This paper presents a narrative review protocol to explore how the proportion of child-specific content of pre-registration programmes in universities impact upon newly qualified nurses' perceptions of preparedness to care for children, young people (CYP), and their families. The preparation and education to become a nurse who cares for children and young people differs from country to country. Providers of pre-registration nurse education offer routes into nursing from diploma to degree and in some countries post-graduate routes. The United Kingdom offers pre-registration programmes leading to qualifying as a children's nurse whereas programmes in countries such as the USA and Canada lead to a professional registration as a registered nurse with postgraduate study to specialize in areas such as pediatrics. The role of pre-registration nursing programmes is to facilitate preparedness for practice. Preparation for practice can include theoretical teaching and practice learning through simulation and face-to-face experience with countries requiring different numbers of practice hours to be completed. Although practice hours are central to nursing education, there is limited evidence on the impact and portion of child-specific content, including clinical learning in preparation of newly qualified nurses to care for CYP and their families. A preliminary search of Prospero, CINAHL, Medline and Cochrane Database indicates that there are no current or in progress reviews identified. The Population of interest, Exposure of interest, and Outcome framework were used to define the research question and inform the eligibility criteria. The review will consider different research designs if related to the research question. The search strategy will conform to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines for systematic reviews. Two independent reviewers will be involved in the screening progress to determine the final studies for inclusion. Eligible studies will be assessed for methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Extraction of study characteristics and data related to the research question will be extracted into a predefined table. This qualitative meta-synthesis was conducted with the aim to understand fathers' experiences and involvement when their child has a chronic condition within family context. Family nurse researchers from five countries identified 19 studies through a systematic search. Inclusion criteria were: (a) fathers as primary informant; (b) children (<19 years) with a chronic condition; (c) written in English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese. Data were synthesized using thematic analysis. Four themes reflected fathers' journey: "Juggling multiple roles" included protector, provider, and supporter; "Managing control" included relinquishing and regaining control; "Creating a new normal" addressed recovery; "Maintaining wellbeing" reflected multiple emotional responses and support found through partners, family, spirituality, and health care communities. Fathers desire to be involved in caring for their child with a chronic condition, yet involvement and experience are continually evolving due to various family needs. Health care providers should consider unconscious assumptions regarding fathers' role in child care and encourage fathers' involvement to facilitate family wellbeing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a paucity of literature on children and young people's participation in decision-making within healthcare organisations in New Zealand. This integrative review examined child self-reported peer-reviewed manuscripts and published guidelines, policy, reviews, expert opinion and legislation to explore how New Zealand children and young people participate in discussions and decision-making processes within healthcare settings and what are barriers and benefits to such participation. Four child self-reported peer-reviewed manuscripts and twelve expert opinion documents were retrieved from four electronic databases including academic, government and institutional websites. Inductive content thematic analysis generated one theme (a discourse in children and young people's participation within healthcare settings), four sub-themes, 11 categories, 93 codes and 202 findings. It is evident within this review that there is a discourse between what expert opinion are stating is required to promote children and young people's participation in discussions and decision-making processes within healthcare settings and what is occurring in practice. Despite literature reporting on how children and young people's participation and voice were essential for healthcare provision, there was sparse literature published on children and young people's participation in discussions and decision-making processes in healthcare delivery in New Zealand. Background: New Zealand is one of the last high‐income countries in the world experiencing significant rates of rheumatic fever. Nurses play a crucial role in rheumatic fever prevention; however, little is understood as to how nurses can best achieve this. Aim: To explore nursing practices that optimise rheumatic fever prevention. Design: An integrative review. Methods: Four electronic databases (CINAHL, SCOPUS, Medline via, and Ovid) were searched for peer‐reviewed empirical articles published from 2013 to 2023. Grey literature (guidelines/reports) was also sourced. Critical appraisal was applied using the Mixed‐Methods Appraisal Tools and the Joanna Briggs Critical Appraisal checklist. Qualitative Research in Psychology, 3(2), 77–101, thematic analysis method was used to generate themes. Results: Seven research