermo-mechanical numerical models demonstrate that craton stability cannot be warranted even by very high crustal strength, so that dry olivine mantle and cold thick lithosphere are indispensable conditions. We establish lower-bound limits on the thermo-rheological structure of cratons. In particular, we find that minimal T e needed for long-term stability of continents is approximately 90–110km of which at least 70km should be “contributed” by the lithosphere mantle. The exhumation history of basement areas is poorly constrained because of large gaps in the sedimentary record. Indirect methods including low temperature thermochronology may be used to estimate exhumation, but these require an inverse modeling procedure to interpret the data. Solutions from such modelling are not always satisfactory as they may be too broad or may conflict with independent geological data. In this study, apatite fission-track (AFT) data have been compiled and newly acquired on the French Massif Central. Homogeneous thermal inversion has been realized assuming that some samples were close to the surface during Triassic times. The results show a complex post-Variscan evolution of the French Massif Central. Inversion of the AFT data characterizes high temperatures event during the Jurassic. Temperature range of this event is compatible with the deposition of a significant sedimentary cover which has been later eroded during Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous, interpreted as a probable larger extension of the surrounding sedimentary basins (Paris Basin,AcquitaineBasin and Tethys). Interpretation of the thermal models suggest the presence of the samples close to the surface during Cretaceous and Eocene times. Despite the presence of small outliers of Late Cretaceous, no evidence is recorded excepted for the northern domain by the fission-track data for the deposition of a significant chalk cover as attested in different parts of western Europe.This study shows that the input of geological constraints is necessary to obtain a valuable and refined exhumation history and to reconstruct the presence of a former sedimentary cover presently completely eroded. The comparison between the different areas of the French Massif Central shows, in some case (e.g., Vendée, Morvan, Montagne Noire), a significant cooling during Paleocene related to the construction of the Pyrenean orogeny and illustrates that the Massif Central did not behave as a single unit during Mezo-Cenozoic times.This work is founded and carried out in the framework of the BRGM-TOTAL project Source-to-Sink. People with central field loss (CFL) use peripheral vision to identify words. Eccentric vision provides ambiguous visual inputs to the processes leading to lexical access. Our purpose was to explore the hypothesis that this ambiguity leads to strong influences of inferential processes, our prediction being that increasing word frequency would decrease word reading time. Individuals with bilateral CFL induced by macular diseases read French sentences displayed with a self-paced reading method. Reading time of the last word of each sentence (target word) was recorded. Each target word (in sentence n) was matched with a synonym word (in sentence n+1) of the same length. When using absolute frequency value (Analysis 1), we found that reading time of target words decreased when word frequency increases, even when controlling for word length. The amplitude of this effect is larger than reported in previous investigations of reading with normal subjects. When comparing the effect of relative frequency (low vs. high) within each pair of synonyms (Analysis 2), results show the same pattern as the one observed in Analysis 1. Our results demonstrate clear-cut frequency effects on word reading time and suggest that inferential processes are stronger in CFL readers than in normally sighted observers. The Arabian Sea in the NW Indian Ocean is a place where two major transform boundaries are currently active: the Owen Fracture Zone between India and Arabia and the Owen Transform between India and Somalia. These transform systems result from the fragmentation of the India-Africa Transform boundary, which initiated about 90 Myrs ago, when the India-Seychelles block separated from Madagascar to move towards Eurasia. Therefore, the geological record of the Arabian Sea makes it possible to investigate the sensitivity of a transform system to several major geodynamic changes. Here we focus on the evolution of the India-Africa transform system during the ~47–90 Ma interval. We identify the Late Cretaceous (~90–65 Ma) transform plate boundary along Chain Ridge, in the North Somali Basin. From 65 to ~42–47 Ma, the India-Africa transform is identified at the Chain Fracture Zone, which crossed both the Owen Basin and the North East Oman margin. Finally, the transform system jumped to its present-day location in the vicinity of the Owen Ridge. These shifts of the India-Africa boundary with time provide a consistent paleogeographic framework for the emplacement of the Masirah Ophiolitic Belt, which constitutes a case of ophiolite emplaced along a transform boundary. Results of a 3D modeling study inspired by recent seismic tomography of the Northern Atlantic mantle suggest that a complex pattern of hot mantle distribution with long horizontal flows originating from the Iceland mantle plume has been the norm in the geological past. In the Northern Atlantic the Iceland plume has a strong long-distance impact on intraplate deformation affecting both onshore and offshore parts of Norway's rifted margin. As a result, this margin is characterized by large magnitude differential topography sustained over at least several tens of Myr. Here we use high-resolution 3D thermo-mechanical modeling to demonstrate that the long-distance plume impact can be explained by its fast lateral propagation controlled by pre-existing lithosphere structures. Numerical models show that these structures strongly affect the style of horizontal flow of plume head material. This results in long-distance propagation of hot material emplaced at the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary causing long-wavelength anomalies in onshore topography of Norway's rifted margin. Short-wavelength offshore topographic domes are likely caused by joint occurrence of plume-related thermal perturbations and gravitational forces related to plate thickening (ridge push). Our 3D modeling brings together plume impingement, spreading ridge dynamics, and the formation of anomalous intraplate structures offshore Norway in one scenario.

The need for an updated list of spiders found in French Guiana rose recently due to many upcoming studies planned. In this paper, we list spiders from French Guiana from existing literature (with corrected nomenclature when necessary) and from 2142 spiders sampled in 12 sites for this baseline study. Three hundred and sixty four validated species names of spider were found in the literature and previous authors' works. Additional sampling, conducted for this study added another 89 identified species and 62 other species with only a genus name for now. The total species of spiders sampled in French Guiana is currently 515. Many other Morphospecies were found but not described as species yet. An accumulation curve was drawn with seven of the sampling sites and shows no plateau yet. Therefore, the number of species inhabiting French Guiana cannot yet be determined. As the very large number of singletons found in the collected materials suggests, the accumulation curve indicates nevertheless that more sampling is necessary to discover the many unknown spider species living in French Guiana, with a focus on specific periods (dry season and wet season) and on specific and poorly studied habitats such as canopy, inselberg and cambrouze (local bamboo monospecific forest).
