The California Department of Public Health (CDPH)’s Food and Drug Branch (FDB) initiated a study to assess the presence of such adulterated products, specifically to identify the presence of PDE5 inhibitors in dietary supplements marketed for sexual enhancement, sampled at local retail locations.Methods: A convenience sample of products marketed as sexual enhancement dietary supplements was purchased from retail stores, within a 15-mile radius of downtown Sacramento, California. Samples were submitted to the Food and Drug Laboratory Branch (FDLB) and screened for 19 different PDE5 inhibitors using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Samples were collected and analyzed from 2016 to 2018.Results: One hundred and two different products were purchased from 28 different retail locations. Sixty-seven percent were found to be adulterated with at least one PDE5 inhibitor. Of the positive samples, 40% were found to contain one PDE5 inhibitor and 60% were found to contain two or more. Sildenafil was the most common PDE5 inhibitor identified (74%), followed by tadalafil (59%). Eighteen percent of the tested samples had been associated with previous FDA warnings listed in their Tainted Products Database. Of these warning-associated samples, 72% were found to contain PDE5 inhibitors and 46% of these contained at least one of the same adulterants reported by the FDA.Conclusion: FDA reports and warnings have focused on dietary supplements found online or through screenings of international mail shipments. FDB results add to FDA findings by demonstrating that such adulterated products marketed for sexual enhancement are also sold at retail locations in California. These products have the potential to cause severe adverse health effects and therefore, it is essential to raise awareness of this significant public health concern.Keywords: dietary supplements, sexual enhancement products, adulteration

Cell-free blood cell secretome (BCS) also known as autologous conditioned serum (ACS) has shown anti-inflammatory and regenerative mode of action in musculoskeletal disorders and radicular compression.Aim: To confirm that BCS can improve signs of skin aging from a previous study in a multi-center setting.Methods: Prospective, one-armed, multi-center interventional therapeutic study. Ninety-five women with skin firmness loss were treated with four intra-dermal injection sessions in both cheeks at 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks. BCS was processed with Exokine® medical device according to manufacturer’s instructions. Primary endpoints were cutometric R0 and R3 at 12 and 24 weeks. GAIS, FACE-QTM, Patient Attractivity Self-Assessment and safety were evaluated.Results: Mean skin firmness (R0) improved significantly from baseline 0.40 mm to 0.38 mm at week 12 and to 0.36 mm at week 24. Mean skin tiring (R3) improved significantly from baseline 0.45 mm to 0.42 mm at week 12 and to 0.40 at week 24. FACE-QTM “Satisfaction with Skin” significantly improved from baseline to weeks 12, 24 and 48. So did “Satisfaction with Facial Appearance” and “Psychological and Social Function”. “Satisfaction with Decision” and “Satisfaction with Outcome” were stable at week 24 and 48. At week 48 patients assessed their age 1.68 years younger vs Baseline. FACE-QTM aging appraisal improves from Baseline 52.94 to 65.23 at week 48. GAIS, by both physicians and patients, confirm improvement of skin.Conclusion: For up to 48 weeks four intra-dermal injections with cell-free BCS increase facial skin firmness and resilience to tiring and patients’ satisfaction with their facial appearance and skin. Patients perceive their face as younger. 13. Using NIW Observations to Assess Mixed Layer Parameterizations: A Case Study in the Tropical Atlantic.

Abstract

Tropical sea surface temperature (SST) biases can cause atmospheric biases on global scales, hence SST needs to be represented well in climate models. A major source of uncertainties is the representation of turbulent mixing in the oceanic boundary layer, or mixed layer (ML). In the present study we focus on near‐inertial wave (NIW) induced mixing. The performance of two mixing schemes, Turbulent Kinetic Energy and K‐profile parameterization (KPP), is assessed at two sites (11.5°N, 23°W and 15°N, 38°W) in the tropical Atlantic. At 11.5°N, turbulence observations (eddy diffusivities, shear and stratification) are available for comparison. We find that the schemes differ in their representation of NIWs, but both under‐represent the observed enhanced diffusivities below the observed ML. However, we find that the models do mix below the ML at 15°N when a storm passes nearby. The near‐inertial oscillations remain below the ML for the following 10 days. Near‐inertial kinetic energy (NIKE) biases in the models are not directly correlated with the wind speed, the MLD biases, or the stratification at the ML base. Instead, NIKE biases are sensitive to the vertical mixing scheme parameterization. NIKE biases are lowest when the KPP scheme is used. Plain Language Summary: The surface temperature of the ocean is highly dependent on the depth of the mixed layer (ML), the uppermost layer in the water column, where density, temperature and salinity are approximately constant. In climate models, the vertical mixing processes cannot be resolved, and instead they are computed with the use of vertical mixing schemes. We assess how well two of such schemes can represent the mixing induced by a specific type of ocean waves, near‐inertial waves (NIWs). We compare recent observations of turbulent mixing induced by NIWs in the tropical Atlantic with numerical simulations that resolve storms. Our results show that the models are able to reproduce the observed NIWs, but underestimate their mixing and amplitude. Our analysis also shows that NIWs are a driver of mixing below the uppermost ocean layer in the models. The strength of the near‐inertial currents is sensitive to the vertical mixing parameterization. Abstract