articles and three national reports were included. Four themes—in‐depth nursing knowledge and improving prophylaxis adherence, cultural competency, and therapeutic nurse–patient relationships—were found. Conclusion: While nursing knowledge and ways to improve injection adherence are essential, being culturally receptive and developing therapeutic relationships are equally important. Without strong and trusting relationships, it is difficult to deliver care required for prevention success. Implications to care: When working with vulnerable populations it is important to be culturally receptive in all interactions with patients and their families. Impact: New Zealand has high rates of rheumatic fever, especially among vulnerable populations such as Pacific Islanders and Māori. Nurses are often frontline primary care providers who, when skilled with the right tools, can help reduce the prevalence of this disease. Aim: To explore the International Network for Child and Family Centred Care (INCFCC) members' experiences and views on the long‐term impact of COVID‐19 on the nursing workforce. Background: On the 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID‐19 a global pandemic. While some countries adopted a herd immunity approach, others imposed stricter measures to reduce the transmission of the virus. Hospitals in some countries faced an avalanche of extremely sick admissions, whereas others experienced an early surge in cases or were able to control the spread. Design: Discursive paper. Methods: A web‐based survey was e‐mailed to 63 INCFCC members from 28 March to 30 April 2022, as an invitation to share their experience concerning the long‐term impact of COVID‐19 on their role as a nurse educator, clinician or researcher. Results: Sixteen members responded, and the responses were grouped under the themes stress and anxiety, safe staffing and pay, doing things differently, impact on research, impact on teaching and learning, impact on clinical practice, nursing made visible and lessons for the future. Conclusion: The INCFCC members provided their views and highlighted the impact on their role in nursing education, administration, research and/or practice. This discussion of international perspectives on the similarities and differences imposed by COVID‐19 found that the impact was wide‐ranging and prolonged. The overarching theme revealed the resilience of the participating members in the face of COVID‐19. Relevance to Clinical Practice: This study highlights the importance of all areas of nursing, be it in academia or in clinical practice, to work together to learn from the present and to plan for the future. Future work should focus on supporting organizational and personal resiliency and effective interventions to support the nursing workforce both during a disaster and in the recovery phase. Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) impacts the daily life of children and young people. This study aimed to describe the experiences and perspectives of children and young people living with cSLE. An integrative review guided by Whittemore and Knafl was conducted. Extant empirical research published in peer-reviewed journals from 2000 to 2021 on children's self-reported experiences living with cSLE was identified from Scopus, CINAHL, Medline via PubMed, and PsycINFO via Ovid databases. Nineteen studies involving over 1400 participants were included. Four themes and fourteen sub-themes were identified: (1) challenging symptoms (disruptions to life and altered self, severity, fatigue, depression, and anxiety), (2) medicines and side effects (dreaded steroids, conflicting feelings, and medication adherence), (3) complicated life (school sports and social, giving things up, lack of understanding, and quality of life) and (4) ways of coping (family and friends, relationships with health providers, and maintaining positivity). While cSLE shares many similarities with adult-onset SLE, awareness of differences in experiences and perceptions of children and young people is crucial. The significant psychological and social impact of the disease and its treatments necessitates a comprehensive, holistic approach to managing cSLE that considers the unique needs of youth. The prevalence of children living with chronic health conditions is increasing worldwide and can disrupt family roles, relationships, function, and parental involvement in family caregiving. The purpose of this systematic review was to explore fathers' experiences and involvement in caring for a child with a chronic condition. Systematic searches using seven databases were conducted. Study criteria included (1) peer-reviewed original research in English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese, (2) children less than 19 years of age with a chronic condition, (3) fathers (biological or guardian) as direct informants, and (4) outcomes addressing fathers' experience, perceptions, and/or involvement in the child's care. Data were synthesized from ten articles reflecting eight separate studies that utilized quantitative designs. Three areas of focus were identified: Family Functioning, Father's Psychological Health, and Need for Support. Data suggested increased involvement from the father in caring for their child with a chronic condition was associated with improved family functioning, increased anxiety and distress, decreased self-esteem, and increased need for support. This review revealed a paucity of data regarding fathers' experiences and involvement when caring for a child with a chronic condition, with that available primarily from developed countries. The Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) Health system