Action learning is a pedagogical practice that helps participants learn by talking about their workplace action with fellow participants ("comrades in adversity") in their action learning set. This paper raises questions about the action in action learning, such as: how do members of an action learning set learn from and through each other? How do they learn through their developing conversation and interaction? To answer such questions, I argue that, "ethnomethodology" (the study of "member's methods" or "folk methods" for doing "any" kind of practical action) is useful for showing the intricacy of the practical learning process in action learning, as in learning in action, more generally. The paper illustrates the conversational and interactional work of members doing things and learning together in action (for example discovering things in science and in board meetings); and argues that this approach may also be used to study action learning in practice.

This research evaluated the effectiveness of the Public Child Welfare Certification Program, a specialized child welfare program delivered in bachelor of social work (BSW) curricula across the state of Kentucky. This evaluation gathered data for 10 years on satisfaction with the program, preparation for work in the state's child welfare agency, commitment to the agency, and retention. Data were collected from 199 graduates and 84 supervisors at 6 months and 2 years postgraduation. Results indicate that workers and supervisors report a high level of preparedness, as well as high levels of commitment to and retention with the agency. Supervisor support, coworker support, and personal/professional stress were mediators of commitment to the agency. Implications for child welfare practice and social work education are discussed. The article provides an actor-network critique of ideas on community that are influential in higher education and draws implications for networked learning theory and practice. Networked learning is examined as an educational movement which contains alternative models of learning but which offers to create a sense of virtual community within the structures of mass higher education. Benedict Anderson's work is drawn upon to understand the notion of community and to examine "the nation" as a prototypical community. Aspects of actor-network theory are discussed and illustrated, from which a critique of the idea of community in higher education is developed.

A study was conducted to examine the moral dimension of Harold Garfinkel's approach towards organizational phenomena. Data from a study of an executive MBA classroom is analyzed. It is concluded that endogenously organized sequences of interaction and vernacular discourse accomplish the emergent socio-moral order of the class.

