Abstract

We present, for the first time, spatially resolved spectroscopy for the entire Hickson Compact Group 31 obtained with the MUSE instrument at the VLT and an in-depth analysis of this compact group. To obtain a complete understanding of the system, we derived radial velocity and dispersion velocity maps, maps of the ionization mechanism of the system, chemical abundances and their distribution over the whole system, star formation rates and ages of the different star-forming regions, and the spatial distribution of the Wolf–Rayet stellar population. We also reconstructed the star formation history of the galaxies HCG 31 A, C, B, and F, measured the emission-line fluxes, and performed a stellar population synthesis. Our main findings are: (i) that there is clearly disturbed kinematics due to the merger event that the system is experiencing; (ii) that the ionization is produced exclusively via star formation except for the nucleus of the galaxy HCG 31 A, where there is a small contribution of shocks; (iii) that there is low oxygen abundance distributed homogeneously through the system; (iv) that there is a prominent population of carbon Wolf–Rayet stars in the central zone of the group; and (v) that there are clear evidences of the tidal origin of the galaxies HCG 31 E, HCG 31 H, and HCG 31 F because they show quite high oxygen abundances for their stellar mass. All these findings are clear evidence that HCG 31 is currently in an early merging phase and manifesting a starburst in its central region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Antibiotics are often prescribed to treat infections caused by group B Streptococcus; however, inappropriate use of antibiotics can develop resistance. Because of this, the research was carried out with the aim of evaluating the in vitro effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Caesalpinia spinosa (Molina) Kuntze known as Taya or Tara on the viability of β-hemolytic streptococci; an experimental investigation of increasing stimulation was carried out. The hydroalcoholic extract of C. spinosa pods was worked in concentrations of 250, 500, 750, and 1000 mg/mL, which were placed on filter paper discs to perform the sensitivity test following the Kirby–Bauer method. The greatest inhibition of bacterial viability was observed in the penicillin control group (GPT-01) followed by the TCT-04 group (hydroalcoholic Tara extract 1000 mg/mL). In addition, it was found that these groups are statistically different from the rest (p < 0.05), while the lowest bacterial inhibition was obtained for the erythromycin group and the TCT-01 group (250–1000 mg/mL). It was concluded that the hydroalcoholic extract of the pods of C. spinosa (Molina) Kuntze affects the viability of β-hemolytic streptococci associated with strep pharyngitis and that this antimicrobial activity is due to the presence of tannins, steroidal flavonoid, and alkaloids. Likewise, the tested concentrations of hydroalcoholic Tara extract were found to have better antibacterial activity than erythromycin (15 µg/mL) against β-hemolytic streptococci. Abstract

Object recognition using the tactile sense is one of the leading human capacities. This capability is not as developed in robotics as other sensory abilities, for example visual recognition. In addition to a robot's ability to grasp objects without damaging them, it is also helpful to provide these machines with the ability to recognise objects while gently manipulating them, as humans do in the absence of or complementary to other senses. Advances in sensory technology have allowed for the accurate detection of different types of environment; however, the challenge of being able to efficiently represent sensory information persists. In this paper, a sensory system is proposed that allows a robotic gripper armed with pressure sensors to recognise objects through tactile manipulation. A pressure descriptor is designed to characterise the voltage magnitudes across different objects and, finally, machine learning algorithms are used to recognise each object category. The results show that the pressure descriptor characterises the different classes of objects in this experimental set-up. This system can complement other sensory data to perform different tasks in a robotic environment and future research areas are proposed to handle problems with tactile manipulation. Abstract

In the first case, the diagnosis of cutaneous lupus was based on the presence of non-specific lupus features such as biopsy-proven vasculitis, leg ulcers, and anonychia. Late-onset lupus is characterized by an onset after 50 years of age. Our initial clinical suspicion was urticarial vasculitis, but the biopsy ruled out leucocytoclastic vasculitis and revealed a classic histology of specific cutaneous lupus lesions.