currently provides disability support services to children living with cerebral palsy (CP) and their families built on key policy and legislation which has created two distinct disability support pathway. One pathway is provided through the Accident Compensation Corporation and the other through Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) districts. There is consensus that these pathways result in significant inequities in terms of support service delivery. Māori and Pacific People are particularly impacted by this inequity. In the absence of literature that critically analyses this situation, the purpose of this paper is to examine, understand and critique how disability support services are structured and delivered to children living with cerebral palsy and their families in Aotearoa New Zealand. Two clinical vignettes illustrate the challenges and inequities faced by families and demonstrates how the two separate pathways impact service delivery, opportunities to thrive and health outcomes. This paper will highlight that there is a need for a review of the current system which is timely considering the recent establishment of Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand, Te Aka Whai Ora - Māori Health Authority, and Whaikaha - the Ministry for Disabled Peoples. The COVID-19 pandemic created new challenges for children including access to education and limiting social and emotional connections to extended family, friends, and the community. Globally, opportunities for sharing children's self-reported experiences during lockdown were limited. The primary aim of this project was to create an art-eBook that reflects children's experiences of life during the COVID-19 pandemic that could be shared with other children around the world. Secondly, we wanted to reflect on the consultation undertaken within the International Network of Child and Family Centered Care (INCFCC) using Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle framework. Children from around the world were invited to submit a piece of artwork that reflected their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic via a Qualtrics-survey in May 2020. The children's artwork and written pieces were transcribed verbatim into an eBook and the artwork was further placed into groups based on similarity of meaning. Fifty-five children from 17 countries submitted an artwork piece. Four groups were evident within the children's artwork including infection control measures, positive experiences and emotions (connection to family, fun activities), negative experiences and emotions (social impact, emotional impact), and uniting children globally. The eBook illustrates how children of all ages can provide meaningful insightful commentary and valuable information on their experiences during an unprecedented pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the petition of Maori nurse, philosopher and writer, Doctor Irihapeti Ramsden, for cultural safety (Kawa Whakaruruhau) in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world. Other topics include the 1989 speech of Ramsden at Nelson Polytechnic in which she talked about the legacy and accomplishments of nurse Florence Nightingale, and the obligation of nurses to provide health services that are responsive to humanity.

Aim: To develop and psychometrically test the needs of children questionnaire (NCQ), a new instrument to measure school‐aged children's self‐reported psychosocial physical and emotional needs in paediatric wards. Design: This is an instrument development study based on recommendations for developing a reliable and valid questionnaire. Method: The NCQ was developed over three phases between February 2013–April 2017 and included item generation; content adequacy assessment; questionnaire administration; factor analysis; internal consistency assessment and construct validity. Psychometric properties were assessed after 193 school‐aged children completed the needs of children's questionnaire in four paediatric areas in Australia and New Zealand. Results: The development and validation of the NCQ over two countries resulted in a 16‐item, four‐category tool to measure the self‐reported importance and fulfilment of school‐aged children's needs in hospital. Cronbach's alpha for the combined samples was 0.93. Conclusion: The NCQ bridges a gap to measure the level of importance and fulfilment of school‐aged children's self‐reported needs in hospital. Future testing and validation is needed in other paediatric areas and countries. Impact: The 16‐item NCQ is a valid measure to evaluate if the quality of care delivered and received in hospital is in line with what children self‐report as important and required and to date indicates good usability and utility. Nurses around the world have described family-centred care (FCC) in various ways. With limited evidence regarding its implementation and with dissent among professionals regarding outcomes that are amorphously defined across age groups, systems and global settings, a group of children's nursing experts from around the world collaborated to seek clarification of the terms, deconstruct the elements in the model and describe empirically a consensus of values toward operationally defining FCC. A modified Delphi method was used drawing on expert opinions of participants from eight countries to develop a contemporary and internationally agreed list of 27 statements (descriptors of FCC) that could form the foundation for a measure for future empirical psychometric study of FCC across settings and countries. Results indicated that even among FCC experts, understandings of FCC differ and that this may account for some of the confusion and conceptual disagreement. Family- and child-centred care are philosophies of care used within paediatrics where the family and/or the child are central to healthcare delivery. This study explored the lived experience of hospitalized school-aged children admitted to a paediatric high dependency unit in New Zealand to gain insight into child-centred care from a child's perspective. An interpretive thematic approach was used where the child was asked to draw a picture of 'a person in the hospital' that was further explored through interviews. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim with an inductive thematic analysis completed, drawing on the child-centred care framework. Twenty-six school-aged children participated. The pictures included drawings of family, staff, children and themselves. The themes generated from the interviews were relationships with themselves, family and staff and psychosocial, emotional and physical support. Children described themselves as co-creators of their own healthcare experience, consistent with child-centred care, while drawing on the principles of family-centred care. Further exploration of the concepts of 'participation versus protection' and 'child as becoming versus child as being' will contribute to translation and integration of child-centred care and family-centred care principles into practice, theory, research and policy. An introduction is presented in which the editor discusses articles in the issue on topics including lack of resources and the impact of this on family-centered care (FCC), lack of policies to guide and support FCC, and the importance of nursing ethics in FCC.

Aim: This study explored parent and staff perceptions of family centred care (FCC) within a paediatric high dependency in one New Zealand hospital. Background: FCC is a partnership approach to healthcare delivery where the child's treatment is aligned to the family's needs. Despite widespread endorsement of FCC, variations between parents and staff in healthcare settings continues to be evident. Method: A descriptive qualitative cross-sectional design was used with a convenience sample where written responses for one open ended question from 91 parents and 66 staff resident with their child or working within a paediatric high dependency unit in New Zealand. Results: The parent's responses generated three themes (family, treatment and relationships) and the staff's responses generated two themes (family and treatment). Conclusion: Whilst there were similarities in describing the meaning of family centred care between parents and staff, their views on the central focus of this differed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Family-centered care (FCC) purports that unlimited presence and involvement of the family in the care of the hospitalized child will optimize the best outcome for the child, family, and institution. A systematic appraisal was conducted of peer-reviewed, English-language, primary quantitative research conducted within a pediatric critical care setting reported from 1998 to 2014. The aim of this review was to explore the parents', hospitalized child's, and health care providers' perception of FCC within pediatric critical care. Fifty-nine articles met the criteria that generated themes of stress, communication, and parents' and children's needs. This review highlighted that communication tailored to meet the parents' and child's needs is the key to facilitating FCC and positive health outcomes. Health care providers need to be available to provide clinical expertise and support throughout the health care journey. Future initiatives, education, and research are needed to evaluate the benefits of parent- and child-led FCC practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author proposes a paediatric model of care that can be developed and used in practice and provides a summary of her presentation regarding the history, development and relevance of family centered care (FCC) and child centered care (CCC) to the paediatric staff at Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand. She notes that her presentation highlighted the absence of a paediatric model of care that includes the family and child as visible and forefront to healthcare provision.

Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis was applied to identify pertinent themes., Results: Digital nursing technologies such as telehealth and web-based interventions effectively deliver interventions to assess and manage chronic pain; these technologies can reduce healthcare resource utilisation and increase accessibility. This review highlights that nurses commonly deliver exercise, cognitive-behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and self-management techniques through digital technology., Conclusion: This review indicates that web-based interventions and telemedicine are the primary digital technologies employed by nurses for chronic pain management providing psychosocial interventions, with evidence supporting their effectiveness. Determining the child's best interests in a hospital setting will ideally involve the combined views of children, parents, and healthcare professionals. However, few studies have explored parents' experiences of their child's best interests when they engage with the healthcare system. Therefore, this study aimed to explore parents' experiences of their child's best interests during hospitalisation. A descriptive qualitative inductive design using face-to-face parent-child combined interviews, analysed by latent content analysis, was used. Sixteen parents recruited from a tertiary hospital in Western Australia were interviewed.