Of growing interest in the area of improving the search experience is the collection of implicit user behavior measures (implicit measures) as indications of user interest and user satisfaction. Rather than having to submit explicit user feedback, which can be costly in time and resources and alter the pattern of use within the search experience, some research has explored the collection of implicit measures as an efficient and useful alternative to collecting explicit measure of interest from users. This research article describes a recent study with two main objectives. The first was to test whether there is an association between explicit ratings of user satisfaction and implicit measures of user interest. The second was to understand what implicit measures were most strongly associated with user satisfaction. The domain of interest was Web search. We developed an instrumented browser to collect a variety of measures of user activity and also to ask for explicit judgments of the relevance of individual pages visited and entire search sessions. The data was collected in a workplace setting to improve the generalizability of the results. Results were analyzed using traditional methods (e.g., Bayesian modeling and decision trees) as well as a new usage behavior pattern analysis ("gene analysis"). We found that there was an association between implicit measures of user activity and the user's explicit satisfaction ratings. The best models for individual pages combined clickthrough, time spent on the search result page, and how a user exited a result or ended a search session (exit type/end action). Behavioral patterns (through the gene analysis) can also be used to predict user satisfaction for search sessions. Instead of forcing a choice between active and passive portfolios, we create a better-of-two option to (1) calculate active management's value and (2) find the optimal weights for an active-plus-passive portfolio that dynamically replicates this option through time. To replicate the option at a 10-year horizon, the strategy initially allocates roughly 60% to the active asset. Using historical returns and 60/40 portfolios, we found that the ending wealth distributions in excess of the all-passive portfolio that uses the better-of-two strategy significantly exceeded those of an all-active strategy with superior downside protection. Investors could implement this strategy with institutional or individual separate accounts, institutional funds, or a single fund with passive and active subportfolios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Bleeding is a significant complication of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), despite routine anticoagulation monitoring. This is likely to be multifactorial. In this prospective, single‐centre cohort study of 30 patients undergoing CPB surgery, our aim was to characterise the changes in von Willebrand factor (VWF) function, platelet interaction and the global coagulation changes during and after CPB surgery and to determine whether bleeding can be predicted. Samples were taken at six time points before, during and after CPB surgery. We observed a significant rise in VWF antigen (VWF:Ag) throughout surgery, which continued postoperatively. The absolute VWF collagen‐binding assays (VWF:CB) and VWF ristocetin cofactor (VWF:RCo) rose significantly but the VWF:CB/VWF:Ag and VWF:Ag/VWF:RCo fell significantly (P = 0·0015 and P = 0·0143), suggesting loss of large multimers. We detected a non‐significant trend to loss of VWF:RCo after heparinisation and a significant recovery after protamine reversal which could reflect a direct heparin effect. There was a significant increase in the R and K times with a fall in alpha angle and maximum amplitude after heparin administration, using heparinase‐thromboelastography (TEG). The parameters both significantly improved following protamine (P = 0·007 and P = 0·0054). The activated clotting time (ACT) and heparin anti‐Xa level correlated poorly; neither predicted clinically significant bleeding. None of these parameters had a relationship with intraoperative blood loss or requirement for blood product replacement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The predictable occurrence of whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, has been well documented in several areas. However, information relating to their migratory patterns, residency times and connectivity across broad spatial scales is limited. In the present study photo-identification data is used to describe whale shark population structure and connectivity among known aggregation sites within the Western Central Atlantic Ocean (WCA). From 1999 to 2015, 1,361 individuals were identified from four distinct areas: the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico (n = 1,115); Honduras (n = 146); northern Gulf of Mexico, United States (n = 112), and Belize (n = 49). Seasonal patterns in whale shark occurrence were evident with encounters occurring in the western Caribbean Sea earlier in the year than in the GOM. There was also a significant sex bias with 2.6 times more males present than females. Seventy sharks were observed in more than one area and the highest degree of connectivity occurred among three aggregation sites along the Mesoamerican Reef. Despite this, the majority of resightings occurred in the area where the respective sharks were first identified. This was true for the WCA as a whole, with the exception of Belize. Site fidelity was highest in Mexico. Maximum likelihood modelling resulted in a population estimate of 2,167 (95% c.i. 1585.21–2909.86) sharks throughout the entire region. This study is the first attempt to provide a broad, regional population estimate using photo-identification data from multiple whale shark aggregations. Our aim is to provide population metrics, along with the description of region-scale connectivity, that will help guide conservation action in the WCA. At a global level, rapidly growing photographic databases are allowing for researchers to look beyond the description of single aggregation sites and into the ocean-scale ecology of this pelagic species. The article addresses diversity work as a specific form of management work that involves complex micro-political strategies of resistance. Diversity work stems from an activist agenda that has been adopted by mainstream management practice, especially new public sector management. But in being adopted, it has been critiqued for also being co-opted, and as a result de-radicalized. The article seeks to examine this critique. First, we examine the politics of diversity, discussing critiques of diversity work from political theory and referencing femocrats, an earlier movement affecting women in management. Secondly, we recognize that the ambivalence of diversity work can be understood in terms of co-optation and resistance. Here our central contribution is to understand these two processes in a much more nuanced way, drawing on our own and other organizational studies of diversity work in practice. We locate this more nuanced analysis of diversity work in the emergent context of new public sector management. We draw attention to three micro-practices that help to exhibit a complex understanding of co-optation and resistance: (a) discursive resources, (b) embodied resources and (c) management technologies as resources. Finally, we conclude by outlining the article's contribution: extending Meyerson and Scully's notion of the tempered radical in four key ways. We do this by emphasizing the importance of the specificities of occupational resources of resistance, arguing that resources of resistance move beyond the discursive, emphasizing the gendered, classed and racialized variegated nature of insider/outsider dynamics and finally, stressing that co-optation and resistance are temporal, dynamic, intermingled processes in diversity work. Management Learning has established itself as a new field in management and organizational studies over the last 40 years. This article outlines two shifts towards 'social' theorizing since 1994 when the journal was rebranded. First, the turn to critical management learning, and second, the turn to practice-based studies of management learning. Both of these shifts occurred within the broader turn towards qualitative social research. While critical management learning can lean upon critical theories through which to interpret management learning in practice, it is argued that ethnomethodologically informed practice-based studies complement these approaches by examining 'member's methods' as vernacular critical practices. In this article, we provide an overview of existing university-agency partnerships in child welfare. Then we discuss in detail one state's extension of its partnership approach to enhancing professional development system via an initiative called Credit for Learning, where child welfare workers are able to meet agency training requirements while earning graduate course credit that can be applied towards a master's degree in social work. We tested the hypothesis that yield of the musselPerna canaliculus(Gmelin 1791) could be increased by placing culture ropes deep into the water column to take advantage of deep-water chlorophyllamaxima. The study site, in Pelorus Sound, New Zealand, showed periods of thermal stratification of the water column, causing a high concentration of phytoplankton in deeper water, at the thermocline. Mussels were grown simultaneously at 5 and 17 m, for up to 96 days. Mussel growth and condition index data showed no significant differences between the two depth treatments, indicating that in this system there may not be substantial mussel productivity benefits from lowering mussel farms to the deep-water chlorophyll maximum layer. Background: Point-of-care Ultrasound (POCUS) is particularly useful in low-middle income countries (LMICs) where advanced imaging modalities and diagnostics are often unavailable. However, its use among Internal Medicine (IM) practitioners is limited and without standard curricula. This study describes POCUS scans performed by U.S. IM residents rotating in LMICs to provide recommendations for curriculum development., Methods: IM residents within a global health track performed clinically-indicated POCUS scans at two sites. They logged their interpretations and whether or not the scan changed diagnosis or management. Scans were quality-assured by POCUS experts in the US to validate results. Using the criteria of prevalence, ease of learning, and impact, a framework was developed for a POCUS curriculum for IM practitioners within LMICs., Results: A total of 256 studies were included in analysis. 237 (92.5%) answered the clinical question, 107 (41.8%) changed the diagnosis, and 106 (41.4%) changed management. The most frequently used applications were the Focused Assessment for Sonography for HIV associated TB (FASH) exam, finding fluid (pericardial effusion, pleural effusion, ascites), qualitative assessment of left ventricular function, and assessment for A-lines/B-lines/consolidation. The following scans met ease of learning criteria: FASH-basic, assessment of LV function, A-lines vs. B-lines, and finding fluid.