Near IR spectroscopic reverberation of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) potentially allows the infrared (IR) broad line region (BLR) to be reverberated alongside the disc and dust continua, while the spectra can also reveal details of dust astro-chemistry. Here, we describe results of a short pilot study (17 near-IR spectra over a 183 d period) for Mrk 509. The spectra give a luminosity-weighted dust radius of 〈 R d,lum〉 = 186 ± 4 light-days for blackbody (large grain dust), consistent with previous (photometric) reverberation campaigns, whereas carbon and silicate dust give much larger radii. We develop a method of calibrating spectral data in objects where the narrow lines are extended beyond the slit width. We demonstrate this by showing our resultant photometric band light curves are consistent with previous results, with a hot dust lag at >40 d in the K band, clearly different from the accretion disc response at <20 d in the z band. We place this limit of 40 d by demonstrating clearly that the modest variability that we do detect in the H and K band does not reverberate on time-scales of less than 40 d. We also extract the Pa β line light curve, and find a lag which is consistent with the optical BLR H β line of ∼70–90 d. This is important as direct imaging of the near-IR BLR is now possible in a few objects, so we need to understand its relation to the better studied optical BLR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Educational robotics proposes the use of robots as a teaching resource that enables inexperienced students to approach topics in fields unrelated to robotics. In recent years, these activities have grown substantially in elementary and secondary school classrooms and also in outreach experiences to interest students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) undergraduate programs. A key problem in educational robotics is providing a satisfactory, adequate, easy-to-use interface between an inexpert public and the robots. This paper presents a behavior-based application for programming robots and the design of robotic-centered courses and other outreach activities. Evaluation data show that over 90% of students find it easy to use. These activities are part of a comprehensive outreach program conducted by the Exact and Natural Science Faculty of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (FCEN-UBA). Statistical data show that since 2009 over 35% of new students at the FCEN-UBA have participated in some outreach activity, suggesting their significant impact on student enrollment in STEM-related programs.

Abstract

We present the hot molecular and warm ionized gas kinematics for 33 nearby (0.001 ≲ z ≲ 0.056) X-ray selected active galaxies using the H |$_2\, 2.1218\, \mu$| m and Br γ emission lines observed in the K band with the Gemini near-infrared integral field spectrograph. The observations cover the inner 0.04–2 kpc of each active galactic nucleus at spatial resolutions of 4–250 pc with a velocity resolution of σinst ≈ 20  |${\rm km\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. We find that 31 objects (94 per cent) present a kinematically disturbed region (KDR) seen in ionized gas, while such regions are observed in hot molecular gas for 25 galaxies (76 per cent). We interpret the KDR as being due to outflows with masses of 102–107 and 100–104 M⊙ for the ionized and hot molecular gas, respectively. The ranges of mass-outflow rates (⁠|$\dot{M}_{\rm out}$|⁠) and kinetic power (⁠|$\dot{E}_{\rm K}$|⁠) of the outflows are 10−3–101 M⊙ yr−1 and ∼1037–1043 erg s−1 for the ionized gas outflows, and 10−5–10−2 M⊙ yr−1 and 1035–1039 erg s−1 for the hot molecular gas outflows. The median coupling efficiency in our sample is |$\dot{E}_{\mathrm{K}}/L_{\rm bol}\approx 1.8\times 10^{-3}$| and the estimated momentum fluxes of the outflows suggest they are produced by radiation-pressure in low-density environment, with possible contribution from shocks.
